I'm going to be all about the hard science.

Flying pig cannon rocket launcher for my Christmas Civil War universe (same world I built my last Build Something entry for).

Nice to see continuation, this will become a great tradition for you :)
Over here the saying is about flying cows though... :D
-
Interesting and good to see your own theme running through :)
cheers
James

In real life, of course, pigs didn't fly until 1909:
-
Interesting!
Apparently there was plans to have pigeons in bombs to act as the first 'guided' bomb. The plan was the bird would correct the bombs trajectory on the way down from inside by pecking paddles for different directions, thus steering it to its target! :o

lol
It sounds as if you got some interesting substances for Christmas, mate.
;D ;)

It's on the Internet - it must be true :D - Project Pigeon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Pigeon)

Nearly as mad as the incendiary bats supposed to be released to attack Japan, with all the wooden buildings
-
this is an unbelievable idea , but a good one!

Clearly I'm procrastinating, so much so I built this on Sunday instead of starting my build:

Afghan donkey cart like this one:

However, I finally started tonight.
Plan:
Materials:
Build is broken down to three stages:
1. Rocket/pig/goblin rider;
2. Ramp; and
3. Tower.
I'll see how much I can get built in the next 2-3 weeks before I start painting.
Start of the rocket:
Next stage is glue down the pig, and use Green Stuff to blend in the repositioned legs to the body and the pig to the rocket. Not sure if I'm goin to sculpt bulging eyes or not.
-
Mental! :o
-
:-*
-
Brilliantly mental, you just have to love it!
:-* :-*
Bulging eyes are a must.

Bulging eyes are a must.
:D
What in Cthulhu's Unspeakable Name is that man doing to that cow, and why do you have a model of it? :o
Also, the goblin-pig-rocket looks like it's going to be properly goblinish, absurd, and awesome. I look forward to seeing it progress!
-
The plan alone is already good enough! lol
-
Certainly bonkers ;D
-
lol
I wanna see this finished!
-
Slowly moving along.
Tried several different cardboard triangles until I was happy with the size and shape (making sure it would fit into my storage solution for it when it was finished):
Size is about 110mm x 330mm x 315mm. Spent the last few days in my free time cutting various coffee stirrers into various lenghs (normal sized one and the long skinny ones) and then "weathering" them with a knife and file. Knife to chamfer the edges and file to wear the short ends. Then used the shape I had decided on as a guide, gluing the stirrers in a random, goblin like fashion:
After a while I had finished the left and right side, with enough stirrers left over for the front triangle (to be built near the end when I've painted the sides):
Next stage is to tie bits of nylon string around some of the beams, then cover them in enough super glue for SI to be proud of.
Over the weekend I hope to start and maybe finish the sculpting of the pig.
-
Haha, can't wait to see this finished! lol
-
Finished sculpting the pig this morning.
Glued down the body and legs:
Used Green Stuff to fill the gap between the legs and between the belly and the rocket:
Started to sculpt the bulging eyes, but I realised he was smiling too much (and I don't like cruelty to animals, this dude's a willing pilot), so the bulging eyes morphed into goggles:
Finally, I had a little Green Stuff left over so I gave him a little tuft of hair (blame it on current events that was on in the background):
I think I need to name him - I'll call him Trumper, the Hogfather's fifth pig. Realise now I could've built a flying sleigh for this Build Something. Dammit!
Painting-wise I think I'll go with black and pink to hide some of the sculpting (I only use Green Stuff to fill gaps, etc) and the tuft will be a bright orange ;)
Still undecided on including a rider, and if so who that will be (was going to convert a goblin, but might make it a snotling instead).

To be accurate to his, um, namesake, shouldn't Trumper be orange with dyed-blonde hair? Oh, and white rings around his eyes for some reason, but the goggles might hide that.
Looks great, the proper goblin engineering of the launch ramp is awesome.
-
Those goggles are awesome. That's one happy pig. :)
-
Thanks guys. Yeah - blonde tuft, but I can't bring myself to paint an orange pig.
The tower (if I get it done) will have aerials/flags and act as an observation post. Following my theme they'll probably be pulled from this Google images search:
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=soviet+christmas+rocket&hl=en&biw=2144&bih=1059&site=webhp&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiIyK2gstLRAhUJw7wKHXyaBKsQ_AUIBigB
Also, the rocket will not be artillery now, but in game I'll use it as an observation aircraft of sorts. I mainly blame DeafNala for this craziness.
-
Those goggles are and genius touch! lol The pig also has a great contented look now as well! Was the card just for size before? I take it that won't be used anymore?
-
Correct - just for determining the overall size and angles (it was my third or fourth cut out).
Original idea was having the hypotenuse as the base, but after playing around it looks better this way. The sides will also be splayed out so an isosceles triangle will be created on the front facing.
-
lol
The goggles look great, keep going, I really want to see this once it's painted up, in all its glory.
-
Goggles! 8) :D lol
-
Hilariously good (in a good way)!! 8) lol 8)
-
Built the base for it this evening. Slowly getting there.
Left hand side:
Right hand side:
The coffee stirrers are there as height guides for when I plaster, and for the frame to have somewhere to rest on/glue to the base to. The card box will be the base for the detachable tower/flag pole/observation post. The pig rocket in the background has received fins and a nose cone.
Close up of the rocket:
Might still add some Green Stuff to fill joins/add rivets. Not sure yet. Still undecided on extra riders. Thinking of two snotlings to be like these guys:
Base with plaster:
(Really not exciting.)
Decided to add a smoke trail to the rocket:
Next step is the Green Stuff to the rocket, cover the smoke trail with PVA so I can paint it and start building the tower. Painting will probably start mid week. So glad there's a 4 day weekend coming up!
-
lol good stuff! Express bacon delivery!
-
Brilliant!
Love the goggles, they add to the hilarity of the whole idea.
:-* lol :-*
-
lol good stuff! Express bacon delivery!
I think with the exhaust trail coming out of the back, it should be called smoked bacon!
-
Added more Green Stuff. Can definitely tell I don't sculpt at all, but this contest has pushed me out of my comfort zone and nudged me to try it, so I'm happy I'm expanding my skill within the hobby.
I used an old brush (pulling out all the bristles) to get a sculpting tool to do the rivets:
I think it looks okay (I have no idea why that photo is off centre - I blame the eve of a looong weekend :D).
Also found two snotlings to fly with my pig, they're not being helpful to each other:
The angle's a little off - but the back guy is really clinging on for dear life. The PVA glue in the smoke trail is taking a little long to dry.
Think I'll be painting by Friday (and maybe I'll get the tower done, we'll see).
-
I love this! :-* What about sculpting flames on the end of that goblins club? As if he just lit it?
-
I have the same goblins Wirelizard is using for his build, and one of them is holding a torch. I was going to base him on the launch ramp's base, but I think I'll keep him based singularly now.
-
Love the idea and the execution
lol
-
Thanks. Have started to paint, so this might be the last photo for a while (depending if I think I can get the tower done in time).
Bits held together with Blu-Tack as it'll be easier to paint in parts.
The rocket will be sperate, and I'll glue a rare-earth magnet to it so I can alternatively attach to a flight stand.
-
Love it! :-* :-* :-*
-
Fantastic!! :D
-
That is awesome!
No straps to hold Tromper to his ride? Wouldn't want flat ham after he fell off, would we?
-
lol This looks great. The pig looks like he will enjoy the flight at least, if not the end... :D
-

Yeah, I'm going to add some pegs (like on a motorcycle) for each trotter.
-
Ridiculously nice. At least there is a good chance there will be some bacon along the way.
-
That is so cool! I love the competition going on here.
-
Great.
Every time I see images of your progress it makes me smile. Thank you.
Tony

A definite 'feel good' entry! Brilliant stuff! :-*

A brilliant, quirky smile inducing entry. 8) :-* ;D

Oh, yes!
I cannot help grinning whenever I look at the pictures.
:D :D
-
Thanks guys, much apprecriated and that it's generating positive vibes.
This year is definitely running at a high standard, but like the rest of LAF, it's pushing me on in a good way.
-
Roll on February so we can see this and all the other great entries! :o
-
Hahahaha, that is so awesome! This will be epic 8)
-
looks wonderful
-
I really want to see this one painted 8) :D :-*
-
Thanks guys.
Over the last few days I have painted the launch ramp and the base. Will glue and flock its components together by Friday. Unfortunately I got distracted gluing an Epic army together over the weekend :/ so a little behind (remembering I still have to build the tower - but I think I can fudge a short term solution if I run out of time).
Glued the pegs (old nails in some holes I drilled) in tonight, along with covering the whole smoke trail in supaglue (as the PVA wasn't creating a rigid enough form):
Things are slowly coming along. I'm still impressed by you loonies that have managed to put in 100+ hours into your own builds already.
-
Brilliant!
8) 8)
And I am still smiling....
:D ;)
-
I love that the pig is smiling :)
-
Yeah, he saved his bacon as it were with that smile - instead of an artillery rocket, it became an observation aircraft of sorts. If I had the time I could have made it an attack aircraft. I'd call it the Warthog.
ba-boom-oink.
Thank you, thank you. You've been a great audience I'm here all week. Try the pork.
-
Am nearly done with assemblying and painting the ramp.
The rocket is half undercoated (brushed black paint into the bits I know the spray undercoat will miss). I really need to get basic colours today (not much time for the hobby during the week).
I also started on the tower, photos aren't a great reflection of what it looks like:
It stands about 21cm tall and will need ladder rungs for the bottom half (the supaglue-stiffened rope is just for climbing the top half) and sheet metal panels for the crow's nest.
-
Love the flying pig Von Lucky!
-
Thanks. Was just spraying on the matt varnish. Stupid thing falls. Grrr - will need a little touch up paint before I take photos and then submit.
-
All painted, photos taken - just need to sort and create final image.
Here's the rocket before painting:
Good luck to all that are in the final push to the finish.

-
Very nice. Another awesome entry.
-
Thanks, but after a busy week at work I didn't have the time nor energy to complete the tower. Did you get the handler sculpted and it all painted (I see you've submitted - well done)?
But it will be done in the next few weeks as it'll only take a few quiet hours. I have definitely enjoyed this, but have decided LPL will be too much to take on in a few weeks as there's a few things I have to concentrate on for tournaments/game days.
-
Na didn't get it painted but submitted anyway. Handler was completed enough. I was going to do a backpack but it is fine(ish) without it.
