Title: Argonaut Project - update 30/3
Post by: Eric the Shed on November 13, 2016, 10:00:28 PM
Having finished the Zulu Wars project I have decided to start the next one in the Shed - this time something a bit smaller on the figure count but hopefully just as spectacular...

Jason & the Argonauts

I'll add progress here but most of the journey will be on the blog

for the intro

http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2016/11/the-next-big-project-isjason-argonauts.html (http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2016/11/the-next-big-project-isjason-argonauts.html)

and for part 1  - the first bit of terrain head here

http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2016/11/jason-and-argonauts-part-2.html (http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2016/11/jason-and-argonauts-part-2.html)

thanks for following me on this journey

Great to see you starting this!  I'll be checking Shed Wars for updates. There's so much scenario potential with this genre.

That's a nice piece of terrain to start. Just needs an old man and a few harpies.   :D :D

It looks like you're going for the Ray Harryhausen look, rather than Mycenaean pesudo-historical. Cool beans. It's nice to see mythology done old school.

Release the Kraken!

I'll definitely be interested in seeing what you come up with your rules for this. It really lends itself to heroic actions and scenario driven games. Could this be a possible BLAM 2017 game? I'd be well up for that!

That Temple is brilliant. Shedwork or an existing kit?

Thanks for all the great comments guys...

It is a aquarium piece I picked up in the states last year...it is perfect for 28mm

Could well be a feature at Blam. Once I have some of the figures painted we will be testing the rules

Harpies on order...will need an old man...wasn't he called phineas?

Quote

The king of Salmydessus, whom the Argonauts freed from the Harpies, was named Phineus. Phineas is a Latinization of the Hebrew Pinchas, who was an early High Priest and grandson of Aaron, and whose name derives from the Egyptian Pa-nehasi, meaning 'southerner' or 'dark-skinned'. Now you know, and knowledge is powerful.

Oh look, another nit. Must go pick it...

Great stuff here - also looking forward to more.

Are your skeletons the old Wargames Factory ones? I've always thought they were perfect for the film...

And yes, Phineas (or Phineus, but I think the film calls him Phineas with an "a") is the old man plagued by harpies. Wikipedia tells me that in the film he was played by Patrick Troughton, of all people (in his pre-Doctor Who days). Not sure if that helps with figure choice or not!

And what about Nigel Green (aka Colour Sergeant Bourne) as Hercules? I suspect some fun might be had here.

I'm from Holland so the shipping might be killing if ordering from the US/Amazon...
Garden centers might have some of those and if not I always can check Aliexpress.

Edit: well, at least I can always pick Spongebobs mansion  lol :

I would take the torso of a naked female miniature and replace it where the prow comes up in a tail.  You might have to play around with sizes to get one to match.  If 28mm is too small then look for a 54mm plastic model there are plenty of 54mm slave girls on EBay.

How did you go about removing the rocky base?

Ha! Yes, a very memorable quote! I hope you were doing your best Laurence Olivier impersonation!

;-)

Of course, the Kraken and Larry (as Zeus) were actually in 'Clash of the Titans' (the Perseus story), Mr. Harryhausen's last film and the first one I ever saw (as an 8 year-old at Primary School as part of our Ancient Greeks class project: That Primary School teacher has a lot to answer for!).

Great temple!

 :)

My only problem is that these aquarium models all seem to be made with _very_ heavy resin, so I hate to think what the postage would be for buying one of these things mail order.

Anyway, I'm sure all you Ray Harryhausen fans already know this, but - just for the record - it's worth mentioning that the Phineus and the Harpies episode in 'Jason and the Argonauts' and the two-headed Cerberus scene prior to the showdown with Medusa in 'Clash of the Titans' were both filmed on location at Paestum in Italy at three of the oldest and best preserved Greek temples.

So, budding model temple builders need look no further for construction and / or painting inspiration:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paestum

Some of you may also be aware that the tomb murals at Paestum are an important source for the appearance of ancient Lucanian warriors (although the Wikipedia page only reproduces one example of a cavalryman):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paestum#Painted_tombs

Actually, Italeri make a special model of the Parthenon in Athens.

It's the _intact_ Parthenon of ancient times and I'm not sure what scale it's supposed to be in.

It's probably too small for 28mm / 1:56th scale, but might be alright for 15mm / 1:100th scale:

I shall be nicking some of your ideas.  :D
