For absolutely no reason, I decided over the holidays that I wanted to make a post-apocalyptic marketplace. Now, I don't have a lot of storage space, so this is going to have to take the form of several different scenery pieces. I started out by making some vendors' tables.
There are four so far, each of them with a different theme: weapons, adventuring supplies, food and technology. The poles at the back of three of them are going to hold up signs advertising the booth.
This was also an excuse to paint up a bunch of civilian characters. There are still more of these to do, but here's a start:
This guy is the merchant of the adventuring supplies stand, I think. He's a model I got from Ramshackle Games, possibly as a free miscast.
This Gnomad is going to be the gun seller, I think. He has a couple of armed buddies I painted back in 2015, so maybe they'll be his guards. I have a few left, so I might use some floral wire to make one of them a guy holding a sign advertising the booth.
Rusty runs the technology booth and is prone to rhapsodizing about his priceless an-ti-kyoos, each of them a technomological marvel of the world that's gone.
The Reverend hangs around the marketplace, telling people about the miracles of the Robot Messiah. His staff is topped by the relic of a cybermartyr.
I think I'm also going to do some animal cages, maybe a gate, some warning signs ... what else should be in a post-apocalyptic bazaar? All suggestions gratefully welcomed.
-
I look forward to the animal cages! My 15mm bazaar so far has a few traders' trucks, a mountebank's caravan, several weapons vendors and a "clean" water stand.
-
I am definitely going to do a water vendor. I was thinking of the "H2BrO" robot from Wasteman.
I should sort through my toy-car drawer and see if I have a suitable truck for things to be sold off the back of, that's a good idea ...
-
Yeah, some cups for the water seller's stand too. You can make them really easily. Cut some plastic tube, then make a handle from wire by bending it around the tip of your pliers. Drill holes for the wire in your tube-cup and voila! If they are on a table you dont even need to do a bottom.
Also I would suggest a collapsible (for easy storage) stage for selling slaves on (or doing shows), with relevant signage.
Here is my Water Baron, but no cups.
-
I do admire that water cart. A stage is a good idea; it can do double duty as a place for my Goffik Rokker band to perform.
-
I am going through my post-apocalyptic collection at the moment; I have some guys who will serve well in the marketplace.
-
I finished the H2BrO, who will be the water seller in my marketplace!
-
Do not become addicted to water, James Holloway. It will take hold of you and you will resent its absence.
Lovely work!
-
Careful - I started with a small marketplace and ended up with a bloody town market to rival any bazaar...

-
AWESOME! Congratulations!!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Now you need some neo-barbarians in vehicles to raid it! ;)
-
Sinewgrab, your marketplace is a big inspiration -- well, I could say that about a lot of your PA terrain!
-
That water cart is PRICELESS, CONGRATULATIONS! Looking forward to see it painted! ;)
-
Sinewgrab, your marketplace is a big inspiration -- well, I could say that about a lot of your PA terrain!
Really? I will take that compliment - I sometimes wonder if I have been putting stuff up for too long, as no-one comments anymore. I just became passe...
-
Wow, please don't stop posting this stuff, it's gorgeous! I can
steal get inspiration for some ideas too! :-*
-
There are some brilliant ideas in this thread. looking forward to it progressing and me getting inspired from it!
-
Behind every marketplace is a rich jerk. Here is the jerk I have in mind! Honestly he's more like a lord or civilian for sci-fi games, but I just painted him and I feel pretty happy about him, so he can also be a wealthy merchant.
Those old Spacelords figures are such fun to paint.
-
Very nice. what is the model to the left of the rich jerk?
-
The pig guy? He is a pig-faced space orc, sculpted by John Pickford for Foundry but never released. I was lucky enough to just be given a set of them by chance, and I have since painted them up.
Here is a shot of the whole group:

Here is the leader and his orderly:

This young Gnomad got a job working at a weapons stall. What he lacks in spelling he makes up in being the owner's cousin.

inspiring thread!!
-
A friend of mine read the WEPPINGS CHEEP sign and thought it said WEDDINGS. I laughed, but she was onto something! How about a wedding chapel? Here, a lasgun wedding in progress.

-
Look great. I must have a crack at something similar.
-
I realise it's not a market piece as such, but it's a civilian project so I thought I'd add this little house. I got a bunch of miscast parts from Ramshackle Games this past Oldhammer weekend, including a big shipping container and a bunch of doors, pipes and panels, so I stuck them all together as the spirit moved me and then added a few extra details like a partial fence I got from the LAF sprue exchange.

-
Again, not marketplacey as such, but it seems weird to make a second thread just for other PA models. Here are some more post-apocalyptic models from the Ghosts of Gaia Kickstarter plus some Pig Iron guys that have been sitting in the tin bin since I bought them on here a year or two ago.

Inspiring work!

Haha, the wedding chapel is something I had never thought about! :D
Everything here is tremendously cool :)
-
James, just awesome, CONGRATULATIONS! ;)
"Lasgun Wedding" is PRICELESS!!! lol

Some wonderful ideas in this thread, executed extremely well indeed.

That chapel is a great idea lol
"Lasgun Wedding" is the title of a Necromunda novel, I think I read it but don't recall anything about it :)

This needs Hasslefree's Elvis impersonator (Bubba) if you want that chapel to be in New Vegas :)

For sure. I also want to get that not-Buddy-from-Six-String-Samurai model I saw somewhere. And then I can add the rockers from em-4 ... basically this never stops.

OK, the Gnomad weppings -- er, weapons -- shop is open for business!

Great scenes. I can practically feel the disapproval radiating off the missionary :)

Where are you slave models from? I don't recognize them...

Ramshackle. I don't know what kit; I bought them off Curtis in a big box of.miscellaneous figures.
-
How much for the girl on the left? With fries, please! 8)

Amazing work! So inspiring. I really must get round to doing post-apoc some time.
I love the colour palette you use which is colourful yet muted.
-
I turned some army men -- 100 for £1, at least according to the label, although I don't know. I have a few dozen at least -- into guards for the post-apocalyptic marketplace. Or rather I should say that I turned one; the others aren't done yet.
Before:

After:

A little raggedy, but not bad for a penny. Head is from a Frostgrave soldier, backpack etc. from the bits box.

-
Great work, particularly the army man conversion!
-
I'm really pleased with how he came out. I've got three more on the go at the moment:
As for the others, I might get some corpse markers or similar out of them; they're not great.
-
The stalls are now half done! Here's the second:
The base of the stall itself is a pile of dominoes (£1 for two boxes at The Works), with the usual collection of odds and ends from the bits box. The sign at the back is a mast from a Man O' War ship, glued into a wooden jar or vase from Hobbycraft.
And here's the two stalls together:
I also completed a few more characters to hang out in the market:

-
Really inspiring topic. I love picking out little bits from my collection and seeing how you've used them so much better than I have! Where did you get those army men from? Can never have enough corpse marker fodder and for £1!
-
Ah what a nice level of detail and wonderful ideas for a P.A. market.
Well done!

Poundland, I believe. I mean, they're not perfect -- scratch that, they're terrible, and the plastic is a pain to work with -- but y'know. I guess frugal gaming is my thing.
-
Great log, really inventive and fun!
-
James Holloway, you will need to build a bar/tavern/cantina/water hole to go with that market! ;)
-
Liiiiike this one?

I intend to expand Wildsnake Charlie's with an outside bar, grill and seating area.
-
There was another thread on here where someone was making Germy-inspired post-apocalyptic buildings, but now I can't find it. Anyway, I'm doing a set of my own and I am very pleased that I realised you can use the offcut bits from making windows and doors as connectors that allow you to extend walls. That was probably obvious to everyone else, but I take my wins where I can get 'em.

BTW: those "PA Mordheimers" are PERFECT! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
really nice army men conversions! looking forward to see more of them! Impressive that they look så cool, after the paint job!
-
Wonderful ideas with army men :-*
-
Glad you guys like them!
Dinohunterpoa, yeah, the Mordheim mercs are such good basis for conversions -- bits of them must turn up in everything I've made. The head and club arm on the left-hand guy are from a flagellant kit, I think.
In the background of my 40K setting, the indigenous humans of Petersen's World -- contemptuously called "Petes" by the Imperials -- have a medieval culture similar to Earth's Viking age. This was my excuse for using a lot of Viking models as natives. As Imperial presence and technology disrupts their way of life, many young Petes have moved to the Imperial-dominated cities, finding low-paid work around the docks. In the shanty towns, poverty and desperation mix with the tribal warrior ethos to produce violent gangs, like the two Petes seen in that photo.
And, of course, they make final brutal post-apocalyptic warriors without all that context.
-
Awesome fluff/background! ;)
-
Progress! Another stall for the market.
That just leaves one of the stalls I built over Christmas, and then I can start thinking about other elements to add.
-
Nice.
-
"Relics of a Bygone Age" is a SUPERB title for a book/movie/progressive rock album!!! ;)
-
Also saying "relics" covers up the fact that the poor vendor thinks the other word is pronounced "ann-te-kyoos."
-
I love this project, the way you are fitting in such an eclectic mix of figures that all seem to work so well together.

Thanks! Here, have another piece from yet another manufacturer! These barrel fires are from Wargames Terrain Workshop. They come in semi-translucent yellow resin; I primed and painted the barrel bits and gave the tips of the flames a bit of a red wash. Not bad at £1 for two barrels.

I've been quiet for a while (busy time at work) but I'm back! Here are a few new characters for the marketplace.
These models were a gift from Mason, and represent a merchant and his porters, arriving at the market after their long journey across the wastelands:
The barrels are from Ramshackle Games.
Here's a closeup of the guy with the yoke: (https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0eo3Zv40mJo/WSKMllRn0MI/AAAAAAAAa70/A7TTTGuq53cL0l0XlD7BgMzFb_CtP7qIwCKgB/s640/20170522_072434.jpg)
I'm thinking of adding a doctor's clinic to the marketplace, so here's a doctor, recently acquired from the LAF bits exchange:
And another guard made from a plastic army man:
Whew!
-
Strange but good.
-
Brilliant!
I love what you did with the yoke.
:-* :-*
Doctor Jeff is great too.

-
Strange but good.
That is pretty much what I'm going for.

lol lol lol lol lol

Another model from the LAF bits exchange and another container from Ramshackle. Flanked by her warbot bodyguards, an android princess haggles for valuable spices with a wealthy merchant.
(I guess this is a bit more sci-fi than post-apocalyptic, but the android is originally a Gamma World figure from 1983, so that's post-apocalyptic, right? Right.)

So she's a Gen 2 Synth that achieved sentience. No big.
Still loving what you're doing here.
-
(I guess this is a bit more sci-fi than post-apocalyptic, but the android is originally a Gamma World figure from 1983, so that's post-apocalyptic, right? Right.)
I think it's totally 80s HEAVY METAL MAGAZINE!
In other words: AWESOME! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
I love the new additions.
:-* :-*
When do you fancy doing a group shot of everything so far....?
:D
-
It might be quite difficult; the only place I can set everything up is not somewhere that the lighting is all that great, so I might have to pack everything over to a friend's since he has a proper photo studio. I'll see how it goes (or just bite the bullet and buy more lights, I guess).
Anyway, in the meantime here are some more trade goods, courtesy once again of pillar of the community Curtis at Ramshackle Games:

-
Curt, his stuff & your painting are all great!
-
Brilliant additions, that Ramshackle catalogue is wonderfully useful, isn't it?
8) 8)
I fully sympathise with the difficulty in taking pictures.
No worries, I was just being greedy and demanding more.
;)
-
All right! I have completed the original four market stalls and taken a few photos. Here's the group shot, and I'll try to post more shortly.

Absolutely wonderful!
I love this thread.

Great idea with the backdrop.
Where is it from?

It is from a novelty gifts shop thing called "make your own zombie movie" which I got in a charity shop for a quid
I have two more, which I wrote about here:

Blog post is now up. I don't think there are a lot of models that are new if you've been reading this thread, but I did finish the food stall:

I think I will always be adding stuff to this -- I still want to do a gate with sign, a clinic, some cages, a stage and at least two more guards -- but I'm going to say that the core of it is done.

This is wonderful. Love the dead bugs on the food stall.

Another fine example of capturing worn, corroded and rusted stuff. Just excellent!

+1 for the dead bugs. I bought a load from a cheap shop after last Halloween, based them ALL up for 1950s 'B' movie games. Never thought of your idea. Can't bear to rip stuff off bases, so I'll have to wait until after next Halloween.

Yes, my bugs came from the same kind of thing. I used some of the others to make swarms and things for D&D, but I'm particularly fond of this guy:

He's a bit crude, but memorable.

I've been away for a long time, but now that work madness has slowed I'm trying to catch up with some more post-apocalyptic pictures! Here are my Road Hogs, a gang of mutant pig bikers with a particularly theatrical leader. The models are for Wasteman, made by ThunderChild Miniatures.

Photos are a little washed out, sorry; I guess I overlit them to compensate for dark winter weather.
