All of them  :D

No German ones?

But if you really need an answer which one, Object 268.

I've got some rules about projects - The rules include: 'Must have seen combat' - this one has been changed to 'must have been built'.

Quite a few of the Paper Tigers were not practical, most have a rear drive but no room for a transmission!  I may explore them later...

I'm thinking Tortoise, the Soviets have the ISU-152 already but no one has a 30 pounder... but the 268 looks awesome too...

My initial thought was the tortoise :) Looking forward to seeing this

30 pounder AT gun...  :o

Correction - 32 pounder!  Ouch - though penetration data is proving elusive...

Excellent camo on the Tortoise gun barrel, turns the entire shebang practically invisible...
I bet it could sneak up on you without you knowing!

Never heard of the tortoise but it looks cool
Where does the driver sit?
Is that the driver on the left?

Of those you listed it'd be the Tortoise, but later additions to the IS range would be interesting - I'm particularly thinking of the multi gunned madness that was the IS7.

That thing does have a ridiculous number of mgs...

But I think I'm going with the Tortoise.

then the T-95

then the others :D

Eagerly following how this turns out, always thought that while the tortoises hull was of fairly simple slabby construction, the casemates front section had a weird lumpy shape that might be an interesting challenge, good luck with the project!

Post by: Rich H on July 26, 2016, 01:36:04 PM
Thanks.
The casemate is going to be a bit of a pain but not impossible.  I build the flat structure from plasticard and leave pockets for miliput to create the corners. They can then be sculpted then sanded to shape.

T-95 has a similar problem.

Started on the A39 hull but I'm not happy with it, the rounded bits are very tricky!
I'll rebuild it tomorrow, won't take long.  I've got a better plan for it.

You know? I think this is the first time I've visited the WWII board. After seeing this thread, I AM kicking myself!

I was aware of monsters, both during and after the war, but those are eye-opening.

I just wish there was a model of the T-95.

There was a discussion on another forum of what you'd use to start the Sci-Fi cybernetic tank known as O.G.R.E.

One look, and it was all, THAT'S IT!

However, I will be back to see how the Tortoise is coming along. Crickies!

Just checked out your thread on warlord - WOW!

Excellent work on so many different models.

Interesting to see the framework of the Tortoise - looking forward to seeing it progress. Its a big old beast!

Thanks!

I use a few ways of keeping things in line, internal bulkheads usually.
Once the major faces are stuck I then go round and plate over the gaps.

I try and minimise filler but sometimes it's unavoidable!

Working on the undercarriage now - it's rather tedious!  Pics to follow...

Those markings (traverse angle?) on the Sherman seem familiar, I think I've seen a photo somewhere - what are they please?

Its a Royal Marine Armoured Support Group observation tank.  Used on DDay to durect the fire from the RMASG Centaurs.

It certainly is massive.  Its strange that in isolation it looks small as most of my tanks are 1/48 but put it in context and its size is apparent!

Bonkers. In a good way.

I followed some links last night to a thread where a chap was building a 1/35th Ratte - it was huge. He was casting bogies from resin - all 60 of them.

Post by: fastolfrus on August 01, 2016, 10:45:04 PM
I/35 Ratte? that would be impressive.

I recall a wargames show in the late 1970s where someone turned up with a 1/6th scale tiger.
Remote control, fired shotgun blanks. More of a model engineering project (it was all metal) than a model-making project.

Looks fantastic, I hate to wish insomnia on anyone but it seems to be working for you!
For true large scale insanity, there was a tv show in the UK about model making called 'Supermodels' & in one episode there was a segment about a talented gentleman, (can't recall his name I'm afraid) who specialised in scatch built 1/6 scale WWII models - including the 80cm Schwerer Gustav railway gun. However the true insanity was only revealed once we entered his 'shed' wherein was a 1/2 size Tiger 1E entirely built of wood, while outside were full size, wooden replicas of both an SdKfz 250 & a panzer II Ausf L - such dedication surely wins him all the marbles!

The hatches really start to make it come to life.

Its interesting to see the use of different materials, the laser cut mdf for the mantlets, but plastic card for the hatches.
Title: Re: Next tank project - A39 Tortoise!
Post by: Rich H on August 03, 2016, 07:41:29 AM
Yes the mdf cuts beautifully on the laser so complex shapes are easier.  The plastic can be cut but the edges are usually poor

Minor mistake on the front of the hull the sharp edges need blending out.  Also need to add more filler to the roof to blend in the minor turret sides and the commander's cupola.
Then it's on to rivets and hinges *Shudder* it's going to take ages!

I'm waiting for my Mr Surfacer to turn up so once the filleting is done I can give the cast armour the required texture of cast armour, it will also blend in the curves better.
