Here shall be recorded Mason's attempt to finish this thing in six weeks.....
....it might even happen.
Maybe.

You just know whatever he makes is going to be sooo un-PC! ;) Keep the LAF lawyers on speed-dial, just in case! :D

I am saving that for the BLAM game.
:D
It shall be positively fluffy, warm and cuddly.
;)

Looking forward to it
:D

So you will have an entry after all? Excellent!
Fluffy, warm, cuddly and flying... sounds interesting ;)

Lets hope you still think so when I post a concept idea.....

Is your glider going to be in Spanish, like the clip?

Never knew they had goats. Do they stare at them?
Of course not.
Only men stare at goats.
You know that.....
;D
Is your glider going to be in Spanish, like the clip?
No.
The glider will be multi-lingual so anyone can talk to it.

Oh, so what do they do with the goats then?
[EDIT!] Oh dear, that might better be left unanswered... ::)

I don't look for a few days and all these threads appear. Good luck with this :)

Cheers, mate.
I should just clarify, before the deadline tomorrow at 'Bibbles O'clock', that the idea will be to build two one 'man' parawing gliders, one of which will be more reminiscent of the Ewok offering and one a little more technologically advanced.
Including 'pilots' for both.
Whether I manage to get them done in the time allowed is a little iffy, but I will give it a go.
-
Looking forward to see those gliders, Paul, especially the Ewok-one :)
-
Cool Paul 8)
Ewok gliders are something from Star Wars that I actually know so looking towards to seeing how you do it.
-
You're going to include the goats, right? It won't be a proper Ewok glider unless there's a goat chewing through the launch rope!
:D
-
Thanks, chaps.
:D
Not sure if I will get the time to make both and, as I am beginning with the more 'advanced' one the Ewok variety may not get done, but we shall see. I hope to do the pair. If I do get the time I doubt it will have any goats attached to it, though..... ;)
I have now managed to find some time to start on the first one so, hopefully, there will be some progress to report tomorrow.
:D

Well, I have made a start.....
This is probably going to be the smallest entry in the BSC this year, especially if I do not get time to do the Ewok version.
Speaking of the 'original plan', it was something like this:
Keeping to the original spirit of the 'Build Something' principle, I wanted to keep to using basic scratchbuilding techniques, no fancy equipment, whilst also making something that can also be cast up.
Therefore I am strictly using materials that will survive vulcanisation, so no plastic etc...
(At this point I should mention that scoring brass plate continually with a Stanley knife until you can snap it cleanly is a bit of a pain!)
The plan is to build this during this week and then send it off to be cast up and hope I get castings back to paint up before the deadline.
So, I really need to get at least this one finished, and hopefully the Ewok-influenced version too, by Thursday evening.
The more advanced version is nearly done and only needs detailing. I also need to sculpt the pilot whilst at the same time crack on with the less advanced version (and cuddly pilot) using 'castable' materials.
Here is where I am at at the moment....
As soon as I have finished the underside I need to figure out exactly how the pilot will be attached to the thing, but I do have an idea on that.....
-
Looking good. The wing set has an almost VSF vibe to it. I like it.
-
You have been busy! Looks great!
-
That's a great build there.
As for attaching him, I think a harness would suffice along with perhaps a couple of joystick thingies projecting out the front for his hands to use. Or maybe something like winch handles to help guide the flight?
Looking forward to seeing castings.
-
Love it. A great start indeed!
:)
-
Looks good - curious to see how it will look with the pilot. 8)

Thanks, mate.
I am trying to keep it as generic as possible, so that is good to hear.
:)

Thanks, chaps!
Not busy enough, Antti, as I was hoping for more time before now to do this, but I shall have some time tomorrow, which is nice as I now know where I am going with it.
;)

So am I.
I hope my idea works......

I am going for pretty much what you stated, the issue is how I am going to make it work both for casting and assembly.
There are too many multi-part metal kits that are a pain to put together and I dont want this to be one of those.
If all works out well it will be a simple matter of 'plugging' the parts together without any pinning or fiddly little parts.
It is the technical aspect of this that I am finding most pleasing as I have not tried this before but I am very much enjoying the challenge.
:)
-
Good start! 8) Does your Ewok have trainers? lol Are you not keeping it tight for time?

That is not the Ewok!
;D
They are the start of a big pair of 'Jump boots'.
:P
Yes, but I am stuck with that side of things so will stick with the plan anyway.
:o
:D

very nice indeed

Thank you, sir.
:)
The main parawing construction is almost done, just a little tidying to do.
Time to work on the pilot and then figure out the connectng gubbins between the two.
Piccies later....

Cheers.

That's a pity! You could have made the trainers Nike 'Air'! Surely that's worth double points for the 'flight' theme?

lol
I could try a couple of 'Swooshes' on the sides of the boots....
;)
-
Update time....
I have finished the Parawing itself apart from minor tidying and made decent progress on the pilot.
The topside of the craft was kept fairly simple to keep a feeling of maybe being able to actually fly.
;)
Whilst the underside was given a little more detailing, 'repulsor' panels and 'thruster' type gubbins....
...whilst decent headway was made with the pilot......
I hope to get everything finished tomorrow.
Fingers crossed.......

Looking good. Just need to sculpt fur on his face and arms?
-
This would go well with a certain tribe of hooded sci fi desert-dwelling 'gentlemen'.... :D ;) 8)

No fur on this fella.

I have almost finished the pilot, which will be easy to swap out to put in another figure if that is preferred.
;)

Moving right along there Paul! Nice mix of skills on display.

I have read this thread a couple of times at work where I cannot see the pics so have only just caught up. Splendid progress but I did expect something a lot more organic with all the chat about ewoks.
Scoring brass? Man did invent the saw you know.
-
Thanks, chaps.
:)
This is more about a challenge to combine scratchbuilding with making something castable to me.
I have not got the time at the moment to go to town and build something bigger or the 'need' for anything to justify doing so, it is more an attempt at making something that I have not done before using materials that I have readily available.
As for more organic, in the Ewok vein, I may well attempt that one whilst I await the return of this contraption from the caster.
I may will stick to the same build plan and chuck that in a later mould.
And regarding not using a saw: I would not have gotten as clean a line with a hand saw given that I do not have the steadiest hands around. The 'score and snap' gave me a nice clean break, even if it was a little tedious.
;)
-
Need?!? What's need got to do with? I've got a flying hotel! lol
-

Ah, but you have a use for that in your MC-1 shenanigans.
:D
There is a large landing pad that I want to build for my own Sci-Fi setting, Outland, that would have have fit into the theme, but I do not have the time at the moment to build that.
I hope to get on to that and the rest of the scenery for the setting later on in the year.
Hopefully.....
-
It's coming along very nicely Paul. 8)
-
That parawise looks really slick, like something you might see being advertised on TV
Can you make a 1:1 scale one now Paul?
:)

it aint a dragon but it suits my purposes.

I think I will need to get myself one of those IKEA wardrobes of yours.
;) ;D
-
Well, I have pretty much finished.
I have made the connecting section to attach the pilot to the wing and finished the pilot off too.
Here is a quick shot of the pilot....
(B+W piccie as I can never take a decent shot of green stuff...)
I just need to pop him off of the cork, sort the soles of his boots out and then I will blu-tac the whole thing together for a final preview shot before it goes off for casting.
-
I like this one 8) 8) 8)
-
That pilot looks great :)
-
Wish I had your putty skills
:)
-
Very well done Paul. 8) I hope the casting comes back in time!
-
Looking really impressive thus far.
-
Thanks, chaps.
Much appreciated.
:)
...I hope the casting comes back in time!
I can only cross my fingers with that one.
Even if it does not work out time-wise for the deadline, I shall still be painting it .
So I will continue this thread anyway.
I have taken some pictures of the thing assembled.
I shall get to uploading them and posting them later.
It all makes more sense when you see it together.
I hope.........
-
The thing assembled with blu-tac.

Not the best shots but I had to take the pictures fairly quickly before gravity did its job.....
;)
I think that gives a better gist of what is going to happen.
Hopefully.......
-
Nice one.
-
Excellent !!! :-*
-
Very cool!
-
I was trying to look, I was hoping he was resting on a book called "How to Fly" or "Flying for Dummies".
Great work mate! :-*
-
Thanks, chaps.
:)
These photos have been most helpful in indicating the areas that needed a quick tidy.
;)

I am afraid that I own neither of those books, mate.

For some reason I was picturing the pilot riding on top of the wing, as in various anime and SF sources!
-
Thanks, chaps.

That would be an easy enough conversion although, as that sounds like a bloody good idea, I may just make an alternative pilot to do just that.
;)
-
Thanks, chaps.

Indeed.
The possibilities are endless.
;)

I have just received confirmation that the casting(s) are on their way and should be with me today.
Now the nervous wait to see how they came out.
::)
-
Fingers crossed! :)
-

Cheers, mate.....
....because that obviously worked.
;)
I have them and all is well.
I shall assemble one, prime it and take a piccie over the weekend before seeing about actually painting the bugger.
:D
-
:D
-
Looking forward to seeing it.
-
OK, as I have not had time to assemble any of the buggers over the weekend and time is running out, here is a shot of a couple of castings for now.....
....which will have to suffice for my 'pre-painting' piccie.
A bit of clean-up is required before I prime one but that is no bother, just a few quick swipes with a file.
Now I just have to hope that I can find the time to paint one and sort out its base before the deadline.
-
Shiny! :o 8) :-*
-
Always nice to see newly cast toys
:)
-
Ooh they look rather neat. I can see Outlanders using them on the thermals, Victorian sci-fi pilots scouting Mars and loads of other uses.
-
Thanks, chaps.
:)

Cheers, Steve.
They will definitely be seen on Outland and I do have plans for using these masters as the basis for some variants.
;)
-
Well, it has been painted and photo submitted but the most important thing I have learnt from this is the colour scheme that I chose really does not help with photos.
I shall paint another in a few weeks in a very different scheme.
I also have a pretty good idea of how I want to convert it to be more useful.
;)
-
Very cool. They should sell like hotcakes
-
Can't wait to see it buddy!
-
Thanks, chaps.
:)
Can't wait to see it buddy!
Dont hold your breath, mate.
It looked better before I painted it.....
::)
