“Treason never prosper, What’s the reason, For if it prospers, None dare call it treason”
Sir John Harington, (d:1612), inventor of the flush water closet.
Quite some years ago, the team I’m part of did a series of demo games based on the Prayer Book Rebellion 1547-49 and taken from a WI article ‘Landsknecht’s in Devon’. I did the terrain and the rest of the team produced all the figures. It was great fun (highly recommended and adaptable to quite a few periods - I could fancy it as a VBCW affair) and as part of the background research I became aware of the various revolts that erupted during the Tudor period:
Yorkshire Rebellion 1489
Cornish Rebellion 1497
Lincolnshire (the Pilgrimage of Grace) 1536
Western (Prayer Book) Rebellion 1547-49
Rebellions of Commonwealth 1548-49
Wyatt’s Rebellion 1553-54
Northern Rebellion 1569-70
plus a variety of anti-tax disturbances on a regular basis.
And then there’s the what-if of a possible Spanish invasion in 1588.
And I discovered the Foundry Elizabethan Swashbucklers, possibly my favourite range of all time. So, in the background, I started painting these and the Vendel range (now Hoka Hey) and I seem to have arrived at a usable force after about 10 years (slow I know).
So here’s Sir John, the 4th Lord Elpus, and the force, which can be split various ways to provide Rebels and Royalist forces for a small scale skirmish game on a virtually 1:1 basis:

And, much better than these new-fangled bang sticks, Bows:

Plus some Gentlemen Adventurers:

The whole force assembled:
(https://i.postimg.cc/rmSmwTrK/DSC-0488.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/cgLZFVTS)
And a close-up, a doughty Yeoman, ready to resist the imposition of foreign religions, unjust taxation or minor changes to liturgical text:

(https://i.postimg.cc/3wcjF8yW/Kentish_Fellow_2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/8FLr1VmV)
And the Spanish are coming, here’s a teaser, the elegant Don Quinoddin, come to impose the true faith on the misguided English:
(https://i.postimg.cc/PrW4nn7F/Don-Qui-Noddin.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hfGxV6c9)
Figures are, as stated, Foundry Swashbucklers or Vendel/Hoka Hey, with a couple of Foundry Elizabethans lurking in the background (but really too small to be usable with the heroic stature of the others).
Painting by me, with a few exceptions done by Dags.

What a great start! :-* I've always liked this period, but I have too many irons in the wargaming fire already. Maybe when Pikeman's Lament arrives I'll give it a go.
-
Cracking stuff 8)
I'd heard of Wyatt's rebellion but none of the others, you learn something new everyday :)
cheers
James

Lovely stuff. Might they also stretch to Essex's attempted coup d'etat?
-
Great stuff 8) 8)
-
Excellent painting.
Love them.
-
Lovely work, looks like they really suit a large-ish skirmishing style of rules.
-
Really good stuff!
-
Love'em! :-* Have to resist those damned liturgical backsliders lol
LB
-
Sweet stuff! A surprisingly rarely seen period.
-
They look excellent :-* ;)
You have also given me some ideas for alternative uses for my Border Reiver collection. Until now they had just seen action raiding Scots farms or beating up the Catholics in Ireland, now they can trash the place all over England! lol
-
Thanks for all the kind comments chaps.
Not sure about the rules yet, currently reviewing Once Upon A Time In the West Country to see if that would work
Lovely stuff. Might they also stretch to Essex's attempted coup d'etat?
Good call, I'd forgotten that one.

The people are commonly bent to novelties and to factions and most ready to receive that doctrine that seemeth contary to the present state and that inclineth to liberty, as Archbishop Whitgift was only saying over nuncheon the other day ;)
There's an excellent book that covers all of these novelties - Tudor Rebellions by Fletcher and MacCulloch (5th edition preferred as its been updated in the light of recent research).
-
Lovely stuff. As someone else who loves Elizabethan stuff, youve also got all the raids in the spainish Caribbean as soon as youve got some spainards.
-
What a lovely looking army, worth taking a look at Donnybrook as a set of rules too or lion rampant. If you are after more musketmen casting room miniatures have a selection of those you have with head swaps, and some nice border horce and reiters
-
I'll second Donnybrook , I had a game with my dutch revolt stuff which is the same era (and same figures) and it worked really well and if your looking for some spaniards to play against gimme a shout.
-
Donnybrook gets a vote from me as well, lovely collection I've painted quite a few of these figures myself and they are lovely large figures for painting.
-
Excellent stuff, I'd surely like to stand up to them with my Landsknechts, though yours are much better.
-
Colourful nice stuff! :)
-
For rules take a look at perfect Captains "Actions" there are also numerous version ecw, etc.
William
-
Great looking figures - are you planning to add a few horse?
You might want to look at Irregular Wars as a possible rule set - this is a small battle set, with each base representing a company or so of men, it produces a very enjoyable game.
-
Thanks again for all the kind comments chaps and the rules suggestions. The Perfect Captain's set is my current bedtime reading.
The Spanish are coming are here!

Gentlemen adventurers and un-piked Pikemen (I’m assuming a scenario with just one or two Spanish ships making English landfall and the landing party being mainly a raiding party, where pikes might be more of a liability than an asset):

(https://i.postimg.cc/2ySDNNFp/fullsizeoutput-253.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/qhSY2Y5Q)
and the Tercio of the Sextons, a sombre lot:

Who will easily double-up as the London Trained Bands for internal revolts with the addition pf a different standard bearer base (and yes, I spotted the flag’s green band error, but only when I was photographing the damn thing. These are my first attempts at hand-painting flags, I like the texture but I need to improve on my straight lines!):
(https://i.postimg.cc/Dfxhdmn7/fullsizeoutput-256.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Hj8FTYrN)
And yes, some English horse in due course, first two elements are:
Border Horse (painted by Dags):

and Demi-Lancers (in need of a flag):

How delightful and interesting. :)
Spanish raids were a real problem in the 1590s: http://west-penwith.org.uk/raid.htm
-
Excellent. Love this era. Must play with mine more often... ::)
-
Excellent. I do like these.
-
Fantastic looking collection of figures the various figure ranges blend really well :-*
-
I agree with all the above complimentary remarks - really a handsome collection you are building there.
I agree with you about those Foundry Elizabethan Adventurers - an excellent range of figures.

Cracking stuff! I must get on with painting mine.

Thanks for the kind comments chaps.
This little lot got a few additions and an outing at last, at t'Other Partizan. A Spanish landing force from the Armada faced off against an English county militia - the Spanish objective was to loot 6 buildings by standing in them unopposed for 1 full move. Rules were a mash up of Lion Rampant and Pikeman's Lament:
Spanish musketeers provide a formidable line while a bunch of caliver men prepare to loot the barm:
(https://s19.postimg.cc/4x64xw4r7/IMG_0733.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/5moxa95an/)
And a forceful Spanish pike block, led by the Cannibalistic Cardinal of Cadiz, holds the centre:
(https://s19.postimg.cc/so5ifzx8j/IMG_0734.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/840ohihhb/)
Doughty English light horse prepare to charge the musketeers (big mistake!):(https://s19.postimg.cc/gz1is1lpf/IMG_0738.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/3uvyfctnj/)
And a quick overview of the action:
(https://s19.postimg.cc/9vtncet4j/IMG_1481.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/f78jx4f73/)
Overall it worked well, especially since my team mates hadn't had a chance to practice the rules beforehand (and thanks to Stuart from Army Royal for sight of his amendments - very helpful) and I can see me adding more to this project.
-
Jolly good show :)
Always fancied doing some coastal invasion type games as it can be done for many periods of British history 8)
-
I think it would make a good mini-campaign, Spanish (or whoever) professional troops moving through unfamiliar territory, needing to source supplies as well as gain political objectives, and less well-trained but locally knowledgeable English (or whoever) troops trying to stop them.
The Perfect Captain's battle finder system might make a good starting point:

Very inspirational indeed, I think I will dig out me reivers.
Did you say you had rule amendments?
-
Barbary pirates have always had a certain appeal :D
-
Nice work!
-
Very well painted, an excellent collection and they look great on the table!
Eager to see more of you! Cheers!
-
Excellent photos.
Great collection of figures.
Love the look of the game.
-
Splendid stuff! Inspired me to order the Tudor Rebellions book you recommended, and begin considering a Foundry order. Thanks very much for sharing this project!

Wonderful board and figures. :-* :-*
-
Wonderful looking army.
-
Great looking game. Time to dig out the Border Reivers, you've given me a few new ideas.
-
Thanks chaps, very kind.
Although I accept no responsibility for any additional financial expenditure I may have caused lol
-
Fantastic game ! Thanks for posting.
-
Good work, Mr Troop. If only some bugger would gird his loins and make a 1513 range of Tudor troops.....
-
They look excellent :-* ;)
You have also given me some ideas for alternative uses for my Border Reiver collection. Until now they had just seen action raiding Scots farms or beating up the Catholics in Ireland, now they can trash the place all over England! lol
Definitely plus one to that and all the nice comments.
-
You know how it goes - "I've filled 2 Really Useful Boxes with painted figures, I'd better call this finished".
And then some swine goes and release some more Really Nice Figures!
In this case, TAG's new Tudor Rabble give me a chance to increase the rebellious English:

Plus the Earl of Warwick, attempting to restore order:

Really enjoyed painting these - looking forward to more hint hint
-
Very nice. Have you seen the new Peasants War figures from Steel Fist?
-
Yes, they look nice and while a bit early should make a few additions to my Tudor rioters.
