Title: What's your favorite Palanquin model?
Post by: Alxbates on December 01, 2016, 10:47:47 AM
I'm thinking about adding a palanquin to my range of figures, but planning out the construction is proving to be complex!

I'd like to see what's out there already, maybe I can take some cues from what works (and what doesn't work!) about currently extant models on the market.

So... what's your favorite/least favorite palanquin model?  What do you like (or dislike!) about it?

The old Citadel Realms of Chaos Nurgle Palanquin.
A lovely hefty bit of lead, a characterful sculpt with a choice of riders, and of course held aloft by swarms of Nurglings when they were still mischievous imps.

EDIT For picture lifted off Google Images...

I will paint mine one day..  o_o

Other than that, there was a great Aztec or Inca one whose manufacturer eludes me for the moment - Outpost maybe? It was really nicely sculpted but the it basically looked like four big lads taking an old guy for a walk in his bath. Made me laugh, anyway.

The Outpost one is a dead ancestor, isn't it? Thus the old guy! ;)

Personally, I like the old Ral Partha wizard palanquin with the monster bearers.

Yeah, "Evil Lord on Litter with Bearers". I wish I still had that one; it was great. The thing that must have been a corpse with its arms tied to the bat-wings on the chair back was extremely creepy, and the pose of the lord was perfect. The monsters reminded me of the muppet "Sweetums".

The most recent palanquin miniature I have is the Mirliton version of the Grenadier "U.L. Skeleton Master", with the pot-bellied skeleton and four of two different bearers. Those Andrew Chernak Fantasy-Lords-era skeletons are favourites of mine, except this palanquin has a big skull chair-back on it, which I think is pretty silly. I always imagined skeletons would just use the same implements they would have used when they were alive, not that they would ever spend time making new ones, especially putting skeleton-designs on them to show off how skeletony they are.

The Dozing Dragon painted this from my Tekumel range...

Here are the parts...

One has to drill out the base to hold the 100mm wire spears I supply as poles.

The Dark Fable Senet players make good palanquin riders.

I did have a scheme to get some palanquins made but am currently too low on funds to pursue it. :-(

Did it look something like this Incan mummy litter?

http://www.kb.dk/permalink/2006/poma/258/en/text/

There was also the Incan Pillcu Ranpa ("Scarlet Litter" - it was for battle so it didn't have a canopy):

http://www.kb.dk/permalink/2006/poma/335/en/text/

And the Incan Quispu Ranpa ("Crystal Litter"):

Other Andean and Meso-American cultures had litters for their great leaders, both living and dead.  The Chimu/Sican people of the Peruvian coast took their kings to their final resting place in this fashion:

I started making one for Agueybana (a Cacique from Puerto Rico - in the Caribbean) a long time ago.  I have no idea which of my countless bins in the attic has that unfinished project:

PS.  I did find the link to the Outpost Pillcu Ranpa litters again, among others:

Lots of good stuff here folks - thank you!  Keep it coming!

The old Necromancer being carried by beast men (demons, maybe?) is one that I just picked up off of Ebay.  It was nicely painted, but sadly arrived a bit beat up.  I'm gonna have to repaint parts of it:

But I love it.  It's exactly the sort of thing I'm thinking of having made.

I'll admit to a weakness for the Slann Mage Priest models, whether carried by Suarus Temple Guards:

Or the more recent levitating version (which is maybe not a palanquin technically - do they need bearers?)

I even like the mummified Lord Kroak sculpt:

There's also these monstrosities from GW, again only sort of a palanquin:

I'm pretty partial to this old Grenadier one.  I'm not sure if it counts as a palanquin, though.

I quite like the grenadier barbarian chief on a shield (not really a palanquin either).
