I'm planning to paint all the evil characters from the cover of the Warhammer Fantasy Battle Third Edition rulebook.
About 11 miniatures that will be a nice warband for Advanced Song of Blades & Heroes or Frostgrave.
Here the first two characters painted, two 1984 pre slotta C27 Chaos Goblin Mutants.
-
What an excellent idea! And very fine they look too! Those old chaos goblins are marvellous figures, and you've certainly done them justice.
-
A great project, keep going! :)
This is my favorite set from the "C" Era:

Love it! I never realised those two from the front cover of WH 3rd Ed were actual figures!
Lovely painting as always. 8)

Thanks :)
I have a WHFB 3rd edition rulebook and Also I didn't know that most of the characters from the cover were real miniatures.
I especially liked the Chaos Sorcerer, and I knew about the real miniature some time ago... then I did a research and found most of the miniatures.
Almost all of the miniatures are pre slotta, from the first compendium of citadel, only two miniatures (the chaos warrior and the orc with hat) have slotta bases.
This incresead my interest on citadel pre slotta miniatures, many of them are nice and could be fine with the right paint job.

It's always worth remembering that a lot of Citadel slottabased models were also pre-slotta models (the C36 hobgoblins, for example, and many of the lizardmen and beastmen). Others used the same bodies or heads: many of the first - excellent - range of slottabased orcs are conversions of the older Armoured Orc range. I think the very best Perry and Morrison Citadel miniatures fall immediately on either side of the introduction of slottabases - and many of them straddle it by having both solid and slotta incarnations.
-
Another character from the cover of the WHFB 3rd edition rulebook.
I had some problems to find this miniature, it was not available from the pre slotta range.
Then I found it in the AD&D range of citadel (BDD02 Dungeon monsters Boxed Set).
-
Very fun project - and a very good paintjob!
-
Very nice! I'd never made the link between the orc in the picture and the Dungeon Monsters guy. The one on the front is the one of the preslotta champions, I think.
-
Keen to see more of these! Great start.
-
Great stuff!
-
Brilliant idea for a project and lovely painting. Add me to the list of those who had the book yet never realized they were based on actual miniatures.
-
Thanks :)
Three Goblin Fanatics from the cover of the WHFB third edition rulebook.

Beyond being BEAUTIFULLY painted, the Old Greenies are all new to moi. The never made an appearance in the local hobby store when they were new...most of the older Citadel never did. VERY WELL DONE!
-
A great follow-up to this would be the baddies from the Warhammer FRP cover. One orc - the one with the black plume and axe - seems to appear in both!

Thanks. I suppose it was much harder to find these miniatures in my country too. But in 1984 I was playing with duplo and other toys for small children of 6 years old ;)
I knew miniatures later, thanks to Hero Quest. I suppose it was in 1989-90. :D

Nice idea :) I have the Warhammer RPG book too.
The idea is yours, then you could try to create two warbands (good and bad guys) using these characters :)
...and maybe use them in a warhammer quest or hero quest board :D
-
I wonder if all of those are based on actual miniatures. The good guys are, I think. The ogre is, and the orc with the axe and black plume. And that's Fangor Gripe (the cyclops orc) in the corner with the two scimitars. The great goblins come from here:
But what about the other orcs? The standard-bearer might be based on the armoured orc with bulging eye, scimitar and shield, but he's not that close.

Welcome in my world :)
It could be not easy to find the right miniature from an oldhammer picture.
If you know the artist of the cover and maybe he is on facebook or has another contact somewhere and he is kind too, you could ask directly to him if he used some real miniatures for his cover art ;)
Meanwhile, today I received the Wizard, orc with standard, Orc with axe, Orc with scimitar, shield and javelin (the first two swapped from another oldhammer guy and the other two bought on evilbay for 4,50 each).
Now I only need the Chaos Warrior Daethskar, a really generous gift from a nice oldhammer guy... I hope it will arrive soon, it is about 19 days from his shipping (sometime shipping is slow)
-
The Wizard is done :)
-
That's incredible! :o
The purple robes are sublime. 8)

Great stuff! This lot would make an excellent ASOBH warband; that game (or the dwarf supplement - I forget) has rules for outsize balls and chains, and it's easy to stat up the chaos goblins (Group Fighter for two-head, perhaps, for example).
-
That's put a big smile on my face. That's a fantastically lunatic project and I'm so pleased you're succeeding so well.

Love your project!
-
That is yet another FINE Old Mini that is new to me. He is a BEAUTIFULLY painted creation. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks :)
The orc with axe is done.
-
Lovin' it.
-
Excellent!
Incidentally, it occurs to me that the great goblin behind that fellow in the WFRP painting is based on a misreading of the catalogue illustration - or at least he's acquired the club of the chap next to him. So, although the figure is based on an actual model, there's a slight "Chinese whispers" effect that would make it difficult to replicate without conversion.

Fantasy Project Idea of the Year!
8) 8) 8)
What a great idea and execution!
:-* :-*
It must have both serious fun whilst at the same time quite frustrating, trying to identify them from those line drawings in the old catalogues.
You are cracking along so well with this wonderful idea and I await the next update with much relish.
:D
(For the record: I had no idea that those illustrations were based on actual figures either...)
-
Thanks :)
Fortunatelly I recognized almost all of the characters, just two I'm not sure, then I chose two generic orcs that could be similar (a standard bearer and orc with scimitar).
Here the orc with scimitar (and javelin).
Now I must wait the arrival of the chaos warrior (shipped to me in 27 october, I hope it is not lost during shipping :( )
and I must find a nice orc standard bearer, I was considering the two ones in the last picture I included (somebody have it for trade or sell?).
-
Great work! :D
-
I received the Chaos Warrior Daethskar shipped as a gift from a really nice guy from the Oldhammer trading facebook group (Thanks again for your generosity Michael C. 😏). Then I painted it and included in my "Warhammer third edition" warband. I've finally painted all the miniatures clearly recognizable from the cover and back of the 1987 Warhammer third edition book.
I will add two more miniatures in this warband, another goblin fanatic and a jabberwock, just to complete the army list I'm planning to play with the Advacend Song of Blades & Heroes.
-
Superb!
-
Thanks :)
The last two addition to my warband: a Jabberwock and the fourth Goblin Fanatic.
Then my Advanced Song of Blades & Heroes warband is completed.

Lovely work on the jabberwock - and great colours!
That looks a really good set of profiles for ASOBH.

I was doubtful about the paint scheme for the jabberwock, then while surfing I found this paint scheme and I tried to copy it. ;)
I like ASoBH because I could create any character I want or need in my warband :D
-
That Jabberwock is wonderfully finished.
:-* :-*
I have one of those stored away for when I get the real muse to paint it.
I may well be coming back here for inspiration when I do.
:D
-
Dammit, I've got a Jabberwock and was going to use that picture as reference! I can't do it now because it'll look like I was copying!
Lovely work again, what a great project.

Why not? It will be interesting to see your painted jabberwock too :D
Furthermore, I yet copied the original paint scheme from that picture too ;)

They are just as BEAUTIFUL here as on Tom's...funny how it always works out that way. Your use of colors & brushwork are WONDERFUL. VERY WELL DONE once more!
-
Some pre slotta lesser goblins I painted for my oldhammer games that I Could like to use in this warband.

two of the goblins are painted with the paint scheme of the goblins characters from the cover of the Warhammer RPG

The cover of the old Warhammer rpg is one of my favourite fantasy illustrations ever. I've never seen it all "of a piece" (instead of front/back covers). Thanks for that!
Your goblins are looking great!
-
Two pre-slotta orcs I painted that could be nice additions to the warband:

This is such a great project!

Lovely work on the new additions to the band, that green skin is lovely!

Lovely work again.
The bodyguard with mace is one of my fave miniatures.
