Title: Agis Star Trek minis - Modiphius Troi and Riker
Post by: Agis on August 06, 2016, 01:18:36 PM
My interest in Star Trek was recently re-ignited; Beyond was OK, a new TV Series is announced and Modiphius Entertainment announced the development of Star Trek Adventures!

Time to dig out ST Attack Wing and give the ships the same repaints as my X-Wing minis.

Nice work.  I've repainted quite a few STAW figs myself, some good quality sculpts in that range.  Also some terrible ones, but that's pretty much to be expected from prepaints, sadly.

Federation USS Enterprise E - model is a bit sloppy and difficult to repaint, the ship design is IMO the most beautiful Enterprise, closely followed by the NX-01.

AND - Modiphius Entertainment announced the development of Star Trek Adventures!
http://www.modiphius.com/star-trek.html
I managed to get the promotional Kirk and Picard miniatures, took my minutes to clean them up and prime them - since both are one piece casts, including the textured base! After that Kirk was painted.

Both miniatures are of incredible good quality. They follow the current trend in miniatures for more realistic proportions, live AvP or Warzone. The comparison picture below clearly shows it:
From left to right: Imperial Assault Han, Modiphius Kirk, Decipher Worf, GW Space Marine. The Marine looks almost comical with his over enhanced proportions!

I absolutely enjoyed painting Kirk. To enhance the clean look of Trek I did not highlight the mini to much, I went for a more muted and -hopefully- realistic look, that is also the reason why the eyes are just painted dark.

Highly recommended I can only hope for a lot of releases from this range!

Set my phazer to "awesome" - that's a great Kirk.

I've never been a Trekkie, but that's some swell painting.

But if you like miniatures currently you are probably at least *okay* with the 'heroic 28mm' style/proportions. On the grounds that if it bothered you that much you wouldn't have got in to minis.

Post by: Agis on September 17, 2016, 11:56:32 AM

Klingon D7 cruiser - ADB (former Mongoose) Starline 2500 model. The ActA SF line of minis is now owned by ADB. The model is reasonable good. Not a scale model but a tough all metal wargaming piece. I am planning a small 1500 pts Klingon fleet that will also use some Raptors from the 21st C ENT era, so I added the additional support rods for each warp nacelle. I will do similar hyperdetailing for the whole fleet to give them a unique and hopefully cool “before TOS” look.

The D7 was the standard cruiser of the Klingon Deep Space Fleet. It was designed as a tough warship with a good turn mode and lots of Marines and transporters for boarding actions and hit-and-run raids. In many ways it is THE iconic Klingon ship.

It is also one of the most often showed ship models in Star Trek with a lot of continuity problems (see: The Everlasting Klingon Battlecruiser -> http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/articles/klingon-battlecruiser.htm).

Lovely work there, as usual, and a surprisingly good base model.  Hadn't realized that ADB had improved the castings on the 2500 stuff so much since getting them away from the bunglers at Mongoose.

Federation Constitution class  cruiser “NCC 1701 - Enterprise” - ADB (former Mongoose) Starline 2500 model.
The model is reasonable good but the cast is not as good some other models of the line, I presume since everybody interested in the miniature line wants an Enterprise, the mold is very well used. Consequently the model was a challenge to build. Warped disk, flash, rough surfaces etc.

But all in all I like the ship! And the smaller ships from the line are in much better shape.

Nice painting, but, oh, those circular and radial lines on the upper saucer!  The 1960s prop didn't have them, but for some reason the Aurora model kit added them, and they were canonised in the Star Trek Technical Manual that Amarillo used as the basis for all their models.  In fact, I can't think of a model of the original Enterprise that doesn't have them.  If anyone does know of one, please let me know: I'd love to get my brother one for Christmas.

As far as gaming minis go, the model from Amarillo's 2400 line (http://www.starfleetstore.com/federation-c-12_25/federation-heavy-cruiser-p-229.html?zenid=803a47caf5689b1fc4e32034cc5e4d2e) doesn't have them.

The Polar Lights kits don't have them. Those aren't gaming scale though. They have 2 kits of the TOS Enterprise one in 1/1000 scale (https://starshipmodeler.biz/shop/index.cfm/product/2725_144/11000-star-trek-uss-enterprise---space-seed-edition.html) and one in 1/350 (https://starshipmodeler.biz/shop/index.cfm/product/2078_147/1350-star-trek-uss-enterprise-standard-edition-original-series.html). The former is a good size for a small shelf/desk display, the latter is huge; basically big enough to use as an old-school filming model in it's own right, and unfortunately I think OOP and thus commanding high prices everywhere.

The Polar Lights kits are very well regarded. They made a big effort to make them as accurate as possible, and the part engineering is good. All the UK sellers I found are asking stupid prices though, so it might be cheaper to buy them from the US, even with postage/customs factored in.

The ERTL/Round 2 1/2500 3-piece set (https://www.amazon.co.uk/AMT-Scale-Enterprise-NCC1701-1701A/dp/B002UX2M9W/ref=pd_day0_200_5/256-3746851-2079261?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=1X17S65HX911HSJV7J30) version doesn't have them either. That one is also too big for most gaming, though small enough that you actually could use it depending on the ruleset and table size. It's an old kit though, so fit is rough and detail is minimal.

The tech manual actually fanonized the grid lines, not canonized them. None of the published manuals are officially canon according to CBS/Paramount, even though some of them are written by people who worked on the shows/movies, or have been used as references by people working on the shows/movies. IIRC the worst sin as far as canon is concerned is some of the old Franz Joseph TOS designs making blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameos on some bridge screens in TWoK (these ships are popular with older fans, but some of their design principles have been Jossed by the movies and later shows).

The original TOS shooting model actually did have the grid, but it was penciled on, not engraved, and basically invisible in anything other than high quality close up photos. Unfortunately, when the model was "restored" by the Smithsonian, they did an infamously kak-handed repaint, so what you see in modern photos is not at all what the original looked like during filming.

Thanks folks!

The circular and radial lines on the upper saucer were actually a real pain. Meant to make the painting easier the opposite was true.

The worn mold the lines were just not crisp enough to create lines that support an easy painting, in addition the lines were too deep to make the decals properly show.
Next week I will show a wardestroyer from the same line that is now on the paintable that is much better!

Funny thing, I was really tempted to do my recent ST models in 1/2500. In the end I decided against it since the models done in this scale are still limited or very expensives.
I would love to have a decent wargaming ST line in ONE scale.
I like Attack Wing and repainted a few already but the different scales just annoy me  a lot.

Thanks, Connectamabob.  That's a very useful rundown: and I never knew about the pencil lines.  My brother is neither a modeller nor a gamer, just a Star Trek fan, so I may get that Ertl* one and make it up for him.

* Fun fact: ERTL is not a set of initials: it's the name of the founder of the company, Fred Ertl.
Title: Re: Agis Star Trek Attack Wing repaints + TOS Enterprise
Post by: Connectamabob on October 09, 2016, 10:07:11 AM
I'd actually really recommend the PL 1/1000 kit over the Ertl 3 piece set. Despite being larger and having more parts, it's an easier build due to the far superior engineering and fit. Plus the PL kit makes for a way, way nicer looking finished model, without being very big.

The 3 piece set is more useful if you're wanting to put together a display with lots and lots of ships in scale, but the trade offs are harsh, as the kit really is quite rough (seriously: don't lets the Amazon reviews fool you). The Ertl kit, despite it's simplicity, needs lots of shimming, filing, and puttying. Plus the Refit and E-B models in the set both have raised panel lines and lots of details that should be present, but are soft, omitted, or outright obliterated by ham-fisted seams and mold drafts.

Size-wise "on the shelf" the two options could be compared to a fighter jet in 1/72 vs. 1/144. Detail and fit wise the 3 piece set is... kinda crappy, really, and the current reissue leans HEAVILY on the decals to hide that, while the PL kit is about 85% of the way to Bandai or Hasagawa quality.

Thanks, Connectamabob.  I was worried by your comment about the Polar Lights kits that, "All the UK sellers I found are asking stupid prices though ...", but I just bought one for £20.

The next problem will be how to pack the blessed thing once I've made it up, but I'm sure I'll manage!

Back to Trek! Glorious times for all Trek fans, Discovery takes up speed (after Episode 3 I am hooked) and Modiphius RPG gets better by the minute!
The new Trek minis are out and I painted Picard asap to show the difference to the give away promo mini Modiphius gave away.

I can’t says enough how good these minis are. Yes they have some very minor casting flaws, like mold lines and maybe one or two minor air bubbles, but the overall quality is as good as it gets in modern minis.

In addition they look very convincing and natural. Considering that the mini is around 32 mm tall, they have done an incredible job recreating Picard!

The scale shot below shows that the mini you can now buy are indeed even better that the already good promotion mini!

Thanks for sharing the comparisons.  Both are wonderful models but the retail release will suit my purposes better.  The classic TNG uniforms is very sleek while the second sculpt has folds and seems to hang a litle from the body.  If I can get a set I'd like to convert them to Enterprise era flight suits.  Your painting on both models is exceptional.

What's not to love about those figures?  The sculpts from each of the sets are excellent and your painting is stellar.  Enterprise era Romulans were costumed as depicted so they are perfect as they are.  Your choice of a pallid complexion sets them apart from the Klingon and Human making them suitably alien.

It's a Bat'leth Klingon sword, and I'm a little bit worried that I a ) knew that off-hand and b ) got the spelling right in the first attempt...

Very nice contrasts on the black. The gold could be a bit warmer for my taste, but that may be my screen.

This thread couldn't have come at a worse time for me - Just finished watching season 1 of Discovery, idly mulling getting some Trek figures and ships for a 'small' away team style project...

I should pay someone to bury my wallet in a secret place.  lol

Love the painting!  :-*

The male Andorian officer, I chose a red uniform as a nice contrast to the blue skin.

And group shot:

The Andorian seems to be a really big fella compared to the rest, just check out his head…

A Cyborg conversion based on the TNG Away Team Vulcan officer. After seeing Airiam in STDisco 2.09 Project Daedalus I wanted a female cyborg Star Fleet officer, I took a Statuesque Mini bionic female head (THE resource for very good female head swaps!) and the Modiphius Vulcan officer body. Done!
Since I had a female Vulcan head to spare I mounted her on an Infinity Mobile Brigade body.

She is now Commander T'Proll of the Task Force Omega.
“Assembled jointly by the Federation and the Klingon Empire to counter the Borg threat, Battle Group Omega (also known Task Force Omega) is a fleet stationed in the Noro Sector. The fleet is home to Omega Force. It serves as a deep space staging ground for incursions into Borg space. A nearby asteroid belt provides raw materials and supplies for the fleet, while a nearby rogue moon emits low-level delta radiation, which hides the fleet's energy signature from the Borg.”
from sto.gamepedia (https://sto.gamepedia.com/Battle_Group_Omega)
Commander T'Proll is wearing her custom Omega Force Armour, the Energy Harness Armour provides basic protection and increases energy attack damage. As a side arm she is equipped with an Antiproton wide beam pistol. The Omega Force Antiproton weapons deal additional damage to Borg, and has a chance to immobilise any target hit.

Thanks!  :)

Mostly GWs Citadel range and Vallejo.
The black is Black primer, Vallejo Dark Grey and more and more white mixed in.
The colours depend.

After the glorious return of Captain Picard to the screen - I just had to finish my STNG character group; Deanna and Will are done!
Will Riker “no. One” and Deanna Troi, IMO the weakest sculpt of the SRNG pack, but still nice minis!

Done, Tasha will be left out, I never really like the character anyway…

Excellent! I’m really always amazed at what speed you crank out these high quality paintjobs!

Off topic: Picard is simply great. And it has made me give Discovery a second try...and I like it maybe even better.

Paint long and prosper!

WOW, your Star Trek figures are awesome, I've painted the Modiphius original bridge crew and loved them but seeing your Romulans, Klingons and Borgs makes me want to go and get them.

As far as the current ST series are concerned, I rank Discovery S1 8/10, S2 9/10 and Picard 10/10.
Picard is IMO simply one of the best series around at the moment.

BTW The Mandalorian would get a 8/10 from me.

Can’t yet vote on Picard as I’ve only seen three episodes, but after these my expectations are very high. It feels like I’ve been waiting 20 something years for this to happen.

I agree with Discovery S1 being great. We have just started with S2 and I’m really excited if they can keep the high quality.

Btw: Dsc season 2 finished. Imo not as good as season 1, but still excellent.

Thanks, tbh the new GW colours helped a lot on the black areas!

As far as dsc is concerned, i like the end of season 2 a lot, it opens a whole new era of possibilities!
And agreed, Picard is just amazingly good.

I don’t say Dsc02 is bad, no sir! The wife and I enjoyed it tremendously, but 01 was more surprising and totally got me. Plus I loved the Dark Universe! But I agree 02 opens up GREAT possibilities for 03 following and they had an excellent ending in 02.

Picard makes me sing „Friday I‘m in love“ all week. It so cool to see the hero of my childhood and teenage years as an aged version. Last episode was brilliant. Hugh!!!
