Title: JoeRugby - Hobby Shenanigans - “True” Scale vs Primaris
Post by: JoeRugby on September 10, 2016, 09:06:27 AM
JoeRugby - Hobby Shenanigans

Welcome

Thanks for checking out my thread.

This is the Sister thread to my “showcase” thread the “A Diary of an inquisitor” which you can find here…

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=93267.0

While there will be items on here from a variety of sci-fi manufactures, all are tied into the same head cannon that ill go into more detail in the showcase thread.

I like to have all my ski fi collection cross over into my 40k head cannon
e.g the Mantic warpath verse is a number of sectors south of the Segmentum Tempestus and west of the ultima segmentum founded by rouge traders.
There are Remnant fleets of Xenos (and sometimes human races) that were evicted from their planets by the Imperium during the great crusade.
Predators are still hunting anything they can, they love Catachan and hunting space marines.
Every now and again a strange man in a blue box shows up goes “nope” and leaves again.

Here will have Work in progress images and some discussion on any rules I’m working on to incorporate the various minis into other game systems so they can cross over. (I should have a Deadzone - Xenomorph ruleset done at some point).

I find i’m more productive/focused when i do a thread like this.

Hobby Budget
Hobby budget of max £100 per month but ideally less than £50, As an incentive to spend as little as possible I'm going to put anything under £50 I spend into a piggy bank and save up for a Warhound Titan. (Wanted one for ages)

I'm also going to try and fund a bit of my hobby through EBay and here (selling terrain if people will buy it and things I'm not going to use), if eBay income makes up any of the £50 target spend I'll count it as half towards the budget total. (Another incentive to selling stuff) e.g. if i spend 50 but all came from money i made from selling stuff on eBay i’ll only count as £25 towards the £50 target.

But thats a lot of Reading heres some pics of things I am working on…

Albion Rifles imperial guard

UK (mostly WW2) inspired imperial Guard.

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_2345.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_2345.jpg.html)

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_2347.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_2347.jpg.html)

Got quite a few tanks to finish but I'm waiting on an airbrush purchase (got the cash saved just need to get one) before i do it.

Deadzone Enforcers
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_2369.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_2369.jpg.html)

I-pad armour on the standard enforcers with the special characters in colourful armour (like spartans in Halo)

Deadzone rebs
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_2351.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_2351.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_2295.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_2295.jpg.html)

Tried to get them looking as individual as possible, so their a rag tag group. (think serenity and star wars rebels)

Xenomorphs
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_2075.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_2075.jpg.html)(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_2062.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_2062.jpg.html)

This is all the Xenos i have, despite the poor effort by Prodos with the treatment of me as a backer the minis are fantastic.

Infinity PanO
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_2584.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_2584.jpg.html)

Ultramarines

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_2356.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_2356.jpg.html)

lots to do and add, for a start i need to finish my hellion conversion nd get another sniper scout made.

Their true scale btw (or close enough to make me happy anyway)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_2359.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_2359.jpg.html)

Thanks again for checking my thread out.

Please drop a comment if you like what you see or have any feedback, I really appreciate it and it helps keep be motivated.

Nice work dude ! That's an impressively diverse menagerie. I like your policy on sci fi that fits into/works with 40K.

That's a lot of goodness there. Especially like how the Pan O knight looks all in metal armour.

thanks both :)

MDF stairs

In the above hobby haul i picked up these MDF kits.

(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/9/10/826175_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/826175-.html)

I really like them but they are designed to be built for Necromunda style scenery so theres no top shelf (to allow you to slide the cardboard/MDF floors in)

(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/9/10/826176_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/826176-.html)

As a solution I made a step using some spare stairs and MDF “sprue”

(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/9/10/826178_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/826178-.html)

Much better

(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/9/10/826174_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/826174-.html)

And here it is painted and ready for a game of deadzone this evening.

(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/9/10/826181_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/826181-.html)

Blainetober
Found my Blaines for “Blaintober”
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/9/10/826177_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/826177-.html)

Thought i had a Blaine from deadzone too but i don't will try to pick one up on eBay before October

Thanks for Looking :)

Really great stuff and quite diverse. A couple of quesitons.

1) Where are the stairs from?  I' generally not a fan of lasercut mdf, but for stairs, they're ace!

2) What figs did you use for the IG Stormtroopers.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Ellif :)

Stairs are from image depot on eBay

and the Stormtroopers are from Anvil industry's afterlife range the republic commandos

Well September and October have been a hobby fail (real life has just been silly busy and i haven't even gone back to rugby yet)

Got only two minis and 2 sets of stairs finished in September

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3147.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3147.jpg.html)

Showed the yellow stairs before, green are similar but with green bits instead of yellow.

Mars attacks Heroes

Not happy with the eyes on either of them, details were pretty soft on these minis and ill be honest lost patience with the faces.

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3151.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3151.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3126.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3126.jpg.html)

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3158.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3158.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3134.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3134.jpg.html)

and nothing finished in October :(

years total is up to 86 minis finished, want to get to at least 100 done this year.

Hobby Spend

September was pretty good only spent £30 so £20 into the Titan fund.

bringing the total to £60…….

October the whole of the max budget was spent on the star saga kickstarter

And this months max hobby budget has been spent on the battle systems kickstarter already so ill likely go over budget this month :(

BLAINE

Enjoyed painting this guy cause he's Blaine :)

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3144.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3144.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3142.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3142.jpg.html)

Hoping to have my other blaine’s finished shortly. well hoping to actually get some decent time painting and lobbying but finishing the blaine is top priority.

Mars Attacks Blaine

Probably one of the best detailed minis to come out of the mars Attacks kickstarter.

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3187.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3187.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3186.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3186.jpg.html)

happy with how he came out.

Deadzone Jetbike Blaine

This mini benefits from the new PVC used in the last kickstarter.

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3176.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3176.jpg.html)

and he’s pretty bloody nice, nice detail, cool bike and and awesome coat :)

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3161.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3161.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3172.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3172.jpg.html)

put a bit of weathering on it as Blaine docent strike me as the type of person to keep his kit in pristine condition (just look at his coat)

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3169.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3169.jpg.html)

Very, very happy with how this came out. been quite subtle (for me at any rate) with the highlights and resisted the urge to make the bike goo busy with freehand.

Thanks for looking

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3224.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3224.jpg.html)

November spend
Um....well....yeah....

Went massively over budget.
Battlesystems kickstarter
The raging Heroes necropriestess
Dreamforge - Eisenkern accessory set
GW - Eldrad
GW - Death jester
GW- Harlequins
Chieftain green spray paint

So yeah.....nothing to the Titan fund from November.

Pledging to spend nothing this month so I can put e full £50 into the Titan fund. (Need to photoshop a Titan fund savings graphic)

This week WIP
Nothing finished this week but a few things have moved forward.

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3216.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3216.jpg.html)

Colony 87 Astropath

Finished another Colony 87 mini, that leaves 2 to have the second set finished off and puts me at 90 minis finished this year.

Space Dwarves from Space!!!

Minis #91-95 finished this year

Mantic Games - Forge father Steel Warriors

I've said before but i really like these minis even with the flaws in the torsos.

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3405.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3405.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3409.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3409.jpg.html)

The blue shoulder pad is a throwback to the old official Forge father paint scheme and eventually i might get some dwarf decals on there as a army badge etc.

Close up on the auto-gunner and leader

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3414.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3414.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3416.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3416.jpg.html)

Size comparison to an imperial guard mini
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3425.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3425.jpg.html)

got 20 more from the deadzone infestation kickstarter to paint up, but ill wait till I've looked into the warpath firefight rules before building and painting the rest.

Was thinking of painting up some steel warriors specifically for use with the Brokkrs in Deadzone but give them slayer style heads, any of you guys able to pint me in the direction of some dwarf heads with mohawks etc?

Minis 96-99 of 2016

100 minis painted just in time too :) first time I've ever painted this many in a year so I'm very happy with myself.

Heres pics of 96-99, i just cant seem to take a decent pic of number 100 at the moment to ill get that up later.

96 - Martian Flag dude
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3457.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3457.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3455.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3455.jpg.html)

I did what i could but theres not a lot of detail on the mini so i didn't spend much time on it.

97 - Mars Attacks Crashed Car #3
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3449.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3449.jpg.html)

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3445.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3445.jpg.html)

I cant take a decent pic of it but I've put gloss varnish into the sink so it looks like theres still water in it.

98 - Enforcer Peacekeeper

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3462.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3462.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3464.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3464.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3459.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3459.jpg.html)

First of his squad that I’ll finish in January

Same iPad armour as my other enforcers. Given his action pose i had to add battle damage including glowing heat marks(most of the weapons seem to be laser weapons in warpath) on the shield.

99 - Imperial Guard Tech Priest Enginseer
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3468.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3468.jpg.html)
(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3470.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3470.jpg.html)

Really happy with my work on the red cloak, the eye looks better in real life promise :)

Is there nothing that you can't do? You make great terrain; paint different ranges of minis in a awesome way (I'm particularly impressed by the different Blaines you painted) and you even saved some money for a FW Titan! Keep up the good work in 2017  ;)

“True” Scale Deathwatch Chaplain Cassius

Mini #100 of 2016 and my favourite to paint to boot. (the Reb Strider a close second)

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3499.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3499.jpg.html)

Really happy with how he turned out (the face isn't as severe in real life)

And as always a scale pic to show he's a tiny bit bigger, than the normal size humans in my collection.

And how do you do your true scale marines? Terminator legs and lots of green stuff?

Plasticard spacers and greenstuff "classic true scaling".

Not a fan of the Termi leg option as it costs more and I can't get as good an end result.

Ideally I want the marines to look like they haven't been made bigger until you put them next to other minis. If that makes sense.... ;D

Wow, and I thought that the other method was hard. Another thing that shows your talent, lol. I think I'll just get a couple of marines from Fallen Frontiers since they are bigger than the usual heroic 28mm that GW sells.

Awesome work with the true scaling!  :-*

I have done few with the simpler method, and that's enough hassle for me :)

Btw, who makes the mdf staircases seen on the previous page?

Titan Fund

2017 starts with the titan fund sitting at £180 (no hobby spend last month and put some crimbo money in there too)

Has the price has gone up on the warhound? a complete one is now £364

2017 hobby spend goals
hobby spend goals stay the same but this month I've failed it completely, damn you triumvirate of the imperium!!!!!

2017 hobby goals

Paint 10 minis per month
Make one “True” Scale Space Marine Per month and paint it the following month (their son much effort :) )
Make once piece of scenery for myself every other month
Paint up my start collecting Skitarii force by the end of April.

So far in 2017

I've started a new thread following my progress on completing an ad mech/skitarii force.

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=97101.0

Done a lot of basing

(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2017/1/15/850452_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/850452-.html)

Done a lot of undercoating

(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2017/1/15/850451_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/850451-.html)

True Scaling Deathwatch Overkill
Started to plan how I'm going to true scale my next Deathwatch overkill Marine.

(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2017/1/15/850453_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/850453-.html)

Went with the Blood angel as he was he next one on the instructions booklet :)

Because of the pose i’m going to cheat on this one he's only going to have spacers in the shin and abdomen, and I'm going to have a piece of brass rod to have him look like not touching the pipe.

Peacekeeper enforcers

(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2017/1/15/850403_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/850403-.html)
Added some more paint, probably going to do more on the one i previously finished as the armour is a bit flat.

This week
I'm going to hopefully:

Finish 2 test skitarii on my mech thread
Finish a test Veer’myn
Add magnets to the door on the enforcer interceptor i got from the kickstarter (cause the door wont stay shut :( )
Repaint Cassius Face it doesn't look right

thanks for looking :)

Test Veer-myn Painted

Wanted the keep some of the yellow from the official scheme but not have loads of it.
As the Veer-myn steal and scavenge a lot of stuff i wanted that to show. So I went with brass and steel patches for the armour but weathered and dirty.
ill do the rest of the nest in different varieties of this scheme changing which bits are Yellow, Iron and Brass.

(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc508/NateRugby/IMG_3597.jpg) (http://s1215.photobucket.com/user/NateRugby/media/IMG_3597.jpg.html)
Was also testing out two different ‘fur schemes’ for his arms, to make it look like there was fur there. I think the patchy one on the left arm is the best.

Invisible martian

ta dude :)

Didn't manage to finish my skitarri, but i should have them done today.

Next week I need to finish off my Enforcers for the tale of painters thread

Speaking of…

Enforcer Peacekeepers
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2017/1/22/851998_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/851998-.html)

Progress has been made :)

but I did
Get carried away by BOW’sRelic Knights week!

(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2017/1/21/851847_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/851847-.html)

Picked up a calico Kate (love the space pirates)

and she lost me £10!!!!!!

Chaos cards look like their getting rid of their current stock.

Decent kit all in all, i like the amount of options but it is still restic. Most of the details are nice and its better than the majority of the Deadzone v1 and seditions wars minis but the face is really soft.

Ill get her painted up soon :)

Can anyone with some relics knights minis measure some normal humans from foot to top of he head.

Pretty please :)

Magnetised Landing ramp
The Enforcer Interceptor ramp has been magnetised
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2017/1/22/851999_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/851999-.html)
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2017/1/22/852000_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/852000-.html)

Nice and easy job :)

The ramp now stays closed. the fit on the other parts should mean that this is the only bit i need to magnates to be able to change it between the two configurations.

And the main event…..

Repainted “True” Scale Deathwatch Cassius

I wasn't happy with the paint job on Cassius Face so i redid Him, ill delete the old pics shortly.

First month of 2017 out of the way and i managed to get 10 minis painted :)

but Fell off the hobby budget wagons massively :(

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2017/2/1/854338_sm-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/854338-.html)

this isn't including the bases I've ordered from waylaid, or the SLA, mantic and battle system kick-starters and added money too in the pledge manager.

re the AVP purchase got it at 60% off from chaos cards, and because it was missing a few bits its prompted promos to send me more of my KS pledge.

Enforcer Peacekeepers

Done and dusted :)

Post by: JoeRugby on June 28, 2017, 05:01:20 PM
Thanks for the kind comments all :)

“True” Scale vs Primaris

DISCLAIMER: Please note the reference to true scale marines is my personal preference and interpretation and not a statement on your marines not being good/correct or a demand that all people must do what I and others have done.
As mentioned in the OP, for me Space marine miniatures need to be at least a taller than normal people (guard, skittari etc) by about a head, the classic “true” scaling method gives me this and makes me happy :).

In short there’s no need to get angry or salty

With that out of the way

WELCOME LADY’S AND GENTLEMEN

The Primaris Marine is 38mm tall the True Scale Marine also 38mm both measurements foot to top of head the True scale seems a bit bigger because of the higher base.

Pretty good match in my opinion and I'm so Happy :)

For me Primaris marines are just what Marines should be in minis size and the rules. (The old rules i used to use for the true scale marines were each single marine counts as 2 and the primaris are really close to this)

Not a fan of the fluff for the Primaris but I can see that there would be a need from GW to not just release the new marines that are taller without any background explanation.

Finally I can now look at a new Marine kit and not immediately start thinking about how i can scale it up.
