Title: Bye, comfort zone! - Super Dungeon Explorin'
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on March 03, 2017, 03:00:50 PM
Hej, last year I was asked to paint a bunch of Super Dungeon Explore figures.

SDE of course is a pretty darned popular dungeoncrawler boardgame featuring chibi/super deformed style of miniatures referencing all kinds of things, from 8 bit video games to cosplayers. Very fun little miniatures and a metric ton of expansions and whatnot.

For me it was the first time painting anything anime-looking, so quite outside of my 'comfort zone' when it comes to painting miniatures. First I was to paint a whole lot of heroes:

Those take quite a long time to paint, as they're all very different and such. All of them are painted in the colour schemes as presented in the artwork.

Right, that was the first batch. Took quite a while, but they look rather pleasing I think. :) Hope you like them as well!

Can't say that I like chibies outside of certain onlf vgames too much, but that painting really is marvellous.

Funny I just started painting some of these myself. However, mine pail into nothing in comparison to your work. Very impressive and love the bright colours.

Don't care for chibis at all, but the brush work is excellent.

Thanks very much for all the comments!  :-*

@matakishi: Cheers!

@Khadrin Stonetooth: Thanks muchly.

@Schrumpfkopf: Cheers. I can see why you wouldn't be a fan. After all a Schrumpfkopf is pretty much the exact opposite of this style of mini. :D Thanks very much. It's always extra nice when people who don't like the minis still enjoy the paintjob on them.

@mellis1644: Thanks very much. That's the cool thing about these minis - you can really look how much you can ramp up the colours AND I can get out colours I don't use as often (mostly pink and orange). Did you notice how much of a shift in painting approach it takes to paint these minis (which in part is why I called the thread what I called it)? Very, very different stuff, I find. Especially as with the latest batch I went straight from early 1980s 25mm Napoleonic Minifigs to these. :D

@Elbows: Thanks, all the nicer that you dropped a comment. :)

@Andym: Cheers, it's pretty amazing what a white basecoat can do. :D

Right, here's the next batch done right in the last week of 2016. A bunch more characters plus a bunch of pets, which are really, really cool mnis. :D

Having done a ton of characters/heroes now it's time to paint some more baddies. :)

You reach levels of perfection with brush & palette that most of us can only dream of attaining. You have even managed to make the more saccharine of the minis appealing. They are a WONDERFUL collection of little characters. FANTASTICALLY WELL DONE!

@DeafNala: :D Thanks very much, Sir! Eloquently put as always.

Well, I've been away for a while, hence the lack of WIP piccies. So here's the whole Batch finished:

Man, those are fantastic!

Also, I'm way behind on my SDE expansions.  I didn't recognize half of those heroes.

Delete from "outside" through "vgames" and that would be my response.

Top work.

I'd love to see a WIP video of how you did the flame effects.

@Professor Witchheimer: Thanks! Always good to get accolades from the scientific community. :D

@dijit: Cheers! :)

@Duncan McDane: Thanks very much. Getting praise for paintjobs on minis people usually aren't into much is always extra nice.

@Dentatus: Thanks muchly, the same as the above goes for your comment. :)

@Andym: Thank you! Yeah, those SDE minis allow one to go really crazy with some colours you usually wouldn't use much (pinks and oranges above all).

@Karadek: Thanks and yeah, they do release a LOT of stuff, don't they.

@Conquistador: :D Cheers, all the more thanks for taking the time to have a look and comment!

@Luddite: Thanks, Sir. I don't really do videos (or tutorials any more for that matter. Incredibly time consuming and I think that tutorials and guides are WAY overused these days in miniature painting.). It's really just some airbrush stuff followed by some basic shading and highlighting by hand. To be honest, I'm not particularly happy with the flame effects. It's really just bright colours and smooth-ish transistions, which always looks cool, but isn't really super-skilly in terms of painting. :D White, yellow, red, some careful shading by hand (that maybe is the only tricky part, because it doesn't make much sense, you just gotta get it to 'look right'), neatening up of the orange/yellow and maybe some "highlights" with darker red.

Hej, back on Super Dungeon Explore with a WIP shot:

Apart from all these shroomfolk I've got 4 Truffle Pigs, 3 Hidden Shrine heroesund, one Arena Champion, Salt and the Forgotten King to do. :)

Mushrooms are well on their way, same with the Truffle Pigs. Once all those are done I'll go on to do the character minis. Hope you like them so far!
Title: Re: Bye, comfort zone! - Super Dungeon Explorin'

Okay, one more WIP before bedtime. Here are the truffle pigs:

full size: http://www.tabletopwelt.de/uploads/monthly_2017_07/wip2.jpg.7dc4d2da24e31e14fdac21da6f37c9bc.jpg (http://www.tabletopwelt.de/uploads/monthly_2017_07/wip2.jpg.7dc4d2da24e31e14fdac21da6f37c9bc.jpg)

Those are basically done. Maybe some neatening up here and there, but overall they're done. Except for the bases of course. Due to the sheen and the colour they do look quite delicious, don't they. :D Maybe I'll give them a little matte treatment so nobody tries to take a bite out of these piggies.

I better turn away from this thread now lest I be won over to chibies and start a new fantasy collection!  :-*  lol  The mushroom dudes and boars are awesome. Hope someone is having a ton of fun with these on the table.
Title: Re: Bye, comfort zone! - Super Dungeon Explorin'

@Spooktalker: Well, you know that you need to rebuy your whole Fantasy collection in chibi style again anyway, so better start sooner rather than later. ;)

So these here are mostly done now:

http://www.tabletopwelt.de/uploads/monthly_2017_07/wip3.jpg.0b73bc92ba08d6b87426aac5cad719a3.jpg (http://www.tabletopwelt.de/uploads/monthly_2017_07/wip3.jpg.0b73bc92ba08d6b87426aac5cad719a3.jpg)

Dots on the big mushroom chaps need to be done properly.

This one's next on the list - Salt. Still very WIP, but I guess you get the concept:

In addition to being BEAUTIFUL creations, they are becoming increasingly tempting. Only the hundreds of miniatures that crowd the Vault keep me in check.
Keep up the FANTASTIC WORK...I enjoy the temptation. VERY WELL DONE once more!

@wminsing: Thanks very much. :) They do take quite a lot of time to do, even though they may look like there's a lot of airbrushing involved. Still, all the detailwork and all.. it does take time and effort. And 'getting into' the topic, because it's very different to what I paint usually of course. :)

@DeafNala: Thanks, Sir. Your comments are always most welcome.

Right-o, I have something finished to show:

So these are done. Final neatening up and all will be done later when I have a final look at everything before varnishing.

This leaves me with three minis to finish for this batch. The Arena Champion (currently WIP; pretty far on that one actually)...

...the Hidden Shrine Infiltrator (she's WIP as well, but pretty early stages. Just some base colours, some initial work on the hair and face)...

...and the Forotten King (the tall chap in the right, he's still just covered in primer):

Look at al the pretty colours....
Awesome job. I love the mini's too. They're just so different from the usual fair and look likes tons of fun to paint.

I'd really love to get into this game but it would be another game that would never hit the table.
I do enjoy looking at fun and terrific paintjobs such as these...

@Gargobot: Hullo. :) Thank ye, Sir!

Everything looks great!
Tell me, did all that SDE stuff you painted so far go to the same client? If so he/she must have such an awesome SDE set.

@Gargobot: Thanks very much! :) Yup, all for the same gentleman. Yup, his collection looks awesome (and I don't use this word lightly) at this point. :)

Heyhey, working on a new batch of SDE figures:

Boy, these take long to paint. Even though they're just lowly monsters. First time I seriously regretted going NMM on these SDE minis. ;)

@DefNala: :D Thanks very much! I did enjoy indeed. Saturday to Sunday we spent at a small-ish town, witnessing more or less folklore-y things...

Drinks and good times were had. On the Sunday I had dinner with the parents and stuff. Yeah, good times.

@Nord: Thanks very much! Yar, I think I mentioned it before - it's always a bit weird getting into the mindset to paint these minis, especially if I painted say historical 25mm figures right before that. But it's all in the variation, isn't it. :)

Done! Lighting's still a bit naff, but I hope that you like the paintjobs!

Awesome paintjobs on awesome mini's.

I've been tempted to get some SDE just to paint. Those mini's are so much fun.

@Breazer: Thanks for the comment! It's basically our alpine (and boozed-up) version of zwarte Piet (got slightly repurposed for more effect and fun in recent years).

@Michi: Yar, I was surprised to see it (and they made a hell of a lot of noise with it too :D ). First time for me at one of these parades/runs. Good fun.

@The Voivod: Cheers! I paint a LOT of these for customers and still I cartch myself looking at even more SDE figures. You gotta get 'into' it at first, but then it's fun to see where you can cut corners on these minis and what stuff you have to pay real attention to and all.
Title: Re: Bye, comfort zone! - Super Dungeon Explorin'

Ah yes, the Krampus Gang and their Fiery Ride of Death, a most ancient tradition still honored today in its original and unchanged way!

Those trolls(?) look amazing! Maybe I should get some stuff for SDE, I think that might lend itself well to my painting style...
Title: Re: Bye, comfort zone! - Super Dungeon Explorin'
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on December 14, 2017, 10:34:35 PM
@Gargobot: :P That's a nice thing about that whole Krampus stuff - there's barely anything about the old tradition left, at least with the clubs it seems. So more cosplay and performance than violence. No less boozing though, it seems. We met that ganz (sans costumes) before and after the "parade". Perfectly regular young ladies and lads, with their skinny jeans, their baseball caps and all. Yeah, come to think of it... those minis should go well with your painting style. You do the colours and such stuff. Should fit nicely.

Yikes, it's been a while, hasn't it. But now I'm finally working on another batch of SDE figures again. :) Mostly baddies and critters, but some characters are in there, such as lovely Pudge here:

Still rather unpainted I have Gruesome George, 2 Grabby Houses and Dust Coven Necromancer.

So that's that. :) Hope you like the minis!

That is such a lovely toxic green! I'm usually not a fan of green zombies, but in this case that almost glowing radioactive skin tone seems to be the best fitting colour choice.

@ork56: Thanks very much! It's just a completely different thing and with each batch I do I have to get back into that kind of painting again. Usually gives me a mild whiplash for the first two days or so, then it goes smoothly. :D

@Ajax: Thank you!

@ink the troll: Cheers! I wasn't sure about the green at first, but after all these figures are supposed to be colourful, and actually they're quite a bit creepy looking, so the gaudy colours defuse that a little. :D

@mellis1644: Thank you! The good thing is that it doesn't have to, just send me your minis, I'll get them painted at reasonable rates!* (*I'm contractually obliged to the above statement; as a human I feel very embarrassed about it. :p ). On a more serious note: thanks very much indeed. It's all just practice and experimentation and figuring out what works for one. However, painting these chibi minis of course always means a bit of a change in painting style. So much so that it sometimes gives me a bit of a whiplash when I go straight from painting 1980s 25mm Napoleonic minifigs to Super Dungeon Explore figures. :)

@Schumpfkopf: All the more - thanks for dropping by and commenting! Getting positive feedback from people who are generally not a big fan of the subject is always extra nice.

@The Voivd: :) Cheers! Yeah, they're a joy to paint as well.

Okay, this batch of SDE figures is done with the following:

@DeafNala: Thanks very much for your comment, as always. :)

Righto, here's a WIP of part of a Project I've been working on for a few weeks now; another batch of Super Dungeon Explore.

From left to right - King Sprout, Kasaro To, and King Starfire:

Title: Re: Bye, comfort zone! - Super Dungeon Explorin'
Post by: Daeothar on May 09, 2019, 10:54:36 AM
Yes; the painting is absolutely gorgeous!  :-*

I have the game, and bought it years ago with the intention of eventually playing it with my daughter. But after a few test plays with some grown ups, I found that the mechanics were a bit too complex for playing it with a 5 year old.

However; she has spotted the box on several occasions now, and each time was completely mesmerized by the chibby/manga huge eyes on the miniatures. She's very familiar with that look because of the inevitable exposure to toys and cartoons featuring the same.

Also, each time she has expressed her desire to play it once she's old enough (I explained that it was still a bit too difficult for her). Obviously based solely on the looks of the minis, so I could possibly use them with a game like Hero Quest, which we have played many times already.

So, even though I had been planning to sell the game off, I will probably not, and, time willing, will eventually paint all of the miniatures up too. I can only hope mine will even remotely stand comparison to your excellent work though...  ::)

@Bloggard: Thanks very much! :)

@Daeothar: Much obliged! My niece (she's 15 months old now) really, really digs them as well. I never played the game myself, but I hear very good things about it. I'm in this weird position that I paint miniatures for all kinds of boardgames for other people, so even if I'm interested in the games I won't get them, simply becuse I know that I'd have all the stuff again, and this time 'just for myself'. When it comes to boardgames to play with the kids I hear that Mice&Mystics is really good too. Let me know if you need help painting the SDE figures! ;)

@Andym: Thanks very much! :) Yeah, it's an acquired taste, I suppose. :D All the more - thanks for commenting.

Right, back to chibi ninjas!

Again for the Super Dungeon Explore board game. There's a big Oni coming up as well, but that one of course takes a little bit longer to finish.

After that I think I'm done with green for a while and will go for some red things:

I wasn’t much a fan of the chibi aesthetics either, but your painted examples really sold the miniatures.

Yo, peeps. Happy Sunday afternoon. It's almost dark outside already. Kraziness!

Anyway, here's Rex and the Fire Flowers (band name!):

...and here's the Bill Men (get it?):

Can't say I painted platypuses before. Certainly not anthropomorphic ones in armour. With such prominent teeth. There's something unsettling about a beak with teeth, right? But then I think anything non-human with human-looking teeth is kinda unsettling.

Hope you like the ...creatures above. :D

Anyway, next up: Frog Knights! Riding chicken-like birds.

@Bloogard: Once again, many thanks! Getting comments between updates is always nice. :)

Right, here's a tiny little update!

...mainly because I wanted to test something on the camera. I have to admit, that I'm glad when I get done with gold NMM again and go back to painting more 'realistic' things again (well, next on the schedule: Space Orks. :D ). But really, I'm very, very happy that I get to do these here. If there's one thing I like about miniature painting/gaming it's all the diversity we get in styles, minis, companies, rules, etc. and I'm very glad I get to do pretty much all of it! I wouldn't mind doing Space Marines for a long time, but it's all about shaking things up. Of course the fact that I do a wide variety of things means that I'm not a 'household name' in any genre really (and that's probably not the best thing in terms of 'advertising' and whatnot), but the range of stuff I get to do is cool. Couldn't be happier and fingers crossed that things stay that way.

Tomorrow I'll do a bit of an experiment - attending Comitatus' wargames club (who are located in Salzburg, Austria) Late Fall event for the first time. No painting workshop, no showcase stuff. I'll just go there as ....well, basically a punter. (basically becaue it was a very short-term decision on my part because I happen to have the time) However, for the first time in foreeeeever I'll be at a wargames show as just that. I even might get to play something! The experimental part of the whole affair is that I'll do the travelling back and forth (3.5 hours each) on the same day. Let's see how that goes. If there aren't any updates on this or other threads for the next weeks it means I ended up in a ditch next to some Autobahn. Good thing is that I won't have any showcase minis with me, so those won't get damaged if that's the case.

Anyway, hope to write a nice report of the show once I return and not be too dead to get some painting done on Sunday. I hear there's going to be a bit of a GW-/Fantasy overhang to this (as opposed to Austrian Salute run by the same group in March, which I usually attend). Gonna see Warcry and all of that. And I'll deliver some finished minis and pick up some new ones people want me to paint.

Right, update time!

I opted for a group shot this time, because it's good for morale, covers up individual little problems, and just looks pretty (colours! Yay!). Basically the big purple bear's done now (just needs a final overhaul on the golds) and the big bunny Executioner is new.
That leaves me with getting the Fairy Dragon painted (it's a big one too), as well as a whole lot of treasure chests and Mimics, as well as some japanese looking temple lanterns.

Apart from that I spent about six hours abroad last Saturday. Here's my travel report of Comitatus club's Late Fall Battle Day:

https://www.battlebrushstudios.com/2019/11/show-report-late-fall-2019.html (https://www.battlebrushstudios.com/2019/11/show-report-late-fall-2019.html)

Just a small event, but really nice to see the guys, see some nice tables, and all of that. At the same time Vienna ComiCon was on over in Vienna. I regret nothing.

@Reed: Certainly is! Which is one of the reasons why they take so darned long to paint. :D I never played the game myself, but I hear it's a really fun dungeon crawler. The only problem is that the company who makes it seems to be in a bit of a rough spot after a kickstarter miscalculation or something, so I'm not sure what the availability is like in the years to come.

Heyhey! Still on the SDE figures, but this is the last one on this batch - the Fairy Dragon Glimmerwing

*phew* Got them done in time for the 1st of December (as scheduled), so I allowed myself to paint some of my own stuff over the weekend (10mm TYW Dragoons x2, Cuirassiers and Harquebusiers).

Anyway, I really love these group shots of SDE minis when a batch is finished. It's just an explosion of colour and contrast and pleasant shapes, colours and effects. Bold, pleasant, fun.

Hope you like them!

Good morning, people of the world.

Here's another WIP shot of the tortoise gang:

full size image: https://i.imgur.com/h43zXNM.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/h43zXNM.jpg)

Not that much new (since I had to squeeze in a little other thing I had to finalize), but I got the cannon turrets on the backs of the canoniers done and got a chunk of work done on TESTUDO TOWER (the boss, quite clearly). What's left to do on him is mostly finishing the top of the shell and some of the stuff on top (in the back of his shell there's a mining cart full of cannonballs as ammo, bolted to the shell and held in place with a big rubber band looking thing) and some other details (tongues, the "KEEP OUT" lettering in the front of the howdah on his back and so on). After that I'll have to do the bases on all of these chaps. And some general neatening up.

And then I'll be done with the last batch of SDE figures (at least until another lovely person decides they wanna have their SDE collection painted by me), which is kinda bitter-sweet. I think I started working on these in 2016? 2015? Extremely satisfying to work with, and they're one of these projects which pulled me out of my comfort zone and which I believe made me a more capable and well-rounded figure painter. The thing is that I paint ALL THE THINGS. There are people who only paint Space Marines, or only paint Warmachine stuff, or only GW stuff, or only historical stuff, or only 15mm stuff, or only single miniatures, or only armies, or only large scale figures, only showcase figures, only "tabletop standard" stuff - I do it all. Which I'm really happy with, especially since people of all sorts of genres seek out my services and so on. Which of course I'm very thankful for. And yet - there's SO much more stuff out there. At a convention last year I met a lady who does doll customization. Cool, cool stuff. So much material knowledge, such very different approaches. I'll never do it I suppose, but it sounds cool. Somehow handicraft things are just good. Making things. A while ago I used to watch a series of youtube videos by a Swiss(?) guy living in Germany who makes tools by hand. Cool stuff. There are many cool things out there. Things which computers won't do for us and which don't happen digitally.

Oh well, I better get these figures done swiftly, so I can move on to the next of the many projects I should be working on, preferably at the same time. Which is a bit stressful, but of course makes me very happy. It's very, very humbling. I don't deserve as much luck as I have really. :D Anyway, it's late. I better go to bed. G'noight.

Thank you! :) Certainly unusual. Each time I start working on another batch of these (usually I do something entirely different right before that, like 25mm Napoleonic Minifigs or soemthing like that) I'm hit with a kind of 'painting style whiplash'. :D

Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on May 15, 2020, 10:04:45 AM
@The Voivod: Thanks! Yeah, as I said - bit different to paint, but very satisfying. I'm a bit cautious about getting into the game myself due to availability of some of the expansions. But either way, it's said to be a cracking game. These tortoises for instance have this special rule that turns them into shell markers if they're killed. Which then the ones with the cannons mounted, the bigger one and the ones with the long arms can pick up and throw at the hero characters, all to different effects. Just a bunch of fun ideas and fun miniatures. There's a similar game which was released a bit later called Arcadia Quest. They go in a similar direction.

@Bloggard: Just late night rambling. :D Cheers though.

Kinda different as a batch of SDE figures as compared to others which were very individual figures. The glowy rocks are spawning points. Anyway, good body of reptilians, that. Especially with Testudo Tower as boss.
