Title: Back of Beyond Painting Club
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on July 17, 2016, 02:27:45 PM
Welcome to the Back of Beyond Painting Club (BoBPC)!

After some break we continue our series of board based Painting Clubs with this one. Let’s talk about what goes here and what not first. It's pretty simple, just keep to the board themes which are Russian Civil War and Central Asia in the 1920s. Thus you may post everything about RCW or any rumbles at the time between 1917/1918 and 1930 in the far regions of Central Asia, included Mongolia, China, Far East, Tibet, NWF etc. And we're talking here not only about historically correct stuff but also about some Pulpish interpretations of scientific expeditions in this area, e.g. adventurous scientists looking for lost treasures of ancient times. If you're not sure about a particular miniature or theme, just ask me.

Now the rules.

- Any registered member of the LAF is free to participate.
- You may post a single picture every 24 hours, by replying to this thread.
- You may post any number of pictures during the run of the painting club, as long as you only post a single picture a day.
- The picture must feature a single-based wargaming or hobby miniature
- The picture may be a single shot of a figure or a composite of up to three perspective views (e.g. front, rear, three-quarters).
- Further digital manipulation except for white-balance and color correction is not allowed
- For small figure sizes (15mm and less), the base may contain more than a single miniature, but the image may only contain a single base.
- The figure should, by all means, be newly-painted for this contest and unpublished so far in its present state. NOTE: This club is not intended for showing off your collections, especially if you have already shown images thereof. All figures should be new.
You may upload the image by using the Attachment function or by uploading it to an image hosting service and linking here.
When posting, please look up the last number and number yours accordingly, e.g. if the last entry was entry #042, your entry is #043 and should be labelled as such.
- The contest will run until 100 entries have been posted.
- I will collect all the entries in a gallery which was created for this painting club.
- And the most important rule – this thread is not a competition, it’s a collaborative project. There is nothing to win, therefore just should try to have some fun painting and posting a few entries for this club.

Participants who submitted an item are entitled to add the Weird Wars Painting Club Badge to their signature.

Blimey, I fear vacation will be in the way of me participating here, although I do have some suitable figures to get done.
Well, I'll just sit back, watch, and enjoy the entries - maybe there'll be a few slots left when we return from Spain, maybe not, but it should be a good show, anyway  :)

Thanks for the kind words. He has been on my 'to do' list for a while and this club got me to extract the digit and slap the paint on. Might have to revisit the piercing blue eyes at some stage though, they look a bit too much at this level of magnification.

As it seems I've gotten my entry right I've added the signature block club badge which looks rather swish.

#003 – Colonel Armand le Croissant, mercenary adviser to Warlord General Mok.

Armand is actually a deserter from the Légion étrangčre. Making his way to Shanghai from Algeria, Armand spent his last few stolen francs on a fancy uniform and a one-way ticket to Hankow. Passing himself off as a retired Légion colonel, he now commands Warlord General Mok’s armoured train with a ruthlessness verging on the psychopathic.

Great stuff all round - and now I have to find my khakis....  ::)

Interesting figure, I'm guessing West Wind by the style? I was thinking this was going to be almost all Copplestone miniatures and I've been pleasantly surprised by some of the entries!

I tried to mimick the colours and style of the 'command section' I painted years ago for 'Secrets of the Hidden Temple', and I don't think I shall do that for any subsequent minis from this set, as it is pain to do when not having the slightest recollection of what colours/shades were used  lol

I painted this guy in more Imperial Chinese getup than a republican/warlord uniform thinking that it would suggest he has some pretty big ambitions going on there. Either that or he is something of an 'old school' sort of chap hankering for the 'good old days' of imperial rule.  Half-cape inspired by Captain Phasma.

Nice entries Steve and Muzfish! I didn't remember that particular Chinese General, good job. Xiang Lung is stunning.  One of the old sayings on LAF, started by Hammers if I recall correctly, is that everything is better with monkeys and bacon. One of the Dogmeat General's Student Militia spreading Han civilization in far Manchuria. No.65 (Ironclad Miniatures) Chinese Warlord

The inscrutable Yu Lon Chi the head man of the White Hyacinth Tong based in Ürümqi - capital of Xinjiang Province in North West China, pictured here in the Tianshan Mountains 1926.

Urumqi was ruled by the warlord Yang Zengxin from 1911 to 1928, it was a wild and dangerous place. It grew to prominence due to its position on the Silk Road and every bandit, con man, bully boy, and lowlife was attracted by its easy money and fast living.

The White Hyacinth Tong were the top of the pile, they say scum rises. They were bad men and none badder than Yu, he ran protection and prostitution in the downtown area, and also the cities most influencial bank in the uptown area, he had fingers in many pies.

The Tong could easily be recognised by the White Hyacinth embroidered on their clothing. Recognised and then avoided - unless they came up behind you, in which case you were normally washed up on the banks of the Urumqi River or left to rot in some remote corner of the Tianshan Mountains.

Thanks - maybe a bit too simplistic, but I did not have the guts to try my luck at some freehand decorations/musters.

She looks nice but I would add some freehand on the dress and/or perhaps on the cuffs.

The green dragon on the back looks nice, you did it well.  I'd add more of that motif on the cuffs and some yellow or blue on the dress.  Just my two cents.

Just the sort of mini that helps making a gaming table come to life!  8)

I have a tendency to focus on actual combatants and pivotal character models, neglecting all the 'trimmings' (probably because I spread myself far too thin over fart too many settings/games  ::)  ), and often find myself pretty jealous of those of you who have the stamina/energy/patience to stay with a single setting/project over a long period, and really care about all the little details.

GWM with Woodbine head

I have been using Woodbine heads for my conversion of all sorts of brands. I am quite frankly getting a bit sick of them, they are quite dull and expressionless. Luckily Empress have released both separate Afghan and Wollsley heads quite recently, sculpted by the honorable Paul Hicks. That's the way I'll be going forward.

With me it is the other way around, I do all the fun stuff first (command, signals, heavy equipment, first aid...). I have about 50 pathan irregular cavalry on my desc waiting for completion. It is fun painting them for a while, if you do it the right way, but the horses is a hell of tedium.

As for patience. What is really the hurry, if you think about it? It's a hobby.

As for patience. What is really the hurry, if you think about it? It's a hobby.

Not so much hurry, as that I get bored too easily, and suffer from extreme Butterfly Syndrome. It is also the reason why everything I paint these days has to be usable for several purposes - that way, something I painted for a project that stalled some time ago can be added to for a newfound craze, and suddenly I have finished minis for not only the current project, but often also for the previous one  lol

One of the good things about LAF is lots of ideas to use for how to repurpose and revitalize old batches of minis - and I enjoy painting much more after learning the layering technique by looking at and 'copying'  the way some of all the great minis posted here were painted, so I experience fewer periods with 'painting fatigue' (although painting a lot of minis to a deadline can sometimes derail me for some time).

Horses? Always puts me off a bit, but I plan to change my attitude, and start getting more cavalry on the table, as soon as I can afford getting a batch of steel cavalry bases manufactured by a laser-cutting firm (I have the file ready, just need to have some cash available - the project stalled due to the family land speeder having problems with the transmission, only took the Suzuki authorized garage about 4 month to get it fixed...). And, yes, I want steel bases, no plastic, no mdf - for several reasons.

Well, like many ethnic minorities they are struggling to maintain and keep alive their traditions. Conflict of interest and cultural imperialism (aggressiv and/or passive) is a constant threat. But in all fairness many sami (or lapps as they were called earlier) attributes, like the boots, reindeer pelts and the knives are part of Swedish common identity. Reindeer meat (reindeer are only herded by sami) is a true common delicacy of our national gastronomy.

There is a sami nation, Sapmi, stretching across Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola peninsula of Russia, but it has no real autonomy. Swedish sami bow to the Swedish king*), etc.

I am not sure the sami as a people belong in the BoB (as it is defined among us), but what the hell, I don't know i any other subforum fits the ticket any better. Story of their lives, I suppose.

*) ...or, like most other Swedish subjects, briefly pause the zapping, should His Majesty appear on the telly.

No.73 (Ironclad Miniatures) Chinese Bodyguard

This is a photograph of Chang - bodyguard and general enforcer to the inscrutable Yu Lon Chi the head man of the White Hyacinth Tong based in Ürümqi, in North West China taken here in the Tianshan Mountains 1926. (see entry 65)

Changs mother died of typhus when he was 6 months old and his father of an equally deadly virus, an unpaid gambling debt to the Rickshaw Drivers Union who ran gambling and racetracks on the north side of town. Rickshaw racing was the hottest sport in Xinjiang Province in the 1920’s.

Chang wandered the streets stealing and fighting until he was spotted by Yu Lon Chi one day when he had just beaten a boy twice his age in a fist fight for a stale loaf of bread.
Chi took him in, fed and clothed him and now Chang reveres Chi as the father figure he never really knew.

Everyone knows that to get to Chi, you have to go through Chang, and no one goes through Chang.

Dammit, those last entries once more makes me go shopping.

The Sami sled driver is a fantastic conversion, and the whole 'vignette' is just catching my impressionf of the Sami people (only missing some reindeer!). The Ironclad guy is now just screaming to get included in a sinister Pulp gang (I originally avoided buying him, as I thought the mini looked a bit meh in the bare metal - but painted it suddenly appeals to me, a lot!).

I didn't comment on the Prof.'s 'Admiral Benbow', as it is so obviously great, which does not mean that it did not leave me dribbling with envy, too. I love the pulpy aspects of the Back of Beyond setting, and any Bob Murch sculpt appearing here is just making me plan more future purchases (or set me off digging through my extensive back catalogue of acquired mins).

That is really interesting! I wasn't aware of that ethnic group.

In English we call their region Lapland, and some people think that's where Santa Claus lives (in fact they run Christmas short breaks to take your kids there to meet him).

I don't believe in Santa Claus. I'm strictly a Father Christmas kind of chap. Before the sentimental Victorians merged him with Santa and made him all about giving presents to snot-nosed kids, he was the English god of getting shit-faced at Christmas. :)

Lovely job, Hammers. I'm feeling very Chrissmassy now. I think I shall hit the Amontillado in a spell. :)

Good point. If I was to indulge in that sort of superstition I think I'd be even more old school and pay homage to "tomten" or "nissar". Those fellows, according to lore we no longer tell our children, are nice enough until you cause them slight, real or imagined, whereupon the will retaliate by poisoning your livestock (just to mention one of many anecdotal disproportionate reactions). The little chap in the picture below is dead, which is their most convenient state, I suppose.

We also have the "julbock", the christmas buck who knocks on your door and, for reasons which are not fully understood but must be profound, throws a split log into your house. As of yet I have not told my 6-year old much about him either.

Effigies of the same are raised in various heathen towns around Sweden to worship and placate the monster, but they are traditionally burnt to cinder long before Christmas, possibly by Christian zealots or rowdy teenagers on a dare.

But I digress... Who is next in line for the BoB PC?

The huskeys are excellent especially like the glint in their eyes.   :o

Do you remember where they came from - apart from the artic that is.

To be honest, the thing is far from authentic looking. Reindeer are more commonly used as draft animals rather than dogs, although the larger samojed dogs are used for that purpose. The sled is wrong to, the sami "pulka" or "fjällpulka" looks like this:

But I am glad you noticed the blue eyes. :)

The Austrians have solved this problem with the Krampus.

This is the Alps, though, not Lapland.

Too many good photos, I had to post a bunch!

The Krampus comes after the bad kids and beats them and eventually eats them.

No 78 - Bob Murch Pulp Figures

The deadly but beautiful Mai Ling the second most powerful person in the White Hyacinth Tong, pictured here in the Tianshan Mountains 1926.

The triumvirate of Yu Lon Chi No 65, Chang No 73 and Mai Ling maintain a grip of iron on the White Hyacinth Tong (note the symbol of the Tong discreetly embroidered on her pantaloons) and through the Tong a stranglehold the on vice and crime in Xinjiang Province, North West China.
The silk road may no longer carry silk but there are darker goods traded along the road in the 1920’s and the White Hyacinth is in the trade up to their necks, with Mai Ling masterminding most of it.

No one knows for sure where Mai Ling came from – she drifted into town and naturally gravitated to the centre of power, rising quickly to the top, leaving a trail of broken men behind her.

I spraypaint white, black thin wash (Citadel Nuln Oil, very good, has a smidgen of red in it). Be sure to use flow improver ( I use Windsor). Use liberal amounts of wash and make sure I work it into all crevices and folds. Wipe off excesses and let dry ( home made EazyBake oven). I use a Andrea Paints white pallet and use three successive hilites: limestone white, bone and titanium white.

Title: Re: Back of Beyond Painting Club
Post by: FramFramson on February 04, 2017, 06:51:55 PM
The count is a conversion. The body is an Obi-Wan from Knight models (which makes him a tall and imposing fellow) and which makes an excellent stand-in for a chapan-clad Turkmen type, the head is a GW Empire knight, and the hat is one I very carefully saved from an earlier Copplestone conversion when I was making my Soviet troops.

I hadn't really thought about it whilst I was painting but you're right he does have that Tintin look.

I have the Hinterland not-Tintin set to paint yet and also with Tin Shed Gamers lovely new sculpts released through 1st Corps, a Tintin game is looking very much on the cards.

He is a great figure.

Maybe, one day, we should run a painting club where everyone paints the same figure.

Might be a bit of a slow burn - maybe a 50 person club, rather than a 100, but would be interesting to see so many different takes on a single figure  :)

We did that some time ago on BGG when the Painter's Guild monthly painting competition had a one year anniversary.

There was some back-and-forth in selecting the miniatures but the one that was chosen in the end, a Warrior Priest from Avatars of War, seemed to be reasonable choice.

The list with the contest can be found here:

Given that it is the lead adventure forum, why not some kind of adventurer? The right mini could be used for any number of periods from colonial to interwar/Pulp/BoB or further.

Or alternativey a competiton where its based on a theme, perhaps the same? Everyone paints what they consider to be an adventurer.

Lots of nice entries, and personally, I really don't mind that an event runs over an extended amount of time.  :)

Normally, it would have given me time to contribute a few more Pulp Figures and Copplestone Castings minis, this time around I was just too busy painting skeletons and Vikings, and I did not dare stray from the planned path - Butterfly Syndrome, et al.  lol

I hope that I am not army-painting at the time of the next Painting Club, as a PC is such a nice motivation for digging out a stalled project, and get a handful of minis ready for some table-top action!
