Happy New Years All! Am starting to build a Chinese hutong for my Back of Beyond and 2nd Sino-Japanese War gaming, and just finished the first block of buildings today:

Fantastic building; very characterful!
-
Very nice! Is that a bead being used as a planter? What sources did you use for architectural inspiration?
-
Love it! Really nice build.

Thanks Everyone!

Yep, picked up a bunch of beads to use as pots:

For inspiration, I've used Jimbibbly's work and photos of Hutongs on Google Images:

I am very impressed, what a great place to adventure.
-
Stunning. Looks more like a computer rendering than a model. That's amazing. :-*
-
A lovely piece of real estate!
-
Really really nicely done! The 'block' rather than just a single building is a wonderful idea, as is the simplicity of design which still captures the right look so well. Will visit your blog hoping to see what is behind the facades.
-
A fantastic pice of scenery. :-* :-*
-
Simply wonderful! :)
-
Thanks again Everyone!
The 'block' rather than just a single building is a wonderful idea
Thanks Mike! Since I'll most likely have to transport everything to play, I thought blocks would be less fuss than having to set up and break down a bunch of buildings every time.

Lovely. Lovely, lovely, lovely. The peartrick is brilliantly executed to. Post ike this makes me sometimes think we are just about done here at LAF. :-)
-
Looks great! :-*
-
Seriously drool worthy!
Need to do some buildings for a Sandpebbles type game. These are inspirational.
-
I can't add much to what's been said, this is wonderful.
I am a big fan of paper builds and I think your decision to use a textured roof makes all the difference really lifting it.
Thanks for posting is very inspirational.
Cheers
-
Outstanding buildings.
Love what you have built. :-*
-
Absolutely stunning. Wonderfully imaginative, superb attention to detail and brilliantly executed. Well done! :-* :-* :-*
-
My oh my but that looks good. If only it was available commercially, my credit card would be in action already. :o
-
Really beautiful work!

Hi All,
I just got back from Hong Kong and used the opportunity to grab pics of more shop signs for Chinese buildings:

Hi Chris
Better late than sorry, I saw this when you 1st posted but was travelling with no great download allowance and have only just got back to it.
Your paper builds have been a great inspiration and I have followed your lead doing some western buildings, which are greatly enhanced by textures and posters from the net as you have done.
So thanks for the further link to theses bits and pieces, I do hope to use some of them in a pulp town set in S.W. Asia or maybe Africa that will have a small Chinese community.
Great Blog as well.
Cheers

X2!

So, I know I've been neglecting this project for a long time, but I've finally created as second block of buildings:

Well worth the wait! Love the shop houses!
Lon
-
I like those - lovely!
-
Superb! I really like your attention to detail. Those stacks of newspapers next to the news stand look great - a nice touch.
-
Another set of excellent buildings.
Great "how to" on your blog.
-
Very nice work! How did you colourise the periodicals image?
-
Thanks All! I colorized the periodicals and Coca-Cola sign using the color function in Photoshop instead of the normal paint application.
Chris

Where is my list of superlatives which haven't already been used when I need it? :o :o :o :o

I know Sir Rodney, someone stole my thesaurus' and I can't begin to find the words to describe how I feel.
-
Incredible!!!....Wow!
-
Full of character.
Wonderful!
:-* :-*
-
Thanks again everyone!
-
Brilliant characterful builds! I never would've guessed they had printed paper textures, and I finally know where to get the roof tiles for my Japanese building's too :)
-
Absolutely amazing. Your work is a source of inspiration. :-*
-
Crikey that's some brilliant scenery!
-
Suuuuuuperb! Beautifully executed. Hats off fella!
-
I may have to revise my position on print out scenery. These houses are *good*!

Lovely, brilliantly conceived and built, and totally evocative. Happy gaming with these beauties. My experience is a great building makes for a great game. Good work fella!

Thanks for the additional feedback gents!
I've managed to knock out another building before the holiday break. This is one of the Asian shops (variant 5) from Dragonfrog Games:

Very nice - they all have great character and already will be a beautiful looking table.
-
Another great looking building :-* You are a terrible influence on me. My wife is going to hate you lol lol
Lon
-
Thanks Gents! Sorry about that Lon. If it makes you feel better, I don’t think my wife is going to be happy once she realizes how many kits I bought.
Chris
-
Swoooooon.....
-
Getting on a bit of a roll. Here's the next building from my Dragonfrog Games purchase. It's a mash up with parts from two kits:

Lon
-
That's a no good gin joint I'd happily hang out in. Well done fella!
-
Loving it mate, you have done a cracking job
-
Thanks Gents!
-
Incredible work. You've very successfully sinocised the designs, leaving not a single trace of Southeast Asia!
Also, any chance you could rework your blog settings to allow those without a Google account to comment directly?
-
Very nice!!!
-
Thanks again.
Hang Tuah, I'll try opening up the comments again (previously had a lot of issues with spam posts on the blog) and see how it goes.
Chris

It's only been a little over a year, so I thought it was time to finally add another building to this project lol
This one is a ruined building with a fortified emplacement:

As usual, more details and pics on the blog.

-
Love your builds Chris! :-* :-*Your blog is very instructive.
-
Your original builds were my inspiration to build a printed textured western town and I downloaded all the textures you posted to do the same for somewhere in SE Asia.
I got no where with it and for some resson thought your blog was dormant. Seeing Lon's comment here highlighted it again.
Thanks both and excellent work Major.
Cheers
-
Super job!
-
Thanks Everyone!
Yep the blog is still running, but I spent 2020 mostly working on figures and vehicles. I'll probably get more terrain built this year, so at my current pace I'll likley have a full table's worth ready by the next pandemic. ;)

Added another shop to the collection

Thanks! Glad to know people haven't gotten bored with the thread.
Good grief no!
Just envious of what you've achieved.
Please keep it up.
-
Yes, very happy to see new additions.
-
Excellent work, as per usual!
-
These buildings are awesome looking. I'm jealous!
-
Nicely done :)
-
I'd forgotten how much good stuff there is on thgis thread. o_o
-
Really excellent work. :-*
-
Thanks again for all the comments! I managed to knock out another one over the weekend. Sadly, I had to use an inkjet printer rather than my normal laser printer, so the texture isn't as vibrant as usual. However, I think it will still look ok on the table:

Once again, your blog has some really good info. I have a similar project coming up and this is helpful. Oh, and another great improvement of an already nice building. I particularly liked the shot with your Dragonfrog shophouses in the background.

Thanks!
