Title: Soldados Pulp Alley Stuff
Post by: soldado on September 28, 2016, 08:31:50 AM
So With the impending release of The Tomb of the  Serpent Campaign, I thought I'd gather some of the random figures I've gathered over the last few months and give them some paint.

However I'm not entirely sure of a; who makes each of them and b; Individual names and a league name.

So if anyone knows where they're from as I'd like to see more from the catalogues, or has suggestions for names etc please post.

Fairly sure the dog is from the Beach Commander 2014 Salute figure.

The one on the left and the two on the right are Foundry. Darkest Africa range.

I have the Santa Claus mini but I can't remember where I got it from!

I have him too. He was a special con giveaway (by Artizan, I think), but I can't recall which con or when.

Aragnor, sorry about the sore spot, if it helps I've put the camp site to the side as the books arrived and I couldnt resist start making some of the terrain mentioned.

That looks fantastic, we have had so many games in the Terra-Block Tomb of the Serpent over the last year or so...

On the 28th October, we will be launching a Kickstarter called Exotic Locations - These are all terrain sets designed for use with Tomb of the Serpent.
One of the locations is the museum.

Thanks DowVooVoo

So the museum is proving annoyingly difficult to progress  but on the other hand, two other locations are coming together.

First up is Fotherington Hall

And the Graveyard

Still got some extensions to make for the graveyard to make it 18x18"

As always, what do you think?

me again, this is coming together slowly, very slowly, darn you real life  :'(

not much on the major terrain pieces, but here are some of the scatter bits for out in the desert.

the ruins are fish tank ornaments, pyramid is a knick knack I found in a charity shop. the trees are pegasus hobbies and the treasure/ statue are from reaper.

Thanks for the kind words all, some more progress has been made this week on the larger terrain items so there should be pics of finished locations this weekend.

I picked some decent (and remarkably cheap) mdf desert style building off an ebay seller this week so that has sped up the population of table space greatly.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4x-28mm-Medium-Size-adobe-Desert-Flat-Roof-Buildings-Set-C-MDF-Laser-Cut-3mm-/361618572199?hash=item54322583a7

(Sellers image not mine)

Once the major bits are done then its on to the Insane mobs, other assorted nasties and random characters from the various scenarios along with bits of themed scatter terrain etc.

Anyone got good (or otherwise :D) suggestions for making sand dunes?

Extruded foam shaped with a hot wire. Apply sand and paint.  It makes great shapes and you can make them as simple or as complicated as you need.

Requires me building (or procuring by other means) a hot wire cutter, but not impossible, thanks.

Yeah, the seller does have some other decent bits, I picked up his warehouse as well so while not on the scale of the Ark of the covenant storage warehouse, it might provide an interesting search and recover scenario.

So a couple of my major locations are finished. (well near enough to game on)
first up the museum

I havent done a front wall as I want to use this as a photo box as well, I may well end up doing a separate frontage but its not needed immediately.

And then we have Fotherington Hall

Here we see some brave explorers just about to discover it isnt as abandoned as it looks!

We can also see why I'm not allowed to choose the wallpaper for our real house :D

And finally for today some WIP rock formations, one of which is very suspiciously shaped, hmmm I wonder if its the plot point?

Apart from the skull which is a polystyrene Halloween decoration these are made from the cheap yellow car sponges glued down ripped up (Oh man what a mess!) and then squidged into a bowl of paint to get an even base coat. once dry (next week by the feel of it) its drybrush time.
Title: Re: Soldados Pulp Stuff

Some innovative ideas there.

I would suggest that you give the rock formations a dousing in PVA/wood glue before they dry.
That should harden them up a little and make drybrushing a little easier.
You could also sprinkle some sand on them while the glue is still wet for added texture.
 ;)

Thanks, cant claim the rocks thing as original unfortunately :(

Easy? I never do it the easy way  :D but thanks for the suggestion, I may well do it in the end but i'm gonna go with squashy initially, that way: A, they'll compress for storage, B, they can act as padding for more delicate items.

Some of the miniatures are progressing now.
1st A random Fez wearing somebody is inspecting the weeping statue for the graveyard.

And now with a giant spider, this will be one of the Dune Stalker nasties.

Here are the 4 Faceless, after one of their number fell to an America archeologist who cheated and brought a gun to a sword fight, the Faceless have embraced modern technology.  :D
(http://imgur.com/cu4PXgw.jpg)

And finally guarding a plot point marker here are the risen warriors, still undecided as to whether or not to give them shields.

so after a sleepless night I ended up sketching down some ideas for additional rooms for the tomb at the end of the campaign, the idea being that important temples never have just one room, they have lots, if films like The Mummy and Hellboy and Indian Jones are to be believed (turn of phrase) then our ancestors were amazing structural engineers for underground complexes as well as mad ingenious psychopaths when it came to traps.

These are not for use in the campaign, but are more for expanding possibilities.

Here are the first couple of additional rooms.

This one is supposed to be paths above a cavernous drop with similar rules to the tomb with traps the player must disarm this is achieved by completing plot points that aren't marked as yet but will not be next to the traps just to make life a bit more awkward for our plucky heroes.

This ones still in advanced planning stages

A hall of columns, there will be rubble strewn here and there to make the wandering heroes move in not such a straight line for the exit, there will be random bad guys to contend with, but the main problem will be the spider, who I'm planning to move randomly about, if it moves into contact or into an adjacent square will initiate combat. If you lose then you become cocooned.

as it is, its the right idea but im not happy with the columns may need a rethink on how to do them.

more to follow......

And back to bits for the campaign  8)

Here we have the bits for "The thing in the well" not much needed here.

Some rock outcrops for the desert areas.

And the main graveyard section including the "Weeping statue" for "The evil below"

The extensions for this to make it 18"x18" are drying at the mo.

I found this tower at the craft shop, seems very useful

And as yet I still have no real clue on how to do the terrain for "The sideshow of Horrors"

First Game Played!!!

So the inaugural game of the campaign played out with the league of the Creeping Claw pitting itself against the servants of Apophis in Grave yard.
This isn't a great battle report, I never remember what happens really or remember to take detailed photos.

The Evil Below
The setup

The Claw and his lackeys approach the graveyard, little suspecting that his notoriety has meant that the servants have called upon the might of a Risen Priest to bolster their forces of 3 Militant Cultists and 2 Fierce Cultists (A dice roll of 2 on the servants chart, should have been 2 Militant cultists and 3 Fierce Cultists but I got confused o_o )

Within the first turn One of the Claws Allies Dr Bodkin reaches the first minor plot point and fails abysmally to push it over, the rest of the league begin fanning out cautiously amongst the graves.
The servants advance and announce their presence by shooting wildly, a few birds were scared but that was about it.

In turn 2 (managed to forget to get a photo)

The Claws sidekick Agatha Aiguille (she likes sharp things) managed to, despite failing her horror check move upto and knock over a pedestal, Bodkin joined by his rather incompetent assistant Igor (who also failed his horror check :( ) failed yet again to knock over the their pedestal plot point. This may have been due to the rather imposing presence of the Risen priest bounding towards them.

The servants fan out with the Priest deciding to ignore the more powerful characters and take on the minions, the cultists carried on their tactics of shooting wildly into the air or waving big sticks around to no effect at all.

Turn 3

Agatha and the Claw ably assisted by Patch the dog attempt to break open the weeping statue and Fail!, Bodkin and Igor get the shock of their lives as having failed to knock over the pedestal in front of them, The weeping statue materialises right there......

The servants Close in our heroes to add to the pressure.

Turn 4

Bodkin decides that dodging away from the priest is probably for the best, leaving Igor Facing the statue alone. Passing his horror check he fails to break the statue which teleports to the far corner of the graveyard. Sensing an opportunity The Claw moves in and having passed a horror check breaks the statue from her pedestal retrieving the Wings of Celerity Relic, claiming its powers for himself and ending the game.

All in a really fun game cheers to the players Dave (The Claw) and Rog in his very first game of Pulp Alley played the Servants.

David

While the Creeping Claw make his way to Egypt, others as yet unknown will challenge the will of servants of the serpent to claim a relic for themselves!

Other members of the gaming group watched the game and asked about joining in, I could very probably have 2 sets of 4 players running through the campaign at once, but that might get very confusing  o_o

And with the first game played, some of the action may move to Cairo, so here are the museum and its immediate environs, the area is not as salubrious as it once was.

Still need to attach doors, paint statues and the snake wall, but getting there.

Hi Argonor

The dancer is Nalani by Reaper minis

https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/dancing/sku-down/03531

Painting Skin and by extension faces is the bit I most fail at with character models, generic troops I can get away with a quick splash and wash but some models deserve more work.

Thanks!

Painting Skin and by extension faces is the bit I most fail at with character models, generic troops I can get away with a quick splash and wash but some models deserve more work.

The important thing to do when painting (detailed) faces is for me to use at least 4 layers of progressively lighter tones, and, of course, it requires a little practice, but as soon as one 'cracks the code' it is more or less the same one does with each and every face thereafter. If the skin tones are  balanced, blending is not really required for minis meant to be looked at at an arm's length (on the table).

I find Foundry's triads very handy for this - I most often mix intermediate tones, and sometimes also darker and lighter tones to expand the colour range of each triad.

Really, trouble with characters?
I should be so lucky to achieve the results you have with the dancer and the investigator.
I have him primed up right now, I doubt I will achieve result comparable to your work!
I always tend to do mass painting, units and the like, lack of patience/technique for major personality figures.

Then add in your great scenery! :-*

Overall very inspirational thank you for posting.
Now it is time for me to get working on some scenery too!
Title: Re: Soldados Pulp Alley Stuff - First Game played pg3

Thank you Menelduir

You're too kind, I've seen your blog and you have excellent figures and terrain.

It's been a long number of years since I painted 28mm figures, having concentrated on 15mm since getting back to gaming 4 years ago. Doing skin satisfactorily (for me) has proved to be the biggest challenge of moving up a scale or 2.

At the moment I'm building up characters to form leagues for those players in the club who don't have models and to fill in the ones specified in the Tomb campaign. These are trickling in from models bought off members here and on ebay so they  tend to get done in fits and starts rather than as a block.

I need to get on with the gangs for the campaign. They're built and primed but just a mental block on my part really. Same with the fair ground terrain bits for the campaign.

You're welcome.

I am not sure what it is you don't like about the blue girl; is it the overall paler expression of the face compared to the limbs? if so, it is something I refer to as 'flat-lighting', where I cover too much of the first, darker, layers with the later, lighter layers. Can happen very easily, especially when painting relatively small areas needing a lot of definition - also still happens for me now and then when painting other kinds of areas, if I do not restrain myself. Only real cure is to either apply a wash or start over with the dark basecoat and build up again, maybe skip a layer between basecoat and main colour or between main colour and final highlight, depending on the desired effect/depth of colour.

I wouldn't go back and change anything on her, though, she looks fine to me, and animals often have differently coloured facial features (and you can always pull out and repaint a mini if you grow tired of a certain detail) - your minis are ace and when placed in your fine terrain make for a wargaming treat.  :)

My main issue with Sekhmet (Blue Girl) is that there is not a lot of definition, she has very smooth limbs as opposed to Sokar (Big Guy) who is fairly ripped and therefore easier to define with high lights.

I have Reapers Avatar of Thoth as well who is similar in size to Sekhmet but is more like Sokar with the muscle definitions, so we'll see how he turns out.

Although these wont be used in the Tomb of the Serpent campaign they may well find use as the bad guys in pulp games of

I was looking at other methods more due to cost as even the cheapest sets tend, when factoring in I need 25 columns, to be more than I want to spend over all :) All I've found is sets of 4 for around 3 -4 pounds, the Dowel pins were £2.50 ish but I'm now thinking that I may just buy 15mm dowel rod cut it down to the needed length and then do printed paper wraps similar to the how I've done the walls.

In one version of the final "Serpent Tomb" scenario, we had the league Leaders actually transform into an avatar of their patron Egyptian god.  ;)

so after a sleepless night I ended up sketching down some ideas for additional rooms for the tomb at the end of the campaign....

Great idea! In an early version of the campaign Dad had more scenarios designed for each chapter but he couldn't get it all to fit in the final version.  ;)

Cheers guys

I got a cheap sugarcraft mould off of fleabay, various experiments with plaster and greenstuff have produced naff results.

Tried it with some Sculpey and the results are encouraging.

Had to undercoat them to get the detail to show up on camera but once painted they'll make decent objective markers or mounted on buildings as decoration.

I think its time to search ebay some more to see what can be found.

again thanks for all the positive comments.

I think if you knock and edge off the details here and there ,and carve in the odd crack. Possibly half buried in sand an the odd tuft of dried grass. Then that soft detail will come into its own as weathered stone.
Then you should end up with some nice story pieces for you stuff.

Definitely makes the soft edges of the detail feel worn down.I actually like the colour contrasts between the grey surface and the cracks. I'd try a subtle coloured highlight in the cracked areas when you paint not just a shade.(if it doesn't work for you . You can always re shade them.)

Hi

D Phipps, Plot points not objective markers  ;D shows how long it is between games  :'(

Tin Shed gamer, thanks for the comments, not sure if im reading your comments wrong but what your seeing is me scribing into the sculpey through the undercoat, these will get painted most likely in a sandstone colour.

The Bibliophile, I googled "Doll's house textures" "Doll house wallpapers" and similar to find the various files both in PDF and jpeg formats all around the web. sorry I cant be more specific, but I cant remember myself to be honest.

obviously this link will die over time but I searched for "Egyptian coin mould"

After various experiments with plaster and greenstuff to try and get decent casts I gave up with it, it wasn't until my daughter who being 6 was drawn to the pinkness of the mould managed to make a couple of decent casts out of it with playdoh that I nicked it back and tried sculpey which worked a treat.

The surfaces were then dug into with a dental pick to give it that weathered look and feel.

And a bit of a WIP here, for the spy vs spy modern pulp

Today, I managed to persuade the wife to play Pulp Alley for the first time so that I could get my head back around the rules, turns out she has all the luck with the dice, in 2 run throughs of "A Cairo caper" she did not fail a single peril/ challenge or plot point! It's just not cricket!  :D

Here's the table we played on.

Thanks Mark and Mr Phipps

At the weekend we played another game in the campaign and this time I actually got to deploy the servants and role some dice for them :D

The Creeping Claw gets involved in "Shady Deals"

"The voice that whispers, it tells me I must find the artefacts! The Museum, we must search the museum!"

After his hard fought battle in the grave yard The Creeping Claw has arrived in Cairo and must begin his search for the artefacts that will help him cross the desert.

Seizing the initiative in the first turn, Claw sends his minions towards the museum while he goes off on a hunch to check a nearby warehouse.

Igor (follower) questions a local street performer but fails to get any information.

Mean while the followers of Apophis glide through the streets (or in the case of the insane mobs, fail their perils and fall off the ladders leading to the rooftops)

The Claws band of ne'er do wells advance cautiously towards the museum taking potshots at the advancing mobs, having seemingly forgotten what they were sent to search for they quickly become embroiled in a desperate scrum around the East wing, and although they get knocked down a few times the whispering fates smile down upon them. The followers of Apophis subject to his capricious whim are not so fortunate and go down like nine pins.

Meanwhile the Claw discovers that going off on his own through the dark streets is not the best idea as he suddenly finds himself face to face with the serpent priest (I used the risen priest model here, mostly because I haven't finished the more appropriate one)

Deciding that discretion is the better part of valour, he ducks back around the building and heads off to rejoin his minions.

The priest attempts to cut him off but is foiled by the obstreperous camels blocking his path.

Final act

Although they whittled away the followers and minions of Apophis the Claws league were unable to search the area fully and ended the search with only a minor plot point. The anger in whispered voice's silence is palpable! Failure will not be tolerated....

sorry for the few photos, I got so involved I forgot to take them :(

Must try and get some more scenery done, more minis done.. where has all my time gone!

very much a WIP

The quarter circle you can sort of see will be raised seating areas that may or may not have little walls for privacy and that all important cover bonus should the streets decide to not stay outside!

Cheers Wolf Girl

So I was recently asked to do a zombie scenario by some the players (have I ever said how much I detest zombies?). so only having 4 suitable zombies, (only 3 of which I could find) bought by mistake as I couldn't tell the difference between the Mantic ghouls and zombie sprues, I have had to do some more.

Duly bought from the Bay of Fleas,  cut to a few days later and here they are.

(EDIT: changed the picture for one a bit less rubbish)

there are some more zombie egg plot point markers done as well.

Onto the scenario.

Zombie Town Scenario

Table - 4' x 4' standard playing area with a town/ village setup to fit your leagues current geographic area.
All buildings are perilous areas (after all you never know what went down before!)

You need 4 Zombie egg/ cocoon markers for the minor plot points and some sort of summoning/ ritual piece for the major plot point

Scenario - Your league has heard of a town from which all communications have been lost, given your recent success against the servants of Apophis you have been asked to investigate.
Arriving in the town you find it deserted and eerily quiet only strange inhuman sounds echo through the streets. You stumble upon some sort of egg like cocoons and investigate...... with a wet squelching rip and egg "hatches" and out crawls something from which you recoil in horror..... destroy it! destroy them all!

Pre game tasks - Roll on the random events table as per Tomb of the Serpent campaign Act 2. Roll a D10 to determine how many zombies are on the table to start with.   :D

In game tasks - Destroy all four minor plot points as at the start of each turn that they still not destroyed they will release 1 zombie (within 3" of the plot point)
who spawn and can be activated by the GM/ zombie player as normal.

Major plot point - placed in a building at the center of the board a Serpent priest and 5 Militant cultists are attempting to raise a Mummy, stop them!

When a minor plot point is destroyed a Cultist will leave the building and go to investigate, the controlling player is free to use the deployed cultists as she/ he sees fit. The Serpent priest will stay with the major plot point until defeated or it is destroyed.

Zombies are Ally level minions with Horror 1 characteristic an the animal trait (included)

Brawl 2D6, Shoot N/A, Dodge D6, Might 2D6, Finesse D6, Cunning D6.

Militant Cultists and Serpent Priest as per the TotS book

Minor and major plot points are horrific (levels 2 and 3 respectively)

Any hints, tips and improvements from the far more experienced player/ GMs here?

All feedback is well and truly appreciated.

Mr Phipps, hopefully its fun and challenging for the leauges involved, i was debating whether to swap the starting zombies with abominations/ ghouls just to mix up the available monster types.

And as I needed some cultists for this and for games in general ive finally finished off some more.

It is indeed Mr Phipps

And now onto some jungle head hunter types, there's enough to make a nice league should I decide to or I'll just use them in the same vein as the servants of Apophis follower types so the leader could be the serpent priest level, those with guns could be armed cultists and then the guys with spears will be insane mob level gangs.

While awaiting the reinforcements, I have managed to finish these off, they're a present for my daughter (her of the zombie egg naming), to try and persuade he to play some light games with me.

As she's 6  Im gonna be sitting down thinking about how to copy the episodes plot styles rather than use the full PA rules.

Initial thoughts are that the plot points will be various characters and she has to explore and question them and/ or build traps.

The villain will make an appearance per turn to try and scare the gang off (not sure how this will work right now)

Completing all the plot points will allow the gang to confront and reveal the villain.

Glad you like it, scooby and co went down a treat when I showed them to her, so much so that she sneaked Scoob and Shaggy off to school and I need to give them a touch up :D

Havent as yet managed to sort out a simplified set of rules  to actually get her to play. might try out some ideas with her this weekend based around the haunted house scenario from Tomb of the Serpent.

Some progress was made with the Cafe bar but not enough to actually use it as yet

Looking around for printable furniture to carry on the house build from the TotS book, I found on Wargames Vault the Stoelzels structure's Haunted House.

Hi Pete of course.

The document weighs in at 103 pages but you do need to print 2 pages twice so 105.

I've used the majority of an A2 size sheet of foamboard doing the ground floor and the beginnings of the 1st and will need another if Im to carry on.

the instructions need a few read throughs but it became clearer when I had the bits in front of me. I printed it out on standard printer paper and with only one or two major parts to a page and those well labelled doing the actual cutting and assembly of the parts went smoothly enough.

Putting all the walls into place got a bit tricky, as I found one or two of the walls did not meet up as expected, one in paticular is at least 8mm to long. which is why the build looks a bit wobbly in places, so test fitting all connections before applying glue is essential.

The only doors I cut out were the secret passage ones and for those there are rabbeting templates so it was easy enough.

Over all its a nice model and worth the investment if you have the time to build it.

Tah

Swelling the ranks of nasties, more cultists, these are the balance of the Blind beggar minis from the KS.

And SG-1 are in for a hot welcome on this particular world, I think they're gonna need a M.A.L.P!

Great stuff!
A most sinister looking bunch.
First time that I have seen the whole lot painted up by someone other than myself too.
 :-* :-*

The view through the Stargate is great too, but I have no idea what a M.A.L.P. is....

Glad you like them Paul.

A M.A.L.P is a "Mobile Analytic Laboratory Probe." Basically the recon bot from the TV series.

later on they became similar to the bomb disposal bots the army uses.

To be honest I had no idea what it stood for, just thats what they called it every time they went through the gate.

the later ones shouldnt be to difficult to construct......

So I got distracted with building a M.A.L.P

Its way to large based on the one in the show, but hey its heroicly proportioned :D

what do you lot think, should I try and make it smaller?

I think that it looks great as it is.

When you miniaturise something to correct scale it could well look too small, so I would certainly stick with what you have made, as it could end up looking like K-9 if you make it any smaller.

Cheers

Im gonna get on with it this weekend, and do a couple more bits.

In other news shapeways had free shipping and I ordered some Eygyptian themed columns that a friend did for me.

so a bad screenshot of the stl file render

and the printed result, its not smooth and the hieroglyphs are missing (but I never expected them to print really)

once I've cast up/ printed out some more they'll be destined for this terrain piece from way back on page 3

I like those columns. Are both from Shapeways? Why are they different colors?
Title: Re: Soldados Pulp Alley Stuff - now withall new MALP
Post by: soldado on September 16, 2017, 06:00:03 PM
Glad you like them, the grey one is undercoated so the details show up slightly and yes they are printed from shapeways.

In other news, the MALP and I have had creative differences and he's gone his own way, so I've had to find a new MALP.

Any similarities in parts and construction are purely coincidental and not what could be salvaged from the dismantled chassis...

And 2 more minis

One for the Pyramids and one for the modern pulp.

And the new MALP painted up.

and a close up

Its been a while, mostly because work is getting in the way  >:(

While wandering around the local charity shops I came across my finest find so far I feel.

Disney Planes 2 Cabbie model, a bit worse for weather around the props, but then he's been played with. And for £2 i am not complaining in the slightest  :D

so 2 old DVDs a knife, sandpaper, and a couple of hours to apply 2 of those to the other and hey presto..

Model for scale is from Aenor miniatures

Might I suggest looking into a company called Prop Blur.... it'll add that extra level of detail to your plane!

So not quite finished but some progress at least

As its a gaming piece im not yet convinced of the durability of the etched brass props or that being the clumsy ol' sot I am, that when reaching to move a model in and around the plane, that I won't open my arm up on the sharp brass bits. I'll stick with my much less convincing way for the time being.
