Title: 15mm Normandy Panzers
Post by: Genghis on February 11, 2017, 03:17:30 PM
Whilst I’ve posted on the VSF & Future Wars threads, for some reason I never got around to putting my FoW stuff up here.  Having just (almost) finished my Panther platoon, I figured I’d rectify that situation.

Here’s my Panther platoon, representing the 1st Bn, 24th Panzer Regt, attached to the 116th Panzer Div during its fighting in Normandy.  (Moving the barrel cleaning swabs to the engine deck, along with the spare track & wheels on the turrets were peculiarities of this particular Bn.)  I’m awaiting 24th Panzer Div decals to arrive before I put the decals on, but I’m happy enough with them for the time being.  (Resin w. plastic detail Battlefront kit.  The barrel swabs are scratch built & the zimmerit was added with green stuff where I cut away the moulded swabs from the left flanks, along with 2 of them getting replacement towing cable sections.)

While I’m at it, here’s my Panzer IV platoon & Kompanie command, again, awaiting decals.  (Plastic Battlefront kits.)

Lovely work! Is it me, or the pictures, but the panthers look a bit shiney?
Love the MkIV's, but they are one of my favourites.

Very good.

The Panthers do look a bit dark, but I suspect it is the lighting.

Are they really 15mm scale? Those "upscaled" pots of Citadel paint are very convincing ^___^.

Nice one, I admit I baulked at the idea of putting GS Zim on mine, laziness decided that it was 'after it's discontinuation'.

Thank-you.

They are a bit shiny.  I've been burned with matt spray varnish going dusty grey one too many times, so am using Vallejo brush on acrylic matt varnish, which leaves a somewhat satin sheen.  Not ideal, but it doesn't wreck my miniatures.

It's partly the lighting, but they are a bit darker than the Panzer IVs.  That said, some historical photos of that bn do show them quite dark in overall tone, with much more green/brown than base dunklegelb showing through.  (Those are the special 300ml Citadel paint pots...   ;) )

I only zimmerited (is that a verb?) the left flanks where I'd cut the barrel swab tubes off, most of it was already on the models.  It worked reasonably well, and looks okay in the photo, but up close you can notice the difference.

I get where you are coming from. Testors Dullcoat can be a tad tricky.  o_o

The Vallejos fine, but I've found both the Winsor & Newton Professional & the Tamiya matt varnish sprays to be reliable (I currently use the W&N).

Hmm, much as I'd love to have them properly matt, I don't want to risk the sprays screwing them up (especially given how slowly I paint - those 5 Panthers took about 2 months, not counting building...).
