Title: Jagannath's 28mm Rogue Trader - Noverian Constabulary and Bounty Hunters 20/3/21
Post by: Jagannath on January 03, 2017, 06:53:32 PM
Hullo All,

So - one of my resolutions this year is to be more productive... 2016 seems to have had far too much time given over to planning and the initial phases of projects, and not enough time given over to bloody well getting on with it.

Part of which is kicking off my Inq28/General Sci-Fi characters project - I've come to the conclusion that 15mm Sci-Fi as I've been painting isn't really working for me - not as characterful as 28mm and not as space saving as 6mm. I'll still be painting 15mm, just not for small, character based projects.

So, I'm back with 28mm kitbashing. These characters are intended to work in both an Inq28 setting but also a more general sci-fi setting I use a lot... sort of Rogue Trader, sort of Star Wars. 'Used Future' rather than grimdark.

He's a bounty hunter, suffering from a horrific mutation, held in check only by a hugely expensive serum. Hence turning to the dangerous but lucrative bounty work (his Inq28 background is different, more Nurgly).

Still a bit to do but the metals and skin is pretty much there. Gun and gun hand still need a bit of depth though. Gosh, my brushstrokes aren't too smooth in the pictures.

Is he working solo or will there be his 'associates' appearing later on?

Thanks all.

@Pocoloco - no I think he'll be a lonesome warrior - he's actually a 'proof of concept' from when I was playing with converting the genestealer cultists into nurgle cultists. I like him, but don't fancy making any more because I'm using the cultist bodies for something else. So now he's a bounty hunter!

Edit - changed 'bugle' for 'nurgle'... bloody spellcheck!

Shame - he is all sorts of gribbily nastiness.

Great work.

A sad character, reflected in his visage.

'ullo,

Well - been quite a while since I've had something to post in here.

Inspired by the very excellent Crooked Dice release of the old Palduron terrain I've been inspired to slowly gather and paint up some 28mm 'Wasteland' minis - I've kept this idea in my sci-fi thread because this is definitely the sci-fi, future wars end of post-apocalypse that I'm going for.

Before ordering anything though I wanted to get back in the swing of painting 28s, because I don't always enjoy it. I dug in the lead pile and pulled out these chaps from Pig Iron - really good minis, glad Pig Iron stayed on the scene as a brand.

I went for a speed painting method on these scruffbags - I usually basecoat/wash/rebasecoat then apply 2 or 3 highlights. On these I skipped the 'rebasecoat' stage and used the original basecoat colour as Highlight 1. It's made them murkier, but so much quicker to paint. I'm not sure I'd use this method for many other styles of mini, but I'm pleased with the overall effect on these. The only mistake is that I made the robes very grubby, and with the basing choice I probably should have made them dusty - I might dabble with some pigment to fix that.

Anyway - now these are up and running I'll treat myself to a little terrain. There's a real danger here that I'm going to retread the same setting I've done in my 15mm sci-fi thread, so I'm going to try and focus on human wastelanders, fairly low tech, and not too many aliens or muties. Maybe...

They look brilliant, and thank you for including how you painted them. I like Pig Iron too, I have a cultist force revolving around their figures but I would like to do mutants too at some point.

Thanks very much. Yeah, great figs - good chunky detail, nice and clear. I did have to sculpt the hoods so they held a bit closer to the heads, but that's just me being picky!

The Pig Iron stuff is great and fits in with a lot of old SF from my childhood- these specifically from the Dr Who story Genesis of the Daleks. The irradiated mutants roaming about on the surface.

Here's the next mini off the table - not been massively productive recently, but I managed to finish her off today and get a matte coat on.

I was inspired ages ago to do the conversion based on some of Axiom's excellent civilian stuff - she's the matriarch of a small family of arms sellers I'm working on (there's a thuggish son and and old gezzer dad on the way too). The arm and face injury add to her stern nature - i imagine a faulty radgrenade went off on the counter.

I'm dead chuffed with her - the Forgeworld cyber-hand slotted in nicely and my greenstuff bits (the hand, holster, belt, pouch and goggles) seem to have a nice balance and effect. All in all, a nice addition to the collection.

Btw, she's much shorter than she looks in the pics - that's a 20mm base.

Cheers - It's the lady from this pack

https://footsoreminiatures.co.uk/collections/irish-war-of-independence/products/1930-40s-rural-types

though I didn't know that when I picked her up off eBay. I think it was your Genestealer cultist farmers (with the creepy baby) that set me off buying weird civilians. Such good minis.

@Earther, I'm not 100% sure but I think he did the Footsore interwar range?

Plenty more 15s ready for basing at the moment - a space shepherd, wandering space prospector, a few mercs and bounty hunters... there's always something ticking along! I'm enjoying 28s again at the moment though, it's nice painting one off characters so I can mix paints pretty freely and not worry about duplicating it onto another miniature.

I'm in another 28mm dabbling phase!

Whenever I start thinking about 28mm projects, I like to challenge myself to paint some, to remind me why I don't enjoy it that much (and to save me buying a load!). Hasn't worked this time, because this guy was really fun!

I ***love*** Bob Murch's pulp figures, but I'm probably not going to get round to any pulp project any time soon. But if what I take the spirit of Rogue Trader and apply it to the few Pulp figs I own? In other words, sci-fi them up!

Here's Coban Zolt, adventurer for hire. A bit of a rogue, he can be found around the spaceports of the Solumanian Reach, though he was last seen accompanying a visiting xeno-archeologist into the dusty ruins of Slovaan Prime.

Literally not converted this one (other than clipping and filing the bolt handle off the rifle), just sci-fi'd him up with the paint-job.

Nice brushwork, I can see the similarities with your 15mm style and I think it works well on 28s too.

That was intentional really -- for all my painting dabblings and experiments (see both scales of my old west minis for example) the one I can confidently return to consistently is this 'blacklining, triad + dot' method (fairly extreme triads with a wide use of the midtone, then a second highlight only applied with dots). It's the one style that I know I could not paint for a year and be able to jump straight back into. It's a little extreme and doesn't work brilliantly on some things (flowing robes or 'soft' shapes) but its good on these slightly cartoony pulp minis.

Next up; Elena Vurtok

Elena charts a freight course across the Reach, pushing a tired freight-jumper through a fair few scrapes. Not known for her strict adherence to imperial haulier codes, she isn't above stopping her jump to pick over the carcass of a space battle, or stashing a little contraband amongst the cargo supplies that usually fill (if she's lucky) the hull.

'Scuse the pic on this one, it's punished the pale colours a little, lost some nuance.
Title: Re: Jagannath's 28mm Sci-Fi Dablings - New Pulp/Rogue Trader conversion (2/6/18)
Post by: Jagannath on June 02, 2018, 05:28:57 PM
Hobby time is at an absolute low at the moment, insanely busy with work but I have had a bit of time to start some more pulp minis conversions (I've also started the dollies for 5 28mm (!!) sculpts, with a mind to sculpting some Rogue Trader Pirates-esque minis). I'll show them once I've done more.

This is a conversion of the russian sailor pulp mini

Not sure if I'll keep the booze bottle or not yet - I quite like the idea of a drunken pilot, so that may well stay. His helmet conversion is obviously inspired by Lobot (which I was reminded of whilst looking at the insanely good Art of Solo book). The mini originally has a bandana (or ribbon type thing) handing down the back of the neck, so I had to tidy up between the shoulder blades where I'd filed it off, so adding an upper panel to his top seemed a good opportunity to sci-fi him up a little too. I might still alter the waist to give the impression his pants and top are part of a one-piece jumpsuit. The Mauser looks very Star Wars as is, so that's fine!

Also started this chap

Sci-Fi step one: removal of buttons and adding pouches. I think his epaulettes will come off, then I'll add some tonal colour panels on his coat when I paint him, so not changing him massively.

Brilliant pulpy models! I’m myself bitten by a 15mm Fantasy bug right now, but pulp sci-fi is one of my favorites which I do want to try out one day. Dan Dare, Buck Rogers, Flash & Co.
Your models catch this theme very well (as usual, I should say...)!

Thanks mate - I’m aware I’m retreading quite a lot of my 15mm sci-Fi here but I’m findig working in 28mm very relaxing at the moment. A change is as good as a rest, and all that. I’m hoping that I can work some overlap between Pulp conversions, original Rogue Trader minis (that I’ve been slowly accumulating) and *eventually* my own sculpts. The release of Star Wars legion has prompted me too - not for the minis, but for the aftermarket Tatooine terrain that’s appearing. My favourite!

I fully understand that. I do relax from time to time with some 28mm Oldhammer, and if I had more time, I would be right into Rogue Trader/Inq28/Necromunda...
Anyway enjoy painting „big“ minis for a while. It’s nice to see fingers, belt buckles and button holes for a while  lol lol :-*

Well, 45 mins between writing boring proposals gave me the chance to do this chap's skin and jersey.

Yes, I now realise he's channelling Kirk, which wasn't intentional, but I do like that mustard colour.

Decided to keep his bottle, like the idea of a drunken pilot. Between this WIP and finishing him he won't change much I don't think, will likely keep his pants very dark. What colour would they be in Star Wars - chocolate brown? Beige?

Thanks mate!

Oh nothing exciting - I'm the operations manager for a shop with a website and a couple of stores, I'm looking to make some big changes this year, so plenty of planning and developing solutions in my near future.

Okay, it doesn’t sound that bad, but then, instead of doing it, you could have painted up more minis!

Hullo folks,

I've been so busy for what feels like months, but I've finally finished a few minis!

I've had to squeeze in 5 mins painting here and there - it's been weeks since I could sit and paint for a stretch, so this small 28mm escape has been a bit of a blessing actually.

Sorry about the pics, bit near the lamp I think so there's some weirdness with the matt finish which isn't visible in the flesh. Still, you get the idea.

Firstly, I finished the drunken pilot:

Then I finished the trade-ship captain:

Next, I finished this chap - converted by his paintjob alone:

Then, a couple of Rogue Trader (RT601?) Pirates. I LOVE this range - I mean, half my 15mm project has always been to try and recreate the character in this range. I'm even inspired to start sculpting my own, which I'll show off in a few weeks. I went for bright and bold colours, with a bit of foppishness. I always liked that aspect of Rogue Trader

The pose of the first chap is so good (and very silly). One of my favourites.

More to come (eventually!)

Thanks mate. I’ve been shopping for minis from the adventurers/pirate range for a whole, and he was the first one I wanted to start!

Cheers chaps - it’s a great mini originally. I’m trying to learn to sculpt at the moment and I’m copying some Bob Murch minis (as in literally just trying to recreate them) and this is one of the ones I’m trying to capture. Not quite there yet mind!

Characterful, bold and bright without looking garish. Great work! Think my favourites might be the drunken pilot and the gent with the rifle - not quite sure how you've managed to swing him into scifi without making any changes to the sculpt, but it really works!

Thanks very much! If I could I'd commission Bob Murch to sculplt a whole range of Rogue Trader style minis, I love his sculpts, so looking for any excuse to use them!

He's from this Pulp Figures pack:

http://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=7439

Though I must admit I've bought a lot of these Pulp minis off an eBay reseller who sells individual minis.

My next update this weekend will be another Pulp 'conversion' (i.e. painted differently!)

Pilot down!

This is another of my 'converted Pulp minis - mostly just by the paint scheme.

I've got a handful of Scavvy plague zombies on the go at the moment, so I wanted this guy finished to play some solo games of the Walking Dead rules, a downed pilot seems like a great candidate for adventures!

He also marks the first mini of my personal 'mini a week' challenge - my time is very limited at the mo, so I'm aiming to finish just one 28mm mini per week, to flesh out this Pulp/Rogue Trader project.

Evening all,

Boxed off a couple more Rogue Trader naughty boys – a drunken chap (hence the red nose) and a punken (?!) chap.

Lovely sculpts – I really like the contorted pose of the yellow suited drunk, it’s a great dynamic pose, even if it is bizarre. He’s got a cracking face too.I struggle to paint dark skin tones (they’re a bit like black – hard to highlight whilst keeping them looking dark) so I treated myself to a Foundry ‘Dark Skin’ paint triad. I rarely use ready made triads, usually just mix light and shade from a base midtone, but this one helped. Not perfect, but pretty good. His pants draw any attention away from the skintone anyway!

These are painted to vaguely tie in with the first two Rogue Trader minis down the page, and there's a couple more to come soon.

Evening all,

If you follow me on instagram (@bladesandblastersminis) you'll have seen I've been fiddling with loads of bits recently - I bought an airbrush so inevitably most of my painting is taken up with that (I'm the same with any nw tool - or even new colour paint - until I 'get over' it).

I haven't finished much to post though, so it's good to get these two finished. More Pulp 'connversions' - a Xeno-Archaeologist and his faithful bodyguard. Easy peasy.

(Sorry I've blown these pictures out and killed the tones a bit).

I've become a bit obsessed with @bundo_kess on twitter recently (also posts on 'Sword in the Sprue Blog but doesn't update that as much) so I'm dabbling in a Pulp Sci-Fi thing with very bold basecolours, blacklining and very glossy gloss coats (think tin soldier style) which I'll start a new thread for in next few days.

Thanks matey - they’re very in the spirit of the 15mm stuff I was doing - maybe a bit more Rogue Trader and a bit less Traveller.

The airbrush is really great for what I wanted it for - varnishing, basecoating, terrain etc. Because I like to leave ‘blacklining’ it’s not as useful for me as it could be, but I just wanted it for basic timesaving jobs (especially in 6mm) so I’m really pleased. I’m not a huge fan of the airbrushing ‘style’ - like lots of infinity painters do, for example -- so not pursuing that.

Thank you! I try and tie disparate groups together by always having them share a colour or two (trousers and shirt in this case, plus the glasses and shoulder pad green). Can’t take credit for the wee monkey though - he actually comes on the mini.

oh cool - looking forward to your take on them.

Yeah his feed is updated more than his blog (I know that feeling!). I've been VERY inspired by Bundo Kess' 'toy' paintjobs - I've got some Pulp weird menace minis on the desk at the mo in that style. I suspect it's divisive but I really like heavily stylised paintjobs providing the whole 'set' (terrain, basing etc.) ties together.

It also seems like a great way of achieving a different style project, and getting bits finished quickly. I reckon this 8 man squad will only have taken 4 hours or so to finish, which is unheard of for me! I'll start a new thread for those though.

Brilliant painting, old chap!

The archaeologist is great; just the right guy who will excavate a burial ground of the Necron-civilization and wake up a sleeping legion of protector-bots. Tomb of the Cybemen, anyone?

The guy with the space monkey on the other hand...even better. The monkey is a great detail.

I absolutely love that this choice of civilians tunes down the whole setting, i.e. not everone is walking around in Power Armor and armed with a plasma gun. This is the setting where Space Marines do traffic controls and paint "fuk" on their armor. A dusty planet on the outer rim of civilized space.

Great paintjobs, dude!

PS
Bob Murch is GOD; and if I hadn't already so many painting projects, I would love to collect his minis, just because they embody pulp so much!

Thanks matey! That's exactly what I'm going for - that spirit of Rogue Trader, which was really just an amalgam of all the other sci-fi out there. I want to add some power armour, but I imagine them being much closer to an occupying/policing force (like Stormtroopers in Star Wars) then super-gene soldiers. Just bored, well-equipped troopers on a nowhere planet.

I really like what you're doing with these figures. It's tapping into the best part of RT for me - all of those star-travelling oddballs knocking around dusty backwater planets. Keep it coming!

And thank you! I'm clearly ripping off loads of your stuff - your Cthullul40k project is a massive influence, did that get abandoned?

I like the less epic aspects of sci-fi, the smugglers running contraband (nothing more than space tobacco and space porn), a band of misfits paid by the colony administration to chase away bandits harassing the colonists, exploration of old alien ruins (finding only old alien tobacco and alien porn), cantina brawls between competing crews, returning lost droids to their master...

I find your miniatures very fitting for those kinds of stories.

I've only gone and finished a few minis!

I'm back in my semi-regular 28mm mode at the moment and have managed to progress a few minis to 'finished' (and LOADS to about 80% done).

The main driver of this was my purchase of a table's worth of Fogou desert buildings, but those aren't quite finished yet so they'll do as backdrop until I get a bit more done.

Here's the group I boxed off this morning

They're not intended as a 'group' - I rarely paint like that - but I like to use occasional colour to tie minis together. That way I can assemble groups and gangs on the fly pretty comfortably.

First up is Bilton Darn

In his youth Bilton lead the a rag tag gang of misfits who terrorised the territories around Traitor's Folly but now he mostly props up the Cantina bars wherever his landhaul work takes him. Still - he's pretty dead-eyed with that blaster, no matter how strong the SynthBourb.

Next: Servitor M40

Servitor M40 worked as a stevedore on the atmospheric landing pads - it's rumoured that (unusually for a Servitor) he has conscious thought, and alleged plans to remove mindclamps and ferment a servitor-worker uprising sent a group of enforcers down to the landers. M40 has not been seen since. If you know of his whereabouts please contact the administratum.

Political Officer Ewpeel Worsch

Worsch was a political officer for 177th Tatooneean during the Chervv uprising. In retirement he seems to have lost faith in the Imperial code, and now bring his political fervour to any topic he decides to rave about. Rarely makes a salient point though.

Solo Garett, Smuggler

Solo is a gifted blockade runner, and hasn't found a sub-Warp lighter that he couldn't pilot yet. Unafraid to shoot first, Solo spends most of his time running between black market crime lords, charming or shooting his way out of trouble.

No creeping up on Solo!

Obvisouly Solo is the star of this little modelling exercise - he's converted from an Artizan cowboy whose legs I tool off below the knee to switch with some plastic GW Genestealer Cultists boots - incidentally I use this conversion technique a lot on plastics, it can really change a model. In my head sci-fi=boots with pants tucked in, which is one of the main challenges with trying to convert pulp or historical models.

He pistol is from the Escher box set, whilst his robot hand is another one of the Forgeworld ones I used on an earlier conversion too. I was a bit stuck for good alternative hands, but now I've got hold of the Frostgrave wizards that's sorted for future conversion.

His hat took the most work, quite a lot of cutting and shaping to stop it looking like a cowboy hat. I think his palette and the cap give him a sort of ex-military look, like he kept his fatigues.

And that's the lot! Like I say, I'm a role at the moment and hopefully I'll be back with the finished Fogou town soon!

Yeah - pretty saturated with paint then just one dab per ‘stroke’, so you still get the cracks etc showing through. Makes it realistically patchy.

Some very nice figures there; I like the dusty backwater rough and ready (and mostly armed) civilians type stuff rather than the glitzy high-end military forces.

Oh those are lovely! Both the buildings in the background and the figures. (I'm humbled that you've used the masking tape and sponge technique!).

Your conversion of Solo is brilliant. All the little subtle tweaks add just the right amount of sci-fi toresult in a thoroughly convincing space rogue!

Others have already said it, and I can only agree with them: magnificent work, my friend, really spectacular little conversions!

Thanks everyone!

@Ghengis - exactly, dusty civilians is basically all I paint!

@Axiom - we’ll it worked so well on yours! I didn’t dare go as bold as your colourful house, but I’ve got 9 or so buildings with 3 different colours of stripes - I figure I can mix them all together, or for the small RPG type games I play I can represent a ‘district’ by only choosing buildings with the same colour  stripe maybe.

And thanks - it’s an uphill struggle with these historical miniature sometimes but the end result is often closer to my sci fi vision than most sci fi minis out there.

@ockman - thank you dude, I come up with the little stories afterwards, generally I like to keep my minis as sort of archetypes that I can pull out to represent a character, but not always.

@DivisMal - thanks very much, that’s kind! Plenty more on the way.

Ah it's gorgeous, it's perfect, and then you put my buildings in the background and I'm so excited I just turn into that Vince Mcmahon meme!

Seriously, you are hitting it for six with this project, subbed!

I've been pretty busy recently boxing off some last few fantasy 15s before they head off to their new home, but I have managed to finish my wonderful Fogou desert buildings

I'm a big fan of the terrain you see in Fallout 2 and similar old isometric games, where with a bit of context and dressing they are reused as different things, so these got a very generic desert and rust finish. I wanted the rust to be very simple and not to draw too much attention but also very rusty - the lighting makes it a look a little flatter than it is in real life here.

Really pleased with these buildings (and the couple of 3D printed additions). I wanted everything as modular as possible, hence not based (unusual for me!) though I'm not a fan of playable interiors so I sealed the roofs and added some filler to secure. They're absolutely fantastic models, can't recommend enough.

Hats off to Axiom too, who I've clearly stolen the idea of adding a splash of colour from. Once I finish my market place I'll be stealing his 40Kthulhu idea too!

It has been a while since I landed here, it seems....

Loving the new additions!

The buildings look great, love the feel of the town.

The various figures from different settings work really well too.
I often find myself doing the same kind of thing: Thinking 'I like that figure, how can I shoehorn it into my setting?'

I just love your Fogou buildings, they're brilliant! You've been a bit more restrained with your colours than I have, and the result looks great with the full table set up - the perfect backdrop for a shootout!

Thanks gents!

@Mason - I think you and I are on similar pages, I’m trying to capture a sort of old west in space vibe without it literally being cowboys with laser guns.

Great job Rory  :-*

They’re really excellent to work on - I toyed with keeping them generic enough to be useable in historic/fantasy too, but I opted against it. Nothing stopping me adding another set!!

I’ve used 3 colours so for small RPG games I can only use the same colours and maybe represent a ‘district’ or mix them as needed. I do love your colourful ones - maybe I should a add a couple extra one off colourful buildings too.

Gorgeous work, mind if I nick some of these for social media?

Hello all, been a while since I boxed off any sci-fi.

I've been working on a new style for a while - detailed in my fantasy thread here https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=127014.msg1604391#msg1604391 but I don't bother with the gloss stage anymore.

I've also - finally - cracked pigments! I wanted dusty, martian-ish bases inspired partly by the dusty scenes in the Drifter comics. I think they've come out really nicely though now I need to work out how to take pictures of them effectively!

First up, Noverian Constabulary - enforcers and inspectors for the guild collective, they can be found inspecting shipments and harassing caravans across guild territories.

These are the Artisan designs steampunk police, with Crooked Dice heads - I'm really pleased with how they turned out. Although they ended up different I was really inspired by the mining guild guys in episode 9 of the Mandalorian, and tried to capture a bit of that vibe.

Next up, a bounty hunter  kitbashed (digitally) from the various bits I've accumulated across Anvil Industries patreon. The head is from somewhere else though, that I can't remember.

Finally a Heroforge bounty hunter checking his wrist computer for the next job. I was trying to capture a a Strontium Dog vibe with this guy, which I think worked OK. This was the first print off my newer printer and it shows - I've dialled it in now and don't get the artifacting anymore.

Anyway - getting nicely warmed up for Stargrave now!

Thanks gents - I’m trying to capture a bit of Pascal Blanche with the basing, plus I’ve always like the visual contrast the Mars-ish bases provide.

Plenty more to come - next is a sci fi Caravan I knocked up, and a little farmstead I want to knock up - like the spot K visits at the start of Blade Runner 2049, but sci fi-er.
