Title: A viking Knarr
Post by: tomrommel1 on March 06, 2017, 04:01:58 PM
This is a new project of mine. I want to do a viking Knarr ship. compared to the famous longships these are shorter with a wider beam as they were intended for trade. They were also used for exploring and sometimes raiding , or is that the same for vikings?
They were used for things like discovering the Americas for example . There is a 1?72 version of a Knarr by Germania figures . but non for 28mm figures. So the question to begin with is what scale would be right for 28mm figures 1/54, 1/56. As I have to take the measurements from the Germania ship I am open for scale . What would you do?

My two cents.
Up scale the measurements by about 1/3.
Play around with it till you like the look.
Also if a war gaming model,
you want to make it playable.

So now I took the measurements of the 1/72 model . When using the 1/56 scale for 28mm figures I get a length of about 21cm . That looks about right. I will have to do some trails about the right hight of the sides of the ship to accommodate for the base hight of the figures. Expect a few pictures tomorrow or the day after.
As for now I will do the model in Styrodur ( expanded polystyrene ) as a test . Have never done a ship in this material before.

I will take pictures of every step of the build for later reference as I would like to do different ones in different sizes to use as fishing boats or smaller traiders
