Title: Random fantasy characters
Post by: stone-cold-lead on September 04, 2016, 12:02:44 PM
As the title says, it's random stuff here. I thought this batch of models was going to be all Otherworld stuff (like previous batches for this commission) but when I started digging through the models they turned out to be a mix of different things. Nice change really.

First we've got an old Citadel dwarf. Love the 80's dwarves and loved painting this one.

Sticking with GW there's a much later Empire Warrior Priest.

The one Otherworld model from this bunch. I've painted a number of variants of this figure and have lost track of how many now.

A Dark Sword Miniatures assassin. Thankfully the integral base had been clipped off already but I did need to fix the feet up a little. A lot of the DS stuff seems rather dated to me (it did way back when the first models were released) but maybe they intended on that retro US style.

A character called Lini which appears to be some sort of comic book character. By Reaper for Pathfinder.

Finally an Arabian dancer from Brother Vinni but I'm not sure what the rules are here when it comes to nudity so if you want to see balloon tits and nipples like saucers click on my Facebook or blog links in my sig (or click on my website and dig around for it if it's a slow day).

Lovely work, you even managed to make that dancer look halfway reasonable (assuming fakey breast implants were a thing in whatever setting she's supposed to be from).  That's quite an accomplishment, usually have to go with White or Klocke for well-sculpted nudes.

Lini's not so much a comic character as a (fairly accurate) sculpt based directly on the concept art for that particular "iconic" representation of a Pathfinder gnome druid.  The artist (who's done a lot of Pathfinder work) is overfond of stick-thin figures and implausible anatomy, some of which would make Brother Vinni's nudes look human by comparison.

Surprised you didn't do the snow leopard animal companion she comes with, it's the best part of that figure pack in my opinion.  Far better and less cartoonish design than Lini herself is.

I had a quick look online and noticed it's a two figure set but I was only sent the one figure to paint. I always find it hard to get going when painting animals so no complaints from me.  ;)

Cheers for the comments everyone.  :)

Lini's not so much a comic character as a (fairly accurate) sculpt based directly on the concept art for that particular "iconic" representation of a Pathfinder gnome druid.

It's a Wayne Reynolds (http://66.media.tumblr.com/9167afcfd3aba0a2cfc75b6c424274a1/tumblr_nao4s0J3ky1r2344uo5_1280.jpg) character (which I didn't know beforehand, but the style of the mini shouts it from the rooftops) so it's the next best thing. ;D

Oooh... puttin' Wayne below Vinni. Them's fightin' words. I've been a fan of his since I read the old Kal Jerico and Redeemer comics from GW.

But since you could probably take me, I'll just say: does it help that a lot of them are elves? lol I don't think the other characters (http://lawfulgoodness.tumblr.com/post/98806461647/dtk-womenwarriors-art-by-wayne-reynolds-part) on that page are too bad.

But back to the topic at hand: ridiculously good painting, SCL. Your palettes work very well, with themselves and with the characters, and the blending is smoother than a sandpapered Barry White. Brilliant.

That Seoni fig would make a nice base for a superhero conversion.  Very interesting stance, and an excellent paint job.

As for Wayne Reynolds (oh right, the guy from Kal and the Redeemer, I knew I'd seen his work before Pathfinder) his human stuff is generally fine in my eyes.  It's actually the elf (and gnome) ones that I don't care for.  Slender and willowy is one thing, but he takes it too far and winds up with something rather alien and cartoony rather than elegantly fey.
