Title: My Findings concerning Etruscans and how they fight
Post by: Kommando_J on August 07, 2016, 06:39:25 PM
Tempted by the aventine Etruscan minis after seeing this thread (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=83399.0) I decided to do some research.

I found that a raiding party like Mad Doc Morris had done would be suitable from before the 5th century until the 3rd century, while Etruscans made use of hoplite armour this was in most cases a symbol of status(making MDM's Poplios more accurate than he realized) and in fact phalanx tactics in the Greek style quite possibly were not utilized but a much looser formation was used with warriors rushing forward in a looser fashion.

Reuse of serviceable equipment as well as evidence of Etruscan nobles providing their clients/foot troops with armour means a wide variety of styles is theoretically possible.

Etruscans made use of and acted as mercenaries for other tribes and nations so mixing celts/gauls is possible and it is also possible to see Etruscans operating in Greece as mercenaries/refugees of later Roman rule.

All in all Etruscans make for a varied warband that can be anything from skirmish sized up to a sizable army.

Lots of very useful information in this post.  I had completely forgotten about that range of Etruscans.

Indeed, their is a nce mix of Greek/Roman stylings, not all fantasy settings have to be stereotypical medieval knights.
