Title: Star Traveller (Star Trek in 15mm) Battle Report
Post by: Oldben1 on August 22, 2016, 04:31:45 AM
After watching a few episodes of the original Star Trek with my 9 year old son I thought it might be fun to play some Star Trek lite games with my son.  I made the terrain, but the miniatures were painted by Calimero.  I used the Away team rules for combat.

Here is the board.  I thought I would go with a standard arid desert planet with a red sky.  The crew is exploring an unknown planet looking for Deterium crystals to help power their warpdrive.  The red dots represent hostiles or crystal deposits.

After explaining the roles of the characters, my son was quick to let the red shirt (security) do all the initial exploration with Spock handling the scanning.

the first blip is a cluster of eggs as well as a facehugger.  My son had not seen Alien, so was grossed out as I went into great detail.  Spock was able to make some careful observations before the facehugger before it went in for a kiss.

(https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8014/29066305931_fd568657fb_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Lhuq6H)Star Trek (https://flic.kr/p/Lhuq6H) by oldben1 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/26861900@N00/), on Flickr
the second blip was deterium, but the third was a nasty bunch of aliens.  My son made a quick retreat and started blasting away.

(https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8277/28858595220_a2034f24c5_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/KY8QWy)Star Trek (https://flic.kr/p/KY8QWy) by oldben1 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/26861900@N00/), on Flickr

More aliens joined the battle.  Captain Kirk was karate chopping aliens left and right but the red shirt fell quickly.

Eventually McCoy and Spock were able to blast away as well but Spock was injured at the very end.

The Away Team returned with 2 Deterium deposits and 2 injured crewman.  The team may add an extra crewman in the next adventure as well as one weapon upgrade,  Spock will have to sit out in the next mission and the red shirt died of his injuries.

This was a fun game, although trying to explain the transporter to my son seemed difficult.  I was surprised by how smart a lot of his decisions were.  It was fun to add in the suspense (red blips) and describe the horrible aliens in detail.

Looks like a great game!

You're tempting me to get into another genre/scale :)

"and the red shirt died of his injuries"

Lol.  Sounds like both of you had a blast!  And he really understood they canary-like role very well.  :)

I have the Astros figures (unpainted) as well as several painted Aliens.  But, to be honest, I had never even considered using them together in any sort of scenario.  That was a brilliant idea.

Thanks so much for sharing. And I hope these are just a few if many more games of you two together.  What an awesome bonding experience.

As was said in a Star Gate episode by one nerdy scientist to another (when in a perilous situation) "We might as well be wearing Red t-shirts !"

Thanks for this.

I looked up and downloaded the Away Team rules. Seems like a very simple set of rules for a quick game.

It was a lot of fun, I'm planning the next game soon.  I have so many episodes to draw inspiration from.  I need to figure out the stats for a giant, intelligent, telekinetic cloud though! lol

The author of Away Team also wrote a very good Star Trek RPG called Far trek, available for free as well.  Pretty good in terms of tables, races and creating different planets to explore.

Did you find a use for the IQ stat?
Title: Re: Star Traveller (Star Trek in 15mm) Battle Report
Post by: Oldben1 on August 23, 2016, 08:37:34 PM
I tried to get my son to use Spock to analyze the alien body structure, and explained the ideas of parasites.

Kirk also used his intelligence to figure out how to defeat the creatures (ie run and shoot and watch out for acid blood).
I may have some further missions where repair, or science analysis plays a larger role.  My son wasn't really interested  in science, more blasting.

Sounds like your son is a quick study.

Have to agree with him when dealing with aliens, more shooting and less studying seems like a wise strategy.

I love the idea of Captain Kirk karate-chopping space demons!

I don't think an 'official' Aliens/Star Trek crossover has been done, which is odd given some of the bizzare stuff that gets drawn:-

It almost smacks of having to use Pulp Alley style challenges that need to be completed using the IQ skill, eg Spock wants to access the alien computer, so he uses his IQ skill + a tricorder, Scotty has to unlock a sealed door, so uses his IQ skill + a tool box.

What stats did you use for the Aliens?

I used the Raptor stats, added faster movement, melee attack, and extra reach with the snappy tongue thing.

The turkeys, I mean face huggers are faster but low roll to hit.

Here is a copy of the board:

Today my son and I are were playing a short mission, a medical emergency at a mining facility with a reactor leak.  No combat in this mission, but plenty of rolling to avoid radiation exposure.  I developed a few charts as well to represent the health of the casualties scattered around the board.

Unfortunately my son rolled poorly on the radiation exposure table several times.

Eventually he was able to start dragging the survivors to the shuttle since the radiation interfered with the transporter ;)

The crew blasts off to treat the sick and injured aboard the starship.

All in all a fun adventure and quick.  I used the Away Missions rules again and was able to use the intelligence stat for the medical officers.  Only one survivor was pronounced dead on the scene.  Nurse Chapel will be out for the next 3 missions but SPock can return for the next one!

Inspired by this topic, I’ve just ordered and received my starship crew from CP Models:

https://cpmodels.co.uk/shop/sf1528-starship-crew/

I actually ordered two sets of them.  They look a little top-heavy (lots of hair), but they still look the part.

Long time ago I got a shuttle from BK, so all I need to work on now is what scatter terrain pieces to put on the playing surface that have an alien or outworlder look.

I need to order a couple of sets of those from CP Models.

Warbases do a 28mm MDF shuttle for £10 https://warbases.co.uk/product/figaro-lunar-lander/ (https://warbases.co.uk/product/figaro-lunar-lander/)

If you want die cast, have a look at the Eaglemoss shuttles.

As far as shuttles go, Halmark did an ornament shuttle a number of years back.  Cut off the wire  to connect it to the lights and clip off the hook part and it is the right scale for 15mm.

Oh, if only Kirk would Karate chop. No... the only thing better than a good Red Shirt death is the Star Trek Punch!

To the kidneys... Do Gorn have kidneys?

It is so iconic that Lower Decks did an entire bit about how the ship's #1 beats a huge alien using only "Kirk-Fu"

Great read, and so much fun. Glad your boy got to set his phasers to kill! The Xenomorphs aren't likely to succumb to Kirk's seduction skill.  lol

Not sure how old your boy is, but perhaps you could make some "science discovery" cards that show something gross. Spock analyzes the face hugger and you get this picture:

Explaining the acid blood could show real acid eating away at an orange for effect?

I almost always think in pictures, and as the old saying tells us "a picture is worth a thousand words." A gross picture is usually worth at least three thousand words, in my experience  ;)
