Title: Tabletop-buildings affordable dungeon [pics page 2]
Post by: midismirnoff on January 13, 2017, 05:14:57 PM
I have a 100€ to spend on a 3d dungeon, you know, with walls, not just the footprint of the rooms/corridors. I've seen Ziterdes and Dwarven Forge, can you tell me what's the best? Or is there anything else like that?
Thanks a lot.

I like the look of these, not sure if they are still available though

Nothing really touches the older Dwarven Forge hand-painted resin stuff (some sets available on their page) but you won't get much at all for that amount of money.  How big of a dungeon are you looking for?  100 euros will get you a room or two and some passages for starting out, but a full fledged dungeon can be a huge money-sink.  You could consider going the casting route, etc.

Have you thought about buying molds and casting your own in plaster. That way you can have as much or little as possible. Hirst arts would be a good start

Honestly a 100 euro won't get you more than a few rooms' worth. If you want anything approximating a dungeon you should plan to spend 2000.

Let me chime in with the Dwarven Forge lovers. Great stuff, no work, just unpack and play!
I think I spent more than Spook's $2000, since having it shipped here to France nearly doubled the cost. But I won't even let myself look at the invoice to remind me what it cost. <g>

I've seen a lot of great homebuilt 3d dungeons. If you can invest the time, that will be even more satisfying. Some folks use Hirst molds, some even use cardboard (example 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd7gd8rP7Xo), example 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Lew2zhrxOE)). It all depends on what you want to get out of it.

A few examples of Dwarven Forge from recent Pathfinder games:

If going for the plaster route, maybe tint the plaster with black pigments? This way you don't get those awful white chipping which is so annoying with plaster.

I echo the comments above about cost. Sadly €100 is not going to get you a worthwhile dungeon in resin or plaster.

For that sort of budget you need to be looking at the Fat Dragon print and fold scenery:

http://www.rpgnow.com/browse/pub/346/Fat-Dragon-Games?filters=0_2220_0_0_0 (http://www.rpgnow.com/browse/pub/346/Fat-Dragon-Games?filters=0_2220_0_0_0)

They have a wide selection and if you get one copy properly printed on card at a printers then use that to get colour photocopies done they are very cheap.
Rather than card print and fold you can cut the images out and glue them to cut foamcore walls and floors for a good effect. The artwork is excellent.

Dear sirs, thanks for your comments. I have to say I'm quite abashed by the cost of the dungeon you're prospecting. 2000€ is far too much for me. I think I'll the mold hypothesis, and the print and fold one. Yet dungeonstone is not that bad. Do you think there's an European reseller for those dungeonstone goods?

You can now buy an entry level 3D printer for £200 (I had a leaflet for an offer of a free 3D printer if I brought 50 inkjet cartridges!).

I waited and saved until I could afford one and have been printing this excellent 3D dungeon stuff out from Printable scenery. What I like about it is that it clips together so no drift during play and you can make sections of rooms and corridors and place them in play in a single go as characters explore. I also like the working doors and secret doors.

Here's a link to their range.

I have Dwarven Forge and I was looking to supplement it with some Dungeonstone. I was wondering though. How good is it? Is it durable? Will it hold up to use? Does it take paint well?

Hi, I've been watching your thread and asked how much would it cost to have it all printed, but I wasn't expecting such a low cost for an entry level 3d printer. Which one do you have? Is it working fine?

In the future, consider wording your thread/post a little more accurately then.  You asked what the "best" 3D dungeon was - the answer is the Dwarven Forge resin line.

The more cost-effective solutions are plentiful.

I'd like to know what you propose, and sorry for the poor (now edited) thread title.

I heard GeBoom from http://www.shiftinglands.com/ is releasing a very cost efficient dungeon pack soon.

It's not exactly DIY, but you have to crop the components (walls, pillars and floors), what is not to hard as it uses a metric grid system. Maybe this alternative is worth a look foryou. The video is in German and about a prototype though. But i guess he'd be more than happy to answer your questions personnaly via his side or at the Tactica.

I haven't used any of their fantasy/medieval range, but I'd second the Hirst Arts mold suggestion. I've got one of their Sci Fi ones and since plaster is pretty economical you can make lots of scenery pretty economically.

The Dwarves Forge stuff looks stunning, but far to pricy for my budget.

You could always go the scratch building route. Cork tile is very cheap and looks really good (makes quite convincing stone) once it's painted up.

Curious to see what you go for.

It's also worth noting that it's pretty common to find people selling pre-made Hirst Arts dungeon components on eBay.  A great way to search for them is to actually use Dwarven Forge as the search entry, since most will use that in the title.  These pre-cast ones from people can be a lot cheaper.  At one point I had found a (admittedly heavy plaster cast) large set for something around $30-35.

Still, buying a 3D dungeon is going to be tough - making one would be feasible if you're willing to do a lot of hobby work.

Eventually I got myself 100€ of Tabletop Buildings Dungeon. It is not that small:

I'm painting it with a full aerosol technique, and I quite like what is happening:

Nice. Needs a bit of grime/moss and maybe some hand-painted alternate stonework, but it's looking good.  Is it plaster-ish?

Indeed, it's WIP shot, but the most boring part is over!

Personally, I'd suggest going with the 2.5D solution and use things like DMScotty, DMGinfo, and Wyloch as a starting point (All are on youtube).

One of the problems a full 3d dungeon has is difficult play-ability because the full walls get in the way, and while the shorter 2.5D walls aren't as directly impressive looking, they're still visible and keep a good chunk of the look while being far easier to deal with in handling miniatures.

Eventually I got myself 100€ of Tabletop Buildings Dungeon.

Looks like they have a IGG fundraiser: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cavern-terrain-set-game#/

Unfortunately, the IGG pics look terrible.

Midi, if the painting didn't take too long, you should contact these small companies and offer pictures of their painted product in return for product. Your photos are very clear and informative.

From IGG site:

"The challence would be the time.. This project is designed for about 30-35 very large Cave Sets. It will take about 6 months to finish. That means every 2 weeks i can finish 3 sets. That in mind i have enough time to finish orders that are currently processed and start/finish other projects that will come along. If this project somehow produce much more perks than the 35 sets that i have in mind it will take more time to finish. Please do keep in mind the 3 sets per 2 weeks.

As of our terrain is hand made and painted, it may take some time to fulfil orders - This may mean orders being shipped at different times, and as we ship within europe, this may mean some peoples perks may be received before others."

I wish this small company well but 6 months is not in my timelines for terrain.

Hi dolls, and thanks for the feedback. I have added some color, tomorrow I'll wash and pigment. Mark is a nice guy and casts wonderful dungeons, yet he's really striving to keep up with orders. I'll think about the pics for goods, it sounds a lot of fun.

Hi dungeon nerds, I'm starting to weather the dungeon, here's a pic about the various pj stages

The weathered bit is obviously waaaaay cooler:

Those work well. Add some tattered banners on the walls, some dungeon furniture, and it's a moldy, creepy 'home-away-from-home' filled with loot, glory and monsters.

Now let's see those 'in-game- pix.
