After staring at me for a few months I decided to put them out of there misery ...
And base them up and put flags on them...
Spencer Smith Classic Franco-Prussian War Brunswick Infantry...
Very shiny .... and not that easy to photograph :?
All the best... Aly
Yes I know...I am a butterfly
-
Those are great figures however my policy is to not have figures for the same period in different scales. Now with the new year coming there may be changes in policy. :)
-
Are we all not butterflies or Magpies!
-
AKA the 'oh shiny...' syndrome :)
I keep being tempted by the Franco-Prussian disturbance in 28mm. Fortunately other things catch the eye first but one day.....
-
More shininess...
This time French Artillery
-
Those are nice! I like the "old school" Britons look for the Victorian period.
-
Very nice!! The artillery is particularly lovely! :)
-
Beautiful - what rule system are you using ?
Please can we see more ?
-
I intend to use Black Powder...
I will try and take more photo's at the weekend
-
A Bavarian gun ...
I finished basing this last night, this is the only Bavarian unit I have...so far
There are three battalions in the painting que...sky blue uniforms...yellow facings..mmmmm! :-*
All the best. Aly
-
Lovely work again, they look brilliant!! :)
-
A few mor photo's
These are my French...
They are mostly on 50mmx50mm bases and are organised as two stands for a regular battalion...one for small, three for large.
The exception is the cavalry, which is three stands for a regular sized unit...it just looks better.
My force is mostly based on troops from the army of Africa at the moment but adding Imperial Guard an anything else I think is pretty :D
This is my line infantry...
Foreign Legion...three battalions so far
Line Infantry...three battalions also...
-
Next up some skirmish troops...
I have gone for African Light Infantry instead of Chasseurs...
I also have a battalion of Marine Infantry...
Both are based so that they can shake out into skirmish order...
-
Cavalry and Command...
Chasseurs d'Afrique... what else :)
I shall post the Germans later...
All the best. Aly
-
Shiny toys! :D
-
These look better and better. Please add more.
-
So...
On with the show...
You have seen my Brunswick regiment...
Now it is my Hesse-Darmstadt troops...
The Hessian regiments were organised differently from the Prussian troops...they only had two larger battalions ...
I have represented this by making each battalion three stands strong...
I have two regiments of Hessians...
-
Next up we have ...
Jagers...
I have gone for a Mecklenburg Jäger battalion ...
I liked the idea of a blue coated unit rather than the standard green...
These are based so they can shake out into skirmish order.
The cavalry...
Hessian light horse ...in rather nice green tunics...
-
This is a small unit of Prussian lancers... l only have them because they were sent to me by mistake...also I like the uniform
I have depicted them as a scouting unit...
-
Isn't it annoying when you spot a piece of stray static grass after you have made the post... >:(
Never mind... :?
Some command...
The second photo is of two Staddens and a Willie...
There is a joke in there I am sure... lol
-
That's all my toys so far...
I have a unit of French Lancers in the painting que ... I may do them as Guard...in white tunics
I hope you have enjoyed looking at them as much as I enjoyed painting them
All the best. Aly

These are great to see Aly. I am just finishing off my FPW project using old Minifigs S Range. These are partly intended for use in refitting some of the Georland campaigns (georland.blogspot.co.uk) but if I had the money and was starting from scratch it would have been with these Spencer Smith 30s. Lovely to see the old Staddens and Willie too
-
The figures are lovely
Do you shade the painting before the gloss coat?
Are the eyes just dots on the flesh?
I am tempted to dig out my french after this inspiration
Clive
-
Great work, a real joy to see these figures painted up. :)
-
Thank you for your kind comments...
If it wasn't for the Spencer Smith miniatures I would probably be using Minifigs S range or even Scruby miniatures...
With the Minifigs now apparently available through John Cunningham and the Scruby's still available from the States I am tempted to have a couple of units anyway...regardless of the size difference.
Clive...
I am using a very simple technique on these toys...
Base colour followed by a wash... I use Citadel washes and Citadel and Foundry paints.
On dark colours I leave it at that or sometimes give it another coat to get a more even and intense shade.
On lighter colours I highlight with the original colour... I have found that adding some Citadel Lamia Medium to the paint at this stage helps give the effect of blending.
On some of the white belts , plumes and cap lines I have painted them Citadel Palid Wytch Flesh then highlighted with pure white...you could always use a pale grey but I like the warmth of the Wytch Flesh...
Black is....Black
Then everything is given a generous coat of yacht varnish...I use Wilko's own brand ( this is a British household goods store) but any good varnish will do...
I hope this is of some help
All the best. Aly
-
Beautiful and so stylish.
Can we have an ides of the rules you are using and more details of unit organisation ?
All best
JM
-
Curassier...
I am using Black Powder...
Two stands of Infantry represent an average sized battalion and three stands a large, the cavalry are three stands to a unit
Two or three battalions to a regiment...
I am not organising anything on an army level... I am just painting what I like... :D
-
Those are delightful. They may be old-fashioned ( can you still buy them anywhere ? ) but they are actually quite classy sculptures, much better proportioned than most more modern figures. They may be a bit lacking in surface detail, but that's hardly a problem. And very nicely painted , by the way.
-
Tony...
The are available here...
http://www.spencersmithminiatures.co.uk/html/franco_pruss.html
One of my friends ...a none wargamer... describes them as charming...
She is right... they remind me of a childhood I never had... :D
All the best Aly
-
:-*
And please have a few cuirassiers.
-
I have both French and Bavarian cuirassiers in the painting pile :D
-
Aly, I love all of these, but have a soft spot for anything Prussian!
-
I decided to get the toys on the table...
-
Looks great Ally!
-
Great stuff
-
What GW blue do you use on the Prussian tunics Aly?
-
Hi there
The Prussian and French blue is Citadel Kantor Blue with a wash of Drakenhof Nightshade...
And that is all...
If you need it darker...
Another wash... :D
-
Many thanks aly!
-
Table looks brilliant! Looks the part with all those lovely figures gracing it.
-
Here is my latest unit...
French Guard Lancers...
I have decided to do them in their full dress white uniforms... I know they wore Sky blue undress coatees in this war...and got attacked by their own side :( ... But the white is prettier :D
-
They are very nice indeed!! :)
-
Hi there...
I thought I would make some suitably shiny disorder tokens...
Its an explosion from Irregular Miniatures 42mm range...
I think it works rather well... :D
-
I was having a look through some old copies of Miniature Warfare ...as you do
And I found these pictures...
These were probably the the main reason I have a love for the Franco-Prussian war...I remember as a 12 year old drooling over these miniatures...all I know about them is that the picture credit says photo by Andrew Brown...
So if you are still out there Andrew Brown....Thank you.. :D

SOME MORE
-
That's an issue of MW I don't have and have never seen. I was trying to work out what make the figures are. The front infantry unit look like they are Hinton Hunt converted and it looks like there are some Airfix in there. My Wargames interest started with a display game at one of the old Warfare through the Ages shows Derek Sharman put on in Durham: it used Airfix WWI German infantry, French Foreign Legion, French Cuirassiers as I remember. Then picked up again with Steve Shann articles in the glossies with the Foundry FPW range; and now am running with old Minifigs S Range figures. So though I don't remember that cover or article, thanks for the memories!
-
I think you are right about them being converted Hintons and Airfix...
There is a unit of what look like Zouaves in the third picture... I think they may be Rose Miniatures's ...
I must admit that I was tempted to try an recreate the miniatures using Hintons etc...
Fortunately Spencer Smith saved me from that potential maddens :D
All the best. Aly

I'm making progress with my FPW S Range project. It's dual purpose - for FPW and for refighting some of George Alfred Keef's Georland campaigns.
There are some blog posts on both my Vintage Wargaming and the History of Georland blogs:

Prussian Artillery
I've been picking up selected built German HO railway buildings (mostly Vollmer, one or two Kibri) from Ebay. I think they look effective and set the scene nicely
I am intending to use a hex based rules system and am looking at producing an FPW variant of Command and Colours Napoleonics to do this.
I am currently painting 6" hexes 1" deep to use as hills with my Corsec Engineering fleece mat. As soon as I have had the time to produce v1 of the rules variant I should be able to have a trial game or two.
I'm quite excited!
