Title: The Scruntian Slavers (my ongoing Post Apocalyptic project)
Post by: Dr. The Viking on February 01, 2009, 09:41:39 PM
I'm working away on stuff to use in "post apocalyptic whatever". I've settled on a "scruntian" slave train with Texas Scrunts from Bob Olley. They basicly raid places for slaves, sell them off or let them work their oil pumps.

All of this is still WIP and well... will hopefully cease to be at some point!

A scrunt, his trusty chain shotgun and a wasteland hero of some sort

One of the slavers and an enslaved beefmutant
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/clovermilk/post%20apocalypse/pokka013.jpg)
Mutated pigs are common in the post apocalyptic world. Mutated bacon is to the future citizens what russian caviar is to us today (that is expensive and odd..).
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/clovermilk/post%20apocalypse/pokka015.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/clovermilk/post%20apocalypse/pokka019.jpg)
The idea behind this robot is a "vault helpbot" - I figure some welding and lifting operatiosn could be handled by this beast.
These are 4 more savages in the making. Yup - toothpick wielding maniacs! Watchout! Kaching! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/clovermilk/post%20apocalypse/pokka030.jpg)
This biker is obviously going to be called pinhead. I chose the small head quite deliberately. It's my sense of humour I think.(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/clovermilk/post%20apocalypse/pokka026.jpg)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/clovermilk/dec023.jpg)My favorite monster so far! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/clovermilk/post%20apocalypse/scrunts/33f51709.jpg)Some of the more finished scrunts.. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/clovermilk/post%20apocalypse/c0f48106.jpg)
As you can probably see I'm not too consistent in the quality of the paintjobs. I tend to slob it on plastics and use more energy on the models I like... I wind up with a selection of really differently painted models but hey - I had fun in the process. And please mind you that it's still all WIP.

I've been as lucky as to get a big of miscast stuff from Ramshackle really cheap too. I think it's really brilliant stuff! I've been toying away at combinations with the parts I've bought and so far I've come up with some utter basics of my slave train. There'll be two of the "carts" shown here and they'll be for living quarters. On top they'll have a RCW style turret I think. The sides will feautare boiler plate and gun/lookout holes.

This small buggy I just couldn't resist. It'll have a front mounted MG. I think it should be fast and good for racing down savages and pacifying them until the other scrunts can get their asses to them.

My oldest son wrecked his monstertruck and I have now inherited it... I am not really sure what I wanna turn it into yet. But I'm leaning toward "opentopped with two crew and a frontgun... and prison cabin in back". It just needs and lot of work and it'll be a happy ending.

Feel free to enlighten me!

PS: Yes I've moved all my crap from the workbench to here... It's not like I'm doing much else than Sci-fi rigth now anyways!

Nice bunch of trash you have assembled there. Not sure about the monster buggy, but that land train looks intriguing. Looking forward to the finished article.

Hey really nice stuff Thor! The land train is shaping up.

I must just say though that alot of the stuff shown is from abig box of misscsts I sent out, so dont take all the bubbles as standard quality!

Very nice! I really like the simple conversion of the usually quite lame plastic Combat Zone ganger. I love the scrunt with the chaingun and the traffic sign shield too (great idea, might steal it ;)).

I love the wheels of the monster truck too, though I think a closed top would look a tad cooler 8)

Argh! I'm sorry - I obviously should have stated that!  o_o

In fact considering the "miscasts" I should say that ramshackle has quite a high mark for quality! I have certainly recieved resin as poor as the miscasts...but bought as "new stuff" before!

Hmm.. I can't in all honesty take credit for that idea.. it's quite "universal P.A." I think. I'll be adding more though.. to the brink of sillyness even.   ::)

Hmm... it would be kewl with a big MG (think middle east insurgent style) on the back... and well! More stuff!

Did you ever tell where your "favorite monster" came from?  Looks like a plastic injection-molded toy of some sort.  It is very cool, how does it scale next to the figures?

No the prize is still up for grabs for the first one to guess!   ;)

I'll take in action pictures of it so you can see.

It's one of those jumping things isn't it? You lick the plastic base to stick it and push the monster down on the spring and wait for it to jump, can't remember what thay are called.

Nice work so far. 8)

these are my budget savages... almost all games workshop parts with added toothpicks as spears.

The tribe paint their spears white so that in time blood will discolour them and the more discoloured spear the braver the warrior.

I'll admit to be slacking alot on these... I just need them "tabletop" for the weekend.

In other news we've got the Nagiyate Arctic Explorer... of course no one knows that in the post apocalypse and the scrunts utilise the vehicle for scounting ahead in front of their slave train and into radioactive areas (as it's protected against such horrors - smart japanese guys!).

There's a long way to go on this still, and I'm hoping for a really worn and weathered look. I¨ll be adding rust and other stuff later...
Instead of my usual white undercoat, with loads of washes and pigments I dotted on the white with a spongebrush. I hope this will save me some time in the end... hehe

lastly another shield is getting ready to do service... GW goblin shield with waterslide.. I figured that the savages wouldn't hesitate to reinforce the roadsign with a steelrim so I left it on.

Oh and since nobody has guessed where the blob-monster came from I guess it's time to reveal:

Well... it is.. dam dam daaaa: A 1991 plastic toy from the company Galoob.
It was part of a series called "The Trash Bunch" in which you bought your toy in a bag (without knowing which yo got - sound familiar?). You'd then run home and put the bag in water and watch it dissolve and when it was completely dissolved and the water was all green the monster/hero would float to the top.

Being really 90ish the idea behind the whole thing was the the "trashors" and the "disposers" were fighting the eco-fight against each other... right!

Looks cool, especially the little car thingy, it seems that Ramshackle is giving us unlimited possibilities... It reminds me a bit of "Rullemarie", the danish anti bomb squad robot thing, but the paintjob is not really SWAT material I guess...

The japanese paint job works really well on this, somehow makes it look more realistic. Good work.

Hmmm!

Apparently the solvent I use for my decals does not like P3 paint... it softens it up and does all kinds of bad stuff to it!

I wish I could call myself yesterday and tell me that... but even more I hope that the Nagiyate Arctic Explorer can be saved.

@Curtis:

Great that you like the look. Mind you that it's a long way from done yet. I really wanted to give my wasteland stuff a feel of "leftover warmaterial" and I figured that using aircraft decals would help the idea along.
I have no idea what the symbols say. I don't mind though.

@Jonas:

Yeah the ramshackle stuff is rather excellent for our purpose. I'm only waiting on some bob olleys scrunt tank commanders to finish the train and get it rolling.

Haha. Rullemarie! Let's hold that thought:

I must save up and get some of those Scrunts, though.

I had an outing with the Random Encounter guys and some of my new stuff saw action:

New buildings, fences and general terrain...
In our first outing a bunch of savages led by Jonas assaulted "Mother McCready's Pig Farm" to get some food. Mother and Father tried hard to resist the savages, but in the end father skull was cracked and Mother squashed a savage and the rest fled.
Mother and father were aided by their children (my savages).
Mother is about to enter a house and one of her children is eagerly awaiting the outcome on top of the shack.
Children line up with white spears to fight off the oncoming savages

We used Torbens Wasteland Chronicles rules and it seemed to work ok in this game, although the hand-to-hand was rather everlasting due to mainly dismal dice rolling.

In our second game the savages tried ambushing a Water Merchant convoy. Yesterdays mission for food hadn't been a succes so now water was tried.

The good old "tree trunk over the road" trick.

The water merchants find that things are not entirely as they should be.

A savage jump from his cover and grabs one of the merchant mercenary guards and pulls him to the ground.
Unfortunately for the savage, the rules of HTH-combat have changed since the last game, so he now get's shot and killed before hitting in hand-to-hand. Poor sod.

The savages have awaken their avatar "Helpbot 5" to come and fight with them. Their leader is only vaguely aware of what makes the bot do anything, so each time the savages want to move the robot they roll a check to see whether they or the opposition controls the robot.

They manage to make the robot rip out the controls of truck 1.

Soon the convoy is completely enveloped in savages and bodies are strewn all over the place. Two water merchants have been taken hostage.

The game proved that much work was still to be done to the car-part of the rules, but I think the guys had fun.

My role in both games were to set up terrain, provide some of the figures and the story.

The guys also found time to play the odd electrocution game

I think it's getting closer to the mark.. I need to do more to the wind shield though. I painted it black and "dusted" it. But I don't think the illusion works. I didn't want to do it "gem-like" as you see on a lot of eldar stuff with big dropformed elements in glass/transparent material.
But I'm not so sure WHAT to do with it now...

We had lot of fun with these games.

Every time we play a game of Wasteland Chronicles it is also playtesting, so not everything is the same each time, sometimes we improve the game and sometimes not.

I really like that we actually can change in the rules if we think something does not work so well, so in the end I think Torben will have a really great game to present.

I always give it a coat of gloss (or two), for me it works well enough and makes the black look a bit darker, even if you want it dusty:

The things are:

Decorative items for my land train/scrunt vehicles/buildings

And lastly a hatch also for the train.

Haha!

Thanks!

I guess I better get around to do something about this at some point again.

I've actually bought some reinforcements for the slavers... Olley stopped doing the Texan scrunts and sold them off to somebody who - apparantly - is not in a hurry to put them on the market again. So I settled for some normal scrunts that I'm painting rather rag tag to form a militia of sorts.

I imagine the slavers them selves will pay others to do their fighting.

Hello,

I was wondering if this was a scratch build vehicle or not? I had a look on the ramshackle website and didn’t event see bits that I thought were similar, let alone the vehicle itself.

Nice work and a great idea, I have been enjoying watching progress for a wee while now, anything else not yet posted?

Thanks
