Title: The Expanse- Netflix
Post by: Sir_Theo on January 12, 2017, 08:53:49 AM
Has anyone seen this series?  I've seen the whole thing over a couple of days,  really enjoyable! I haven't enjoyed a space TV show so much since BSG. I believe it's based on,  and fairly faithful to,  a series of books.

Netflix appear to have spent a lot on it.  The effects are great.  Acting isn't too bad either.  For the wargamer the cold war between Earth and Mars with the terrorist OPA is of some interest as is the tech weapons and ships.  Recommended!

I'm halfway through and I also think it's a lot of fun! Thomas Jane really nails his character well 8)
But my mate told me that if you read the books, then the series are a bit lackluster. Fortunately for me I hadn't heard of it before!

Ha same here!

Thomas Jane does have a great sci fi hair cut in it.

I am absolutely loved The Expanse.
Right now I am listening to the books.

The books are explained here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Expanse_(novel_series)

S1 of the Expanse is part of book one.
Some twists are a bit different but the mood of the books is very well captured.
Space Combat is very good done, more or less realistic from todays view!

Season 2 start in February, and everybody's favourite character - Roberta "Bobbie" Draper appears...

Ditto! Don't have Netflix, impatiently waiting release-to-disc of second.

I hadn't heard that, but that's the reason I've never read a Dresden Files novel, I liked the TV series so much.

It's weird, but I thought The Expanse had more buzz here; I've been wondering why I hadn't seen more using for gaming.

I do remember seeing the trailers, not getting very excited, picking up Season one on sale without remembering it, then going 'oh, yeah' when I did some googling. One must be careful of first impressions.

I've just finished watching the first series of the Expanse and I loved it.  The last three or 4 episodes were particularly good.  One of the things I liked best was the portrayal of the survivors of the Canterbury - they were so like some of my old Traveller crews.
I think the setting is enormous inspiration for gaming and I might try doing something in it for Rogue Stars.  Starship combat would be good too.
I'm really glad series 2 is coming out next month and I can't wait!

If anyone has a preference for a ship to see 3d printed pick a good looking one and I will fire up the printer and knock it out.

I vote Donnager - the Martian battleship

I watched one episode but couldn't get beyond the main guy's stupid little hat. It annoyed me immensely. If anyone can tell me it gets laser zapped in episode two, I might continue.

It doesn't, and there's even a backstory to it...
But that didn't stop me from enjoying it immensely (the series, not the hat).

The space private eye with the hat is clearly supposed to be a flawed character. His space smartphone has a big crack across the screen.

So I wouldn't sweat it if you think he's a prat. I think you are kinda supposed to.

The show is actually made by the Sy-Fy channel. I really enjoy the books. They are believable space opera, but not quite "hard" sci-fi, and like most science fiction are really about modern earth politics and society. They contain a lot of commentary and observation on the modern world. The book and show are different, but aren't they always? Just take them both for what they are, two different forms of media presenting the same story in their own way. However, that said, that picture of Bobby Draper above is the first I've seen of the character in the TV show and I'm not too impressed. She just looks like a typical actress, pretty, in good shape, but in no way believable as a bad ass marine. Why do Hollywood have an aversion to showing strong women actually represented by strong women? I've seen some female US Marines, and I've sparred with some big women at Kickboxing class, and that woman playing Draper doesn't look the part.

I might make it x wing game scale too if is not too vast.
Ships might be too big for that...

Bobby is already shown everywhere. Video and all.
The actress is 1,80m (OK not the 2m of the book Bobby) but still big enough, she is also a boxer. I am confident that she has the presence needed for the role.

I binge watched the while season 1 in a weekend. Loved it, a bit of cyberpunk, a bit of Red Faction, some hard Sci fi  (the Martian marines were so cool).

So much potential for gaming, I'm leaning towards 15mm scale I think. Maybe with ghosts of hefei or the department rule set

Not having read the books it needs a little more fleshing out at the moment.

Who the Martian Marines are going to be shooting at isn't entirely clear yet.

Yeah, I was thinking more dungeon, er, corridor/ship/port crawls ala Rogue Stars/TV7/whatever. Not that a few marines couldn't show up.

I could point to a few scenes, but I ain't doing the spoiler thing.  ;)

Ah, she didn't look that impressive in the picture, but looking at the link you posted I can see she's a better fit than I thought. Rant retracted, about her anyway, not about Hollywood in general.

Apparently X-Wing miniatures are nominally 1/270 scale, but they have done larger ships in 1/400 and 1/450 (ish) scale.

So at 1/270 scale the 46m Rocinante would be 17cm long.

Their Armada game doesn't go for a set scale, but the miniatures are

CR90: 150m 57.62mm
Nebulon-B: 300m 91.15mm
Victory SD: 900m 137.39mm
Gladiator SD:  500m 90.88mm
Assault Frigate 2: 700m 98.50mm (from nose to end of engine bell)
MC80 Home One: 1200m 185mm-ish
Imperial SD: 1600m 207mm-ish
Raider: 150m 57.81mm
MC30c: 580m 110.64mm
Gozanti: 53m 36.71mm
GR-75: 90m 41.64mm
Interdictor: 600m 160mm-ish
Liberty: 1200m 176.00mm-ish

So, after playing with excel I would suggest the following miniature sizes to match FFGs Star Wars games:-

Ship/'Real' length/Proposed Scale/Miniature Length

X-Wing

Knight 20m 1/270 74.07mm
Rocinante 46m 1/270 170.37mm
Stealth 100m 1/400 250mm
Scopuli 150m 1/450 340mm

Armada

Knight 20m 1/1512 13.22mm
Rocinante 46m 1/1719 26.76mm
Stealth 100m 1/2136 46.81mm
Scopuli 150m 1/2530 60.47mm
Nathan Hale 270m 1/3346 80.69mm
Donnager 475.5m 1/4600 103.37mm
Canterbury 1000m 1/6767 147.77mm

I came home from my weekly RPG session last night through what passes for a full scale blizzard around here and was so hyper and alert that I couldn't sleep and decided to watch the first episode.

I was not disappointed!1 I really like it, and had to force myself to not let the second episode start immediately after, since I still have to work today and 0130h is late enough on a school night... ::)

But I fear this weekend I will be binge watching as it looks great and the story is intriguing enough.

And sorry teach, but I absolutely loathe those little hats too.  They seem to be the headgear of choice for small time card sharks, ticket scalpers, petty criminals and/or sleazebags.

None of which categories you're in I'm sure. Of course! Definitely! (Do I still pass the course?) :D

But remaining with the hats; a fedora is just as bad IMHO... It should only be worn by swashbuckling archeologists, period. ;)

But enough with the hats already; on with the scifi!! lol

Er, I'm a bit rusty but 0.2918/46=157.64 so the original model is 1/157.64 scale
157.64/270=0.5838

So you need to print the model at 58.38% size. Is that right?

Thanks for the recommendation :)
Watched the first three episodes - rather good. Really like the bits in space / aboard ship. Thought the initial episode with the ice-collecting ship was very well done. Found the scenes on the space station/asteroid Ceres, a bit less well done - kind of sub-Bladerunnerish gloom and grunge, but mostly reminiscent / derivative of the original Total Recall (never saw the remake) with its rebellious underclass of workers and mutants in an industrialised, dystopian off-world sink estate...
Also the lead hard-boiled detective is such a hoary old cliché, it feels like a bit of a cop out (haha) - kind of wish they'd gone for something a little bit less predictable. But I guess that's down to the novel(s) the programme is based on.
Overall, enjoying it.
Will inhale a few more episodes tonight :)

Gave up after two Expanse novels. Thought it was all re-fried tropes: i.e. the hard boiled detective with soft spot for missing dame, the plucky colonist/Belters vs the oppressive UN Earth government. The quirky roguish spaceship crew caught in the middle. The secret bio-weapon that makes hive mind zombies in space...  Once the basics were established, I knew exactly what was going to happen. That said, there's more than your average depth to the plot so I think the story makes for a good SF show. It's better TV than book - if that makes sense - and I'm looking forward to the next season at Amazon.

Awesome series and reasonably close to the novels (First season adapted most of the first).  I agree with tomcat51 that Bobby looks too pretty but so does Amos :P ;  It's television.  The screenwriters did a solid job of interpreting the characters but made them less nuanced than their print counterparts.  Well worth watching and I'm quite eager for season 2.

I'm binging it this weekend. Only 2 more episodes of season 1 to go. I'm loving it... 8)

As for the detective: I was immediately reminded of Sean Connery in Outland, although I admit it was a long time ago I saw it.

The parallels with Total Recall are obvious of course. But there are lots of tropes throughout which, for me at least, do not detract from the big picture.

I might go for the books next...

Finished Leviathan Wakes and part deux is on its way to me right now. 8)

That was a cracking read and I must admit that it was just as well that I saw the series first, because it would have been impossible to live up to the book. It still did a stellar job though and I've enjoyed it immensely; I've seen much, much worse screen adaptations and I will absolutely be watching season 2.

I think Agis has the right of it though; this is prime tabletop skirmish material! :D

Having been on holiday for a week, I inhaled books 2 and 3, 'Caliban's War' and 'Abaddon's Gate'. Very good, albeit very very strongly American in flavour - a little too much oo-rah-ness in places. But gripping for all that.

A word of warning though. If you're picking up the books (like I did) to follow on from the TV series, be warned that the TV series only covers the first half of Book One, 'Leviathan Wakes'.
I was a little way into Caliban's War before realising that I'd missed the second half of the story of book one - although, to be fair, it's fairly easy to get the gist of what happened in the missing part that I hadn't seen or read...

The FIRST season mainly covers the first half, yes.
There's bits of book 2 as well as Leviathan wakes in season2.  Needless to say, if you've already read the books, some things won't be a surprise, but they way they do them might.

My gaming bro' 'bought' the second season for streaming, and he rewatched as I binged over 4 or 5 sessions at his house. I kept bubbling up with 'I just can't believe how GOOD it is! I've been unable to get into SO much of late, things I should love, but this...'

I'd hooked myself on the first season by buying the DVDs and sharing with friends; I'll probably STILL get the second season as well.

It is on Netflix UK.

I thought it was on SyFy in the US earlier in the year.

The books are very good (being an assistant to GRRM probably helps).

The first series covers about half of the first book, though from US reviews earlier in the year there are elements from the second book in series 2.

FINALLY!  :D

I got hooked on season 1 because of this thread, and was really miffed when Netflix didn't air season 2 when I required/demanded/begged for it...

On the plus side; I've been able to read all the Expanse books up to the latest one in the meantime.

I very much liked the series, but I just love the books! Normally I'm not too thrilled about a cool book expanding (hah) into a series, and in the process hugely increasing the scope of the story (to keep it interesting?), but in this case, it just works like a charm!  8)

Can't wait for the next installment. And watching season 2 won't help in that regard either...  ::)

+++EDIT+++ I just checked my app, but now season 1 seems to have completely disappeared! I'm hoping that's just temporary, in preparation for them adding season 2. The website says it should have been available since September 8th though...  :(

Hate it because watching it while doing hobby stuff has had me glue my fingers together more than once as I'm concentrating too much to what's on the screen.

Update: it was available on Netflix last night after all, so I am ashamed to admit that absolutely nothing was done last night but binge watching the first four episodes of season two...  :D

Finished S2 last night. No spoilers but the whole thing was pretty awesome. More money was spent this series, and you can see it on the screen.

Season 2 is the dog's nuts.
I got hooked on the books ages ago and the visualisation has not disappointed.

Totally hooked binge watched season 2 in two nights. I Never binge watch anything.
Normally I have the TV on in the back ground when I'm working late. For this I downed tools and took a coffee break until 4am.

Just re-read the thread, looking of piccies of the printed results of ships. Did I miss something?

What I didn't miss was getting all excited ALL over again. Really. Giddy just thinking about.

Oh, and the part about 'not getting antsy for S3...' Rats!

You know? With the number of recent, and I'll admit good, series that DIDN'T hook me(I never got through the first seasons of BSG, nor Dark Matter), when I started the first disc, I figured 'I must be alone in how much I like this.' Shot that full of holes, didn't you?

Ahh the Roci in its gas-hauler mode. I think you got her spot on.

Now that is an interesting way of dealing with IP. Well done them.

Just finished the series, very good.

Some bits were a bit brief (and I have forgotten how the second book finishes, I guess the series is about half way through the second book).

Now have to wait a year....

Of course it will be interesting to compare how I feel about it and the next iteration of Trek at the end of the month.

What would be a good price for a 3d print of the ships?

Probably more than I could pay in good conscience, especially as I think you'd be shipping Royal Mail to the colonies, but it's my birthday, and the financial realities of retirement will be sinking in soon enough, so put me in line!
