Title: My Dark Ages Stuff.....New Viking unit...Updated 6/28
Post by: Madhouse Workshop on September 09, 2016, 04:05:28 AM
I'm sure there is a bunch of you that have seen my stuff on my blog, but if not here we go.....
I've really been enjoying reading Saxon and Viking history and historical fiction for the last few years, so I was really quite happy putting these together. There are many subtle conversions, especially of the plastics.  I've had my Viking army done for quite sometime, but I'm now in the process of painting more Vikings and my Saxon army as well.

The next few posts are all of the old stuff.
(http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd38/bioniccheesehead/001_zpsqwsdvome.jpg) (http://s225.photobucket.com/user/bioniccheesehead/media/001_zpsqwsdvome.jpg.html)
The hersir unit is set up for WAB with the beserker being the second guy from the left above.  The Jarl being the third guy in.  The berserker is a converted Warlord Games barbarian.
(http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd38/bioniccheesehead/005%20800w_zpsq3npdjvv.jpg) (http://s225.photobucket.com/user/bioniccheesehead/media/005%20800w_zpsq3npdjvv.jpg.html)
Another closer shot of the front rank.  Another berserker alongside a dane axe wielder.  The two models on the right are both conversions of Warlord Games barbarians with Gripping Beast plastic viking heads and shields.  I think they make good vikings.
(http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd38/bioniccheesehead/006%20800%20pixel_zpscngwn8oo.jpg) (http://s225.photobucket.com/user/bioniccheesehead/media/006%20800%20pixel_zpscngwn8oo.jpg.html)
The other thing I tried to do with this army is make all of the movement trays sort of tell a story, instead of being an eyesore geometric shape or hunk of metal or plastic. Views from the rear, the rear most ranks are painted to same detail as the characters and front rank.  On the shields I managed to combine Little Big Men Studios transfers with my own hand-painted shields as a time saver.  The other thing the LBMS transfers did was inspire me to put in much more detail, such as weathering and battle damage.

As I mentioned there are a whole slew of subtle conversions going on, the photos below show some of that.  I also like multibasing, I typically will do the front ranks and characters/commands on individual bases.  The second rank usually is where I will multi-base quite a bit.  The third rank will be a mix.  This is the fourth unit of Hirdman along with its movement tray and the casaulties that I then made a mold of them to vary the poses.  This unit I wanted to do some modeling that gave them more of a shieldwall appearance.  The pic below shows the one model that I converted crouching down a bit, with a normal model, and then one with a shield over the face.  I also added one of my cast dead in the midst of the unit.
I converted a couple of the shieldwall models crouching and banging their shields.  The one with the shield over his head is a converted Wargames Factory viking, but most of the models are Gripping Beasts.
Good shot of the crouching model and the spear over the top of him. Also a shot of the backs of the units.  I added quite a bit of hair, similar to some of the metal GB models.  Relatively easy conversions.

I'll add the shields later after painting them and the models separately.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
A slightly exaggerated example of my painted shields, an idea that I blatantly stole from my good buddy Mike Butcher, these are my shieldwall or Skjaldborg markers for my Vikings in the WAB format.

It was also a good way to practice painting shields, again I was looking to match my rank & file that have some with the Little Big Men transfers.  Based much like my army.

More Vikings ready to pillage....Pics of Unit #2.  Much like the first unit, this another big unit of Hersirs. Similar to the other unit, I made up a movement tray with a bunch of eye candy to show off the unit. This included various bits of armor, weapons, shields, bodies.

The second guy from the right with the dane axe is a converted War Factory Games model.

Cape on the one guy in the back rank is from the Fire Forge knight models.

With these Vikings, I wanted to step up my game a bit on the basing.  Really liked using the various flowering weeds, grasses and tufts.

Yea that Gripping Beast berserker is really looking old, its a rough casting that I've since replaced with a different model.

Onward, the third unit of Hersirs and Jarl.  Pretty much the same thing going on here as with the other units.  Lots of candy and gripping Beast goodness.  The two berserkers are the old casts, and are showing their age, I did a bit of smoothing and updating on them, and I already have models to replace them.   Despite those, there are quite a few of my favorite figures in this unit.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v449/PsychosisPC/Ancients/Vikings/001_zpseqg7es70.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/PsychosisPC/media/Ancients/Vikings/001_zpseqg7es70.jpg.html)
I really like the main character below, the hornblower next to him is a cool figure also.  The standard bearer turned out pretty cool, one of the plastic models converted up with a banner left over from the Fire Forge knights.

More pics of the back ranks.  These are painted to the same quality as the front.  I'll eventually shoot some pics of them, as they are pretty cool in their own right.

I really dig the GB plastics.  They are very nicely detailed models with a lot of variety and are really easy to convert as well.

Wow, really great stuff, those units look FANTASTIC! I particularly like the shields, I've been using the LBMS shield transfers myself and like you, have found they have upped my game when it comes to freehanding shields, adding in damage and weathering instead of the pristine designs I've used in the past.

Seriously good work on the conversions, subtle and extremely well executed. It makes my own stuff look rough by comparison!

Thanks for the kind words.  As I stated previously, I've had these done for quite sometime.  I'm in the process of adding a bunch of stuff to them and also to crossover into the Saxon side as well.  Much of that is on my paint desk currently which I often give peaks at the blog.  There will be other conversions and I obtained a bunch of minis from Foundry and also from Saxon Miniatures.  So there is much more to come along with a huge Viking Longship project and some terrain as well.

Anyways this is the 4th unit of Hirdmen that I have finished.

Some cracking shield walls! I like the little vignettes you've made on the bases and the painting is nicely colourful, yet still down and dirty - proper dark ages stuff!!

Thanks for the kind words guys.

These are some of my latest SAGA Gripping Beast plastic models.  This one is a conversion that I did.

I had placed an order a long time ago from Saxon Miniatures and Colin sent me some samples of the Arthurians.  Now, I'm not really into Arthurians, and I have yet to get around to painting the viking warlords that I had ordered, but I did get around to painting the Arthurians.  They are nice miniatures, casts are not too bad for metal, and require the normal filing and smoothing.  The poses are nice and dynamic.  The only real complaint I have are the size of the helmeted heads, but I could live with that if I was in to Arthurians.  The heads on the viking warlords (with the exception of one particular model) are smaller that the Arthurians.  Nonetheless cool miniatures and I look forward to doing more with Saxon Miniatures.

I've finally started on my Saxons...and a few other things and some more Vikings.  These are the WIP shots of what's on my desk currently...making some progress.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v449/PsychosisPC/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_0126_zps5ehmefx5.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/PsychosisPC/media/Work%20In%20Progress/IMG_0126_zps5ehmefx5.jpg.html)

Also getting some skirmishers done with these slingers, as well as Viking with a dog.

And the first of the Collin Patten Saxon Miniatures Viking Warlord getting some paint while painting Saxons....

Also trying a few different techniques with some of the Secret Weapon's washes.  So far I kind of like some of them.

I have no plans to keep these 3 old Vikings.  As I'm getting back in to the swing of things, still struggling a little bit with my left eye due to the facial nerve damage from that damn brain tumor that I had removed, I do feel like I'm beginning to get my flow back on painting.  So I finished painting these up for testing the eye some more and messing around with a few different paints.  I did these up just prior to the big batch of Saxons on the WIP desk.  I think they turned out alright.

The castings are showing their age most certainly.

Unfortunately, full recovery is not going to happen, this is as about as good as its ever going to get, and likely will only get worse.  I was lucky in that the tumor was benign.  Unlucky that I've permanently lost my hearing in the left ear, the balance nerves on the left side, along with the facial nerve issues that cause a lot of little problems, and I still have a small portion of the tumor sitting on the facial nerve cluster right next to the brain stem.  Typically this type of tumor is slow growing and so far shows no sign of regrowth.  So my hope is some genius comes up with a new treatment that one day does not involve radiation next to my brain stem.  In the mean time live everyday like its your last.  I cannot ride a bicycle yet without tipping over, but I can and have gotten back in my racing go-karts.  There's a couple tracks that play heck with my balance and give me slight vertigo like symptoms, but I just fight through it and keep going.

I'm not sure who manufactured this miniature, maybe someone here knows.  I have had in a bin for several years and finally decided to sitdown and paint this model.  The metal took a ton of prep work, pretty rough casting to deal with.  I left some of that roughness in the cape, normally I would fix that, but I thought it looked like a neat little tattered effect.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v449/PsychosisPC/Ancients/Saxons/DSC_0245_zpsijb6rs3a.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/PsychosisPC/media/Ancients/Saxons/DSC_0245_zpsijb6rs3a.jpg.html)

As rough as the casting was, I kind of like the dynamic of the pose and I think my paint scheme, simple, was effective.

Great looking unit.

I see 'Mad Eric' is up to his tricks again. Honestly you can't take him anywhere. Two shandies and he always strips off his shirt and goes berserk. So embarrassing.

Another Saxon Warlord.  I have no idea who made this figure.  I tried to make it look good, but believe there is not much I can do to make it look good.  I was not really feeling this model.

Another Saxon, this time Gripping Beast's version of Alfred.  After spending some time painting this miniature, if I ever work on another, I need to convert it, its not an ultra cool miniature.  I think they missed the boat on the sculpt.

I have this mini as well. I converted mine to be Uhtred of Bebbanburg though. The sculpt towers over the plastics I have used for the majority of my warriors and it seems a little plain to be the King of Wessex, but fits perfectly as the mighty warlord Uhtred IMO.

I love the paint job you've given yours, the red cloak in particular is very nice :)

I had to go look for that conversion.  Good job love it.  That is kind of on the order of what I was thinking, off with his head.  I think the head is the most disappointing portion of this sculpt.

This mini I'm planning to sell and will replace with Saxon Miniatures King Alfred, much more royal looking sculpt.

Well, every one has different things that they like aircav.   :)

This is another mini that I just finished.  I truly love this sculpt by Tre Manor at Red Box Games.  Its super dynamic, its Mad Angus.  I just wish its scale would fit better with everything else that I'm painting for my Dark Ages stuff, but the head is tiny in comparison.  All that said its good fun to paint.  There are a couple more photos of of it on my blog and facebook page.

Hmmm.....I think I know what you are referring to. Never gave that a thought as they are not the right colors to me and something that I have seen in Viking historical references.  Those are two of Battle Flag transfers.  I can probably easily paint those into quarters or something.

I don't think you need to change them, just avoid showing them (or 'cover' them in an image editor).

I do not doubt that Vikings used the swastika, as it was used all over Europe and Asia down through history, it's just that German law is very strict about symbols used by the nazi regime and organizations (and likenesses thereof). Perhaps ask the moderator before doing anything?

Bwah....just went ahead and covered them.  If anyone is wondering what we are talking about you can see it on the Battle Flag viking transfers.  I should be able to paint match the green and white and modify them.

See how you've got a little bit of ballooning around the bosses on some of the LBMS decals? If you cut a series of little spokes into the transfer around the boss hole you can minimise that, and if you put some blu-tak (or similar product) into some cling wrap and then use that to press firmly onto the newly applied decal then you'll practically rliminate the ballooning problem altogether. The blu-tak/cling wrap step also helps to seat the decals against any raised shield rims :)

That's partly why I like to photo things, I'm not using any magnification while painting.  Photos definitely magnify things.  These are not competition pieces so I'm not overly concerned with them, just my tabletop play pieces.

Actually the Battle Flag transfers are the worse offenders of this than the Little Big Men transfers.  The Battle Flag are traditional waterslide transfers and not sticky back...err....or is it front....err.....well sticky sided.  The LBMS even if not lined up completely right will still stick to the boss.

I don't work with waterslides often, so I don't bother with decal set and other such stuff, I just use matte varnish on the shield and then overtop of the transfer.

Post by: Gracchus Armisurplus on February 07, 2017, 09:47:06 PM
Ah, I haven't used the battleflag miniatures myself but have used a lot of waterslides in the past and always use microsol/microset to get them to 'melt' into the detail of the model. The LBMS decals are unresponsive to the microsol so take a bit more prep effort to get right in my experience.

Thanks Hitman....as to painting yours, I'll pass, I have too many to paint already with like 3-4 armies already built.   :'(  So many miniatures so little time, my eyes are bigger than my ability...

But I am having fun with it.

The miniatures are going to start coming a bit faster with more Vikings, terrain that is shown on my blog, and the beginnings of the Saxons.  Once I get the batch that is on my paint desk done, I'm going to take a break on this period and jump back to my Roman Legions.  Having sold a bunch of that army off, I'm rebuilding it.  Then I might do some of the Flames of War stuff that I have primed and ready to go.

Much of what you are seeing here has even more photos on my blog and my Facebook pages where you can find links to in my signature.

This is a fun piece.  The miniatures of the Jarl and his downed opponent are Old Glory miniatures.  The dynamic Viking protecting him while he is doing his business is a Warlord Games Gaul.

Well done!

I am painting an entire SAGA Viking warband using those and the plastic Hirdmen at the moment, so I like to see others' take on them. I am thinking of also making a point of levy from the DA Warriors, using bows from the Conquest plastic archer set, as I like my levy to be unarmoured.

Did you move the cap from another head, or add beard on the guy in hte front row?

Thanks guys.

I actually like the Conquest Games archers and they will be my Viking archers with some bits added from the GBP Vikings.  There are a couple of sneak peaks of that unit on my blog right now.

The guy in the front row, I actually sculpted a beard on him, but now that you mention it, it would be easier to just to remove the cap and add it to head or just sculpt a new cap.

They work, I used one of them for my Blood Eagle warband, but I just feel they are too well equipped for the rabble that is levy in SAGA, that's why I want to kitbash some 'light' archers.  :)

The actual Conquest archers will probably get used for other projects, some of them, no doubt, getting added to the aforementioned Blood Eagle warband.

Its primarily the lighting and camera making them more shiney.  In person only the metals and blood sparkle.  I am purposely using a lot more color, as I often trap myself with very dark schemes that in poorly lit halls that we play in, make for very hard to see details.  My 2008 Chicago GT best appearance army, while being painted in Khorne reds, is very dark and its hard to make out all the detail in certain lighting and from a distance.  All of this, while not being painted to that level, could easily suffer much the same.

Archers are next....and I'm painting and building even more.

An updated unit of archers with new additions.  The second unit is coming to reinforce this unit.  The reinforcements to the metal GB minis are Conquest Games archers with bits to make them more viking/dark age like.

Ignore the movement tray that is just photo prop for the unit, and will be used for the bigger infantry unit.

Thanks.

The second unit of archers.  I think these turned out pretty nice, I'm happy with the looks of them.  Ignore the movement tray that's just a prop to make them easier to photo.

The kit has plenty of bits to make them more dark age looking.

I just spent a bit of time looking through the whole thread.  You've done some really amazing paint jobs!  A really inspiring painting thread.   ;)

My newest Viking unit.  This is a miss-mash of manufacturers, don't worry there are more in black primer, waiting for attention.  There are Gripping Beast Plastics, converted Warlord Barbarians, Saxon Miniatures, Foundry, Wargames Factory....

Thanks guys.  Appreciate the comments.  There are even more photos of this unit on my blog.  Along with a whole lot of photos of the individual models.  Definitely not done yet.  I have a pile of bondi, Foundry and Saxon Miniature models to paint yet, along with their counterparts a Anglo-Saxon horde.

Part of that is my lighting setup, no diffusion setup, just some cheap lightbulbs.  The other part is I'm experimenting a bit with some other paints and clears.  In person, these are little more towards a satin like matte finish than a dead flat matte finish.  In the halls that we play war games in, the lighting is typically so dark, no one will ever know when standing 3 feet from them.
