I am being very lazy but I know I’ll get the answers I am looking for from this forum.
I am going to be painting some early German infantry for a pulp game. I have painted smaller 20mm German infantry in the passed but not to very good standard. Basically flat field grey and flat black for the webbing. No high lights or shading.
Now that I am a better painter and wanting to paint better detailed 28 mm I am looking for help with the colours to use.
The majority of paints that I use are GW so I was wondering which of these to use.
I was thinking;
Uniform
Undercoat -black
Base coat -Codex Grey
High light- Fortress grey
Some questions
Were the collar and epaulets a different colour?
I seem to remember a dark green collar?
Epaulets black with white piping?
What colour to paint the helmet?
I was thinking of these as early war German infantry and I am sure I remember pictures of a different colour jacket? Invasion of Poland, etc.
I have looked on the internet for ideas but my main problem is what GW colours suit?
I think I have an old Valaro field grey, if it is not dried up. But I seem to remember not liking the colour.
So can anybody help please?
I want to paint these over the weekend.
I will post pictures of my progress.

german uniforms had a hint of green in them. I use Vallejo paints for Germans. The collar is a dark bottle green, Dark Angels Green may do it.

Thanks guys some very useful links.
Only things it does not clear up is the best colour for the helmet. Dark grey? Any suggestions?

I use Vallejo German grey myself. Maybe start with a 50/50 mix of black and fortress grey using GW paint?

If you want to represent the early war uniform you should use Vallejo German Uniform (920) instead of Vallejo German Fieldgrey WWII (830) as the early war blouse was much greener than later in the war.
My own German (early WWII) ended up looking like that…

I know you asked for tips concerning Citadel colors but you should easily find equivalence if you use this site; http://colors.silicon-dragons.com/full_line.php
Hope that helped.

The model 1935 German helmet (the model worn in Poland) was actually more green than the later models. Collectors refer to it as "apple green" Here's a link which will show the double decal helmet -
Instead of posting a link which may contain offensive symbols, you can search for yourself. Use searchword: double decal 1935 helmet

Check out the flames of war site there is a good picture and explanation of colours
