Been hopping between my Victorian/Napoleonic inspired army of IG for 40k (see 'Royal Army of Venus' ob the VSF board) and this force of Greek mythology inspired hoplites which was originally for Fantasy Battle but which I'll now be using for Age of Sigmar.
Although I'm using Greek mythology as a starting point, I decided to give the army a slightly more exotic feel, so will be painting the humans with darker skin and painting the horses and centaurs with a zebra pattern to give the force a more African feel. Good thing about the setting of AofS is that it's basically infinite, so fitting in a force of your own devising is far easier than in the days of WFB-the sky's the limit :) Stat wise I'll be using 'Order'-so mainly elf and human stats to represent the various units.
Still very early days-but here's what I have so far.
-
A test model of one of the archers-
-
And the archer unit done. I'm working on the Guard again now, but I'm itching to get back to this army-so hopefully I'll have more updates to post in the not too distant future :)
-
Wow I love your army ! The ancient feeling deals great with the fantasy one. What is the brand of your humans ?
-
Great Stuff, cant wait to see them all in their painted glory! Love the amazons! Are these mostly wargames factory?
-
Well black greeks is truly on the fantasy side. :D
Love your ideas and will follow your journey.
-
Thanks :) I was partly inspired by a arena scene in gladiator (African archers in gold armour riding chariots into battle :)) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_4RT1qb29E
Yes, the archers are Wargames Factory. The chariots and eagle chariots are Games Workshop, with Wargames Factory Amazons stuck on (I backed the kickstarter so I have rather a lot of these), I have a block of Victrix Athenians for a good core of hoplites and the lion riders are Victrix riders with lions left over from the chariots as mounts.
The centaurs are made from Wargames Factory Amazons and horses stuck together.
-
Absolutely inspired work all round. I'm inlove with your lion riders and now I want to do something similar for my renaissance fantasy minis!
-
Finally got back to this project and made a bit of progress on it. Pictured are a skycutter chariot by GW (with Wargames Factory Amazon crew), Centaurs made from Wargames Factory Amazons and horses mashed together and a Greek heroine by Reaper miniatures.
A mix of Greek and African themes going on to create something new. It's a fantasy army so it's all good :)
-
Wow, zebra dudes and the heroes are ace!
-
Thanks a lot :D
-
Looking very good 8)
-
Fantasy as it should be. I totally love this army.
-
Lovely updates!
-
This is great - a really nice combination of inspirations which has led to something that looks lovely.
-
How cool! I really like the zebra centaurs and the darker skin-tones. Well done.
-
Since last posting I have completed a 2nd flying chariot (which is basically the same as the first) and some 'killer birds' -as I have been calling them. These will be used as super heavy cavalry in 'Age of Sigmar'-counting as 'Concussors' from the Stormast faction. I am now working on a phoenix.
The mounts are dodo toys repainted and the riders are from Hasslefree Miniatures. One of the few companies I've found that supply riders without mounts. Anybody know where I can get any other riders with no mounts? Female Zulu types or Greek style Amazons would be ideal but I'll take any suggestions (riders alone seem difficult to get a hold of and I'm developing quite a stockpile of spare horses as a result).
-
Wonderful project and execution!!
-
Thanks! :D
-
Excellent use of those Libby's :)
-
Thank you-they were nice figures to work with :)
-
those dodo's are awesome :o
-
Nice update - they are wonderfully unique.

Contact Nic at Eureka Miniatures:

They have more than a few miniatures that will be suitable and he may be willing to sell mounts only.
-
Thanks, Von Lucky :D
-
And I meant riders, not mounts. Obviously. There's a few ranges in the 28mm ranges you'll like.
-
Wow, really imaginative and excellent execution! Cool project :-*
-
If you're looking for other sculpts for this, you might take a glance at Crocodile Games stuff along with Megalith Games, both have several good options for your amazon force.
-
Can't believe I haven't seen this thread before, an inspired army.
-
Those dodos are fantastic lol. It's s great looking army.
-
Thanks, guys! :D Yes-I'm waiting with much anticipation to get my hands on some of the new Crocodile Games figures :) Not sure if I've seen the Megalith stuff-I'll check it out (thanks for the tip :)).
Phoenix is done. I'm planning to add some ivy to the plinth but I only just ordered that so I'll have to wait a bit. Next-more centaurs! And some harpies. The phoenix is a toy by a company called 'Safari LTD'. The paint job it came with was actually pretty good (it had translucent orange wings) but I decided I should paint it to bring it in line with the rest of the army.
-
That is stunning. Really nicely done. On a white undercoat?
-
Thanks :D
Black primer(that's what I'm used to-I find black is better for a quicker style of painting as any missed areas still look okay). Painted the feathers with the GW red base coat (Mephiston Red?) and then mixed that with yellow and a bit of white, adding more yellow and white as I went up through the layers.
-
Okay, cool.
-
:o :o
Where's the Phoenix from? It looks fantastic!!
-
The Phoenix is spectacular!
-
Thanks! :) The phoenix is a toy from the Safari range. If you type 'Safari phoenix toy' into Google or Amazon it'll appear :) Not the cheapest toy but cheap my miniature wargaming standards and a very nice sculpt.
-
Really lovely execution. I have wanted to do something like this for years, ever since I saw this book. Glad to see somebody pulled it off.

-
That book looks interesting :) That's the style I'm going for-a combination of Greek culture with an African setting (although it's fantasy so it's neither of these really). I wanted to create something a bit more exotic and strange than a straight Greek mythology army :)
-
That Phoenix looks great
-
Great concept, great design and great job!
Honestly these look fantastic!
-

That cover is exactly what I thought of when I first saw this thread.
-
This is an outstanding army - from the concept to the kitbashing to the painting!
-
Really very nice.
-
Thanks everyone for the kind words and good tips on other lines and books to look at :D
I had my first battle a couple of weeks ago against a legion of undead. It did not go well for me, but it all looked good on the table which is the main thing.
My army was a bit too flimsy and lacking in hitting power. I should perhaps have included the phoenix-although that model is better with a wizard or two around (its' save improves if people cast spells nearby) and I didn't have any spell lobbers ready.
To fix certain deficiencies I'm currently working on some centaur characters (one wizard), more centuars and soon some hoplites that will provide a tough unit that can hold up enemies. I hope to add a couple of hydra as well to improve the armies' hitting power.
Other than army composition I also made a big mistake with my deployment as I set up my archers and general on the left flank-I should really have put them in the center (since in the scenario you didn't know where your objective would be until turn 2 and that unit was my slowest).
I also chose to take the first turn which was a blunder as my archers were out of range of the enemy even after moving. In this game system (Age of Sigmar) you roll off to see who goes first at the start of each game turn after the first. In this case my opponent won the roll off for turn two. Thus he had two player turns in a row, which proved disastrous for my mobile but not particularly resilient units (the centaurs and eagle chariots) who were forced to sit helplessly while the enemy closed in.
Not sure if I'm a fan of that rule. I favor squad by squad activation in general (having your opponent use his entire army while you sit and wait is one of the things I don't like about 40k)-so a game where your opponent will often get to activate his entire army twice in a row whilst you can do nothing is not a plus point. It hurts a fast but flimsy army like the one I was using quite a lot. I need more resilient units to act alongside the mobile stuff.
I love the eagle chariot models but they are pretty weak for their points. I'm hoping they come down a bit when the new 'Generals Handbook' comes out later this year. As they are it's difficult to justify taking them in a competitive game.
So-a pretty disastrous game but I learned a lot-both in how to deal with the enemy and what I need for my army to function in the game system. :) I'd quite like to try a 'Bolt Action' style activation system for this game. Might be more fun.
-
Lovely looking game and good that it also focussed your energy on what to paint next!
-
Thanks! :D Yes-nothing like a good kicking to focus one's mind lol
-
Some lovely work in this thread, including models I'd not previously regarded all that highly - very well done in making such a nice and coherent force out them all. I also really like the phoenix, an especially good find I think. :)
-
Thanks a lot! :D
-
Very nice work! Im looking for wargame factory amazons too
-
Who makes the lion rider figs?
-
I started thinking about your project for some reason today and I wondered if you have seen these antelope riding Amazons coming soon for Godslayer.
Also, Gary Hunt miniatures have these Baboon warriors that might fit in.
-
Sorry for the (very) late response, PaintsByNumbers -the lion rider figs are Macedonian cavalry riders by Victrix and the lions are from GW high elf chariot kits (you get horses and lions-I used the horses on the chariots and the lions to make this cav unit :)).
Thanks for the tip, TheRedGraf-I will have to take a look at those on the website. They look like they'd fit really well :)
I've made a bit of progress on this army so I'll be posting some more pics soon :)
-
More centaurs-I built the unit up to ten models and finished a wizard and a hero :) The wizard is a Reaper model and the hero is from Heresy miniatures.
-
Lovely zebra patterns.
-
Thanks! :D
-
Managed a bit more. Working on some hydra and a unit of 30 hoplites to give my force a bit more resilience and hitting power. All are pretty much prepped for painting and I have 9 hoplites out of 30 painted now. I'll paint the hydra once I get 15 hoplites done to make the ordeal of 30 infantry a bit easier to swallow :) The hydra are by a company called 'Safari'.
-
Finished the last 3 hoplites of the first 15 + the hydra handlers+ bases -pictured below. These ladies are shepherding terribly dangerous invisible hydras. That's what they tell everyone anyway. I'm not sure if I believe them.
-
And the Hydras are done. First time using an airbrush (for the underbellies and patterns on scales) but I think they came out okay :)
-
Okay. I'm a bit awed by your painting. :o
-
One of the many things I love about LAF is now and again a thread pops up I've either missed or forgotten about.
Wonderful stuff!
-
Thanks, chaps-it was mostly just a case of drybrushing and airbrushing and inking-all pretty quick and easy to do :) The airbrush was handy for this sort of thing (skin patterns on big stuff) but I'll stick to regular paintbrushes for most things I think :)
-
Nicely done. And I love how no one questioned your invisible hydras. Or complemented you on them.
-
This is such a cool project. It's the little things like the Hydra's handlers or the Zebra stripes on the centaurs that really steps the whole thing up.
-
After a long period of being distracted by other things I'm finally getting back to this project. I'm using them in 'Age of Sigmar' -formerly as mixed Order, now as a Free City army (the new book fits perfectly with them as I always envisioned them as a city state). I used them in a small battle on Tuesday which went much better than the last time with a convincing win over the forces of undeath (no pics I'm afraid).
I prepped a new batch of minis last night to add to what I've already done. I'll post more pics as I make progress.
-
Very cool stuff!
-
Nice to see this project continuing. Great artwork and genius design concept!
-
Thanks, guys :D I'm fired up by the potentual for the new 'Free Cities' book. I want to do an Asian themed fantasy army next. Lots of Ashigaru and samurai with a few war machines and dragons thrown in :)
-
A great thread...just reread from the start
Keep up the good work
:)
-
Thanks, AKULA :D
Finished the ten archers I prepped bringing my archer total to three units of ten. Next-A zebra drawn chariot (or three).
-
Finally got a chariot finished! 5 more to do o_o
-
Excellent work.

The war chariot is a model of Foundry. It was the chariot of the Queen of the Amazons, which however is no longer in the catalog. It is replaceable with that of the Bronze Age, because it should be of equal size.

Thanks for the info! :D
-
More chariot pics plus I finished the griffon (though I managed to snap him off his base just as I was adding the finishing touched. Those darned GW flyer bases. I think a tougher more flexible plastic would be better vs what they use (hard but brittle).
-
Great work! I love the vision you are creating.
-
Thanks! :D
-
Lovely painting. Sorry about the base.
-
That's okay-I'll figure something out ;)
-
Beautiful!
-
Did some more work, though it's been slow going. Some heavy cavalry and a couple of heroes :D

Victrix iberians for cavalry?
-
I think so but I bought them quite a while ago. The mounts are from the olf High Elf lion chariot kit :)

Congratulations, excellent conversions and decidedly superb painting. We too, for our Greeks (aka HELLENES) of Naran, have foreseen the Mycenaeans on lion and with war chariots drawn by lions. We also predicted the Knights on Pegasus. We have not thought about the one mounted on the Griffin, but we are always in time to fix it, even if we had thought of this animal as more suitable for the Persians.

This is a great army! Well done and very creative!
-
Love what you are doing. Lovely conversions.
I am doing some fantasy greeks at the moment as well, but while you went south i went north - hoplites in the snow.

Thanks, chaps! Those are some magnificent pegasus knights and I like the centaur drawn chariot too. I'm not sure if our centaurs would allow that sort of thing so we may have to be content with horses or zebra for the time being :)
-
Finished another 3 lions and 2 new character models. Next up will be a unit of Amazon hoplites to form the bodyguard of the army general and add some extra resilience to my main battle line.
-
Great stuff! The lion cavalry is epic!
-
Thanks! :D
-
Gorgeous.
-
Brilliant work and painting :- I wonder if you know of Greg Stafford’s Glorantha setting?

Very well painted, congratulations.
We put the Greeks on lions and with war chariots pulled by lions in Fantasy Warriors, for the Mycenaeans, inspired by the famous "Lion's Gate" found in the remains of ancient Mycenae.
Who is the Company that produces them?
Cheers
-
I think that the Lions are from the GW High Elves set which has the option for Lions or horses.
Great work on this project.

What a great looking army!
I've just ordered a load of 15mm Z Range naked Greeks from Museum Miniatures to paint up as a mythic army but I don't think it will be as inspiring as yours!
Keep up the good work
