I have started to update my WW2 Painting Guides.
This is my second survey and, this time, I want to look at paints.
I plan to use Vallejo Model Colour references but also add look up tables for other popular brands.
I need your help to define what is popular.
Artizan Painting Guides are here

Crusader Painting Guides are here

Thanks

I voted Humbrol enamel and other.
The others are
- Acrylic ink by Liquitex
- Enamels by Tamiya (especially metals) and Revell (occasional)
Slightly off topic? For basing I use all manner of paint, especially tubed artists acrylics and various Dulux mixed to order household emulsion paints, the latter (basically heavy body acrylic) bought in 250ml pots (they cost about £4 each).
-
Vallejo Game Color, Vallejo Model Color and Revell Aqua Acrylics.
Not out of a preference for the specific period (I use those three for anything), but because those are the brands I can easily get and have found to give me the best performance and value-for-money.
-
Vallejo model and game, Tamyia, and some old Ral Partha, some Colour Party Paints, liquitex for the bases, and that's all ...
-
I have added Revell Aqua and Tamiya Enamels as additional options so that you can add or change your votes
-
I mainly use Vallejo (VMC and occasionally VGC), supported by GW Citadel paints, a few Army Painter paints, plus rather a lot of 'non-hobby' cheap and cheerful craft acrylics.
-
Vallejo Model.
Good coverage, realistic colours for the period and...I have plenty of them. ::)
...Revell Aqua Acrylics.
Never heard of these. Will have to check them out.

I found it hard to get them in the UK where Vallejo and Humbrol Acrylics were plentiful (Airfix vs Revell paradigm, probably). Not all are great, mind, but the camouflage Matt tones are very good, and their steel/iron/silver metallics are outstanding. Their aluminium is the best acrylic silver/aluminium paint I've ever used, and I use it exclusively for any bright metallics, also in coloured variations. Very strongly recommended. The gold tones are very poor, though, and no match for the VGC brass and bright gold tones.
-
I mainly use Vallejo (I also use the Panzer Aces version for flesh tone), Humbrol for certain things (special colours and varnish) and Citadel for others. The latter two are easily available, Vallejo from Ian Allan or Dark Sphere and at shows.
Hobby Craft stock the Revell paints, though I have never used them.
-
Nowadays, after years of Tamiya/Gunze (for vehicles) I use mostly Mig Ammo paints, plus some AK Interactive (they both provide some very useful modulation sets for most nations - rather irritatingly not British Bronze Green though - there is a Vallejo version). They both have pretty large ranges, everrything from standard acrylics, through metallics & weathering products - I've been using them for a while now & am generally impressed - they haven't sprung any nasty surprises yet.
For figures I generally use Vallejo, (Model Colour/Air & Game colour for anything requiring brighter, more saturated/'fantasy' like colours) but Scale 75 have also been pretty good (good flesh tones).
-
For me is almost always vallejo and citadel but i also use some andrea paints
-
I would have put Tamiya but it looks like you are interested in painting figures rather than vehicles. I don't have good results with Tamiya brushed on.
Also not sure what you are looking to do - if just updating your guides with a paint reference, I can't imagine starting with anything other than VMC. I don't like them much as paints but they have a great palette for WW2.
If you're looking for new paints to try, you might take a look at LifeColour. I've only tried a few of their paints, but I've liked what I've seen so far.
-
I mainly use triad's now from Reaper, Foundry and Coat 'd Arms. Speeds up my painting progress so much and it is also much easier if I need to go back to repaint or rectify some mistakes / damages as I do not need to remember the exact ratios of some particular shades or highlights ;)
-
Vallejo for me, especially their Panzer Aces range. Occasional use of Tamiya rattlecans with vehicles and aircraft, typically as a base coat. Occasional use of Gunge Sangyo as next to Vallejo they are the most ubiquitous acrylics available here. Actually when I first made the change from enamels to acrylics about 30 years ago, Gunge Sangyo was the maker you went to. Better quality than Tamiya.
-
I use mainly Coat d'Arms and Humbrol acrylics. And some old Citadel acrylics.
-
Decoart craft paints.

Paint Colour References in the Painting Guides
My old guides were written between 2006 and 2010.
I used mostly Vallejo Model Colour to have authentic uniform and equipment colours.
I plan to continue with the same paints and I am very happy that the poll supports this idea.
I plan to make an appendix where the main colours are listed with alternatives from other brands.
Ten years ago, Games Workhop still had the original Citadel paints with classics such as Bestial Brown and Bleached Bone.
In my original guides, I referenced Citadel for Browns, Flesh tones and Metals.
I used to use a lot of Citadel but from the new ranges, I only use the metals and the washes. I still think Citadel make the best washes and metals.
I will probably change the black, white, browns and flesh tones to Vallejo Game colour references because they are the colours that I actually use.
New questions for all of you
What do you use for flesh tones?
What do you use for metals?

I still use Citadel metals and I'm on my last pot of Tallarn Flesh, which I still think is great.
-
For flesh tones I usually use Vallejo Panzer Aces, I used to use Citadel Scorched Brown as the base and deep shade but there is no matching colour in their new range.
For shade wash I use the current Citadel flesh wash (I have an original Citadel flesh wash in the multisided bottle with the blue lid, it is used for rust stains).
For steel etc I use the current Citadel leadbelcher, highlights in original Citadel Mithril silver (same age as the flesh wash above).
Gold, brass and bronze are all Vallejo paints. Much better coverage.
For tanks etc I am going over to using various grey tones rather than metallic paints.
-
The majority of paints I use are Citadel. A little Vallejo, Humbrol, Revell and Coat d'Arms whenever I want a particular shade. Generally I try to avoid dropper bottles whenever I can
(I know I'm the odd one out here but I can't stand them..).
Cheers

Mainly Humbrol, Games Workshop and increasingly Vallejo. I use Tamara acrylic, didn't know they even did enamels, also a moderate amount of Colour Party as it is far easier to match their stuff against real colours than trying to guess which of twenty possible Vallejo shades is right.
-
I use MP paints for practically everything
http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/miniature-paints-c-54/
cheap and I just think brilliant
I do use some GW washes and I have some foundry. but not enough to warrant voting for them. just left overs really.
but yeah MP for me all the way

Other Paints:
craft, PollyS, Modelmaster, Reaper, Privateer
-
I have added a few more options based on the coments (Vallejo Panzer Aces, Coat d'Arms, Reaper).
-
I also use Life Color paints, Scale Color, Andrea Paints, and AMMO by Mig. All good stuff!
-
My main paints for years have be Delta Ceramcoat.
It is a craft paint.
Use it about 95% of the time.
I have purchased some Vallejo for some WWII figure painting.
I do like them.
-
It may be of interest to some that Scale Color, thus far limited to fantasy-themed shades, have branched out into WWII, with a range titled Warfront.
Military Modelling has reviewed the set of Field Grey tones in its latest issue, but from the company's website it can be seen that the range is already quite substantial, covering vehicles as well as uniforms, though thus far only for Germany, the Soviet Union and USA:

For metals I use Scale Color and they are awesome. They are the best metallics I've used ever.
(Just re: scale color. I bought their brown set and black and white set. They are only just ok.)
-
I am quite surprsed that the leading items were clear from the end of the first day, and have not really changed since then.
First place is Vallejo Model Colour, used by 80% of voters (currently 65 votes from 81 voters).
Second place is Vallejo Game Colour, used by 42% of voters.
Third place is Games Workshop Citadel, used by 37% of voters.
Fourth is Army Painter, used by 22% of voters.
The poll has no end date so we can see if it changes with more time.

I would be interested in what are the numbers for people who use craft paints.
Do you have any solid numbers on them?
Thanks.

@marine0846
Craft Paints - This would be buried within the 27% of voters who use "other brands".
