Great painting! But it is 100% Afghans. This is not the Uzbeks and Turkmens from Bukhara.

Cuprum, you are - as always - technically correct.  These are the Afghan horsemen I commissioned Empress to make as part of their 'Jazz Age' range.  However they are, IMHO, the best sculpts for the period and general area (done by the blessed Paul Hicks), and work for me as a compromise.  I might get round to commissioning more accurate sculpts one day....

This is certainly not a problem  ;)

Especially because in the army of the Emir of Bukhara had a lot of Afghans who came to defend Bukhara from the godless Bolsheviks.

In Bukhara, the main nationality - Uzbek.

For Uzbeks nature of the widespread use (along with the traditional turban) national cap - skullcap.

The gown used as outerwear. He was always a long (necessarily below the knee, most often - almost to the ground).

Never has short sleeves. On the contrary - the sleeves are often very long and going to "accordion" on the hands.

Main shoes - boots made of soft leather. At the beginning of the 20th century - with a high heel. Especially when a man on horseback. Trousers are always tucked into boots. Slippers are only used at home.

Therefore, an Uzbek and Afghan is very different in appearance.

Tx Cuprum. So - Afghan coats not long enough, some have short sleeves, both wrong for Bukharans. Poshteens wrong too? Waistcoats over robes wrong.

Um, by careful selection of figures and some greenstuff, it should be doable.

Any more illustrations for inspiration would be great.

Yes, greenstuff - fully a recurring major "deviations" in the design the figures (except for typical headgear)
Now I do not have access to my "archive" photo. If you want, I can post them later.

I did not understand what the word "Poshteens"...   :?

It's an Afghan coat made out of sheep or goatskin with the fleece on the inside. Can be with or without long sleeves.  Great for the NW Frontier, and the long sleeve version was also very popular with university students in the UK in my day!

Sorry Cuprum, it's as Sir R says. My wife actually had one back then!

Lovely, but what a nightmare to paint. I wish there was an app into which you could feed a an image and it would spit out a convincing representation that you could paint on a 28mm fig.

When I give coats like these a go I start by looking at them at arm lengths distance and squint, trying to capture the overall impression of colours and patterns. It seldom does the trick though.
