Title: Wirelizard's BS2017 Entry - Der Bloodyear Blomp (Crew conversions, 8 Feb)
Post by: Wirelizard on January 03, 2017, 05:55:44 PM
The "flight" theme fits in nicely with a pair of ideas I've had taking up space in my skull for far too long!

The first, smaller, and saner idea is a goblin-run camera blimp/balloon as sideline decoration for a Blood Bowl. I might tag it as a Reroll Marker so it has some actual game purpose. Probably start with a styrofoam sphere for the balloon, with an insanely dangerous gondola/camera platform, that sort of thing. Goblins hanging off it with clockwork cameras strapped to them, etc... the Bloodyear Blimp?

The much more ambitious project is a 28/30mm cargo shuttle as Infinity scenery, sized to just fit in a banker's box, so footprint somewhere around 12" wide, 15" long... this one has been occupying serious mental processing power recently but might be too much for the contest timeline. On the other paw, a tight timeline might be the kick in the arse I need to get this thing built!

Both are great ideas - it's a shame you can't do both - Bloodyear Blimp sounds a lot of fun, but I can relate to using a deadline to get things done.

Speaking from limited experience (one entry) I'd go with the blimp. It's not six weeks to build, it's six weeks to build and paint and photograph.

Also, I play Blood Bowl and not Infinity, so I'm showing my bias :P

So after sleeping on the issue I've decided to do the goblin-crewed Bloodyear Blomp for BS2017.

Nobody - least of all her half-crazed goblin crew - was quite sure how the Bloodyear Blomp stayed airborne, but the lumpy airship was a common sight over the Blood Bowl stadiums of the world. All her crew would say when asked was to repeat the cryptic motto, "Blomping Ain't Easy"...

I'm thinking a couple of styrofoam craft spheres covered in cloth or paper for the lumpy balloon part, and a goblin-engineered (ie, terrifyingly ramshackle) gondola with loudspeakers, a play-by-play announcer's desk, and magically-run cameras hanging off it - in some cases, literally...

I'll probably put a pair of Reroll trackers on the base, one for each team, so it has some actual in-game sideline function as well as being absurd.

The crew will be cut and converted Reaper goblins from their various goblins available in their Bones material - http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/bones%20goblin - I've already converted a gobbo BB team from them and have a bunch of gobbo leftovers. I love how easy it is to convert and re-pose Bones figures, and you can't beat the price.

The Infinity cargo shuttle will undoubtedly resurface in some form eventually, possibly later this year, because I've long wanted to do a shuttle/dropship of some sort!

Sounds like a great project.  Might it also be used as a scoreboard, maybe a couple of gobbos clutching score cards?

I've got a goblin themed scoreboard already, actually. Built it last year.

Started building the blimp envelope this afternoon!

2.5" foam craft spheres, three of them so far. I might add a fourth to the tail end, but I don't think so. I didn't get any photos during assembly, but each sphere is held to the other two by a trio of toothpicks pushed halfway into each one, and generous blobs of white glue all around. Couple of toothpicks for a bowspririt and another on the third sphere for a flagstaff.

The white figures in front are Reaper Bones goblins. I used these figures as the basis for a goblin Blood Bowl team and they're also going to be the basis of my Bloodyear Blomp crew.

I have to admit I don't know what the gondola is going to look like at this point! I'm thinking vaguely boat-like, with some sort of engine midships, random piping up into the balloons (which will mostly serve to keep everything physically attached), a couple of camera stations, and some sort of announcer's station/desk - Blood Bowl Night In Der Olde Worlde with Gobb Cherry, maybe, to borrow a very Canadian joke!

The fabric on the envelope is from a pair of old stained linen napkins that my girlfriend was about to throw away. It'll take a few sessions with fabric and glue to get the whole envelope covered.

The barrel in the middle of the central sphere is going to be a lookout, with a goblin stuffed into it, probably converted with a telescope or just goggles.

Onward!

Decided to add a fourth sphere to the back end of the Blomp's envelope, because, well, why not? (goblin engineering 'standards' make for a fairly relaxed design process...)

I cut this one down a bit so it's not quite full size, and it's even more off-centre and lumpy than some of the others. There's a bit more fabric on the envelope, too.

The goal for this week is to get most of the envelope fabric glued down, and to actually figure out the layout and design of the gondola, of which I have to confess I don't have a firm vision yet...

Incidentally, the goblin BB scoreboard I mentioned upthread is here, from late 2015.

Blompin' along, in proper goblin engineering fashion, that is to say, making sh*t up as we go out of crude and basic materials!

Started on the gondola of the Blomp. It's slightly shorter than the balloons but a lot skinnier.

Here it is with a few of the Reaper Bones goblins who will eventually be the crew of the thing:

From bow to stern the plan is to have a camera station, then the "studio" with another camera and Gobb Cherry, Famous BB Announcer. Forming the rear wall of Gobb's announcer's desk is the flying bridge; immediately behind the flying bridge is the Improved Non-Exploding Flautulator Furnace, which furnishes lift gas and propulsion for the Blomp through terrifyingly dangerous goblin alchemical processes best left unexplained. At the stern end of the gondola is one last camera station.

The skeleton of the thing is two or three hardwood tongue depressors, some basswood scrap, and loads of superglue. Over that is going a skin of styrene plastic.

Here's the start of the Improved Non-Exploding Flautulator Furnace. The pipes coming off it are going to hide the structure that will connect the envelope to the gondola, eventually.

More to come, I should have more time tomorrow to work on this thing after not getting a whole lot done during the week last week.

Onward!

A great start on the gondola - nothing wrong with "making sh*t up".

As its goblins, will at least one of the crew be hanging off the side, holding on for dear life?

Almost certainly. Or tied off by an ankle dangling over the side with one of the Cabalvision cameras for a better angle on the Blood Bowl action far below!

Progress last night. Got the front half of the hull and the flying bridge skinned with styrene sheet.

Then I added a pair of steel bases (40x20mm) to the underside of the gondola, used more styrene sheet to level the underside again, and added the keel. Behind the superglue bottle you can see a piece of basswood with notches cut out of it - that will get a pair (at least) of rare earth magnets to hold it into that slot in the keel, and there will be a steel wire running down to the base to make this thing actually "fly".

Finally, I added the first pieces of the lift & propulsion machinery with a pair of tanks midships alongside the hull.

It's looking awfully clean, steampunky, and non-goblin-ish at the moment (at least to me!) but the detailing rounds should get over that particular hurdle! I'll do the aft camera station right at the back of the gondola next, probably, then the rest of the midships tankage and machinery, part of which will also be the main mounting point(s) for the balloon envelope overhead.

Onward!

I'll admit I'm intrigued what the Infinity shuttle would have looked like, I've been pondering something like it for a while as well. :)

Goblin-ish? Goblinesque? Something like that.

I have to admit that right up until I got the most recent round of building done - the hull tanks and rivet strips - I was wondering how goblinesque the thing really looked. The base hull shape is fairly clean and streamlined and I was wondering how convincing it was going to be as a goblin-engineered piece of kit...

Adding the tanks, engine, and rivets has started to goblin-ify it properly, though!

I'll admit I'm intrigued what the Infinity shuttle would have looked like, I've been pondering something like it for a while as well. :)

Some sort of dropship or shuttle project has been under consideration for years, first in 15mm and more recently in 28/30mm, and I suspect it will come up for serious consideration at some point again! I keep bashing ideas around, sketching in various mediums, and looking for inspiration, anyway.

More blomp-work and probably another update here this evening; I should get back to the balloons and get some more of the fabric covering done. That's going to take at least two working sessions to get done, because with glue-wet fabric you eventually reach a point where you can't do more without wrecking the parts you've just done that aren't dry yet...

Tonight was greenstuff night for the gondola, and another round of gluing bits of fabric down for the envelope.

First, the gondola. I filled in the various discs on the tanks and engine, and then ran lines of greenstuff around the two spheres of the engine, intending to make it look like really, really terrifyingly bad welding. The sort of welding trolls do while directed by intoxicated goblin "engineers", say!

Also started on the base. Rectangle of craft plywood, big fat washer, superglue, greenstuff.

Also, that big guy on the right? He's got a place in this madness. Ground crew, and part of the "flying" part of the base! Magnets will be involved.

Finally, here's one side of the envelope, which is now mostly covered by fabric. Still chunks of the sides to do and both ends.

It flies!

Well, getting there. Got four rare earth magnets embedded in the base of the big prepainted troll who acts as Grund Cru for the goblins, and sorted out a length of heavy steel wire for the flying part.

A slightly out-of-focus closeup of the base:

After this photo was taken I added a steel base under that barrel; there's another rare earth magnet embedded in the bottom of the barrel.

The plan for the big troll is to add a harness around his shoulders and back to hold the tow cable. The Blomp isn't technically self-propelled, it relies on the legendary density of trolls to hold it near the ground and tow it along!

I also started adding piping out of the Improved Non-Exploding Flautulator Engine on the gondola. The lower piping is basically decorative but the upper set will provide the structural connection between the gondola and the balloon envelope overhead.

I've also got all but one small section of the balloon covered in fabric, finally, but no pic of that currently.

Next up is a round of greenstuff work on the troll, the piping, and the base to clean things up.

I should be able to prime the gondola early this week and start getting some paint on it.

I also need to start converting the various Reaper goblin figures into camera-gobs, flight crew, and the legendary Gobb Cherry, loudly-dressed, loudmouth host of BB Nite In Gobada, who broadcasts from the Bloodyear Blomp! His conversion is going to consist mostly of a gigantic necktie and suit coat, which will be painted gold and purple or some suitably outlandish colour.

Canadians familiar with one of our most famous ice hockey announcers will understand the previous paragraph. The rest of you should hit Google Image Search and look up "Don Cherry suits" for an education!

Apparently I forgot to post this photo last night, the closeup of the gloriously goblinesque mess of wire coming out of the top of the midships Engine.

The four top wires will connect to the four balloonettes of the blimp envelope for structural support; they're embedded into fairly deep holes drilled into the wooden sphere of the Engine and should make the whole thing pretty solid.

The lower wires are all less structural but do provide some bracing for the Engine and side tanks on the hull. The Engine is also held together with wire pins between the hull and bottom sphere and between the two spheres. The greenstuff between the two spheres is also a pretty solid mass.

This thing should actually be fairly gamer-proof when it's done... I hope!

Moar greenstuff!

The troll has the start of his blomp-towing harness on, and the base has greenstuff to secure and properly locate various parts. I'll need at least one more greenstuff round on the base to get it to where it needs to be, but ran out of mixed greenstuff and time last night!

In the background, the underside of the bridge wings have been filled with greenstuff, roughly sculpted to look like planks, to secure the three rigging eyelets on each side.

The eyelets are a craft store find meant for ear-ring making at home, incidentally. Turns out jewelry sections are full of interesting bits and pieces!

The Engine has most of it's piping joins puttied up. I'll be painting them up to look like leather (used for a lot of early sealing and still in use today in some applications!) and wrapping cord around a few to fill them out.

Forgot to get a photo because my hands were covered in glue, but I've also finally finished covering the envelope in fabric and will be starting to paint it soon.

Up next will be priming the gondola and the blimp envelope, and starting conversions of the half dozen goblin crew members. I'm going to be painting the goblins as I convert them, so I'm not sure how many pics I should be posting here but I'll try to get some to share after the contest is over.

Meet the crew!

Bottom left we have Gobb Cherry, with a tie bigger than he is. Suit coat to come when I break out the greenstuff. The mic in his right hand needs a bigger foam head on it, too.

Centre bottom is the Captain of the Bloodyear Blomp, with his loudhailer. Fun fact, in Vulgar Goblish (all goblin-speak is vulgar...), the word for "captain" translates literally as "waker-from-hangovers", which in the feminine version can also mean "mother-in-law".

Centre right is the Engineer in his googles, with his reinforced "hittin' stuff til it works gooder" wrench.

Top row are the three camera-gobs and their cameras. Happily, primitive real-world movie and TV cameras turn out to be super simple boxes so these were quick to build.

Finally, top right we have the lookout. This position is traditionally given to the most horribly hung-over member of the Blomp's crew every morning, as wobbling around in a barrel on top of the balloons makes most goblins throw up anyway, so why not get it over with?

Greenstuff needed on all of them, then paint!

Onward and blompward!

I do wish we could post painting-in-progress photos, because I've just done the freehand "BLOODYEAR" across both sides of the envelope and it looks glorious and perfectly goblinesque!

Most of the paint is also done on the gondola; I figure if the main painting is done then worst case if I don't get the crew finished in time at least the flying vehicle itself can be submitted before the deadline.

Me too, the blogpost is already a draft copy awaiting more photos!

Envelope - fully painted, ready to attach to the gondola.
Gondola - touchup painting to do tonight.
Base - finished, painted, and flocked!
Ground Crew troll - 80% finished painting, to finish tonight.
Goblin Blomp Crew - 80% finished painting, except for Gobb Cherry's colourful coat, which I finished building up with putty last night.

Bits of paint tonight, attaching envelope & gondola together, then do the rigging between the two.

I should be good for daylight photos and submission on Saturday, sneaking in right under the deadline!

Then I need to take a hard look at my painting stuff and see about LPL11...  :o

Well trollpoop. There has been a very goblinesque engineering failure!

I got the envelope attached to the gondola, which looks good.

Popped the whole thing onto its flying stand.

And watched the whole assembly flop gracelessly sideways.

I'll whip up a short temporary stand for photos and submit the Blomp on its own, I guess, then consider the engineering issues post-contest...

Irritating, especially late at night after I'd gotten the two major parts attached for the first time and it was looking so awesome!

The current base is also built in a way that's going to be very hard to adapt or even shorten.

I've also since realized that the thing doesn't need a base at all to be submitted for the contest, having thought about it a bit more. The Blomp itself is more than large enough (8-9" long, 3-4" wide) to be contest-legal. I'll probably just find something to elevate it a bit for some of the finished photos when I take those on Saturday morning!
