Title: Spy rulesets?
Post by: supervike on January 28, 2017, 04:45:24 AM
Just curious if there are any rulesets that represent Spy type movies in the vein of the Bourne films, or even James Bond.

So, emphasis on covert actions (like stealing a hard drive, or planting a listening device).  Stealthy hand to hand or knife fighting, limited gun play.

Maybe one 'agent' against a group of cops, soldiers, minions, etc.

I'm looking for small skirmish type rules, solo play would be awesome, but not mandatory.

Any suggestions?

Black Ops

Small elite units, clever AI stealth mechanics (very suitable to solo play), modern spycraft, thrilling missions...

Take a look at this review: http://nathanrussell.net/2015/11/review-black-ops-by-osprey-games/ (http://nathanrussell.net/2015/11/review-black-ops-by-osprey-games/)

And this one, with an AAR: http://pijlieblog.blogspot.com.br/2015/11/need-to-know-basis-black-ops-reviewed.html (http://pijlieblog.blogspot.com.br/2015/11/need-to-know-basis-black-ops-reviewed.html)

Also... PULP ALLEY

Can be easily adapted for modern spy games; take a look a this awesome AAR with in-game explanation of the game mechanics: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=72590.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=72590.0)

7TV 2nd Edition

Bond-like action in the 60s, but shown as a TV show:

There is also Spy or Die Trying - more of a boardgame but could be adapted for minis. It uses an interesting stealth/alarm system.

Black Ops and 7TV get my vote as well.

It's no longer in print, only the miniatures are still available at http://www.killerbgames.com/ (http://www.killerbgames.com/)

I wrote the Geezers Royale rules. I am Killer B Games. ;)They have all the usual spy movie elements: Gadgets, Car chases, secret bases, seduction and they allow you to field a small number of agents against a larger group of henchmen while searching for espionage counters.

Will have to checkout Geezer's Royale.

Spy or Die Trying is great can be quite tactical. Look for it on Ebay I picked up a new copy for around £8 posted IIRC

7TV2 is fab captures the genre perfectly.

Alas at present we are unable to provide PDFs. Only hard copies. Sorry about that.

Well, maybe in a near future, right? Since you may have the digital files of the ruleset, making them into a PDF format product may be not that difficult, and you may get lots of new customers this way! ;)

Thank you for all the great answers!

Osprey has been getting alot of my attention lately (frostgrave, Rogue Stars) So I think Black Ops is a must.

I will certainly check into the others, even if I don't play them, I strangely like reading through rule books.
