Title: Blacksmith's sci-fi 15mm. A Tavshar Prime from Loud Ninja.
Post by: blacksmith on August 13, 2016, 05:00:30 PM
As I said in another thread I'm feeling the 15mm sci-fi bug again. Here are my first painted miniatures. A joy to paint:
Khurasan
(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ykS8RAf3cSk/V688_p031xI/AAAAAAAAEhU/pzrttTVyKYEZJDY9iFuIzsRUYq5kO3CrQCLcB/s1600/khurasan%2B003_Fotor.jpg)
Highlander Studio

GZG
(https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hG1i4BrAwuA/V6cwmFAnM3I/AAAAAAAAEg4/bw35mEJZG2gMHzQjFThH7wI7E7bsO3JBQCLcB/s1600/spaceport%2Bsecurity%2B001_Fotor.jpg)

Sorry for the big size. I'm crap with computers and don't know how to shrink them.

Wow, nice paintjobs!

I really like the apes and the orange guys (though all of them look really good!)

Fantastic work on the faces of those GZG minis.  Some of my favorite 15mm sculpts there, and you've really given them a lot of character.

Thanks guys. I'm discovering the pleasure of painting 15mm as they admit a lot of detail but get painted faster and easier.
Cheers,

Ooh!  Nice.  I'm always happy to see 15 mm stuff here.  These are a good assortment, with the monkeys standing out as a truly unique choice.  But those Khurasan gangers/punks are something I actually have myself, and plan to paint sometime.  They're oddly small compared even to other Khurasan figures, is the only thing.

Great to see you back in to 15s Javier. You know its the one true scale... for somethings...

You're painting is excellent as usual.

Thanks again for the nice comments guys. Yes, I think anything related to firearms is better in smaller scales IMHO. Besides, 15mm sci-fi it's easier for using tanks, VTOLS, mechs, terrain and such.

Heh, I suppose I was trying to convince myself somehow to quit from 15mm, though I'm no more able to paint a 28mm miniature's eye.
I'm always returning from old projects. I guess it's part of being an old wargamer  ::)

Another one. This time a Garn warrior that I will use as a Thulg bounty hunter from the old Laserburn rules universe.
It did not turn out as well as the previous ones, possibly because it is bigger, but it is Ok.

Ah... X-com. One of my all-time favourite PC games. I played through the original game dozens of times back in the nineties. At first I even used a special save disk, saving each tactical and geoscape turn, so I could always pick up there when things went south during a mission. later on, I found more enjoyment playing through a campaign 'Iron Man', with no intermediate saves at all.

I managed to get my original copy to play on my present day PC using a shell program, but I could not get into it anymore. The tedium of having to allocate each and every item for each and every mission, the glitchy controls (probably because of the virtual environment I was running the game in), and lack of the original music really put me off.

Some memories should probably just not be revisited, but they do remain fond! :)

For the longest time, I've thought about recreating the game on the tabletop; the setting lends itself perfectly after all. But as with so many projects, it never left the planning stage, even though I did acquire some miniatures for it (Heresy Scifi Troopers for the X-Com operatives and some Griffin(?) Greys as Sectoids).

But your choice of miniatures seems pretty spot on too! 15mm does give one much more flexibility, especially in terrain, and your table there, is very reminiscent of the PC graphics, especially the fields in the upper right corner, and the house too. The Droid Tri-fighter is suitably alien to work as a UFO, and the Terminator flyer is a really good stand-in for an X-Com Avenger.

Great work; please keep it up! 8)

Deothar many thanks for all your kind comments.
I think the latest version of PC game X-Com gives you all that old vibe in the game but without the hassle of unfriendly controls and such.

I played it last year and enjoyed it a lot. Actually, I played and finished for two and half times ;-)

Terror missions always were the most intense of tactical games!

Especially because of the one or two ever present not-xenomorphs changing civilians (and soldiers!) into zombies, when you wanted to clear the level without casualties, because the attacked city was in a region that was thinking of cutting off funding or even changing sides.

One of my favourite moments was blowing up a gas station where several Mutons were hiding; much smoke and destruction, and a lot of dead aliens. Best part; no civvies were hurt by the blast, and that was just the first (rocket)shot fired during the mission... :D

Work PC is preventing me from checking out your blog right now ('Forbidden Category: Games' ::) ), but from the pictures you posted here, I'd say you once again captured the look and feel of the old PC game perfectly.

Awesome looking game again! 8)

I have rules for zombies but they didn't get the chance to show up. Yes I always loved blowing up things with launchers ;-)

I bought these figures to use them as Laserburn rules' Red Redemptionists, as they have blades and cloaks like the old original ones, which I'm not using as I think they have aged not too well. Besides, these Xin in red can be used for other roles like Chaos troops in a Dark Future for example.

So I just went for a fast and simple red and black pattern, except for those wielding force swords. I painted them in yellow for high contrast with red and black, which I think I achieved, though they now look more like they were wielding bananas instead of swords.
