Post by: Jeff965 on September 11, 2016, 07:29:26 PM
Painted these for fellow Laffer SJWalker, there's 48 pieces in all including the Gatling phew talk about batch painting lol. There's six packs in the range so let's look at them first.

They are organised into a 24 point force for TMWWBK rules consisting of three units of twelve and a Gatling. With eight spares in Sennet hats.

Naval Brigade are a very versatile force for colonial gaming seeing more action than infantry. I've a couple of dozen of the Perry figures from their Sudan range, love to see how these would scale. Try the "The long arm of empire" by Richard Brooks, a great read with lots of scenario ideas.

Thank you all for the kind comments, I always look forward to seeing them ( it's my secret shame lol).
For Pauljb and Dirk, I don't own any Perrys Naval brigade but here's a photo with a Copplestone Officer on the left and a Perrys plastic Native mixed in. I think they mix no problem in my opinion.
The Empress sculpts are lovely and I highly recommend them. Hope this helps.

Jeff, you'll be seeing some Perry Naval Brigade (and possibly some Copplestone), plus some Empress regular Brits to be painted as RMLI, sooner rather than later.  :-)

Brook's book is very good, and there are plenty of accounts of Naval Brigades in action in the Zulu and Sudan campaigns, in West and East Africa, during the Boer War and Boxer Rebellion, amongst others.

Then there's the earlier actions in central India during the Mutiny, New Zealand and with Rajah Brooke in Sarawak, for which both the Mutineer Miniatures and Empress models are perfect - though putting together a force of Chinese pirates and Sea Dyaks (having read Flashman's Lady) may be a bit more of a challenge but not impossible. IIRC, the Durham Club did a big game using Sharp Practice a couple of years ago...

It's this stuff George, best stuff out there IMHO. No frosting and flat as a pancake.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Winsor-Newton-Professional-Matt-Varnish/262861447289?_trksid=p2385738.c100677.m4598&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908110712%26meid%3Da38d148a016f46059e6b6e8c93e825fe%26pid%3D100677%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D23%26sd%3D222110078588

Don't mix it up with the general purpose varnish as that has a slight sheen to it.
Hope this helps,

Jeff

Sorry Harry, I haven't got a Vallejo blue to do a comparison but someone on here must know. I've used the Foundry triad Union Blue 111, and the Windsor and Newton varnish mentioned above lifts the colour a little in my opinion. It's about eight quid for the three pots of paint but I use it a lot so it's well worth the money.

And a question: which Osprey is a good reference for these?

Dave the Perrys and Empress stuff matches a treat the Copplestone stuff is slightly chunkier but not enough to bother me.

And it's growing lol. Up to 18 Marines now just six left to do plus a mounted Officer. I wish they were mine but I'm painting them for a fellow Laffer who has a huge Zulu War collection.
