Well this is the first project I've started for quite a while (over two years in fact).
I've been playing a lot of SP2 lately and I've been bitten by the bug, so I've decided to put a couple of small forces together lifted in the main from the rule book.
I've started with the British which initally will consist of 3 "big men" and 38 rank and file and will be based around the Royal Welch Fusiliers (obvs) and the Guards light companies.
I've painted the first big man, he's a level1 Sergeant and four rankers to keep him company, I'll update the thread as I go along and hopefully that will keep me committed to the project and stop me getting side tracked by the next shiny thing lol.
Anyway here's some photos.
-
Lovely :D
But the confusing thing is that they're you're own lol
cheers

Some close ups, with a picture of the backpack which has a stencilled Regimental badge on the back.
-
Actually painting figures for yourself?
Whatever next?
They look lovely though ;D
-
Stunning work Jeff!
-
Nice work Jeff! :D
Are they on 20mm round bases?
-
Wow, very nice.
-
Great stuff Jeff :)
-
Nice work on those minis Jeff, can't wait to see the Rebs :)
-
They look great, Jeff. Nice project :)
-
Cracking work :D
-
Wonderful.
Love those badges*.
:-* :-*
*Most apt.
:D
And great to see you painting something for yourself.
Honest.....
;)
-
They look great Jeff. We've been playing a lot of Sharp Practice 2 AWI ourselves. It's a period I've never had a great deal of interest in but we've had some brilliant games.
-
Thanks chaps, I've promised myself at least a monthly update on this thread, let's see how that goes.
Nice work Jeff! :D
Are they on 20mm round bases?
They are mounted on British pennies Ray so yes about 20mm. Looking at the bases in the photos, they look really rough so that's the first thing I'm going to change. I'm also thinking of mounting my "big men" on larger bases so that they are more recognisable on the table top.

I've always loved the Perrys AWI stuff Steve, just never got around to doing anything about it. They are not the nicest figures to paint out there but I do like them all the same.
I really like SP2, I've tried all sorts of rules for the black powder period and I think these are the best. Learning the rules is not the easiest thing I've ever done but perseverance is paying off.
The time absolutely flys by when we play them, I think it's because you are constantly being asked to make descisions. never a dull moment lol.
I think I'll rebase these now and get the other two British leaders done next, not exactly sure what I'm looking for with the basing, but I'll know it when I see it lol.

Lovely painting on these Jeff - looking forward to seeing more.
Simon.

Very nice indeed

Lovely work :-* :-* :-*
The welsh feathers on the backpack is a cracking touch
Which one is the sargent?
Is this a possible game for BLAM next year?
-
Thanks guys much appreciated.

Colin, the sergeant is the one with the waist sash (I know, he doesn't stand out to well). However things are in motion to change that with some new basing and therefore a larger base for the Sergeant :)
Reading about all the games being planned for BLAMs 10th anniversary I imagine there wouldn't be room for me to put on a game if I wanted to (and that's a good thing).
Though I suppose we could extend BLAM by a couple of days lol.

This might be my problem too; an extra day's holiday and an extra night's accommodation and meals. :'(
That being said don't let it stop you guys. :)

Very nice painting indeed :)
I have seem pictures of the feathers in the hats being black, red and red and white. Were the colours particular to regiments, flank companies or officers?
-
Do you know, I'm really not sure. The level of my research amounts to reading the odd Osprey book and looking at pictures of how other people have painted them lol.
Green feathers may equate to light flank troops and red and white to centre or " hat" troops and possibly pure red or white to the Grenadiers, however that's based more upon my Napoleonic reading than AWI.
My take on it is that this particular Regiment had been in America since the start and would have contained a high proportion of veterans and been involved in a number of major campaigns. Their uniform would have been altered to take in the extremes of climate in the Southern campaign and mixed in with veterans hanging on to old bits of kit and new intake turning up in newly issued uniform, even in the same company not everybody's uniform would look the same so I'm not to fussy about how they are portrayed.
The important thing for me is that I will be able to tell the difference on the table top between the Welsh lads and the Guard light companies, because the 23rd will have the three white feathers and the Guards will have a single green feather :)
-
Thanks for the reply. Since posting I found a reference in one of my books to a red feather for rank and file. A red and white feather for officers. A black feather for light infantry.
-
That sounds about right, but I couldn't find to solid reference to offer up.
-
There is a useful conversation in the first part of this thread
http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=302131
It still leaves me confused (not hard by any means) but the thing I did pick up was that Light Infantry had black feathers before 1780 and green thereafter.
I'm thinking of using the Perry figures pictured below as Guard Light Company in close order, if I'm making a big mistake then could someone let me know, I'd appreciate it :)
Also my force will be based around the later part of the war in the Southern Campaign.
-
Thanks for the link though it has left me a bit confused as well. I have read other TMP discussions on AWI uniforms which are usually inconclusive. Don't get me started on Lee's Legion cavalry! lol When in doubt I generally go with what looks the best lol
Therefore those Perry figures should be fine I would have thought. There is just the matter of the flank company shoulder wings. I don't know if roundabouts had them but your thread suggest they can be painted on anyway as they weren't as proud as in later periods.
-
Well talk about falling at the first hurdle, real life took over and presented me with very little time for the brushes but as things start to settle down and all the piddling crap gets dealt with I've at last managed to return to my AWI stuff.
I changed the basing and got two more "big men" done along with 12 more rank and file taking the force up to 19 figures in total.
My Taffys will be led by the mounted Officer with the RWF sergeant acting as liaison with a small skirmish unit (which are being painted next) of light infantry.
The Officer waving his hat is going to command the Guard light infantry unit (another 16 figures) but that's a little further down the painting queue.

Lovely work mate :-*

Looking very nice indeed! Are those decals on the backpacks??? If so, source?

Thanks for the comments chaps, it's been nice to have something to post again and to get my "brush" waving about lol.

Hand painted attempt at stencilled Regimental badges, three feathers and a scroll and if you look close enough you will be able to see the motto "Ich dien" on the scroll ;) lol

Really nice - thanks for sharing . Great photos.

Those look great Jeff. I'm painting the 23rd too for SP2, but they don't look as good. I put the big men on 30 mm bases and the hat men on 20s. This seems to work well. Look forward to more reports!
-
Thanks everyone

I've done something similar with pennies for the rank and file and tuppenys for the big men.

Six more figures added to make up a small skirmish unit for Sharp Practice, black straps and green hat feathers are debatable I know but I've gone with them. Next up will be 16 Guard Light Company in line formation.
