Got another on the go for David Imrie, a small Scottish castle set around the 1400's.
It will be taking the basic form of the picture below with some added (but on a separate base) stables and a barmkin wall (no archery step or battlements). It will be rendered as were most of the castles of the time and the colour will be a pale tan/grey; so no blue bricks on this one ;D
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Terrain/Portencross%20castle/9473948F-75E2-4182-ADDE-012BDD375E8C_zps4fuoa9m3.jpg)
Below is the layout and there will be more to follow soon (hopefully will get the main castle ready for the 12th of November). There will be two adjoining walls that will help to connect the two bases together and the intention is to use magnets to help keep them in place whilst play is on. There will also be a different wall that can be used to enclose the stables area but this will become apparent as construction continues.

Construction starts tomorrow :D
cheers

More my end of the trench so I'll keep an eye on this one Jim.
(mind you you'll be done by Friday :D)
-
Not enough projects James?! :D
Looks good. I've seen the castle pictures somewhere before and like them 8)
-
WHAT?!?! No blue bricks?!?! Coward ;)
It seems half of all the new threads are Jims! The mans a machine! :o
-
Here he goes again.....
-
Can't wait for the first pictures!
-
Thanks chaps :)
WHAT?!?! No blue bricks?!?! Coward ;)
You know what you can do don't you ;D
It will be made from blue foam though, just rendered afterwards ;)

If it's a castle for a Scotsman make sure you get paid in advance, in cash and remember to hold the notes up to the light.
Looking forward to this one.
-
Oh boy! Looking forward to this.
-
Very much looking forward to seeing how this emerges... :D
-
This looks promising, will follow with interest :)

Hey!!! No need for that sort of comment!!......anyway we'd pay him in Scottish notes! ;)

Hey!!! No need for that sort of comment!!......anyway we'd pay him in Scottish notes! ;)
I would take them Scottish notes if I were you.
They will be worth more than the Bank Of England ones soon enough.
;)
-
Can't wait to see how this turns out and only 2 weeks to finish it? :o :o
....anyway we'd pay him in Scottish notes! ;)
Exactly why they need checking. :D :D
-
If you are not doing individual bricks you have to at least put lights in it then.
-
Two pages and nothing built yet lol
There will be tonight though ;)
cheers
James

Nothing he can't handle lol
-
Well, a small start but a start nonetheless
I've decided to use a styrene covered foam core for the build as it will allow me to stick the quoins and window surrounds etc with relative ease as they will be made from various sizes and thicknesses of microstrip.
Just the one photo for now.
Will hopefully get it blocked out and the details started at the weekend as I'm busy Thursday and Friday.
cheers
James

OMG - that looks AMAZING. More, more!!! :D
(Cheap shot to get on the bandwagon.)

So, flickering micro-LEDs to set the ambience and bluetooth speaker for the background noise?
(Also, another cheap shot to watch.)

Totally this. Have it play the soundtrack to Highlander.

Totally this. Have it play the soundtrack to Highlander.
Have it play Susan Boyle and hold its new owner to ransom. Fifty quid to take it out.
-
Nice start Jim
How do you manage to cut out the arched doorway so neatly?
-
No lights, it's not mine and they are not required.
How do you manage to cut out the arched doorway so neatly?
Just practice mate, that and a sharp scalpel blade :)
cheers
James

Your circular cutter(carefully used) should be able to do that one Colin.
-
No it won't it has a bent pin and blunt blade :D
-

I'm not even going to ask!
Looks good Jim. Although I was expecting brick by brick.
Kind regards
Andy
-
It looks like a good start, mate, but you really need to do something about that missing wall.
It wont keep many invaders out like that.
;D
-
Nothing suspect just over use
-
Another great show from one of the masters.
I'm looking forward to watching!
Cheers

-
Looking forward to seeing this through to completion. 😀
-
Going to follow this too
I need inspiration for a small castle
-
Thanks again gents :)
A very tiny update because at the moment I'm cutting up rather a large amount of quoins to go on the corners. The windows are done and I'm also working on the door. The windows will be stuck in and then I'll apply the roof/battlements.
The main hall window was originally a blank for some GW buildings I was doing but I've added some microstrip and the two upper corner sections from styrene to liven it up a bit.
Now the final wall is in place and I did it off square and not straight because there's hardly any castles that have square corners anyway ;D

More to follow later this evening :)
cheers
James
-
The window is very nice but is it really a medieval castle window not very secure or defensible?
-
It's a good 80mm up the wall and I've seen plenty of great hall windows similar to this one. It'll probably make more sense later tonight when I take some more photos :)
cheers
James
-
I thought these type of windows were later additions
-
I've seen a few (supposedly) from the period and a bit earlier. It's not stuck so if David doesn't like it I'll do a different one :)
cheers
James
-
The build reminds me of Neidpath Castle near Peebles. Looking good.
-
Looks like a great model...jealous of Mr Imrie - the gothic window looks great for 1400s.
Simon.
-
Cheers fellas :)
Got some quoining done and the opening surrounds. Takes a while but I think it will look ok when complete.

Just the back ones to do then it's texture time :)
Or I might do the wooden staircase ???
Or look at the roof...
The choices are endless :D
cheers
James

Nice start. Looking forward to watching this progress. thanks for sharing
-
Lovely progress, mate.
:-* :-*
You know that you should have built another one at the same time to use for GOT, dontcha...?
;)
-
Excellent mate! :o I love the different thicknesses of the quoins.
How are you going to do the stonework between the corners? :?
-
I'm imagining the excitement of a Scottish laird when he hears his castle is covered in quoins.
-
How do you make each individual quoin? Are they each made from one piece (of plastic?) or two?
-
Thanks for the replies chaps :)

;)
Already got a tower for that ;D
How are you going to do the stonework between the corners? :?
It's going to be rendered and I'll be putting it on thick enough so the quoins don't stick out as much.
How do you make each individual quoin? Are they each made from one piece (of plastic?) or two?
Each one is two pieces taken from a random assortment cut out first.
Got the wooden stairs done last night and here they are. Quite pleased with the way they've turn out.

The figures are on pennies (21mm across) and Davids figures are on 20mm squares so there's room to play if he wishes :)
cheers

Brilliant miniatures David :-*
Brilliant miniature carpentry skills, James. (Like I said the other night, I prefer the more rough and ready approach ;))

Those stairs are great.

Excellent miniature carpentry! :D

Really silly question, but do you use a mitre box for your miniature wood work?
-
No mate, just plenty of these...

I don't like the way that freaky metal owl is staring at me.
(I can't be the only one to think it looks like an owl? :D)
-
Thanks again chaps :)
(I think it's only you Steve ;D )
Finished the quoins and only have got he windows to do then it's onto the roof areas.

Another great build taking shape. I never tire of marvelling at your work.
-
I like the use of the rockwork in the corner section. I seem to recall seeing quite a few buildings like that. It's a very nice detail.
-
Looking good. I did manage to get in the photo after all ;) lol
-
Fortunately just a hand though lol
cheers
James
-
Pretty impressive start, along with the other projects I've seen from you, I am more than certain that this is going to turn out incredible! Keep it up and good luck with the build.
-
Looking good.
8)
Fortunately just a hand though lol
Indeed.
You dont want any shiny domes on your castle, do ya, mate.
;D
-
Nice work so far mate.
Looks suitably bleak and, err, Scottish... ;)
-
Oh man... very impressive !
-
Thanks again gents :)
Got the first roof bulked out. It looks a little small but that's only because there room around the parapet for figures (and the vast majority of wargaming buildings have a reduced footprint anyway).

I could've got a bit more done but I ended up playing some Shogun Total War - Fall of the Samurai in between citing and gluing ::)
cheers
James
-
Looks great now, it's really coming together ;D
-
I'm liking that a lot! 8)......now start with the wee blue foam bricks! ;)
-
Looking good.
-
Cheers fellas :)
now start with the wee blue foam bricks! ;)
no...
Anyway ;) got the roof done this morning. that's a chimney stack in the middle and I've got some nice medieval chimney tops somewhere that'll do nicely. I decided not to a second tiled roof for the lower part as it would be too small.

Good build decisions. I think you've got the right balance between aesthetics and gameability.

Nice work - I am enjoying watching your progress. :)

Got to agree, great work on this Jim
It was one of the things I didn't like on my castle build, that figures couldn't walk right around the roof top

Impressive build,looks great :-*

The windows are only in for show at the moment. They need backing with fine mesh for the leading and then black card. They'll be stuck in once all the exterior painting is complete (along with the door).

what can I say? FanF...ingtastic
Very inspiring to try n build something like it, but as most of the times Id proberly end up taking shortcuts and focus on painting miniatures instead.
the headlines says commissioned, as in your selling these ? what the price gonna be ?? might be interested if affordable?
Cheers Tordenkuglen aka Thungerball :D
