Title: Guildball by Sigur
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on February 07, 2017, 02:09:02 PM
Hullo!

Over many moons past I painted quite a lot of Guildball stuff. Pretty much every single team by now. :)

I started with the Butchers and the Morticians. As usual with a test mini:

Once that was green-lit I did the rest:

The Morticians seem like one of these typical things many mini designers fall for when they're new and only do digital sculpting: the minis are spindly as heck, don't go together too well and are just plain insane to glue. Very glad Steamforged learned since then and that problem got better. But on the Morticians it was bad. In fact so bad that they redid some of them.

Well, that's the first two teams. :) Stay tuned for more!

Damn Sigur, those are just lovely!  :-*

I love how you do your reds as well; not least because whenever I add any white highlights to red, I just end up with pink.  :?

@Major_Gilbear: Thanks very much! yeah, I went a bit bold with that red. :D That was back when I was massively into pre-shading with black and white and then apply a layer of stark colour and see how it turns out. :D Afterwards I just used white highlights. No mixing with red at all. I wouldn't really do that much any more (well, maybe I would if I felt like it). But it's fun.

Fishermen!

Shortly thereafter I was given Captain to paint (Season 2 model) as well:

I know the technique, but have never been bold enough to try it! Maybe after seeing your reds I may have a go.

Lovely work on the other two teams as well - really very impressive. One could almost imagine that you do this for a living! ;)

@DeafNala: Wow. I fully expect all further comments to be on this level of praise. :D Seriously, thanks.

@Major_Gilbear: Yeah, it's pretty fun. Another thing that played into the idea was that I asked WAY too little money for the first two teams and I wanted to get them done fast. Turns out it's not really faster (as you spend a lot of time with the black/white preshading) and I still undercharge for GB teams. :D But yeah, the minis are nice and the guy I paint most of these for organizes wargaming events each year. Thanks for the general comment. ;) (http://www.veganfactoryfarming.net/a_living_flinstones.jpg)

As I don't have any new pics of the Engineers (at least none that would show much new) I'll go on posting the teams I painted in the past.

Brewers!

(see, bit of OSL playing there on the helmet and a little glass bottle fanciness going on there as well)

Later on I did goals for some of the teams as well. Butchers were the first ones to get one...

Yeah, a bit yucky. Some people commented that it's a little bit 'out there' and it probably is. The research for this one wasn't too much fun either. There are some things which leave you a bit queasy after the google image search to get something to look 'right'. (My top5 in this regard: "rotting flesh maggots", "horse skin sores/diseases", "gutted pig", "burnt skin", "octopus" because these things freak me out!)

The tree is by Eureka I think, as is the butchered-up pig. All I had to do was find a chain that fits, somehow put it on the carcass (the pig can be taken off the tree for transport, so I had to bend a branch so you can hang the pig on there) and do the base. For additional effect I added a little bucket which I think I made of some pencil cap or a Vallejo dropper bottle cap or somehting like that filled with blood and with a little piece of entrails hanging over it for over-the-top effect. Because some blood is unsettling, over the top blood and guts is less unsettling and more gimmicky. Like a realistic explosion on a film has impact while Micheal Bay explosions with helicopters flying through and sparks flying around just is a spectacle. So I went with quite a lot of icky stuff to start getting diminishing returns (the game is pretty cartoonish after all), but not go all-out gory. Because that works very, very, very, very rarely I think.

...and then the Brewers:

The barrels at the bottom are resin cast, the barrel on top actually is from the Empire plastic cannon set. Turns out you can turn that into a very pretty barrel. All you need to do is carve in wood texture and so some more cutting. The wooden beams and wedges to keep everything in place are made from chopsticks, the beer mug is from Avatars of War's plastic Dwarven Barbarians set. I also added a cloth wipe in the tartan colours of the Brewers to tie the thing together with the team and to leave no doubt as to whose goal that is. :)

So yeah, hope you like them. :)

Thanks very much, Paleskin!

Next on the list were the Alchemist's Guild team. First, as always, the test mini:

..and then the rest:

I really dig the colour scheme. If you'd ask me which was my favourite GB team I painted so far I really couldn't tell.

They also got a goal afterwards:

That one was rather straightforward. I got the flame/smoke bit resin cast from the customer, along with the request to do "something" with it. Maybe I could find a big test tube/petri dish thing, but I couldn't and it would have looked just way too huge, so I went with a simple crater (base, milliput, some pebbles, done). For additional detail, and to tie it together with the Alchemists team I used the pink/magenta colour I'd used for all the chemical stuff on the models on the cloud as well, and I strew some pieces of torn apart cloth in the team colours around the crater along with a single shoe (it's a bit burnt up at the top), indicating that the whole thing looks like an unlucky Alchemist.

Along with them I also did some additions for the Morticians and Butchers which had been released in the mean time (Bonesaw and Tenderiser):

Yeah, and that's that. The latest team I just finished basing, so I'll get to post pictures of those guys either tomorrow or some time soon. Hope you like the pictures!

Bit starker colour scheme there. The big dude with the little dude strapped to his chest is one of the most interesting mini designs I have seen so far.

I really like the Union team too - I found this team's sculpts to generally be way more delicate and spindly the the rest of the range personally, but you've done a good job to make them stand out rather than just look busy.  :)

It is just a way of expressing enthusiasm. I got in the habit of bold capitals for words of praise. If I have nothing positive to say. I say nothing.
In your case, you will wind up with varying intros to a VERY WELL DONE!

@Major_Gilbear: Cheers. :)

@The Voivod: Thanks for looking in regardless, Sir! Always high praise indeed if people who don't care for the game much comment. I have to admit that I haven't played it either and it isn't terribly high on my to-do list either. A few weeks ago I read that it's slightly based on this crazy medieval football game which is basically people punching each other until a ball rolls in some goal, all while wearing 16th century-ish clothes. I saw a documentary on that a few years ago and found it rather fascinating and it makes me understand Guild Ball a bit more now. And I hear it's a great set of rules. I just have so much on my to-do list and this game is a bit below these other things.

@Steam Flunky: Thanks very much!

@Pijlie: Cheers, Sir!

@Breazer: Thanks for dropping by, buddy. ;)

@DeafNala: I see what you mean, and I hope I didn't appear cross. It's just a distinctive style and I don't think we met online before. As I said: Each comment is appreciated, especially as you seem to put some effort into getting things done a bit different.

Hullo, I'm back.

Late last year I did two more teams. First of which was the Masons:

...as well as a few more additions to existing teams:

All very cool models really. It's a real shame I didn't take a better picture of the Butcher lady in the far right, because she's maybe my favourite Guildball model so far. Excellent face and I'm a bit proud of the hair too (even though it doesn't quite show in the picture). Now for the bad part: The name of the character is Fillet, as in "a piece of tender, high quality meat". Which has to be the worst name for a female character possible. And if I notice that, it's got to be bad. Nothing to get mad about, but rather weird (especially for a company who are setting up their own paints range and rejected the name "chocolate brown" for that colour that's always called chocolate brown unless you're GW because it might be interpreted as racist. The mind is boggled.). Maybe I'm just weird about it because I like the model so much though. :D

Alright, let's bring this up to date. Here's the Hunters team!

The camo pattern was requested by the customer (well, some kind of woodland-y camo pattern was, the exact look was up to me), which gave me a bit of a headache integrating it into a colour scheme, but I think it worked out in the end. :) On this team I also added some fallen leafs to the bases, in part to cover up the traps a little bit. Doesn't actually cover them up of course, because it would be daft painting them and then covering them up. It's like with painting camo. You want it to look like camo but you really don't want it to work like camo of course. ;)

Oh yes, and the bear is huge. Probably the nicest bear mini I know of too, that I have to admit. Oh, and i like the hair on the red haired lady in that team. About the crouching bald guy: completely bald guys are boring. Usually I paint some stubbly hair on them or some sort of half-bald stubbly hair (my favourite). On this one I just painted some tattoo over half of his face and scalp. Works as well for making the mini a bit more interesting. :) I've also seen the Avatar arrow been done on him, but I don't really dig that look. I also never watched the show. So yeah, swirly, tentacly tattoo it was. Hope you like them!

@Breazer: :D That's very nice of you to say.

@Andym: Thanks, Sir! Nah, they come with the Hunters models, One of them's got the net one, some other dude's got the steel ones. What are they called again? It's Fangeisen in German. Is is bear traps?

Here are some more mascots for the Butchers (hog), the Fishermen (Octopus), the Alchemists (Snake) and the Union (Turtle):

Took a bit of a gamble on the colour scheme of the Turtle. It had to fit the rather gaudy Union scheme. In the end I trimmed the shell in gold, because I think this is exactly what the Union dudes would do. ;)

@supercollider: Thanks very much! Yeah, I never played Guildball myself, but I do have an incredibly unsuccessful BB team. They get outmaneuvered by Chaos Dwarfs and beat up by Wood Elves, but they're mine. :D

I'm not big into it, but after my quick dive into BB back in 2014/15 I can see why many people consider it to be among GW's best games (along with Space Hulk). Guild Ball is said to have great rules as well and it's taking off at the local club here. Maybe I'll have to get a team sooner or later. :)

I really never planned on painting those models, since I find the sculpts goofy looking.
Then I see what a good paintjob on them does.
They really do have their charm, don't they?

Another project then? Sigh, so little time...

@mellis1644: Thanks very much! :)

@The Voivod: Yes, they are goofy looking. ;) And I'm not a big fan of goofy Fantasy myself (well, 80s/90s goofy fantasy I'm a fan of). And i'm not a big fan of digital sculpting. That being said, the Guildball minis are really good for the most parts. Some of the faces are dodgy for some reason. Some of the earlier minis were a nightmare to put together, namely the Morticians (bad fit, bad design by someone who never considered that these would have to work in the physical world as well, ridiculously thin bits which don't have to be that thin ... the usual things people do if they got too much money, too much enthusiasm for digital sculpting and no experience in it or miniatures making), but they got WAY better. They even redid the most problematic Morticians minis so they're less anger-inducing when you put them together. The newer models are just joy to work with I have to admit. Very well cast, perfect fit, easy to put together. Of course the models are freaking huge. If you're the sort of painter who likes that that's an UP of course as well. :) Cheap they certainly are not, but unless you collect ALL the teams it's manageable. And of course the pesky work of putting them together and painting them can be outsourced. ;)

Here are the Engineers!

Just a few single minis added to teams I painted earlier. Mostly "veteran" versions of existing minis, Hag for the Fighermen and Brainpan&Memory (the creepy puppet player and his doll). Really fun minis. :)

These are just early WIP shots of course. Problem is that I have a rather tight deadline on those figures (Dec, 20th. Yikes!) The Blacksmiths are going to be extra-dark in theme, so that helps painting time wise. :p

Wow! Every team looks amazing. Your NMM is awe inspiring, i dread painting metals because they always look dull and lifeless. Any tips or is it just practice, practice and more practice?
Title: Re: Guildball by Sigur
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on December 14, 2017, 07:10:27 PM
@Exiledadmiral: Thanks very much, Sir! Yeah, basically it's all about practice, practice, practice, isn't it. :) But as a general rule of thumb I think it's fair to say that when doing NMM it's never a bad idea to have stark contrasts, otherwise your faux-metallic surface just looks like any other surface. As long as the darkest bits are black and the lightest bits are white I think you're doing well. Work in many 'breaks' with surfaces like a sword or something to get the maximum contrast or if you got a large surface and don't quite know what to do with it - throw in some kind of weird angular reflection that doesn't go along any of the lines the rest of the model has. Like on the big sign thing on the Blacksmiths or the sawblades on the one guys in the Farmers team. It doesn't make much sense in terms of how light actually works, but it catches the eye. Hope that helps. :) I have several different appraoches to NMM because different models call for different approaches, but I usually adhere to the above. Of course when doing a realistic model or a showcase thing I pay more attention to where I place reflections so they make a bit more sense as opposed maximum effect in a way that the light might work. Oh, and of course the very first thing when doing NMM is picking an imaginary point as light source, but that goes for any kind of miniature painting, not just NMM.

Title: Re: Guildball by Sigur
Post by: Exiledadmiral on December 14, 2017, 08:36:29 PM
Thanks for the advice! Good tip about the angular reflections, should ease my mind when I can't think where to put the reflection. Do you use plain black and white or mix some colour in?
Title: Re: Guildball by Sigur
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on December 14, 2017, 10:47:18 PM
It depends really. In this case I added a little mid-brown and blue to better show the weird, beaten and dead 'ard looking quality of all the metal used by these guys. If there's enough colour on the resdt of the models I just go with white and black (maybe a little blue or brown or even red in case the overall tone of the model calls for it).

Alright, here's even more pictures, this time of the Masons&Brewers terrain pack!

So many details. Such wobbly casting. :D As you know I praised Steam Forge a lot for how much they improved on their metals after the initial two teams up to them doing my favourite metal models (quality-wise) on the market. Then they did this switch to wobblyplastic and it feels like we're back to square one with especially this set of Farmers Guild figures. Anyway, they're starting to take shape. Just takes ages. :D

Update on the Guildball figures:

As you can see the human members of the team are done now so I started adding the special balls and ..well, the chicken and other things. :D Hope you like them!

@Andym: Thanks very much! The thing is that I started a bit late on these guys, so I better be quick! :D

Of course the batteries on my cam were empty last night, so no more photos at this point, but I shall supply them shortly! Hope you like the team!

Like the guildball mini's very much. They're somehow different. Amazing paintjob Sigur.
