Here's what I'm busy working at every precious spare minute of the evening...
Edit: THIS is more like it! :-)
At the front (including the rag-tag stooping person) you see some encounter figs.
In the second row, at hte far left, enter the alcoholized heroes and their ½-grade diggers, followed by the German Archaeologists and the Turkish trader/antiquarian/weapons dealer/you name it Hasan Köse and his henchmen.
At the back, a bit blurred, the goody-two-shoes British, trying to prevent theft of irreplacable works of art and other contraband (generally making themselves a pain in the backside of everyone else), and the hulking Tonka with his mysterios Evil Hooded Minions.
Even further back, some civilians I haven't decided whether to use or not for the first scenario.
Mind you, none of the figs are fully painted (except maybe the mummies - and they could use a touch of further highlights...).
I'll let you in on more details as I near the day of the first shoot.
Edit2: I really have to get me some proper lighting set up (and learn how to suppress the flash on my digi-cam)
-
Hello,
looks interesting. Why not finnishing the project until september and present it in Bad Oldesloe on the TST Convention in Schleswig Holstein. For further information ask Loki.
Björn
-
Much better picture now.
I like your start. It looks like some interesting groups you're putting together.
Keep us posted on how it goes.

Björn
I hope to finish it by the midst of March. I have no other pending paint-projects at the moment, so I hope to finish 1 group each week.
I have to make myself some Tomb Blocks (www.matakishi.com), about 24 objective/encounter markers (12 outdoor desert (round), 12 indoor temple/ruin (square)), and a couple of dunes. Maybe a ruin or two.
We'll see. It will definitely be ready by September, hopefully playtested and ready, if I decide to go to Bad Oldesloe. I may, as, alas, I cannot make it to Tactica. Too many other obligations, I'm affraid :(
-
Gleder meg til å se mer bilder av miniatyrene dine Argonor.
-
but you will be at the Tactica ?
and at Bad Oldesloe we play The Secrets of the Hidden Temple - Behind the Camera  I hope so
-
No, as I wrote, I cannot make it to Tactica.
I'll try really hard to come to Bad Oldesloe, as I'm really looking forward to meet some of you guys 'in the flesh'.
And the Title will be 'The Secrets of the Hidden Temple' - the 'Behind the Camera is a joke on all those 'commercial' reports about new films; I could also have called it 'The Making Of'.
@Morten: Mange tak! Jeg vil forsøge at holde forummet opdateret på mine fremskridt. I denne uge får jeg desværre ikke rigtigt malet noget...
Sorry, guys, but Norwegian is almost Danish, and I had to reply to the greeting :)
-
Sorry, guys, but Norwegian is almost Danish, and I had to reply to the greeting :)
I have no problem with you guys talking Danish, as long as you tell us what you're discussing ;)
The only Danish I know is: En oel, tak. (Or something like that  )
-
Ha I ask my Mom waht that means she is Danish or my sister she speak also Danish .
So you never can deride us in Danish

Øl (Danish ø = ö) is, as everyone ought to know, Beer :-)
I was just telling Morten, that I hope to keep the forum posted on my progress, but, alas, I do not get anything painted this week... because of Handball World Championshis in Germany....
Edit: Just edited out all those sports comments. I have been two weeks (at least) working at my first group 'The Archaeologists and their Diggers), and they will appear here shortly - still have some details to do on du Bois...
Don't expect too much regarding painting quality - be warned!
-
I'm still not quite an expert with my digicam, but at least I managed to suppress the flash this time
I'm having real trouble with the zoom settings... dunno which to use, and this wasn't quite right...
But, as promised, the alcoholized archaeologists and their diggers - all WestWind.... a bit blurred, but if you imagine having gobbled down half a bottle of gin...
Before everyone starts yelling: Yes, they probably could use darker shading and more highlights!
I may even add some, when I feel more comfortable with the layering technique (and can do it quicker).....
Edit: I think, I have to do something about DuBois' face, though....
need som highlights under the eyes. Amazing how a photograph
brings out such things....
-

I think they´re perfect! Especially the white cloth areas! And those faces (well, the white guys´ at least!) are easily recognized, too.
-
Nice! I like them! Who's the big guy at the back of the first pic?
-
Thanks for the nice words, but I do think I have still some way to go. The skin of the arabs is painted like I paint my Uruk-Hai - a bit too dark, and not very photogenic (not in a blurred pic, anyway).
I have to go back to them and put lighter shades on as highlights - I just do not have the time to experiment further right now, as I'm already
2 weeks behind schedule (I had hoped to have all groups ready for a game midst March, but....)
-
Nice! I like them! Who's the big guy at the back of the first pic?
If you mean the bald guy with the naked torso, it's Tonka, a 'brawling super hero' from Black Hat.
Edit:
I'm going to tweak the .45A rules to make him a Grade 3 Enforcer with fists that act as clubs at range 0. He works for some sinister, mysterious master (who may have had something to do with Tonkas bulkyness), and is going to lead a bunch of mysterious Evil Hooded Minions in 'The Secrets of the Hidden Temple'.
-
Edit:

You'll like the Prizefighter archetype in the new book (just a little over a month away). He is basically a Grade 3 Enforcer with some boxing Special Abilties like Haymaker and Sucker Punch.
-

I think we had this conversation before :)
Yes, I may even get my hand on that book before my first game, if I keep painting at this tremendously slow speed
And Prizefighter seems MUCH more appropriate for a
'the Master's Champion'-type like Tonka 8)
-
Here's the next chapter of this ongoing tale of my efforts to get a pulp game staged....
Hasan Köse, Mob Boss/3 (Antiquarian, Smuggler, Arms Trader, Spy, Mob Boss, Camel Vendor, Slave Trader, Hired Gun... you name it) and his trusted companions (a Driver/1, Bruno/1, and Gat Man/1)...
Pulp Figures, Artizanx3
(http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/8954/hasan01lz5.jpg)
The German 'Archaeologists'... my apologies to the Prof for
stealing some painting ideas from his pics of the same bunch...
The fellow on the right was meant to be an albino....
I'm not sure, what do you think..?
All West Wind
(http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/4153/germans02gi4.jpg)
And finally the 'good' guys once more... I REALLY have to hightlight the skin of those diggers....
-
They look great and I really like the albino. You didn't go too far toward white, but just enough to show him as very pale.
Awesome!
-
Thanks - I'm really a little proud of the face of Hasan Köse AKA 'The Unpleasant Mr. M'. One of my better results (also a very easy sculpt to paint, I must say - applause to Bob Murch!).
-
I'm reanimating this because I've reanimated the project.
Expect to see pics of the painted Brits, the rebased mummies, and a new 3x3 desert table with terrain very soon!
-
Finished painting the new 3x3 desert table today. Pics with terrain and the brits due for tomorrow...
-
Indeed very well job!
-
Thanks - all painted about 1½ year ago - broke my neck on the khaki uniforms of the Brits and had a painter's block for some months. I'm just about to arrange some terrain on the table to take a couple of pics - hope to get them up this evening :D
-
Thanks for re-animating as I would have missed this otherwise. 8)
Great stuff, I like the albino to.
-
Here comes the table:

It's not the layout I'm going to use for the game, just a quick setup.
The temple/statue stuff in the NW corner is WIP. I need to finish basecoating the large piece and then drybrush both pieces with Foudry Base Sand Light.
-
And the Brits (a bit blurred, sorry - need to pick up on my lighting):
-
Fantastic. :o
-
Fantastic. :o
Thanks, but not really. Just inspired by this place ;)
The unfinished temple-thingy is an aquarium-deco, the statue (of Osiris, Horus, and Seth, btw.) is from a £1-store.
The ruined 3-piece large mastaba and the Anubis are pre-painted pieces I got from Conquest quite some time ago.
The houses are from Hovels.
The grass and palm trees are cake deco stuff from Pfeil and Holing.
My own effort:
Basing the vegetation on CDs, making the oasis (hardboard, 5mm foamcard´, and filler + GW water effect), making the hill/dune (hardboard, styropor (what a mess), - and, of course, sanding and painting the homemade stuff, and painting the buildings. And the table (10 mm chipboard).
The camel/dromedary is from Ebob, and the cobra is from a very old Citadel snake swarm blister.
And the Brits from Pulp Figures.
The reason for the different style in basing is, that native desert creatures/figs I'm quite sure will only be used on desert boards are desert-based, while figs I expect to use in different settings are based using my 'all-round' method (brown base, buff sand, some flock).
-
looking good,
how do you have the patience to go round £1 shops looking for scenery?!? I walk through the door, get cut up by a mob of people, sigh and leave (saying that I did once get a £1 hobby knife with 12 blades and a cutting mat in one)
which paints did you use for the board?
-
very nice!!!
-
how do you have the patience to go round £1 shops looking for scenery?!?
I bring my kids (girls, 2.5 and 5.5) and let them roam freely. That clears a path ;)
Seriously, I just browse through whenever I pass one. It's quite easy to very quickly spot if something interesting is present. And if I see something that might be useful, I move in to investigate further. Plus, those stores rarely are THAT crowded here in DK lol
Next up: The re-based mummies, sitting on my paint-table with half-finished bases right now (I will drybrush the bases and take a pic tonight).
And after that, a native tomb-robber driven insane by the gory death of his mates and the untold horrors below.... Basecoated him Saturday, but was busy with removing falling leaves from the lawn and mowing it Sunday....
-
Very nice. Its great to see a project go from the start and develop. I like the table, too, lots of gaming potential :)
-
Absolutely!
Adventure/pulp gaming in Sahara, or the Gobi - Gondorians raiding Harad - WWII or WWWII Afrika Korps vs Monties Desert Rats... Action near the Rio Grande - possibilities are legio! Oh - yes, Legions! Romans in Syria, other ancients... ;D
-
Unfortunately the $2 Shops (as they're known here) don;t usually have stuff of such high quality... well, that's a contradiction if I ever heard one ;) But I mean, most of the stuff in there isn't good enough even for gaming!
I will have to keep looking though, those pieces are wicked!
-
Here come the mummies, rebased from green-flocked, square bases (ya know waddamean):
I need to touch up on a couple of feet, then they'll be ready to wreck havoc...
-
The mad-driven tomb-robber has been finished. Pics of him and some encounter-markers hopefully tonight (perhaps with a couple of shots of a LotR game (yesterday) using them and the new desert table on an elevated gaming-table - a wonderful invention of Operator5 which I've elaborated on :D )
I've also managed to finish painting the scenery-pieces from the earlier post, so I'm quite happy with the progress I've managed over the last few weeks (bearing in mind that the project had come to a complete stillstand).
I now need to make some floor plans for the temple (which will be placed on the 'base-table' of the elevated board, if/when the players find the entrance), some additional encounter-markers, and perhaps paint a couple of evil hooded minions + Tonka (but they're not absolutely necessary) - then I'll be ready to roll out this Chapter 1 of a series of linked scenarios I'm planning for the winter. I shall be adding some minis/terrain (civilians, animal-encounters, river, buildings) to the collection between games for diversity... and maybe a new group of contestants for the Quest for the Sun Scarab (an artefact rumoured to have been created by a deranged ancient cult of Osiris, having found a way to revive the dead).
.45A, here we come (at last)!
-
Great stuff mate, I really like the way this is going. Looking forward to seeing the first adventure. :)
-
I really hope to get it on before Christmas, but it's always hard to get players assembled if we're talking December :? I'll try to speed up the process the next week, so maybe I can get this on tracks for the last weekend of November.... (but I need some stuff from Black Cat, hmmm... must get an order done...).
-
Here's the mad-driven tomb robber.
I wanted him to look really frightened, which I think I sort of managed.
I'm not sure about his skin... is it too dark for an Egyptian? I used Foundry Dusky flesh, rounded off with FDF Light mixed with GW Bronzed Flesh - but maybe I should try starting with the mid-tone instead of the shade?
-
Hard to comment on the skin because of the very yellow light of the pic, but nice work on the eyes, very scary !
meow,
Matt
-
Yeah, I don't know what has happened to the lamps I use - the last couple of weeks all the pics I've taken have this soft yellowish lighting....
-
Looks like it's gonna be a fantastic scenario.
Will keep a close eye on this one.
-
Am working on the final mini for this scenario at the moment.
Need to do some greenstuffing on some resin bases I'll use as in-door encounter-markers; print out, and glue to cardboard the floor plans of the temple itself (including making a set of long, narrow stairs leading down to the ante-chamber), and then flesh out a couple of characers, and I'll be all set.
The scenario is intended to be run with the .45A rules WITH a GM, preferably 4 players and tha GM running a group of mysterious villains for extra spice (alternatively, a 5th player can run those, or they can be left out, if things are getting too messy).
So, hopefully I can get some players together in a couple of weeks time, and get this baby rolling (should be the 'pilot' for at series of linked scenarios - now that i have some groups painted up, I only have to add some nitbits here and there from scenario to scenario... I hope ;) ).
-
It's looking good Niels. :)
Looking forward to the end product in all its Technicolor glory!

Well, I watched 'The Spy Who Loved Me' Saturday (Danish TV is doing a 007-cavalcade), and the Egyptians seemed VERY dark-skinned - so I'll stick to dark skin for him, and my diggers (but I MUST get some highlights on the diggers!)...
-
For some reason I hadn't seen your thread before, so I've just read from the start.
Very impressive and should be a joy to play on.
I don't think your Egyptian skin-tone is too dark, after all there is a wide variation in their tones depending on ancestry etc.
This chap is very dark, presumably has Nubian or African ancestry:
whilst this one is paler:
I think yours looks fine :)
-
I'll stick with him :)
Finished the last miniature (Tonka) I need for the project, yesterday. I just have to touch up a bit on a hooded minion, and then I'll take a pic of the weird villains group.
So now I just need to finish some encounter-markers (if the weather behaves, I'll probably be spray-priming them with a batch this weekend), and get the floorpans for the temple done.
And flesh out profiles for the weird villain group, plus do a little re-arranging of the written scenario - I'm going to make a GM-section, as this is intended to be run by a GM, or at least only one of the players delving into all the details, to make a more fun experience for the other participants.
I'm not going to publish the scenario here (not unless Oprerator5 allows it, that is, as it will contain profiles of various archetypes from the Ratttrap books), but I'll probably send it to Rich in word-format so he can change whatever he wants and use/publish it, if deemed worthy. It will not, however, contain descriptions of skills and the likes. You'll still have to get the books to know what they do ;)
Maybe, just maybe, I'll manage to get this game running before Christmas - depends on how fast I get the last pieces together (which, again, depends on how often my little girls actually go to sleep when they are put in bed lol ).
-
I've been to Upper Egypt, and I met Egyptians of all shades. From folks whose skin colour is not that much darker than a European's, right through to black people, and everything in between.
-
great looking figures! superb!
-
Thanks! :)
I can now say for certain, that this project will not be finished before Christmas.
I have a fortnight vacation, starting Dec 20th, and apart from a few days at my in-laws, I shall be getting as much of the missing stuff ready as I can.
I am currently painting on the next-last batch of encounter markers (the last batch of 4 has to be primed white and washed with Devlan Mud, as they all are completely covered with skulls), and making floorplans for the subterranean temple.
-

I know that I'm going OT, but the location Plynkes state is part of a very famous WW! British song, whya you mention such location? just curious.
It was sung in one of the best WW2 movie "DAS-DOOTE".
Piero
-
Piero, you mean Tipperary?
Just for a laugh. Along with Colonials, the Great War (as I like to call WWI) is my area of interest. I like the song, and it fits my World War One vibe.
-

Piero
it was sung (whistled) also in the film: "The Russians are coming"
-
I know that I'm going OT,
Be my guest ;)
-
Tipperary was one of my favourite, there is a new version sung bt Russina Army Chorus, very imponent ;D
two years ago I was in Ireland, was a pity that I had no time to reach Tipperary, just for fun to see this famous city.
-
I have a computer game where you take control of a U-Boat and go out on patrols and such. It's all in nice 3D, you even can see inside your sub in 3D and watch your minions doing their jobs (which can you assign, according to their skills, or send them to bed if they're getting tired, etc.) Watching the sun set from the conning tower is nice, too.
One cool feature is the gramophone. You can import MP3 tracks into the game and the sailors can listen to them on the boat's gramophone. So of course I had to put "Tipperary" on there, to make it more like 'Das Boot' (well, it's more atmospheric than having them listen to Marvin Gaye or Beyoncé, which you could do).
I think it was a LAFer (WillieB, but I might be remembering wrong) who sent me the file, so thanks for that. :)

I'm not PC expert, let me know how to send the Russian Army Chorus Tipperary version
( same in the movie DasBoote), is an MP3 version and will great improve your PC game.

Have finished the floor plans for the temple, and fleshed out the mysterious villains group - now I just have to make some stairs leading down to the temple, and finish the Brits' character sheets...... (plus maybe make a dune or two, and affix some tent poles to the archaeologist's tent....)
I'm confident that this scenario will finally get played during January (if I can assemble the players for it, that is..) :)
-
Cut out 2 cd-sized dunes today (from the messy kind of styrofoam). Of course I could not find my bag of filler for mixing, so I sacrificed the last bit of ready-made filler from an old tube. Not enough to smooth them out, though, will have to go get some more filler tomorrow.....
-
Have finished painting all remaining encounter-markers (bases from Black Cat).
Upcoming weekend I shall finish the profiles for the Brits, and all that remains is to build the stairs leading down to the subterranean temple, and then get some players assembled.
I'd never thought that this project would take me so long to complete, but having suffered twice from painter's block because of khaki, having two small kids, and having a full time work together with a garden in need of mending.... well, let's just say I COULD probably have gotten there earlier by focussing more on the project and not allowing myself to wander off into other things from time to time - but......

No idea what you have edited in this post but you actually may post here whatever you want. WIP pics and so on, everything is no problem at all. "Must be finished" clause is just for the final outcome if you are going to claim the "finished" badge :)

Ah OK - I misinterpreted that. Will re-post some WIP later, then :)

Here we go again:

Re-basing WIP (I have to wait for the LocTite Powerglue gel to settle/dry :-[ ):

You will have noticed that I did not give the Turkish faction desert bases; they are not going to serve this project only, but will see use in a regular Pulp Alley league, and maybe also games of Strange Aeons/Von unaussprechlichen Kulten, so they got 'generic' bases.
Next task: Re-basing these (they WILL get new desert bases, though).

Looking good Niels!
-
Excellent work! ;)
-
Good to see this back Niels :)
-
So with a start date of January 2007, is this the oldest of the revived projects in our spiffy new "It's Alive!" board?
A pleasure going back through this project, which I'd forgotten about, and seeing all the excellent pulpy details. Looking forward to seeing it finished!
(Edit to answer my own question - the Prof's Outer Mongolia thread was started in September 2006, so this is the second-oldest of the revivals)
-
I've been around for quite a while lol
Thanks for all the nice words.
I think this was my first project inspired by being a member of this forum, so it's actually nice to get it back on tracks. And those minis have been screaming for bases to meet common LAF standards for quite a while (I actually took them out of my painted Pulp minis box several months ago and placed them on my elevated workspace - only to collect dust since then, I'm afraid).
-
Got started. Again, glue has to settle...
-
So, after almost 2 weeks without any any notable progress, I finally got tyhe diggers' bases finished yesterday:
WIP:

The final result:

I am in two minds if I should add some white to the buff and add another lighter hightlight - I think I'll have to see the minis on one of my desert boards to decide... :?
-
Next group done.

Next up some nasty encounters...
WIP shots on my blog as usual.

Lovely work mate! :)
I need to rebase my miniatures too. A pity that there about 200 of them :(
-

Do them in small batches, that way you get to complete stuff often, and you can sense the progress ;)
And, thanks - it's really amazing how big a difference the bases make; had I but understood this earlier, it would have saved me a lot of work. But, heck, I didn't have access to tufts and 'leaves' back then, anyway lol
-
Redid the bases on these 4 'encounters'.

After (note, that the Mummies were previously based on copper coins, which were replaced by steel washers for the magnetic properties):

Things have been a bit quiet, as I had to repair the dining table (it los 1/4 of its legs) before I could lay out my cutting mat and other accessories for the next step(s).
Can you guess what is going on?

Making some progress:

Details can be found on my blog, but it is a quite straightforward build, even for someone like me lol

Getting there... eventually....

I'm quite pleased with it - it must be the first ever completed gaming-related scratch-build by me, and though it has a few minor flaws, it should serve me well in games to come!
I'll see if I can get some paint slabbed on one of the next days, but I'm working nights this and tomorrow night, so I am going to sleep most of Thursday and Friday away, and the weekend is all but booked out by my in-Laws coming Saturday for delayed birthday celebration (yup, it's that time of the year, again), and the girls attending an event at their riding Club Sunday, so we'll see if I get anything done before Monday... ::)
-
Glued the metal base in place.

Painting still pendng... (not really in the mood)

Got some paint slabbed on.
First, base-coated/primed with a dark brown:

And a coat of golden brown (to make it match my aquarium deco pieces):

A bit more WIP...

With the deadline drawing close, I am once more spending some time on this.
The finished stairs:

Thanks - I actually just need to finish basing the mad grave robber, and then get everything out for a photo shoot, and I shall have accomplished what I set out to do for this challenge.
The project will then have been finished just a tiny bit beyond the original plans from way back (because of the re-basing of the minis), and I think I can then claim it fulfilled.
It does NOT mean, however, that my mind is not already seeing possibilities for expansions, but they will have to wait patiently in line as I am just now focussing on bringing some other old, almost forgotten projects back to life - most notably my ancient Citadel Undead army I purchased second hand about 20 years ago, and now am painting up for God of Battles.
-
Almost there... need to do the final touches on the grave robber, but have started setting up the table(s) for the finishing photo-session.
Maybe tomorrow will see it done.

Almost 8 years and 5 months after its conception, The Secrets of the Hidden Temple is now completed.
This set-up comprises the full original cast, and then some that have been added to my collection over the years.

I have plans about expanding some of the factions into full Pulp Alley leagues, but that is another project.
I am very happy to have finally reached this stage of completion with this - these LAF challenges and Painting Clubs are doing me well in terms of productivity!

I think it is safe to say that you took your time. lol
But the stuff sure looks awsome. Well done.

This thread proves the ancients were right about eternal life, brilliant! 8)
-
Thanks - more pics o'er at me blog, btw. :)
-
Brilliant!
Please bring it for Horisont!
-
Yesss. Bring it to horisont!
Can't wait to have a look at it at the Attic Attack as well :)
-
Sweet jebuz, then I have to start the project about getting the factions up to strength for Pulp Alley Leagues right away :o
Well, probably mostly the 'good guys' (the archeologists - notably one or two female expedition members to be abducted the clever assistants), but one or two of the other factions will probably also need obne or two additional models.
Not sure if I can get that done on time for Attic Attack, with vacation abroad just around the corner, etc., but Horisont should be manageable.
-
I'll bring my own league (or two) along :)
Honestly just want to take a look at the table, as it looks very impressive. If we can have a game, so much the better, but no stress :P
-
Oh, I really like the idea of doing the underground areas like that. Great idea! Thanks for sharing. :-* :-*

Thank you, Mila!
Actually, the underground area is going to be placed UNDER the surface; I have an 'elevated table' with foldable legs that sits about 30-40cm over another table on which the Hidden Temple can be placed. The legs have dowel pegs that fit into holes in the lower surface to ensure stability and no skidding.
-
I couldn't help myself - had to rebase the last minis, anyway ::)
Here's the first.
-
And another one (I am aware, the bases are not exactly 'desert-themed', but I am going to use these in a large number of settings, and thus I use my 'all-round' solution).
One more, and I have run out of minis to rebase - and can start planning what models I want to use for the Pulp Alley expansion for this setup!
-
Lovely work, I especially like your board set-up. Is that an underground section on the black table?

Exactly - the 'Hidden Temple' is buried under centuries of sandstorms! :D

Originally, I did not intend to rebase all the slotta minis contained in this project - but as time went on, and I got more and more hooked on using consisten washer-basing, one thing led to another, and this is the last slotta-based mini I had left, relating to The Secrets of the Hidden Temple:

He looks suitably sinister, lovely painting.

Very nice PJ, Niels.
-
Thank you, guys.
He was painted a while ago, just put him on a washer and did the 'desert' finish this time around.
