Title: Steel discs
Post by: Hammers on October 31, 2016, 09:51:43 PM
Has anyone tried these or any equivalent as bases for your miniatures.

At £0.17 a piece the prices are not exactly competitive but they do not have that annoying hole in the middle like washers do.

For price/performance nothing can beat the trusted 2 pence coin  ;)

Yep, best use for 1p and 2p coins is basing!

Since the mid 80s or so UK copper coins have been steel. Way cheaper than the cheapest of washers.

I can also recommend Products for Wargamers for steel discs: http://www.productsforwargamers.com
It's where I get my bases (other than the 15mm washers I use for my individually based 15mm figures).

This might be a good option, for some reason all washers I have been able to find the past year have been twice as thick as the ones I'm used to. Like there was some new law passed or there is only one producer who supplies everybody who decided to make them thicker.

You are being anglocentric. We don't have a ready supply of British coinage over here.

Have you tried Hornbach? Sold by weight. Mine are from there and are 25mm in diameter and approximately 1,5mm thick...

I haven't but I clearly should. Though my "old" washers are under 1mm generally. Ah well.

I used them for a special order on artillery train bases, just means you have to buy between 50 to 100 bases.

My brother and have been I using 1" steel disks for basing almost exclusively for a few years now.  I got around a thousand of them from an engine plant that closed down back in 2010.
They give lighter figures some heft and they're obviously receptive to magnets for markers or flight stands.  We really like them.
