I've got my last Undead sat on the side ready to have the bases finished .........but I couldn't resist starting my Chaos Dwarf Army!
The minis are from "Russian Alternative" and Mantic Games Abyssal Dwarf ranges. I have enough to make a 32pt army with enough spare to swap in units depending upon the enemy.
First up is my Warlord (Russian Alternative) sitting on a custom made base. I pretty much stuck to "classic" CD colour scheme with lots of red and gold.

For the army list I just went through the rules and tried to create some balanced units. Here's a quick pic of one of my army lists. the image is a bit poor as it was exported from MS Front Page.

The Warlord is a reduced unit "Heavy Foot" because, although he doesn't have the same hitting power as elite foot, his 12 strength points and armour 3 make him quite hard to take down.

I'm exactly the same. NO MORE MINIS UNTIL I'VE PAINTED WHAT I'VE GOT.............. although I could do with a War Mammoth and some seige engines..... lol

Not Dragon Rampant. I tend to lack opponents and so I'm looking to paint up a couple of armies in order that I can cajole family members into giving it a bash. I've pretty much completed my Undead so these were next on my list.

Just completed my Chaos Dwarf Slave Master. He will be in charge of a unit of slave orcs ( Bellicose Foot with Terrifically Shiny Armour + Fearful).
He is a converted Russian Alternative mini with a GW head and a whip mounted on a custom base.

Just completed a unit of 6 Immortals with great weapons. They are all Russian Alternative with "Foundations of War" resin bases. They will be fielded as a unit of "elite foot".

I have experimented with some "crackle" paint on the movement tray ( Ranger distressed crackle paint) and I am quite pleased with the results.

Fantastic! Love the glossy red on the helmets most of all, works very well with the gold. The crackle on the tray has come up a treat too.

I quite like the crackle paint although it is taking a little practice to work out how thick I should paint it on.

I've put them in a similar movement tray to the Immortals using crackle paint for the surface and putting lava details in each slot so it looks better when you remove casualties.

Thanks gents, I'm glad you like them.I must admit when I was painting the Brock Riders it took a lot of will power not to start singing..... "Badger, badger, badger, badger..."
Next up is a first build up of my slave/siege giant. The armour is plasti-card with some old shields and the saddle is scratch-built with plastic rod, greenstuff and some bits from my bits box. I was a little reluctant to cut the hammer off the rider but I think the whip looks ok. When finished he will have more kit attached to him ( dead cow etc) and some chains from his bridle to the rider.

Usually I'm not a big fan of plastic miniatures, but your converted giant is really remarkable o_o
And naturally all the other miniatures you have yet painted are really well done too :)
I'm beginning to play with Frostrgrave (using my oldhammer warbands), now I'm tempted to try Dragon Rampant too...

I'm quite taken with the rules and really like the fact that you can pretty much stat up most things with very little effort. If you already have warbands it wouldn't take much to make up an army using reduced sized units.

I thought exactly the same when I was looking through his weapon options. I was going to put siege hooks on that arm as well but I liked the feeling of motion the chained piece of masonry has.
I'm feeling the pain in his bare feet!
When I initially painted him his feet were a nice pink colour which looked totally wrong. I used some watered down red ink to make them look sore.

Just started on my Chaos Dwarf chariot drawn by rabid badgers. A simple conversion of a GW chaos chariot with Mantic badgers pulling it, a converted Russian Alternative driver and a scratch-built base using MDF and cork.. The finished model will have reins etc.
I'm waiting on a classic Chaos Dwarf Sorcerer to stand behind the driver.

Thanks Vanlak. The Badgers are spare ones I had from the Mantic Brock Riders set. I only used 6 from the set of 10 for my berserkers and I thought they'd make a change from horses!

I've been side-tracked lately with other things and so haven't had much time to paint any new stuff. I have a half finished Iron Daemon which I have been working on which should be done in the next week or so.
I was looking at what I have done so far and decided to have a go at some reference cards for Dragon Rampant.

Thank you. Yes there is a 2px stroke around the image, a slight drop shadow and a smooth inner bevel to lift them slightly ( the bevel gives them that slight cell-shade effect). I also sharpened the image due to the reduced pixel count from the original, which makes it pop a little more.

It is a Westwind Dwarf Wars mammoth on resin base ( from Ebay). The original crew have been replaced with Russian Alternative minis with a few GW bits ( whip, banner and shields) added. The standard bearer has a Mantic head.

One of the things I both love and hate about these forums are that they are so active that it's too easy to miss wonderful threads.
But, the love part is that nothing ever grows stale here, always something new to find and drool over.
Pappa, I've been a big fan of your creativity, youf productivity, and your skill for some time, but I unfortunately have lost track of your work (plus I don't check Fantasy too often!)
Anyhow, I'm so glad I found this, I absolutely love this project. The Siege Giant and the War Mammoth are certainly centerpieces in an incredibly cool army.

@Beefcake: He is indeed the Dwarf Wars mammoth. A vert nice model for the price but you will have to do some filling work underneath where it joins and a bit of texturing also underneath as it is a bit smooth.

I'm still to start on a lava board to display them as it will be bespoke for the completed army. I haven't decided how far to go with these so the board is on hold at the moment.
@Admiral Benbow: I got the metallic red colour by painting the machine silver, using dark ink then re-applying the silver for highlights when the ink was dry. I then coated it in Tamiya Clear Red which gives it that glossy red look.

I like the painting. But I love the mixing and selection of figures just as much - nice "lava land!"
I suspect it is a variant of tamiya/ink on metal to easen the job for you?

Using inks is definitely a time saver and it gives some interesting effects, The Tamiya clear red for the metallics is a bit of a signature for this army as is a thin blue wash over any bright silver to make it pop. I can't recommend Army Painter inks highly enough for their results and now use them on all my models.
I use the square bases because I really like the resin ones from "Foundations of War" and they look nice ranked up ( IMO ). From the start I wanted to use movement trays and I think the "Warbases" Regiment trays are cool because you can rank them up but the spaces give enough room to stop them being too crowded.

I've always been a big fan of your work, Pappa Midnight - the consistency across a long-running project, the imaginative connections between different parts/units, the overall creative impulse and vision, and of course the painting and basing, are the key features for me, I think, and this project is no exception (although I'm not certain how I missed the first larger installment from late 2016!).
The standouts here for me are: the Brock Riders (love 'em!), the wonderful plasticard work on the giant's armour, as well as the spectacular painting on his flesh, something else I've forgotten right now, and the staff car - all wonderful! Keep up the fantastic work!
Edit: the movement trays! That's the thing I forgot on my list! Love the movement trays, in particular the heat/glow effect in each slot that you won't see until casualties start to be lost. Absolutely wonderful attention to detail.

Great stuff.
Not sure if this would be a helpful bit, but one easy way to do a similar base type to those for a whole lot less than buying resin bases is to use a saw that can cut stone and use slices of the more bubbly looking lava rock that tends more towards black from the start.

With regards to the bases: That is a very good point about using lava rock ( which I did use for some of the character minis and gyrocopter). For the Infantry, Cavalry , Giant and Mammoth I used resin bases as they weren't that expensive in the scheme of things. All of the vehicles are on scratch built bases using cork sheet, with the lava flow being done with thick PVA glue. As I have limited hobby time I try to trade off expense vs time and the vehicle bases work out the most expensive to buy in resin and the easiest to do in cork.

I've received my new minis from Russian alternative and have been putting then together.
First up some Hobgoblin infantry. I've thrown a few hand weapons amongst them so that they can be fielded as a "mixed" weapon unit.

Impressive! I didn't think much of that model when I saw it built stock, but as a Chaos Dwarf airship it works much better aesthetically.
Thought about a Dragon Rampant role for it yet?

I was originally looking at Reduced unit Heavy Riders + Ranged Weapons + Flying + Venomous ( Ranged) which works out at 10 points. The problem is it only has a ranged weapon distance of 12" which is a little short.
I'll have to have a proper play.....

I don't see it travelling very fast. Would a heavy missiles start point make more sense? There is an upgrade in Lion Rampant of Pavise which gives armour 3/4 against melee/shooting for 2 points. So Heavy Missile, Flying, Pavise gives 8 points.

"Befuddle Thee" is good to replicate a bombardment as it automatically batters an enemy unit and "Dragons Breath" is a good choice to replicate it creating a smoke screen to protect it from missiles! Quite a handful for 10 points!!!!

Agreed. The Mounted Missiles upgrade is more reliable but it really doesn't do much when it goes off. Power Bolt is one of the three hardest-hitting shots in the game - but if you're positioned to do a 5+ Attack order instead of 7+ casting roll, the former is still probably the way to go unless you really need to preserve SP.
At least with a 10-point unit on the table you shouldn't have too many turns where the majority of you army winds up napping after a bad activation roll. You could even play around with the other units all having Wild Charge and/or Hatred (which seems very in theme for Chaos Dwarves) so you risk less with having the dreadzep spend its time early on trying for casting.

99% of the models are resin. I find it easier to work with and less prone to chipping if they get knocked!
The only metal models are the odd Classic mini (Sorcerer Prophet on the Chariot and the one mounted on the Giant) or the hard to find character model (the female dwarf gunner). Also the resin minis from Russian Alternative are cheaper!!!

The air for miles around must be filled with the smell of burning wolfhide when that unit's out riding. Although I suppose the overall choking volcanic fumes tend to drown that out.

Finally completed my first lot of human slaves. I have tried to make them look like they have just been dragged away from their normal tasks to fight by arming them with "tools" ( hammers, picks etc). They are modified GW minis with some Mantic bits and a Frostgrave head on one.
I should have them based and ready to go shortly.

That unit is just brilliant. Love the overseer at the back in particular; but the grim slaves fit the bill - I find them even more frightening than the Chaos Dwarfs themselves. I think they must know how to walk on hot coals - or at least I hope they do!

Well I decided to do a slaver caravan for use with a Mordheim war band as well as something different to go with my army ( no idea of stats yet for Dragon Rampant).

Excellent use of that cage rager. I'm still convinced that Privateer's range of figures deserves much wider use in other games. So much potential overlooked - I assume because they're kind of expensive and perceived as being tied to their specific game systems.

Thanks mate. Not thought of using it as siege giant. I would be interested to see what you come up with. RA is " Russian Alternative " who produce some of the nicest Chaos Dwarf minis I've seen! I can't recommend them enough, nice casts at very reasonable prices ( especially the resin ones which are excellent value IMHO )

I think they look tall because they aren't so "squat" and wide as a lot of GW stuff, Height-wise they are bang on.
