Title: Dr Mathias's Space Hulk Escape Pod Bay
Post by: Dr Mathias on January 04, 2017, 09:59:21 PM
My plan is to add to my 3D 'low wall' Space Hulk. I gathered a few drop pod looking things a couple years back, and I've wanted to incorporate two escape pod bays into the layout. It will mostly be Hirst Arts but I'll need to do some custom shapes for things. Nothing to show yet ;)

I've been nursing the idea to build a 3D Space Hulk set for years now - do you have pictures (or a build thread) of the current lay-out online ?

Yes indeed, that's the one. Thanks for finding the link! I've had plans to add stuff to the layout for a long time. Thank goodness for all the wacky LAF contests that come along, they are great incentives to make something!

I'm hoping for another 'It's Alive' thread sometime too ;)

Not a whole lot of movement yet, I'm still trying do decide on the shape and size of the escape pod bays. My hulk is 1.5 inch squares and I may make a transition piece so I can connect to 1 inch grid.

Here's the pods. They had some Mega-Blok mechs in them.

I've been using a press mold to replicate some iris doors for the pod exit points.

Another decision is the orientation of the pods. I was originally going with wide end down, but I think the door would make more sense lower and I'll make some 'arms' that hold the pod in place above the iris.

I also cast some maneuvering thrusters in resin. The master was a Lego and a Hirst Arts casting. Should be four per pod.

I'm thinking two 'bays' of three pods each. I'd also like to make some scenery 'troughs' the pods landed in for planetside scenarios.

After a lot of thought I settled on a layout. I'm making three  " + "  sections that each have two iris doors in the floor. The iris will be recessed a bit.  This will let me hook all three pod bays up together, or scatter them around the hulk. The side opposite the entry can be capped with a computer console, or just continue on as need be. I'm planning on making two arm brackets that will hold the pod in place over the iris.

Now the difficult task of sorting parts and deciding which ones to use. Looks like I'll need to cast a few parts as well.

Just a quick question, are you using resin or plaster to cast those Hirst molds? I have some of them, lol.

Just a quick question, are you using resin or plaster to cast those Hirst molds?

I use "Merlin's Magic" dental plaster. I don't think I've ever used a Hirst mold for resin- I wish I had for the round industrial grates though, they're delicate. A few early casts were plaster. The new ones are going to be tan colored because my basement flooded a couple months ago and it spoiled the gray  :(

That's a lot of pieces. Can't wait to see it being put together.

I have a big stockpile of casts, I was sort of an addict a few years ago. This is a small portion!

That picture must be misleading, I'm not using all the parts shown! That's just a selection of pieces I'm drawing from. I did however, cast a bunch more since that pic because I didn't have enough of certain components ;)

I'm intrigued as to how many and how big this entry will be.

Overall size is variable as it is modular, but the length with all three bays and an endcap computer terminal will be 19 inches. The pic has two GW scale figures.

Each section will be 52 cast parts, with some additional scratch built hydraulic arms that hold the pods in place- the plan is for those to be plastic. There is also a sculpey iris, a foamcore riser, and a Plastruct diamond plate platform.

I think I have all the casting done now, I need to cut the openings for the iris to drop into slightly and I can start assembly. After that I'll work on arms and pods.

Yes, I finished out the full set for third edition. I haven't made the new sections introduced in the fourth edition- I think GW added a room that was partially destroyed and exposed to 'open space' as well as some boarding torpedoes. Maybe I'll try to bang those out now too, or else it will be another couple years ;)

Some of the maps are really big and take up an entire 4x6 table- I'll get a large shot when I finish the pod bays.

Constructed the three platforms today and cut the diamond plates to shape, exposing the iris. I wish I had another pod, I'd like to make one that misfired and got stuck in the tube. I may try to scrounge one up somewhere.

I also made four endcap terminals. One will have a little scenic element.

Next up is the arm apparatus that hold the pods above the iris. I'm planning on styrene for that, with the idea that they will have that 'questionable' 40K look, in terms of function and reliability. Tech priests and Imperial citizens needing to use them will double their prayers ;)
I also need to add magnets to the board sections (that's what holds them together when laid out), do some work on the pods, and make a few dirt troughs for 'hard landing' sites.

Do you really need a seventh pod? Could you not just have one wrecked anyway? If you don't want to play a game with a ruined pod in it, just leave that section out.

Those escape pods ... you said they were some Mega Blok containers.  I've scoured the interwebz trying to figure out which set they came from.  Do you recall?

Also, you totally need to toss a few droids in one of those pods.  See if anyone notices.

They are Mega Blok 'Plasma Tech". Last week I had trouble finding out what they were, and I even knew what I was looking for!

Not much progress (visually anyway) since the last update. I tried a sample layout, cut a circle out and set a pod down in the iris opening, I don't think it looked quite right. I glued in the magnets on the ends and added a strip of card around the sides of the sections.
I've started cutting components for the hydraulic arms, I hope to have those built soon.

I spent the last three nights working on the arms that hold the pods in position. I didn't think they would take me quite as long as they did- I have even more respect for those people working on the excellent landing gear in the other 'Build Something' threads now!  lol

The board sections are mostly finished now, although I'd like to add a hydraulic line to arch arm, and I have a semicircular doodad to add to the outside edge.

I also decided I didn't really need six functional escape pods, so I made one mechanical mishap with a pod stuck in the iris. I used a heat gun to soften the plastic so I could twist it to appear torqued out with a sheared-off shaft.

Thanks all, appreciated!

Squeezed in a few more details tonight. Added a few pieces to the sections, filled in some holes in the pods, and I cut away one of the hatches. I created a new one to make it appear opened. Just in case someone feels like peeking in I made a few seats to put inside. I think I might be able to put in four... cramped quarters ;)

Left to do:
Add hydraulic lines
Add maneuvering thrusters to pods
Make 'Out of Order' sign  lol
Make landing zones scenery if there's time
Paint
Title: Re: Dr Mathias's Space Hulk Escape Pod Bay
Post by: Dr Mathias on February 11, 2017, 01:25:43 AM
I spent today working on the maneuvering thrusters, which gradually progressed from standard building, to annoying, to cursing.

First, the thruster element sat a little too high, making it look like the capsule was too wide to clear the iris. I took the pods to my workplace and used the belt sander to sand them down. Then I glued them in place and primed the pods.

When I got home, I discovered the pods wouldn't slip into the arms without some serious wiggling, which was scratching off primer and would surely scrape off the paint. I had glued the thrusters too far toward the middle of the capsule.

Naturally, my glue job was a good one and prying off the thrusters was not an easy task- I'd scraped the glue point to help the bond.  lol

Much to my chagrin the glue point tore off the underlying pod in some cases, and left an unsightly mark in every case. Anyway, now I'm cutting thin plasticard to cover the blemishes. The pic shows the thrusters in the new position.

Until today I thought the hard stuff was done ;)

This is probably the last photo before the deadline. Everything that is done is primed and ready for paint.

My intention is to continue with the landing zones, but I haven't even started them yet. They're more associated with 'rapid and violent stopping' rather than 'flight' anyway  ;)
