Hi all,
First crack at this and I was struggling for inspiration.
I like tanks... so flight and tanks means one thing: Flying Tank.
I mostly like WW2 and Post WW2 and a lot of my stuff is Soviet.
It also happens that the Soviets managed to make a tank fly.
The Antonov A-40: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_A-40
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a1/AntonovA40.jpg/300px-AntonovA40.jpg)
So first plan is build the tank, then cut/sand wings from styrofoam and bodge the two together... :D
That is the plan anyway! Sounds simple when put like that :o
I've got a fair bit of experience building tanks but my plane building is limited!
I hope to get my drawings sorted tonight - Can I start yet?
TTFN

Great stuff :)
No starting until the 9th though please :)
cheers
James

Make sure you make a separate master of the T-60. I don't think anyone makes one in 1/56 at the moment.
Cracking idea btw.
-
This might be handy for references:

-
Lovely idea Rich, as soon as I saw the title . I thought of course, who else would.
Look forward to seeing how you get on.
Mark.
-
Cheers all,
I'll gather materials instead. OK that's done...
Looks like I'll have to finish the Centurion first afterall... ;D
Will see about the T-60 as a master.
It means a different construction if I go that route and it's a bit more work. (Seperate tracks usually)
Plan is standard build for the hull - laser cut wheels and tracks, plasticard hull, fiddly bits for detail.
The wings will be styrofoam hot wired then sanded and covered - not confident about that bit though!
I suspect the hull will need filling with lead to keep it on it's tracks...
-
Great idea! 8)
-
that thing will be big!!
-
Very cool! 8)
-
It's not that big, the wing span is in the order of 320mm at 1/56
-
I was going to make the wings out of foam... but now I might make a built up wing with ribs and spars and so on... might be a step too far though....!
-
might be a step too far though....!
Not around here, you are in good company
:)
-
Rich,
I wouldn't worry about that,(I've just ordered 1800 nail art beads for rivet heads)
-
lol OK I'll have a go at a built up wing then :)
-
Excellent
As a fair few of us can turn out a commercial model. We might as well make this fun. Not just 'job and knock.'
-
I want to make a start... ;D
Built up wing will be attempted.... might not work... but I'll have a go!
-
Can I start yet?!? ;D
-
No ;D
lol
Tomorrow morning :)
cheers
James
-
Boo!
-
Yup ;D
-
I'm there now, can I start?

(All the best Rich, will be watching this one with intertest.)
-
Thanks but that's not fair! I'm drinking gin instead...
-
I'm there now, can I start?
Nope ;D
GMT dear boy, GMT ;)
-
Get Moving Tubby?
I know, 20:00 my time (later for beefcake), but gets us extra time at the end (if deadline is 9:00 GMT).
-
So brakes are off...
Hull structure done

Tracks are going to be a particular pain as they are tiny... and the turret is a mess of angles too...
Then onto wings :D
-
A pleasingly mad project, looking good so far - considered making it an R/C aircraft (just think of the confused looks you'll get)?
-
Just for scale: :o

Riveting stuff!

Pondering the built up wings... and I've a backup plan.
Built up wings are a pain to get right... so I might revert to foam and hotwire!
-
Will foam not be too brittle? BTW how do you do your rivets?
-
Foam will be fine when it's covered in doped cloth ;)
Rivets... are a trade secret - but I'll let you in on it!
Swiss graining tool used for gem setting; a set of 16 costs about £10
To start slightly roughen the surface you are going to add the rivet to.
Mix up a blob of greenstuff, you need enough to grip easily in your fingers. I use more yellow than blue to make it sticky.
Place the blob onto the area covering the rivet location and lightly press down.
Moisten the end of the tool (lick)
Use the beading tool to push through the blob and press onto the surface.
Rotate the tool and move it in an orbit (so the edge of the graining tool cuts through the greenstuff)
Remove the tool.
Pull away the blob.
Now you either have a nice raised rivet or a rivet stuck in the tool. My hit rate was about 60%...
With patience you can get some really tiny rivets like the hinges here:
You can also use them to make recessed rivets: just push into the surface and orbit it to cut the surface so t leaves a circle or if you push harder it leaves a recessed dome:
Note free handing the rivet spacing is not a god idea! It's really hard to get them aligned properly and really obvious when you bugger it up! Not for those with OCD...
-
Amazing work
You do know it is six weeks not six days for this competition?
:D
-
Tracks will take a while... plus I'll get distracted by shiney thi.... oh new stuff in the post!
-
Thanks for that Rich!
Is that first pic your current BSC build? :o
-
The big one above is the A-39 Tortoise form a while back!
This is my BSC current state:

Turret and rivets...

Running out of excuses not to tackle the tracks...
-
Dunno what's going on but the rivet hit rate tonight is about 20%... >:(
-
That looks bloody marvellous! You sir are a master craftsman.
-
That's amazing -- I was just contemplating what to do for rivets, too! I have been scouring the hobby stores, looking at beads which might fit the bill....

Fiddly tracks next I suppose... ::)

Thanks all!
Fiddly tracks next I suppose... ::)
This will be interesting 8)

Measured up before work and it's no good, the undercarriage has to be remade - it's too wide!
I'd made the wheels 3mm thick and they should be thinner - I realised when I measured up the tracks.
The inner edge isn't a problem but the outer edge is.
Fortunately being laser cut I can burn a new set of parts in a few minutes.
Tracks are going to be 'interesting' they are 5mm wide which is fine but they have prominent guide teeth that need to be added.. 2 per track link... bu hand....
I can't think of any other way of doing them without casting (and I'm not going that far!)
Hey ho...
-
BAckup plan for the wings has arrived. A chap at work has a CNC hot wire cutter and he's made me some foam cors for the wings if the built up fails. They are jsut (Bright purple) foam cores so I'll still haev loads of work to do to them! (Assuming this is OK under the <25% 'bought in parts'!)
No pics yet as we aren't allowed cameras at work! ;D
-
Stunning progress on what looks like being a winning entry.
Tony
-
Thanks... but I think there is some serious competition!

Maybe use your laser cutter to make guide teeth in one continuous strip (like a very small saw blade)?
-
Sadly the teeth aren't continuous :?
-
Undercarriage remade and started on the tracks.

Looking very good Rich, look forward to seeing it "in the flesh" later
-
That is some damn fine work, and I mean that in multiple ways!
LB

The track are unbeliaveble!! :-* :-*
Well.. the rest as well...
Marco
-
Thanks all.
Track guides still need to go on... that will be... interesting... 2 guides per track link...
-
Track guides still need to go on... that will be... interesting... 2 guides per track link...
Looking good Rich - don't think I'd have your patience with that.
-
I might not either ;D
Obviously I also forgot to add weight to the hull so I'll need to cut it open and fit some ballast at some point.
Oh and top tip - don't put your newly tracked tank down in a blob of PVA overnight - It tends to stick to the build board!
No major harm done... :o
-
Track guides, is that on the outside of the track or the runners in the middle(or both!)
Those foam wings will never hold the weight of a full tank! ;) Great work Rich! :-*
-
(https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41j2bvXRHIL._SX355_.jpg)
The upper pic the two spikes go either side of the road wheels. I'm going t attempt to add them... might be a step too far though.
-
Going for the easy wing option
(http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/richardhumble/Mobile%20Uploads/20170113_175726_zpsxf0t3r2c.jpg) (http://s46.photobucket.com/user/richardhumble/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170113_175726_zpsxf0t3r2c.jpg.html)
-
The wings look great - how did you get the curve so smooth, I always struggle with foam?
-
I know a man with a cnc foam cutter which helps...
They will be covered with cloth and doped eventually.
-
Looking very good! :-*
The simplest approach is often the best.
By the by are you going to cast the tank?
-
I have a man for casting - I've done it before but he's better at it.
The canvas cover is on the wings drying then on to the varnish (can't use dope as it'll eat the foam!)
Jeff at Die Waffenkammer wants it as a master ;)
-
Wings looking a bit less green/purple
(http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/richardhumble/Mobile%20Uploads/20170113_213919_zpsikdmgt6t.jpg) (http://s46.photobucket.com/user/richardhumble/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170113_213919_zpsikdmgt6t.jpg.html)
-
That looks great
Is it actually going to be able to fly with those wings?
-
lol probably not! The hull will be weighed down to keep the tail up.
-
Dam!....that's good! :o
-

-
Very nice. :-* Please remind: what's the wing span?
-
Thanks.
About 300mm in the end. My drawing doesn't agree with the stated wingspan so I went for somewhere in the middle.
-
That's superb. Now I can't decide whether I like the tank or the wings best - good job it's one model! 8) 8) 8)

Agreed, the wings are very nice too!

Thanks.

I was expecting bigger but of course it's a small tank. That it looks like it could be bigger is testament to the detail and quality of your workmanship. 8)
-
Looks fantastic! I'm glad the tracks didn't totally destroy your sanity.
-
I haven't tackled the guides yet....
-
Wow! This looks amazing :)
-
Thanks!
Drunk too much beer so building 6mm Finns instead tonight!
Had to rip the tail fins off and they were too big, going to carve them from balsa instead.
Debating cutting ailerons but worried about buggering it up... :o
then there is the track guides... :(
-
Tank really looks great - I've made a few- but never as quick :-* I like the rivet technique as well.
-
Thanks
the speed is just practice - I've made quite a few over the years...

Looking through the other entries my build is pretty bland and uninteresting!
Pity I didn't think of stretching 'flight' to 'jump' - I could have built this:
It was an attempt at making a jumping T-26. It didn't work... ;D
Details here:

-
In no world is a flying tank "bland". None.
That being said, the jumping tank would have been cool too. It's one of those wonderfully silly ideas.
Seriously impressive skills on the build as well, especially when considering the speed you're working at.
-
Ta!
Wings are now built - now need detailing not that there is much to do.
Drag wires and control surfaces.
-
Not just stunning, but fast too!
This is going to be spectacular when completed.
-
Hope so!
Got to hack a big hole in the tank floor to fit the ballast too...
-
Bland and uninteresting the man says! He's building a flying tank! lol
Is the jumping tank on the build list then?
-
lol probably
Progress:

Colour me impressed!

That is just grand. 8) 8) 8) 8)

I've strung the lift and drag wires (thread and needle!)
I've decided that the wings are too boring so I'll cut the control surfaces so I can pose them a bit.
At Air Cadets tonight so I'll do that tomorrow...

v.impressive

A feckin' flying tank!?!
The mind boggles.
o_o o_o o_o
Wonderful build so far iwth a most useful rivet trick to boot.
Thank you.
:D

A lovely piece of weird which you are doing much credit. True craft skills to. A top contender for the Potatoe Cup in my book.

:o :-*
I'm struggling to find out from google, did any of these actually fly? Surely that's severely nose heavy?
-
One once maybe - wiki knows everything:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_A-40
The T-37 concept was a might more exciting:
Left to do are the control surface hings, the servo tabs and control struts then general tidy up (the spray made my string go hairy!) Then onto paint.
Plan is a basic 'factory fresh' paint job partially because it never went anywhere and partially as if the T-60 is going to be a master it can't have much done to it!
-
Control surfaces started then a few more details to add and done... Out play testing a new Too Fat Lardies game tonight so I'll get some time on Friday.
-
~Pic from this morning after first trimp of the wing end plates:

The control tabs need adjusting a little then I'll reconsider the track guides...

Looking good!

Ta.
The front hull hooks look huge in the pic (to me anyway) so they have to go... any excuse not to do the track guides.... that no-one else will notice... o_o

Methinks that if you primed em the same colour, you wouldn't notice them. Looks the dogs bollocks anyway.

superb stuff :o 8) 8) :-*

Argh... 1.5x1.5mm triangles....
-
Argh indeed, but it looks the business - stunning! :o :-* 8)

Half a bottle of merlot has not helped but half way there

-
Both sides for each track? I'd go nuts. Terrific work!
-
Er... maybe... not! I'll just do the outside to begin with!
-
Cripes!
I wouldn't have the patience to cut all those triangles, even with a whole bottle or merlot.
Well worth the effort though Rich.
8)
-
Mr Laser cutter (currently) does not get bored.... :D
But Merlot (and now Hendricks and fevertree) make positioning them tricky...
-
Hendricks and fevertree
Now you're talking
:)
-
Slurring my words a touch...
I'm not drunk you shilly sit. I'm jober as a sudge.
-
So.... I think I'm done...mostly. The track guides are on... well the outer ones. I'm not doing the inner ones as they are mostly hidden and not easy to see.
I've got the control struts to add to the wings but that's all I think.... Oh and a few rivets probably.
-
That's some attention to detail 8)
What did you fix them with? Superglue?
-
PVA for everything - superglue is far too tricky for my sausage fingers with bits this small.
Also it's very unforgiving as it bonds skin/mdf and mdf/mdf instantly...
PVA gives a strong but slow bond with a bit of flex so stops them getting knocked off too easily.
The 1mm MDF is surprisingly tough but it's got next to no strength in shear so the layers come apart.
-
Such attention to detail is commendable, Mr Merlot.
:D

Aha. Thanks Rich. I hadn't considered the sheer strength of the MDF. Makes perfect sense.
-
You an toughen it up with cellulose dope, superglue or similar.
-
And done! Probably.
Do you want a last pic or should I keep it secret :P

Of course we want a pic. ::)

Oh all right then...

Going to slap some paint on next week (if I can find my 2" brush) then it's back to the Centurion!

Vixe Maria! That's impressive, both in detail and size. Can't wait to see this painted up?
Question: How do you intend to depilidate the wing wires? PVA or just paint?
-
TBH I'm not sure. I might just replace them with beading wire - I suspect it'll be quicker!
-
Very nice, I like the wings. And great work on those tracks :)
-
That's just incredible, no wonder the gunner strolled over to have a closer look. 8) 8) 8)
-
That gunner is looking shell-shocked at the fact that someone has glued on individual track guides! Lovely! :o
-
lol Thanks all!
-
Looking forward to seeing that one painted up.
-
Yes me too... building the Centurion until I can get into the workshop and fire up the airbrush at the weekend. Assuming I can find sufficeint 'generic soviet green' Plan is to have it 'ready for inspection, comrade!' so shiny and factory fresh!
Reasons being - I'm not great at painting and it needs to be kept clean so it can be cast in the future (the tank not the wings!)
-
Wot? You're not casting the wings as well? :D

Agreed. Those wings need casting.
-
It really is an incredible construction. :o :-*
Both in real life and as a model
-
That really is a beauty!
-
Thanks chaps
I need to find time to replace the string with wire as it's all hairy and I don't seem to be able to tidy it up.
Also need to slap some green on it at some point...
Got into building this Centurion instead...
-
Changed the string and started on the paint... no pics! ;)
-
Everything has gone green...
What a fiddly git to paint with all the wires in place...

I really want to see this one in colour - and I'm not envying you with all the bracing!
-
My painting SUCKs but I'll do what I can...
-
Progress has been made.... of sorts :?
Best get the soft focus lens out...
-
How many days have we to wait now? :'(
-
Think it's the 18th... :o
Got wargames to play (Sharp Practice 2 tonight) and domestic chores to do as well as not get distracted by my Centurion/Oxford carrier/next folly project...
It's simply green with wood coloured wood bits and rust coloured rusty bits (tracks/exhaust).
-
Great work on an ambitious project!
-
Paint almost done... decals on. Just the final bits. It looks better than I'd hoped/feared ;D
Just the pics to go. Might have to get her tripod out.. :o
-
Get cracking man, it's the 18th here already! :)
-
Umm, no it's not and we are only 3 hours behind you.

I think a whole sub-section of the LAF membership just panicked at that statement! :o
-
Certainly clenched... :o

It's all over bar the shouting :D
(Back to the Centurion!)

I'll post some pics once the compo is done but the tank has gone to Canada for casting :D
Not the wings though! (Not yet at least)

Cool, it deserves reproduction. Excellent build!

I couldn't agree more! I love the way you build your models Rich! The accuracy and attention to detail is best, bar none!

Thanks chaps!

With Canada post it's more likely to be hot air balloon.
