Title: Roman Army (pic heavy)
Post by: jet on February 15, 2009, 03:00:10 AM
Hey All,

I know ancients aren't the norm around here, but as my main forum, I thought I'd show you guys the finished product.  The army has been based to play Impetus, my new favourite Ancients game.

The entire army arrayed for battle.

Looks like 6mm Baccus figures?

Very nice painting and the bases finish them off nicely  :)

Very nice indeed, especially the bases.

I've always wanted to do an ancients army like this. Do you have any opponents for them?

Actually, my friend has done a Parthian army.  He painted and I did the bases for him.  Obviously, there's lots of heavy and light horse.

Yes indeed, all models are 6mm Baccus.  Thanks for the positive feedback,

Very nicely done. 6mm is a great scale for massive battles (I'm still in love with my Epic 40K), and your work is a perfect example of this. At this scale it'd be easy to make an entire 1000-man legion, something I am working on in 15mm, and 28mm.

Sir, you are a madman  ;)  I tip my hat in your general direction.

Thanks for the compliments,

:o Very nice, my jaw hit the floor when the first picture came up. What are the base sizes?

All bases have 6 cm frontage. The depth varies depending on the unit; skirmishers are 2 cm deep, all other infantry is 3cm, cavalry is 4cm.

Ever since the articles in Wargames Illustarted and talking to Pete Berry at Salute last year I've been thinking about 6mm at some stage, particularly the Great Northern War and Spanish Wars of Succession.

I was going to succumb at Salute this year but instead we are going on Holiday so I'm saved, this year  ;)

I really need to finish off my Napoleonics so I can pick up a Roman army. Was that any particular Baccus army deal or was it cobbled together from seperate packs?

Now that is a very pretty army! I don't usually go a lot on armies that small but you've based it beautifully...

That is indeed a very pretty army. 6mm is a great way to get that massed effect without having to sell a kidney to finance its purchase.  ;)

Everything in the army was pulled from a Warmaster Army pack sold by Baccus, except... the strips of Numidian Horse, and extra unit of artillery.  All in all, if you plan how you are laying out your bases, you can do a 6mm army for Impetus very cheaply.  I would recommend looking at one of their army packs, and counting out how many strips of each unit type are included.  For my force, I went with 6 strips of infantry per base, 4 strips of cavalry for medium cavalry, 2 strips of cavalry for light cavalry, and around 5 or six models for each unit of skirmishers.

I plan on doing Skythians next.  Tons and tons of light horse!

Great job  - hope they fight for you as well as they look. The parthians look great also.
for those of you thinking about 6mm go for it. Buy a few sample packs for that Army you always wanted to and  try them.
IMHO  once you get used to the style you can paint both quickly and effectively

Impressively looking army!

Am still waiting for ply-bases from Fenris to get my Basic Impetus (20mm/1:72) Romans going (parcel apparently lost in the mail  :'(  ). Should get a replacement parcel, soon...

Nice armies. Good work. I have found 6mm a pain to paint. I find my eyes go  o_o I admire anyone who can and make them look good.
