Title: My foray into Malifaux (23/5-17)
Post by: TheCaptain on March 11, 2017, 10:52:17 PM
So I finally picked up some Malifaux minis and the rules. Figured I'd give 'em a read and try to get my gaming group interested. The first mini I picked was the Carver (which I then found out is only for a certain scenario and not for 'normal' play?...). Still I love the mini and it was the first thing I wanted to paint up.

Nice work.  Always liked the Carver mini, and I find it maddening that they don't release a "general use" stat card for the guy so you can use him in normal scenarios (as far as anything in Malifaux is ever "normal").  Seen people proxy him as Killjoy or a Teddy, but that doesn't work with everyone.

Thanks! I started up the Collodi crew and have so far finished the wicked dolls. I love the voodoo look to them.

Came out nicely.  I really need to do a set of those (and a Teddy) one of these days.  Got a Widow Weaver sitting around waiting for them so she can play at being a summoner again like she was in the older edition.

Nicely done! :-* That's quite a wee collection you're gathering! I didn't realise just how full of character the Malifaux range was.

Same here, they're absolutely gorgeous! I think your paintjob on some of these mini's may have tempted me to dip my toes in soon  :o

Out of interest, how did you find the assembly on these? I've heard there's a lot of components, even on the smaller models, that's probably the only thing putting me off so far.

First off, thanks for the comments. Second the assembly is a slight pain, there are a lot of very small components on some of the minis. I had to use a pair of tweezers to set some of them. Rami's gun for example, the barrels came in three tiny parts, one of which broke as I tried to get off the sprue and forced me to cut down the other parts to make it flush.

Truer words have never been spoken.  More often than not, Malifaux plastics are a royal pain in the butt to assemble.  On the plus side they do come out looking great and they're far more sturdy than the old multi-part metals tend to be, but you really do need to put some work in getting them stuck together.

Fantastic models  :-* !  I can see why you chose the Carver to paint first.  That is a cool looking model.  I just started painting Malifaux myself and limited my selection to a starter crew even though I just wanted to pick the coolest model and never got around to learning the rules  :D .  They are fiddly to put together!  I'm afraid to assemble my dead chihuahua  :'( .

There is a Malifaux modellers phrase "By Yan Lo's Beard!".

https://pullmyfinger.wikispaces.com/M2E+Yan+Lo (https://pullmyfinger.wikispaces.com/M2E+Yan+Lo) under trivia.

The instructions are not always good, and sprue layout is confusing (I spent hours trying to get an Ice Dancer's head correct, resorting to stick and fill with greenstuff (using the parts on one side or half of a sprue). When I came to assemble the other one I discovered that  I had used the face from one and the hair from the other, because they sort of worked. The remaining one, not so much...

This site is worth a look:

No idea if they ever get painted.

Those are wonderful.

Hopefully you will paint examples of some of the figures I have to inspire me to finish them ^__^.

Thanks guys! So having played my first game, I decided to make some tokens to help in-game, starting off with scheme, corpse and scrap counters.

Hello again and thank you for the nice comments. So I finally had time to pick up a paintbrush again this week and carve another piece out of the grey plastic mountain.

Some Stitched Together adding to Collodi.

Very nice.  Hadn't even realized there was a third sculpt for the plastic Stitched Together.  Only had two back in the metal days when I was playing Dreamer regularly.
