First post on this thread (having seen the excellent work on this thread I feel a bit of a fraud ___^).

Group shot of three Warlord Games Sherman I tanks.

Subsequent to finishing these, I discovered that this unit had Sherman V tanks only, not sure if I want to change them from Guards Tank Division to something else.

Get off - your work is great. Very glad to see you over here on Lead Adventure, and looking forward to seeing your updates. You'll generally find a pretty appreciative and constructive audience of wargamers here  :)

The jerrycan stowage on the rear of the Crusader is extremely neat. Wish I'd thought of that (or had the modelling skills to carry it off!)

More please  :D

They look great. Love the Cromwell

I'm feeling in need of a Matilda for my burgeoning Western Desert collection. Sadly Rubicon don't make one, or that'd be my first choice.
There's the Blitzkrieg resin model - which looks very good, but my experience with Blitzkrieg is that the actual product is not quite as good as the pictures, especially in terms of casting around the mould line - and the Matilda was one of their first models, so I'm figuring the mould will be worn as well.

Warlord appear to offer more than one, in resin and plastic versions.

Any recommendation?  :)

I have the Warlord  BEF Matilda (high heels and bustle) so not suitable for the desert. There was some filling along the join between the track units and the nose, it was rather complicated because of the detail and the closed nature of the corners.

They do a desert version but I do not possess one.

There was some discussion about a plastic kit at the toy show, but it is thought it was the 1/72 scale kit squatting on the 1/56 scale display.

Having set the way back machine to http://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/matilda-in-high-heels.html (http://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/matilda-in-high-heels.html)

"There were a few minor problems with the build, the tracks had some slight misalignment where the mould came together, the resin needing to be filed down to flatten the tread (you can see the results below), there is a prominent seam under the nose which I have still failed to correct and the tread unit to body join needed filling (the most difficult part being the sides where there is a prominent row of rivets adjacent to the join, meaning I could not file down the join without having to add the rivets again)."

Nice work UVS.
The Warlord Kubel actually looks rather good. I have the Perry one. I guess because it's scaled for the Perry 'true 1/56' figures, it's a bit more diminutive than the Warlord model which is nominally 1/56 scale, but will be designed to work with their more regular sized 28mm figures...

I like the Carden-Loyd carrier. Might have to add one of those curiosities to my 8th Army force...  :)

The Warlord Kubelwagen is nice(the separate wheels are better), I just have not got round to finishing it, and the Perry one will fit better with their Afrika Korps figures.

The Carden Loyd from Empress is remarkably similar to the Warlord one (but cheaper).

The Warlord one looks well off in terms of its dimensions. In 1/56 Company B make a couple of  Matildas but again it doesn't look quite right. Personally, I went with the Tamiya 1/48 version. As they will be the only tanks on the table, it makes no difference and I find they seem to fit well wit my Eureka Australians. I know you have included ne or two 1/48 kits in your collection so you  may wish to consider the Tamiya Matilda.

Very nice work  btw UVS!

A little surprise for Operation Sea Lion games, Flame Fougasse markers.

They were a product of the Petroleum Warfare Department and functioned as a one shot flame thrower.

These are markers, so do not represent the actual appearance.

A single Allied Fuel drum from Rubicon was assembled and then cut diagonally. The two halves were then glued to a Renedra 30mm base.
Numbers from the Warlord Games British tank number sheet were added to the top segment and an identification number taken from their M4 sheet was added to the middle segment.

A Perry Miniatures Eighth Army figure for scale and another as a third crewman.

Stowage is from the Rubicon Allied Stowage set. Additional stowage to be added once I have sorted out the crew figure.

The additional tanks are possibly not right for North Africa. You learn as you build.

The good thing about LRDG is there's a lot of leeway ... you can always just say, "It's a local modification," ... cos most of it was.

Looks like another great little kit UVS. I just wish the detail on the Rubicon crew figures was a whisker sharper. They’re all a bit ‘soft’. Hopefully this is something they’ll improve with practice... i just find it a bit odd that they manage to get incredibly fine detail very crisply moulded on vehicle parts, but their human figures are always very slightly amorphous looking...

Looking forward to the CMP 15cwt truck hopefully very soon...

I was hoping for an improvement on the Studebaker driver. They do remind me a bit of the PSC 28mm Soviets. It is still early days for their figure sculpting. Sculpting soft stuff is very different to hard structures.

I am looking forward to the CMP, I will use few of them for the LRDG (not completely accurate, the 30cwt Chevrolet being the most popular vehicle).

Thanks.

Empress use a metal filled resin which loves superglue, and once again I did not get the pieces aligned quite right, hence the Milliput/greenstuff either side of the glacis (I always say I am going to use epoxy for chassis - hull assembly, but forget when I start...). Very little conversion required, it is one of their SCW 20mm versions. I have just replace a few bits  I have lost/misplaced and added stowage. Still more to go, a bucket on the rear tow, some soft stowage etc. I have a Bolt Action Blitzkrieg helmet pegged for the turret.

As an experiment I am going to use Citadel grey spray for the body, just to see how it goes.

So the Panzer IB is now "finished" (under flash I have noted that there are some "grey" spots on the wheels and chassis - they will need painting).

This vehicle is for Operation Sea Lion, hence it is the 20mm Breda armed version modified during the Spanish Civil War.

The tank was undercoated with Citadel Chaos Black followed by Humbrol Dark Green spray. The track and wheel treads were painted with a mix of Vallejo Black Grey and Hull Red. A mix containing more Hull Red was used on the ice cleats and the spare track links.

Citadel Athonian Camoshade was used on the body and turret, and Citadel Agrax Earthshade on the wheels and tracks. Unfortunately the shade dried with a mixed gloss and matt finish, so I used some Humbrol acrylic matt varnish (49) to get a common matt finish.

At Salute this year I bought a number of the new Rubicon Models personality figures, including Zhukov and Timoshenko.

Here is the sprue, leaflet and supplied bases (I used a Renedra 25mm base for my build).

And a size comparison.

It does look a bit small, and of a more realistic stature than either the Bolt Action or the Bad Squiddo figures. I should have taken a photograph of it next to a Perry figure.

At SELWG I bought a small 28mm scale terraced house from Sarissa Precision.
It is a nice simple kit of MDF and card that goes together nicely.
I used Rustoleum Rust effect spray to provide some texture to the outer walls (having masked the roof and windows).
Army Painter Skeleton Bone spray was used for the walls, the bricks were painted (over a Humbrol Desert Tan mortar) individually with Vallejo paints from a wet palette.

It is definitely a building to fight round rather than through (being one up, one down). It is also tiny, I think it will fit inside a room in one of the Woodbury houses.

Definitely going to get some more, they are reasonably cheap so is the sort of thing to tack onto another buy.
Title: Re: UVS WW2 WIP: Opel Blitz 23/12/2018
Post by: Ultravanillasmurf on December 23, 2018, 08:49:26 AM
I recently bought the Warlord Opel Blitz from The Gameskeeper in Oxford.

I had previously bought the Tankograd book when the two kits came out, but the Warlord one was the first one I had got round to building.

The kit goes together well, with the exception of the bonnet/roof which could do with being able to be kept separate so you can paint the cab interior. I made do with leaving the doors off (the radiator grille overhangs the bonnet so the bonnet/roof part needs to be assembled at the same time - advantage of the Rubicon slide mould cab).
William Killian for scale.
The kit comes with printed clear material for the windows, the inside of the door has a tiny lip to take the window (I know it is there, but even under magnification I could not see it - your eyesight may vary). Having fluffed cutting and shaping it to fit, I gave up and left it off - either the driver cleans the windows religiously or they are broken.

The Balkenkreuz was added because the side view was rather dull, there is a photograph on page 16 of a Blitz with the Balkenkreuz - though it points out that it is rare.

I have noticed a few areas that under flash photography show gaps in the weathering, I will need to fix that.

Post by: Ultravanillasmurf on January 23, 2019, 06:48:51 PM
The crew of the Sherman VC "Hercules" gained fame after their epic battle against a Tiger Tank in the Normandy village of Nemea.

Most of A Squadron were either beaten back or casualties, but Hercules made it into the village. There are two versions of what happened next.

In one version, even the fabled 17 pounder could not penetrate the Tiger's impregnable hide. Eventually, the crew scored a direct hit down the muzzle of the 88mm gun, blowing out the breech and detonating the Tiger's ammunition.

In the second version, Hercules out-manoeuvred the Tiger. first jamming the turret and then immobilising it. They then moved in to beat the Tiger to death at close range.

To commemorate their victory, the track from the Tiger and other tanks that met their end from their 17 pounder were draped upon the tank.

The Warlord Games Sherman VC has been fitted with the spare tracks from the Rubicon Tiger tank, plus track from the Rubicon German Stowage set.

A gun travel lock from the Rubicon Sherman I Hybrid replaces the moulded on travel lock. A cross brace was added so it looked more like the real thing.

As this is a fictional vehicle, I decided that the Division Insignia had been painted out by the censor.

Great work but that is rather a bad mould mismatch issue on the puttees on the right leg. Are they all like that?

No, that appears to be the worst. I did not notice until I was taking photographs.

I did have to tidy a mould line off most of the helmets.

This is the only other photograph I have of them,.

:( It is surprising that every sculptor makes the same mistake with the early war webbing. That entrenching tool holder with the wood handle strapped across it was not manufactured and issued until sometime after Dunkirk.
Here is a photograph of the complete early 37 pattern webbing as worn :

You cannot say that it is a 1908 pattern entrenching tool carrier, as they had a completely different method of attaching the wood handle (down the leg with the bayonet).
If anybody wants any more evidence check out Karkee web:

My first thought was "ho hum...".

My next thought was to have a look at my limited reference material.

Quote
Osprey Men At Arms 354: The British Army 1939-45(1) page 39.
"As initially issued the new equipment had no entrenching tool; the old Implement, Intrenching, 1908 had been declared obsolete in 1923. A pattern not dissimilar to the types in use in France, Germany and many other nations was introduced as the Implement, Intrenching, 1939 pattern. This new tool was not well liked as it hung down well below the waist and obstructed the legs, particularly of shorter soldiers. The problem was remedied in 1941 by reintroducing the 08 tool, in a redesigned carrier and newly listed as the Implement, Intrenching, Pattern 1937. (This is a good example of how pattern dates can cause confusion - a 1908 pattern tool reintroduced in 1941 and then designated pattern 1937)
You can see the Pattern 1939 entrenching tool handle in plate B1.

I do have the "to 1908" Osprey book somewhere, I will have a look.

In Empress' defence, these were originally sourced as VBCW rather than WW2:
Quote
Mid 1930's to 1940 British. These will work for some BEF regiments in France and home defence during theoretical Operation Sealion.

Oh well, back to storage for them (Vodkafan - I got a nine litre "Really Useful Box" from whoever Figures In Comfort are now with four 33 50mmx25mm cut outs for I think £25).

It was not a complete write off, I also spray painted the four Under Fire Rhodesians at the same time. Now to revise the buy list for Salute.

I have just assembled the new Rubicon SDKFZ-2 Kettenkrad half track kit.

It is a lovely kit of such a dinky vehicle.

Not quite sure what I am going to use it for (it is too small for use with an M134 minigun), but it was supposed to be fielded in North Africa.

Any suggestions?

Decent scatter terrain, jump off marker for chain of command, or as a vechical to race to the exit in games were to get points for getting of a board edge. A one way trip for a flamethrower team on a suicide mission.

I wondered about that, I did find a photograph of  one towing a Pak 36. The problem is the crew (Wikipedia says a five man crew, Warlord has three in their packs - I do not have the Bolt Action list to hand).

A single 20mm Flak cannon would work as well.

It is a very nice kit, and can build ten different versions.

This is the last variant, the 1939. It has improved armour and carries more ammunition (by deleting the rear machine gun from the turret).

I needed a Warlord Chi-Ha as an opponent for the Rubicon T-26 1939 for use in What A Tanker! I picked one up from Dark Sphere in London.

There was some flash on one of the sprues.

The kit went together okay, though the absence of part numbers on the sprues was a bit annoying.

The non duplication of the the commander's cupola and the turret machine gun are the only components that prevent the assembly of both the original Ch-Ha and the larger ShinHoTo turret with the 47mm AT gun. At some point I might try and build a second cupola.

As this is to be an opponent for the T-26 1939 for games of What A Tanker!, it was built with the large turret (when I get round to building a T-26 1932 I will need an original Chi-Ha).

Most examples appear to have been painted into the three colour camouflage, however I went for a plain green paint job.

I added the flower logo as otherwise the only marking was the Japanese numeral one on the hull side.

That's come up nicely. I do like the flower decal.

Though I confess after doing early  war German, Soviets and Allied late war - the idea of a colour scheme with more than one colour is actually very appealing, and the Japanese one is very colourful and attractive.

It is a very nice kit. There are none of the problems associated with some of the other Warlord kits I have built (and have not finished).

This was something I wanted to complete quickly, the tarpaulin was not needed, but I thought would make it slightly different.

On the subject of complicated paint jobs, I have a line of late war German AFVs, not limited to Konigtiger,
Panzer IV (see above), Waffentragerr, Jpzr 38(t), P43 bis which I have started and not finished.

The story behind this particular paint job is that the vehicle has been undercoated and issued to the troops. Balkenkreuz and vehicle numbers were added before issue. This example had a damaged exhaust silencer repaired with asbestos tape.

Nice Hetzers one and all. I reckon Rubicon dropped the ball not using the chassis for a Pzkpfw-35(t)/ LT vz.38. Yes,Warlord do one, I know but Rubicon’s models are far better engineered so if given the choice....it’s always an east one.

The chassis is different (in a Sherman I-IV Vs Sherman V style). The JPnzr 38(t) is about half a metre wider than the Panzer 38(t).

I too would prefer a Rubicon version, I suspect that the existence of the Warlord version put them off. The Rubicon Sherman V project shows they are willing to re-visit projects where there is an existing Warlord kit.

Warlord's Sherman V is poor (nowhere near as good as the Warlord/Italeri Sherman I), I have not heard anything bad about the Panzer 38(t) - I have the Zug box, I have not built one yet, so I have no opinion.

Fair enough about the Hetzer chassis.

Good to know about the Warlord Pz 38. Some of their kits are indeed quite decent, others are fiddly and most are over or , at times, poorly engineered vis a vis  Rubicon equivalents. I still have a Warlord Stuart I bought ages ago that's still incomplete after a year or so.

Funny thing is that in the time I started and gave up on the Stuart, I knocked off another Tamiya Matilda which has a vastly higher part count, including link and length tracks, required minor modification and had after-market, multi-media, parts added. Good engineering is the key. Then again it's always been the case that building a Tamiya kit is a lot less painful than building an Italeri one.

The problems with the Warlord Italieri kits is many of them are upscaled 1/72 kits so have 'issues' as a result.  Not least being their tiny crewmen!  Some are properly re-tooled and better than others but their chosen system for tracks is terrible in most cases.

I've jsut built 3 Cromwell/Centaurs adn a Sherman V.  Generally the hulls are good, detail is sharp and 'adequate' but the moulded on tools and tow cables leave a lot to be desired.

Tracks, in both cases, suck.  The track joins are  front and rear - exactly where you can see them - and the curvature means less detail on these areas too.

Some models fall together, they just seem to flow.

Others, not so (the KV-1/2 and IS-2 being cases in point).

Nice Jagdpanzer 38t, I'd imagine that now Rubicon have hit most of the big mid-late war stuff (Pz's III, IV, Panther, Tiger, Tiger II) they'll be looking at early war, so I guess another Pz 38t isn't impossible. The WG kit isn't bad at all, thought the rivets are somewhat over-sized.

Is it too much to ask for plastic PzI, PzII and early PzIII ?

I believe the Rubicon Pz III range starts with an Ausf E, makes sense as the earlier models had tiny production runs, while the E was the first produced in quantity and encompasses vehicles armed with both the 37mm and (later retro-fitted with) the L42 50mm. They haven't been released quite yet, but I believe their release is immanent.

How early a Panzer III do you want?
Rubicon have Ausf E to N in the pipeline.

I'm looking forward to that. And once I'm cashed up, replacing my Warlord PzIV with the Rubicon D-E.

We all know that Bad Squiddo do a range of British Women of World War 2, this is my first attempt at painting one of the Women's Land Army figures.

First WW2 post of the New Year (two flavours, other New Years are available).
A BA-3 Heavy Armoured Car, a plastic kit from Rubicon.

Using a Sarissa Russian Outbuilding as cover, the armoured car provides support to Bad Squid Soviet infantry.

My only addition was a tarpaulin on one mud guard.

No decals yet, but then probably only a number in a square. It also needs weathering.
