There's a fad these days of having magnificently rendered shields for every soldier/warrior in yer army. Did every army/warband contain a Leonardo da Vinci, solely tasked with outshielding, the baddies with his paintbrush? if not there was some very talented squaddies in them ancient/dark age armies!

Consider aircraft 'pin-up' paintings in WW2 or the Gulf, the number of airbrush artist there are for vehicles or even the profusion of tattoo artists today. Lots of this work is quite well executed and often striking but its probably fair to say its very bold and often based on close copies of more original work. I don't think it would have been too difficult to find either a soldier with such a talent or a local artisan or slave. Clearly, long-service units on lengthy garrison postings would have better artwork than say, a rapidly-raised Roman civil war legion.
