While I've been a long time lurker, I only recently made the jump to joining the LAF. Like a few others, the most recent release from Pulp Alley got me motivated to put some work into finishing up several leagues that, while playable, have made do with just a coat of primer. The first batch to come together has a vigilante crew, a crime circus, and the requisite gangsters and femme fatale:

More to come.

Those look fantastic! :o

Nice paintwork!
-
Very nice painting, some great figures there.
-
One of the best uses of Heroclix figures I've ever seen, and a great brushwork, CONGRATULATIONS! ;)
-
Really nice painting! :-*
LB
-
Lots to like there! Things that caught my eye: the colours on the femme fatale, the ex-puppeteer heroclix, and lots of interesting carnival characters. What a great introduction to LAF!
-
Just superb! :-*
-
wonderful stuff

Nicely done and welcome!
-
Super looking figures.
Love them.
-
Nicely painted! :-*
-
Shame that you waited for too long while these beauties languished, craving for being shown to the world.
-
Really nice :-*
The left and the right mini in the second pic, are those Clix ones?
-
Excelent :o :o
-
Thank you very much! You're all very kind with your praise.
The left and the right mini in the second pic, are those Clix ones?
All but four of the minis began as 'clix, actually. Those specific two were originally the "Henchman" from the Infinity Challenge set and "Chase Stein" from the Hammer of Thor set, both with head swaps.

Great ideas for Pulp Alley leagues! :-*

Thanks! The Agents of the Owl were actually inspired by the Lobster's agents from Dark Horse Comics, particularly after reading The Burning Hand. I liked the idea of a vigilante with a network of common citizens as his agents, much like the Shadow. Darque's Carnivale is something I've been tuning for a while. I still need to come up with a few good options for Minions, but other leagues need more attention right now. Still, half the fun has been coming up with different figures/acts to add. There's also something satisfying about having an interesting villain to run when everyone else wants to play the heroes.
Speaking of heroes, I couldn't resist taking a WIP shot of the next (almost) complete league, John Danger and his Danger Rangers:

Little by little, they're all coming together.

Lovely stuff!

Great stuff! The mini in the middle of the first pic, the one with the owl, ís this also from HeroClix?

Yes, but there's a fair bit of conversion. It started life looking like this:
It's Dr. Mid-Nite from the Collateral Damage Heroclix set. I clipped the legs off right at the top of the boots and the rest of the body separates from the cowl and cape as one piece. Then it was a matter of replacing the boots and head, with some putty to smooth it all out.

Thank you, the new one is way cooler.

Fantastic cast of characters!

Love your conversions. Well done!

It's been a long time since this thread saw any update, and I don't have an excuse beyond the inability to break my lurking habits. In that time I have managed to get some converting, assembling and painting done, finishing some leagues and adding a few bystanders and such to the collection.
So, to start, the leader of the Danger Rangers, John Danger:
And of course, his Danger Rangers:

A potential ally:

And a potential foe:
Finally, a few shady types:

There's a few more that need photos taken, and some more in the paint pipeline, so my next update should be more reasonably timed. Fingers crossed.

Great work!

Damn fine work! I hope we get to see them in action. :D

Not much of an update, but every protagonist needs a wily anti-heroine (or two) to keep them on their toes.

She's from Copplestone Casting's Bolshevik Heroines (http://copplestonecastings.co.uk/prod.php?prod=140) pack.
It's raining in the land of Queen Calafia, so the lighting for taking photos isn't great, but more to come soon.

Thank you.
I've never considered tutorials, since my usual reaction to my own work is that there was probably an easier way. Maybe as a future project?

Despite taking some time off, somehow I managed to slide past the whole of April without posting anything. So just to prove I haven't been idle, here's a new league: the Masked Menace of Baron von Schreck!
Some men have greatness thrust upon them. Some reach out and grasp it by the throat.
The Baron:

His niece and protégé, Serafina von Schreck:
Gregor, the Imperial "Interrogator":

Finally, every great leader needs an Igor. The Baron has the ever faithful Wicht:
There's an Associate still to be painted, along with a loyalist or two to serve as Backup, but that's the core of the league for now. More soon(ish).
-
Where is Igor from? They all look really well done but he is my favourite! Stock figure or some conversions?
-
He's a conversion.

Igor from Horrorclix with a head from a Heroclix Morlock. The arms and gun came from a sprue of Games Workshop Empire Militia.
-
Sorry, I meant Gregor.
Must've autocorrected or something.
But thanks for the info on Igor. He's also awesome.
-
He's also a conversion, with a similar formula. The torso and legs are a Persuader Heroclix from the Legacy set, and the head came from a Two-Face figure from the Unleashed set. The arms are from the same GW Empire Militia sprue I mentioned before. There was a little bit of sanding and putty, but not much, to be honest.
-
Pardon the thread necromancy...
Not really how I spent my summer vacation, but it's been such a long time since I had an update I figured the closing days of summer were as good a time as any. The first two groups are a mix of "Adventure!" types, from the backlog of Copplestone and Pulp Figures I'm slowly making progress through.

This last one is a WIP for a Pulp Alley league, a combination of Heroclix conversions and Copplestone.
Next batch hopefully on a more regular schedule...
-
You do excellent work. Can you tell me who makes the red masked figure in the last picture?
-
Thanks. I appreciate the compliment.
Unfortunately, no one makes that figure; it's a conversion from two Heroclix. The good news is that it's a relatively simple conversion, just a head swap using these figures:
(https://52f4e29a8321344e30ae-0f55c9129972ac85d6b1f4e703468e6b.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com/products/pictures/155012.jpg) (https://52f4e29a8321344e30ae-0f55c9129972ac85d6b1f4e703468e6b.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com/products/pictures/114161.jpg)
For reference, those are the Sandman from the Heroclix Origins set, and Green Lantern from the Unleashed set.
-
Some amazing conversions and paint jobs. Impressive.
-
Some amazing conversions and paint jobs. Impressive.
Thank you, that's very kind praise. The materials Heroclix are made of are pretty forgiving and in the past buying figures in lots was relatively cheap. Pulp Alley is a game with easy setup and a low figure count, so that also allows me to really indulge myself when it comes to converting and painting.
This week I managed to put the final touches on few stragglers from the summer painting frenzy:
More ahead, but making progress.
-
You are a gifted painter. I can never decide if I like clear bases or not, but yours do look good!
-
Incredible conversions
-
Wonderful work. You are a very skilled painter.
-
You get a very nice graduation between the highlights and low lights, is that a wash/glaze you are doing to achieve it?
Excellent as before.
-
Thank you all for the compliments. I appreciate it.

I've never had much success learning techniques like wet blending or loaded brush. So I use what used to be called "layering" or I guess is now called "glazing"*: thin layers atop one another again and again. It's slow, but gives me results that I'm happy with.
*Which is what it was called when I was first learning to oil paint. Go figure.
-
It's always a treat to see your work! Well done! :D
-
Gorgeous :-* :-*
-
Fantastic painting.
-
Thanks, everyone.
A few more models made it through painting and basing as I slowly progress through filling out some old leagues and building up some new ones.

I have to admit that every time I look at the Pulp Figures hypnotist on the left I can't help thinking "Hey buddy, ya wanna buy a watch?"
-
Wonderful brush work.
-
Wonderful conversions and painting. You've created some great characters.
-
Wow! My new favourite log on the whole forum! I've loved the Horrorclix range for a long time (it's a shame they're no longer producing or adding to the range!) and I've got a lot of miniatures from it in my Pulp/Horror/Fantasy collections but you've really opened my eyes to the massive potential in the Heroclix range too! I've converted and repainted a few Heroclix but I've normally just stuck to weapon swaps (an often poor part of some of the otherwise fairly decent sculpts, with the extra bendy swords and guns that seem to be the norm with the cheaper plastic figures) but you've got me looking at the bag of misc. heroes and villains with a new eye! I've just been on eBay looking for some job lots too!
Really really inspiring stuff! I love the themes of the Leagues (I normally paint up all sorts and then pull them together for warbands/gangs etc. but I love your themed groups! Especially the one inspired by Lobster Johnson's relatively mundane crew! That's definitely something to consider :) I especially love the Sandman conversion - a great character in his original form but taken to a new level with the domino-masked head of Green Lantern! On a sidenote, have you read any of the Sandman Mystery Theatre books? Definitely worth a look for pulp goodness with a more grounded flair!
Also - do you have any other project logs up online? I'd love to see your other stuff prior to these!
-
Wonderful brush work.
Wonderful conversions and painting. You've created some great characters.
Really really inspiring stuff!
Thanks for the high praise, guys.
The whole converting Heroclix bit started with looking at a mountain of duplicate figures and wondering what could be done with them. Earlier sets actually had a decent amount of detail to the sculpts under the layers of the factory paint, so the first miniature I converted for Pulp Alley was really just careful stripping and a repaint. After that it was a hand swap and repaint and then another—and suddenly I was off to the races.
My approach has changed over time, though. Initially, I was focused on getting finished leagues on the table, so it was just more efficient to build around a specific theme or "borrow" an idea from somewhere else and get to chopping. Eventually I started piecing together characters friends and I had invented; John Danger, for example, is a character I played in an rpg years ago and always wanted a figure for. Now it's a little of Column A, a little of Column B, where I look at art for ideas and at figures for parts that might come together into something interesting. A spare Sandman is a suit, pistol and cape, and Green Lantern is a mask and hairdo—and it works, even if it doesn't exactly match the inspiration.
I have read Sandman Mystery Theatre. I'd say it pushes more strongly toward mature, political, psychological and horror themes than adventure, but it can be mined for the look and feel of the era. And the design for the Sandman was fantastic.
No other projects online, but that just means I can focus on this one. ;)
-
Sandman Mystery Theatre is a wonderfully twisted series.
-
I love the cover from Thrilling Tales, and a not-Sandman appears on the next page too!
I pulled out my bag of Heroclix and got a couple of job lots in the post that looked promising! I'm going to have to "borrow" some of your ideas from the Carnie band!
How do you go about stripping the paint from them? That's always been really difficult for me!
-
Also, I'm also normally in the "not keen on clear bases" camp but yours look bloody brilliant!
Any plans for terrain/objective markers currently?
-
How do you go about stripping the paint from them? That's always been really difficult for me!
Short answer: I live dangerously and use acetone.
Dipping a cotton swab (e.g. Q-tip) into some acetone and "wiping" the paint off the mini is how I do it nowadays.
HOWEVER, it does require some consideration before you use it. The fumes aren't good for you, so use it outside. You don't want it on your skin or in your eyes, so get some gloves and eye protection. I apologize if that comes off as lecturing, but the first time I used acetone on a heroclix I took a toothbrush to a damp mini and it spattered everywhere and came that close to landing in my eye. Provided you're careful though (and not an idiot like I was), acetone works very well on heroclix.
Caveat emptor: It can melt the details off of the older material from the early heroclix and horrorclix sets. Generally, the new stuff they use holds far less detail but is much more resistant. If you're worried about that, try using nail polish remover. It contains acetone as well and while it is much slower, it is generally safer and far more forgiving (see precautions above). I accidentally left a figure soaking in nail polish remover for hours and aside from being extremely rubbery (until it dried), it was fine.
Any plans for terrain/objective markers currently?
Yes, actually. But with the holiday/end of the year crunch, they've been put on hold for a while. I'll get back to them.
-
Ah, okay then! I already use acetone to strip ‘clix, but as you say, it’s living dangerously :) I did buy some nail varnish remover a while back (the acetone one, there are some non-acetone ones in the UK and they’re crap for our purposes) and the smell of it was worse than normal acetone!
-
Great looking figures. Really nice incorporation of Heroclix.
-
Just a quick update now that I've sorted out the new laptop:
Great looking figures. Really nice incorporation of Heroclix.
Thanks! I'm getting back to a few conversions I'd left half-finished, so I should have more ahead.
In other news, I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of the yet to be released Pulp Alley figures and got some paint on it:
Desperately needs better lighting, but she painted up nice.

Lovely work on the ape!

“Elizabeth, chère, I am afraid that I can only give you stories of this man. Rumors, nothing more.” Rene slid the photograph back across the table. The French journalist sat smoking beside a young, striking brunette.
“The mask makes identification impossible. There are many stories, however. He was a political prisoner, made into a monster. He was born disfigured, a giant from birth. He is not one man, but actually several acting under one alias. He was a legionnaire who discovered a strange elixir in a lost civilization.” Rene waved his cigarette in the air dramatically.
The younger correspondent leaned forward conspiratorially. “I heard he was Algerian, orphaned and raised on the streets. Mais, none of my sources could confirm this tale.”
“You must understand the one thing that is true about him, chère,” Rene continued. “This man is not like your American gangsters, content to fight over money. Over territory. Those men with him, do you really believe they are undisciplined Apaches? He is not some mere criminal."
The Frenchman paused to drag at his cigarette, exhaling with a sigh. “Bête Noir—he is a supercriminal.”

An excellent new league. I see one Pulp Figure Dangerous Dame. What manufacturer are the other guys?
-
Thanks!
The other minions are built from one sprue of Wargames Atlantic's Partisans, with American Marine arms for the grenade thrower. Bête Noir himself is a conversion from a heroclix Drax figure with head and hand swap.

-
The Partisans look useful for a few periods. The headswap on Drax is so well done it totally fooled me. lol
I will have to order the Partisans now.
-
I’ve seen several folks using those partisans, I should probably get some too. Great work on the conversion and painting. Love the dialogue too.
-
Keep churning them out - they look great! Seeing your figs, I wish I had gone with the clear bases, now...

-
Thanks guys, I appreciate it.
Wargames Atlantic's Partisans are a nice set, and I expect to use them more in the future. The clear bases weren't actually my first choice. I switched to them when I blunted my holepunch trying to make some super-inviso bases, but over time I've grown to really like them.
Now, time for a little foolishness:
