Yes, another The Walking Dead thread! After seeing horridperson's thread I decided to order the game and was sold instantly. Great little game, with excellent PVC miniatures, nice rules and good materials. Big fan. So time to slap some paint on them! Started off with the main protagonists: Rick and Carl. The sculpts are perfect: not too much detail, great curves and edges and painting went fast. Think I completed these in about 4 hours. Nex up will be Sandra and some walkers.

Fantastic job! Another Walking Dead thread is always welcomed.
Carl looks like a little bad ass.
I'll gladly follow along Mal!
-
Great brushwork, CONGRATULATIONS! :-*
I am also a strong advocate of clear bases! ;)
And yes, that's a great little game! Looking forward to see how this thread develops! :D
-
They look very good.
How easy were they to get off their original bases?
-
Cheers lads!
Super easy to remove them from the bases. I used a new blade and just the feet from the base. Easy job.
-
The leather effect on Rick's jacket is perfect. Did you give it a dark brown wash over a mid brown colour and then highlight with little flicks?
-
Those look fantastic! Rick and his little brat look ace. You did an excellent job on Carl's face. Somehow you managed a middle schooler tough guy look that really works. Now paint some more :) ; I need vicarious mojo because my Shane model is being a douche and doesn't want to stand up straight no matter how many times I have given him hot water baths lol .
-
@Cubs: Yeah, that about covers it. But to tone it down and blend it a bit more I finish with some washes:
1. Basecoat with Vallejo Beasty Brown
2. Wash several times with Army Painter Strong Tone, Dark Tone and P3 Brown Ink (the ink is my important tone for the coat). Aim for a dark brown coat.
3. Apply highlights with Beasty Brown.
4. Add the wear&tear with Foundry Canvas B and some with Foundry Boneyard B. This will give a badly highlighted coat.
5.tone it down and blend it adding several washes of Soft Tone, Strong Tone and P3 Brown Ink.
With the Brown Ink, thin it down well. The colour of P3 Brown Ink is perfect, it is a bit reddish.
But going by your painting style and quality this should be peanuts for you :)
@horridperson: thanks! I'm happy with Carl's face. Although tge cast is a bit plain, he was easy to paint.
-

I am glad it is not just me.
-
Nicely done mate! I'm loving the texture on the jacket! :-*
-
And here's Sandra and two walkers finished!
Sandra
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/sandra.jpg)
Very nice sculpt. The pose is good, hardly any detail...it's spot on I'd say. Painting her went really fast. Chose to do lots of drybrushes with washes and spot highlighting to get a rough and worn look on her. Decided to make her hispanic as Mantic's white skin doesn't fit the sculpt very well IMO. Think this works better.
Walkers
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/walkers1.jpg)
Also fast paintjobs and also a lot of fun. Experimented with the zombie skin and I'm happy with how it looks. Not too dirty, dark or weird, but dead enough for me and I can finish it quickly.
So one evening of painting...three miniatures done. What a great line of miniatures! They are a lot of fun to do, have loads of character and paint up very fast. Recommended!
-
Nice! The jeans are particularly effective! :-*
-
Looking good! I agree with Andym on the denim and I'm digging the skin on those walkers too :o.
-
Very nice. The just dead look works well.
-
They are simply amazing!
-
Very nice they look great!
-
Those are some nice textures you've done.
-
Thanks lads!
And finally some new stuff done:
Morgan & Duane
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/morgan_duane.jpg)
Nice sculpts with lots of character, although their hair lacks definition. I painted them in the colours from the series and upped the contrast a bit on Morgan's shirt. In general nice to paint and they went bloody fast. Glueing Duane's foot to the clear base was...interesting...but went well! It stuck fast and the bond is good. Pfew!
Derek
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/derek.jpg)
Great sculpt with lots of character. Had fun with the scuffed leather coat. Really prefer this method to clean and smooth leather...much more fun to paint :D.
Walkers
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/walkers2.jpg)
Painting walkers is addictive! They're fast to paint and you can't really do them wrong. Just a matter of basecoating, some blending, some drybrushing, some washing, adding weird colours. Made a mistake? Add some washes and blood and filth. And after a while you have a painted walker! Easy, fast and fun, what's not to like. The first one has a Confederate cap (fits the sculpt IMO), the second a silly old man's sweater, the third's Morgan's deceased wife (really nice sculpt!) and the last is wearing some sports outfit.
12 miniatures done, so time for some scenery. I am now working on a house, filled with a lot of furniture for a scenario. Hope to finish it soon!
-
Lovely stuff.
I love your Morgan and Duane. Their story in the comic was hardbreaking.
I love that you painted a dark skinned zombie.
I didn't even think about not painting them all caucasian and the dead flesh looks really good.
-
Great job.
The dark skinned zombie is Morgan's wife.
-
These are brilliant! Any chance of a skin recipe for the walkers? :)
-
Great looking figures! I especially like Morgan and Duane. The Morgan figure is probably one of my favorites and you did a fine job on a fine figure.
-
Thanks guys! I agree with the assessment on Morgan, excellent sculpt and his pose works well although it's very static.
These are brilliant! Any chance of a skin recipe for the walkers? :)
Easy!
1. Basecoat with Citadel Rakarth Flesh
2. Wash with Army Painter Flesh Wash
3. Wash lightly with Citadel Magenta Ink
4. Wash with Army Painter Strong Tone
5. Highlight with Citadel Rakarth Flesh
6. Highlight with Citadel Rakarth Flesh + Vallejo Model Colour Ivory.
Seems like a lot of steps, but since 3 steps consist of applying washes it's fast and simple. A matter of basecoating, washing and then getting the highlights in.
For Morgan's wife I did the following:
1. Basecoat with Vallejo Model Colour Chocolate Brown
2. Wash with Army Painter Dark Tone
3. Wetbrush with Vallejo Model Colour Chocolate Brown + Citadel Rakarth Flesh
4. Apply some very light highlights with Citadel Rakarth Flesh
-
Lovin' this thread.

Hey guys,
Haven’t posted in while now, but I have played several games now. I made two scenarios for solo/coop play and played them with my mates. Both were fun and worked well.
Farm Raid
PDF: http://paintoholic.nl/twd/farmraid.pdf
Rick, Morgan and the kids travelled to the farm in the hope of securing the food and supplies. Hopefully they would find some much needed food. They approach the farm carefully and decide to move around the left together. Carl spots a walker and shoots it down with his gun. This draws a walker closer. Rick moves around the corner of the farm to take the shot walker down for good…but is assaulted by a walker. His blade flashes and he plunges the hunting knife into a skull.
While Carl moves by the fence towards one of the penned lots, the others move around the farm to take on the walkers.
Carl shoots another walker and Morgan and Duane make a run for the pig. While Morgan fights the walker, Duane starts to pummel the pig. Carl finds a hockey stick, while Rick gets some food supplies.
Duane kills the pig and shoves it in his backpack. Father and son then quickly move towards the ther penned lot. Meanwhile, Rick and Carl are having trouble with all of the walkers converging on them. Carl quickly jumps over the wall and starts to beat on the pig with the hockey stick. Morgan jumps past the car to help Rick fight off four walkers. Duane gets in the car and tries to rig it.
Carl is having trouble killing the pig and Duane is getting nervous with the walkers around so he comes to help Carl. Together they take on the pig, while Rick and Morgan get more and more…red.
Finally, the pig succumbs and Duane hauls it to the car. He tosses it in the trunk and gets back to rigging the car. Carl on the other hand, has trouble scaling the slick muddy wall. Rick and Morgan keep pushing the walkers away, but can’t manage to take them down for good. And then Morgan gets bitten…! He takes damage and infection sets in.
Morgan feels terrible and has a hard time standing on his feet. While he, Rick and Duane jump in the car…Carl desperately tries to climb the wall. If he doesn’t manage to climb it, the walkers will swarm the car and feast on them. Finally finding a good spot, Carl manages to scramble over the wall and run for the car. Jumping in, Morgan slams the door shut and Rick speeds away. They’ve found all of the food…but at what cost? Morgan eyes his left arm and hands his hatchet to Duane. “Do it son..take it off…”
Cool game. It went really well and we weren’t really having problems..but once Morgan got bitten we had to hurry! As a Runner Duane jumped over the penned lots with ease..but Carl really struggled! If he hadn’t succeeded in the last turn, it would have been bloody. But we were lucky and escaped. Cool ending.
Camp in the Woods
PDF: http://paintoholic.nl/twd/campinthewoods.pdf
“While Morgan recovers from the amputation, Rick and Carl go out scavenging again. They are joined by Sandra and Derek. Moving through a forest, they suddenly find a small camp. It doesn’t look abandoned. Time to check it out!
Rick moves past the forest on the left side and fires at a walker. He shoots it down, but the gunfire attracts a walker who shambles towards him and Carl. Carl readies his hatchet.
Derek fires his gun and also headshots a walker…but empties his gun. Darn! Sandra makes a run around the flank.
While Rick readies himself to take on another walker he checks out the tent. He finds some more ammo, useful! He then kicks the walker aside, but can’t manage to take it down for good. Carl rushes for the downed walker to cleave its head in two. Splut! Derek and Sandra sneak into the campsite. Sandra checks out the tent and finds a big kitchen knife. Derek could use this.
Derek and Sandra join together to take on the fat walker, but suddenly Sandra gets rushed from behind and they have to split up to take on the two walkers. Carl charges the next walker…chopping time! Rick sneaks for the next tent and readies his gun.
Carl, Derek and Sandra all push the walkers away, but can’t manage to put them down. Rick decides to help them. He sneaks around a tent and blasts the walker. It falls over, but once again no headshot! The other walkers move towards Rick, giving Derek and Carl space to move again. Sandra gets assaulted by a walker again. Derek checks a tent and finds a scared Liam! (Unfortunately I forgot to bring along Liam’s model, so we were stuck with a Cultist!). The treat is going up fast now and the walkers become more and more aggressive.
Liam’s first action is to scream…doh. The fat walker turns around and moves for Liam..lunch! But Liam pushes him away. Carl also pushes a walker away, while Sandra headshots one.
Rick searches the tent next to him…and finds more ammo. As the threat increases, Carl and Sandra decide to run away towards their base camp. Staying alive with the found supplies seems like a good idea now. One walker goes for Sandra, while Carl manages to sneak through the woods. He gets chased by a walker, but manages to evade it. Both panic when they nearly escape…but this actually moves them away. Success!
Derek makes a run for the last tent, and a walker moves for him. He just reaches him, preventing him from searching the last tent. Liam screams again! Good ol’ fattie stumbles into him again…lunch!
The other walker near Liam also turns around and joins fatty to assault Liam. The poor scared survivor is no match for two walkers and gets eaten alive. RIP.
The threat almost explodes and Rick and Derek can hear the moaning of dozens of walkers nearby. Time to leave! They both run back to leave the forest, but they are surrounded. As they run towards the forest trail, they are assaulted and then suddenly walkers appear from everywhere…game over.
Sandra and Carl catch their breath several miles away and wait for Rick and Derek…but in the distance they only hear the sounds of dozens of frenzied walkers, gunshots, shouts….and then silence. Have they made it? Are they gone? The two decide to go back to base camp and wait there. Best pray for Derek and Rick’s return…”
Interesting game! It went quite well and we were even so fortunate to find a survivor…but Liam manages to scream twice and then got eaten. Doh! The game ended with the threat at 18. This ends the game, but the rules don’t state what happens after. We talked about it and thought it would be cool in a campaign game that the survivors on the board will suffer a white die in damage as they try to escape the horde of walkers. Scary as they can get killed or bitten this way…it will ensure you will treat threat more seriously and not use it to end a game in your favour.
-
Nice scenarios (saved to try out later) and AARs. And I liked the twist of Liam actually being a screaming cultist lol
-
Very nice! Thanks for sharing! ;)
-
Cheers! Note we did use the rule from 'Prelude to woodbury' that the threat goes up by +1 at the end of each turn. That really helps to crank up the pace and keep us on edge.
-
Very interesting.
Were you using the normal or the Prelude event cards?
-
The normal deck. Easy to use for solo games. If you need to move "X eligible walkers", pick the nearest ones to engage you. Just use it to your utmost disadvantage and it works well :D

Update - Reggie & Furnished house
Finished another one...Reggie. It's the guy who shot Rick in issue 1, so basically a foul escaped inmate. I turned him into an angry old man (Get of me lawn!), as I thought it fit the sculpt better. Went with a blue shirt on dark blue pants. For the pants I went with the painting technique where you paint very small lined instead of usual highlights to make it rough and worn. It works, but it could be better. But still, lovely sculpt that was painted fast!
Furnished House
Back in winter I bought the game and also a great pre-painted MDF house from Pat's Laser Cuttings. Now one of the things I dislike is to have buildings without any furniture. It just looks weird and never works for me. So most of the time I go for buildings without any interiors...as it takes a LOT of time to do right. But with this one I wanted to go all in. I bought a lot of 1/48 furniture by Petite Properties Ltd. (which cost me more than the house lol) and started painting it. This cost a loooooot of time. It's just a lot of stuff! I also added wall paper (printed textures), a 7TV television, printed TWD comics, all kinds of pots and jars from Pacarat, printed boxes (with black 16mm dice inside!), a lamp, taps, toilet paper, towels and bed sheeting from my kid's socks, mirror and paintings...and I could have kept adding more and more! But it had to stay playable, so I left it as it is now. It cost way too much time for such a piece, but it was nice to do.
Now to play a scenario...

Although my mind said "never again!" after finishing...I'm already contemplating adding a drug store and a gun shop...with furnishing lol
-
A master piece !
-
Lovely (doll) house :D
But a whole table of those though...
-
Malebolgia, that work with the house is up to what you've done with those minis: AWESOME! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Looking forward to see an AAR soon! ;)
-
That is very nice indeed.
I find myself wondering sometimes at what point do I cross the line where I am no longer building wargames scenery but doll houses. The line do seem to blur.
-
Nice lead mountain storage in the attic! Very nice work. Derek's face is great as is Morgan's wife.
-
About time I finished some more TWD! And once again a blast to paint.
Patrick
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/patrick.jpg)
Nice miniature...great pose, hardly any annoying detail and fun to paint. It's a shame he has a floppy baseball bat sized for kids...I did heat it with boiling water and reposed it, but after time it bent back. So floppy bat it is...
Shane
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/shane.jpg)
Awesome sculpt and I tried to keep his leather jacket as close to Rick's as I could. The tone is a bit different, but that's okay. Had some doubts how to paint his shirt and in the end went with an orangy red. I doubted adding letters to his cap...but the comic told me it had to be done.
So two more done! Next up will be some not-TWD characters to use in campaigns as custom characters. I am also working on a campaign system, but that proves to be a big challenge to get right.
-
Very nice job on these. I'm interested in your campaign systems (solo or multi ?)
-
Thanks! The rules will be a solo-campaign and I am writing it like a TV series; so a campaign which is built with seasons which are built from 10 scenarios. For the scenarios you roll dice to see which one you will play (or choose, whatever you like :)), it will have a mid-season finale and of course a finale.
Each season will have a certain story (a herd approaching camp, a group of opponents, etc.) and you roll each season to see what story will occur this season. You will play until you have the perfect ending for your group or if everybody dies.
-
Nice paint jobs.
A campaign system is the one thing currently missing from the rules (I assume a vehicle expansion is in the future).
-
all kinds of pots and jars from Pacarat,
Amazing work on the interiors! I too am building a post apocalypse setting and am hoarding bits and pieces :D
I tried to search for Pacarat online but found nothing linking to modelling, do you have the web address as I'd be interested in their 'Pots and Jars' ?
Cheers!

Hey,
Pacarat is a LAF member :)

I PM'ed him and bought a set of potions. They were packed well, sent fast, arrived in perfect condition and look fantastic. So really recommended 8)

Sounds interesting. Have you planned to manage resources (food, weapon, ammos) for the survivor ?
-
Absolutely, I think basic living requirements (food, water, roof, etc.) are the key elements for a good campaign. I don't see survivors digging around in scenarios and looking for weapons all the time. So I think I will make some cards in Photoshop for all types of stuff you can find and then make a deck of loot from these. The deck will vary from game to game to simulate the location you scavenge. So a supermarket may be 10 food+3 weapon+2 gear cards and a hunting store might have 8 weapons+5 gear+2 food cards. Easy system to vary the type of loot and doesn't require tons of cards.
-
Sounds good.
-
It has been while since I read the relevant rules but my interpretation/memory is that the supply counters are more than just the supply card you turn over. The card is just the tactically significant result (a piece of equipment, lurker etc). The Supply Counter can contain food, fuel etc which may affect victory conditions. The characters would grab what they can and would look at the stuff in detail in a safer environment.
You could just have tables for the campaign supplies at the end of individual games (similar to Frostgrave etc.).
-
Lovely painting.
It's a shame he has a floppy baseball bat sized for kids...I did heat it with boiling water and reposed it, but after time it bent back. So floppy bat it is...
It annoyed me too, so I drilled a piece of wire in the top and used some Greenstuff to extend it:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=11169.msg1270688#msg1270688
And I love the sound of the campaign/story system you're developing. My simple idea has been that loot you collect and get off table counts as half for cash purposes (i.e to buy new weapons etc.) - also lurkers are worth nothing(!). The other half would be to "buy" food, but I guess I'd need to find an amount each character needed per game - so that if you didn't "buy" enough food for your gang, in your next game your characters would be (randomly or not) be docked health points.
-
Those rock! The house is amazing. I love all of the small details you put it there. Phenomenal. My Patrick wasn't too bad. It was my Shane that was out of control. I think the base itself is slightly warped and shifted his legs so he has a pretty much the opposite of a good shooting stance. I have heated and rebent the model repeatedly but he has a mind of his own.

True, and it might have some merit for the campaign. I'll have to think about it. Thing is, I think for a long campaign you need to have scenarios which focus on getting food. It's scarce and is the most important thing to find. Weapons are less of an issue I guess, but ammo is also an interesting one. So in the rules I want to focus on these a lot and more than on finding guns, guns and guns!
And I'm also tweaking things like the Event Deck and loot deck. For instance, the Car alarm needs to appear only in a few scenarios IMO. Same goes for the Booby Trap. For regular TWD games these are cool, but it's weird to see these a lot in the campaign.
But first I will need more scenery and painted miniatures! A lot more! :D
@horridperson: Yeah, my Shane was also warped (he leaned backwards). That's one of the great things about custom bases: it makes it easier to correct for bendiness :)
-
I definitely see your point. The supply cards are oriented towards the one off game, repeated paying with the same set of cards will lead to everyone ending up with the best found equipment. Booby traps and lurkers I feel are less of an issue (until my party has been blown up for the fourth time running...). I can see the events having a similar repeat issue.
Maybe a "picked clean" deck of supply cards with no tactical value but may yield items of campaign value (miscellaneous cans - might be food, might even not have spoiled).
I must dig out the two Twilight 2000 rule books, they have a similar food requirement, fuel not so much of an issue.
I look forward to seeing more of your painting and how your campaign system develops.
-
One other point might be to consider if you are planning for long campaigns : supplies should be more and more difficult to find. Right after the outbreak it would be probably easy to find food, but later on when most of it have been scavenged or spoiled it should become a more difficult resource to find. Ammo and guns might be the same or locations to find them harder to reach (military camps etc.)
-
Excellent suggestions! I really like those. And it should be easy to implement: starting with series 2, at the start of each series, discard one food and one ammo card from the decks (to a minimum of 1). So slowly you will find less and less and you will need to spend more time at locations scrounging for food and ammo.
-
If you are going for a multi-year campaign, you might want to think about the starting threat level and the effect on herds. FTWD does not have that issue yet as it is either still 2010 or just 2011.
First series as per the rules. Supplies plentiful
Second series, lots more walkers (as more survivors don't) so increase the base threat level. Supplies scarce.
Third series, back to normal level walkers except increase herd size (as they flock this way). Herds also increase threat level. Tinned food reaching sell by date.
Fourth series, more lurkers, more herds. Food extremely scarce.
Ammo is more complicated than food, as generally you can eat all food but guns come in all calibres.
Black powder weapons are an option though you would need to add a smoke effect.

Nice work on them.

Sweet...and horrific :)
-
Thanks! And already three more models, I realised I needed Dale too for my campaign. And quickly added the walkers with him.
Dale
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/dale.jpg)
Dale's bodywarmer reminded me of Marty McFly's (Back to the Future), so I knew I had to paint Dale as an old version of Marty! Lots of fun to do and the jeans are super easy with Contrast paints. I almost kept the sneakers pristine white, but in the end added some brown weathering (it's the zombie apocalypse!)
Walkers

Nice work.
-
Poor Marty. Nice additions.
-
I'm not sure what it is, maybe just the colours you pick, but the clothing in particular just looks so good.
-
Thanks guys!
@Voivod: what really works well IMO is to use a zenithal priming and then hit everything with Contrast paints. This gives you a very nice basecoat and shading. Then use a colour like VMC Deck Tan with some of the Contrast to create nice desaturated highlight colours. The desaturated colours really work with this setting. And higlighting in 'small stripes' gives a nice worn look to the clothing. You can see it on the rasta walker. I really like the effect on his shirt...worn and old.
-
Which of the contrast paints did you use for the jeans? assume a zenithal undercoat and is it with grey seer or wraithbone?
Very nice models, the eyes with visible pupils look a bit odd on the zombies, i prefer to do an offwhite eye with no pupil to represent cataracts etc (and saves doing more eyes), but the pupils make them almost scarier to be honest :)
-
Thanks! For the jeans it was super easy:
-Prime black
-Prime white zenithally
-Coat with Black Templar + Talassar Blue
-Drybrush with P3 Trollblood Base
-Drybrush with P3 Trollblood Base + VMC Deck Tan
Supereasy and fast!
For the eyes I'm still thinking of adding a yellow and red wash to them to make them more sick. Not too sure about how they are now.
-
I was just using white primer with Talassar Blue for a really quick blue jeans but wasn't totally happy with the look. I will have to give your more detailed recipe a try.
-
Haven't worked with zenithal yet, but it makes sense. There's this look about it that makes it look textured and not smooth like a piece of metal would be.
Haven't worked with the contrasts yet.
For the eyes, I prefer to paint the eyes of zombies just a mix of bone and grey, a very light colour and then no details. I give them a dark outline (Usually black) like I do with most eyes on humans, but then after painting the "whites" (bone grey in this case) I stop.
This gives them a dead blank appearance, since the iris and pupil leaves a lot of the colour upon death. You could put in a darker grey iris after this step, but for me that's not a necessity.

I just had a really focused painting week, doing a ton of scenery and also Andrea and Amy. I'm having a lot of fun with this game!

Lovely work, especially the details on the scenery.
-
You have really taken it up a notch with your painting lately. Well done.
-
Very nice indeed
-
Many lovely details.
-
Superb work all around.
-
Your stuff is GORGEOUS, man!!! :o :-*
Those little nice details one can find everywhere... wow!
-
Thanks lads! Now working on a fast food place.
-
WOW! That is so cool.
-
Nice work.
Where did you get the news vendor?

Cheers!

Supercheap and supernice!
-
The scenery is fantastic! The news stand and camper are perfect. Where did you get the planters as well?
-
Thanks!
The resin planters are from Fenris Games: https://fenrisgames.com/shop#!/FGSF12-Round-planters/p/13242739/category=2202360
The big round planters are just plastic bottle caps, filled with paper mache and base materials.
The square flower planters are miscast objective tokens from Secret Weapon Miniatures which I got in a huge bag of cheap miscast stuff.
-
Thats great stuff, the news kiosk is brilliant, loads of great detail. Planters are ace as well
-
Cheers for the praise!
-
Great looking collection, IMO one of the best I have seen so far!
-
Thanks man, that is high praise, coming from you :o 8)

And more done! Four more characters for Days Gone Bye. Only Glenn left to get cracking on the scenarios.
Carol

Donna

Annoyingly, I seemed to have misplaced the actual Donna miniature so I had to find another one. Fortunately I have a huge MERCS Recon collection and this model seemed fitting enough. Donna does seem to have gotten herself a facelift eh. Ah, Allen would be okay with it :P. But carrying a tablet around during the apocalypse? Still stupid Donna!

Very distinctive style for the clothing but an excellent job on the faces. Sophie is perfect!
-
Thanks! Yeah, lately I switched highlighting my TWD to highlighting in small stripes and dots. This makes clothing look very rough and worn and it stands out very well on the table. It's fast too, so that's a nice bonus :)
-
Very nice work.
-
Okay, here's a big one...the 'A-Z Mart' by Antenociti's Workshop. A truly fantastic pre-painted kit and it was great to build and paint. I painted most of the brown MDF edges to hide the MDF look and added a lot of weathering to it. I bought the unweathered version intentionally, so I would weather it the way I wanted to. With graffiti, posters, grime and dirt it looks a lot more realistic. And the counter inside the shop was very empty, so I added detail myself.
Can't wait to play on it!!

Whoahh, this looks GREAT! :o :)

Wonderful set up. What a great table to play on! The ammunition & bakery isle needs to be better defended - can't lose that. lol
-
I concur - wonderful brushwork and terrific terrain.
-
Cheers lads!

Haha! It was either ammunition or sex toys. Since I think of playing with my 7 year old son, I chose ammunition ;)

Nice.

Fantastic stuff, especially all the terrain! You're making me want to dig out all my Walking Dead stuff now ;)

Looks great!

Good call.

And finished four more during an online Pathfinder session. I've started on Woodbury, so I got a good set of antagonists to face off against Rick.
Raymond
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/raymond.jpg)
Cool sculpt, not too good cast. His gun is really weird with the bend, but still I like him.
Gloria
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/gloria.jpg)
Once again not the best cast as her cap is a bit weird.
Hippie walker
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/twd_zombie12.jpg)
Eat brains, not war!
Fat walker
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/twd_zombie11.jpg)
Probably my favorite walker sculpt. So extreme!
-
You have a great weathered look for these figures. Soft lines and everything is just a bit dirty. Really works for a Zombie game.
-
Thanks man, that is what I aim for! Weathered with some colour :)
-
Nice work.
-
Four more done. Two more for Woodbury (getting into a playable faction now) and two more walkers.
Howard Abernathy
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/howard.jpg)
One of my favourite Woodbury models. Nice pose and gear. My son chose his colours and I think he chose well!
Curtis
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/curtis.jpg)
Great outfit and I like his static pose, fits a guard-type.
Walkers
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/twd_zombie13.jpg)
The first walker is one of the chained ones that belongs with Michonne when she is the wandering nomad. But he'll be a regular walker in my games. The second is the walker version of the thug Reggie (the guy who shot Rick at the beginning of the comics). Cool walker and getting his guts covered in gore was fun to do. Here a shot with both Reggies:
Next up two more protagonists from Rick's camp and two more Woodbury survivors.
-
Very nice work.
-
Thanks man!
And four more done this week, so it was a good week! This time I did three legends from the series and Tom from Woodbury.
Michonne
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/twd_michonne.jpg)
At first I wasn't too hot on this model, but during painting I changed my view. Love her now. Great pose, lots of character in her face and a very cool representation of one of the coolest characters from the franchise.
Abraham
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/twd_abraham.jpg)
Another iconic character and a fun one to do too. Cool musculature to paint and a very simple sculpt with loads of character. But he was a b*tch to cut off his base with that walker :D
Glenn
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/twd_glenn.jpg)
And another must have for the collection and games. Such a great character from both the comics and series and the model is very nice. For painting I did a mash of colours from different seasons. So his cap, backpack and shoes from season 1 and the rest of his clothes from season 6. I think it worked out well this way.
Tom
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/twd_tom.jpg)
An angry resident from Woodbury and probably my favorite sculpt from the range. His pose and gear are so good, love him. Had a blast painting him.
Next it's time for some more Woodbury stuff and then on to the Saviors!
-
Very nice painting style. Great addition to your collection.
-

Was sure I'd already commented about this aspect of your painting but perhaps I forget to hit 'post'.
It really does look good but still colourful, it's easy to weather ministures and they end up dull - it's my failing at present and something to work on.

Thanks! Cool you saw that, it's one of the things I try to achieve. I think it really helps I am using Contrast paints as the base layer and shading. These are quite saturated, so the main colours pop well. But for most highlights I use either Vallejo Deck Tan or Scale 75 Nacar, a very desaturated light grey. For me this gives a nice balance between rich colours and desaturated highlights.

It's the Tobacco shop by 4Ground, a small store with a very nice footprint for gaming. Not too big it will fill up a lot of table space, but big enough for models to get inside. I combined it with the interior DIY set they have for their mall. The building was a breeze to assemble, nothing hard. The tool set on the other hand is VERY fiddly and I'm not a fan on how some connectors fit (way too loose). But with some patience and a bit help from my superglue I got there. But unfortunately the set doesn't fit in the shop that well and I had to do some changes to get the best setup. But I think it makes for a great terrain piece for Walking Dead. To finish it off, I coloured pieces of the brown cut MDF, added some decals (Green Stuff World) and leaves and airbrushed some weathering.

A really cool terrain set by Knight Models for their Batman game. It's all cardboard and I could buy it for 8GBP on Facebook, so an excellent haul I'd say! I assembled it, reinforced it with some hot glue and superglue and then edged all sides to get rid of that cardboard look. For the Ferris Wheel I constructed in a way that I didn't have to slot the carriages through the side. This prevents the typical cardboard scenery look and looks much more convincing.
An excellent terrain set and it makes for a table of its own for Walking Dead. I can imagine Lori and Rick taking Carl for a day of fun when he turns 10...but they are not alone...
-
Oh i love that funfair! Very Zombieland.
I must go back to my Walking Dead stuff, I love that game
-
Love it, especially the Tool Shop. More POWER ruff ruff.
-
Nice work.
-
Wow.
-
The Zombie-Land table setup if brilliant. The cardboard really works as the temporary carnival - their buildings were always temporary and rickety looking. Fantastic job painting them.
-
Thanks lads!
@syrinx0: agreed! I think the grungy, rusty and tattered look is perfect for games like Walking Dead or my Cyberpunk tables.
-
Great Table !
Did you actually had a game on it or was it just for pictures purpose ?
-
Cheers!
At first only pictures...but then my kids walked into the room and started playing with the scenery and miniatures. So it was used for their adventures ;)
But hope to play a game soon again!
-
Oh Mal....
I lost track of this thread, but WOW!! Just love everything, the attention to detail, the great paint, the awesome scenery. You've really been knocking this project out of the park!!
I wonder if that news vendor still has Amazing Fantasy #15 for sale? lol
-
Cheers vikey! It really is a fun game and the miniatures are a blast to paint. And with the scenery you can really go to town.
Oh, I saw Negan run off with #15 by the way. Maybe you can still catch him?
-
After several months of painting other stuff, I went back and did three more for this game. This time it's Dwight, John and Tara from the Here's Negan board game. Cool thing is, they also made profiles for Walking Dead: All Out War, so I can use them in both games. Excellent.
And once again fast paintjobs with Contrast paints and some highlights. Next up will be the other two survivors from the game (Negan will be done someday, I already have a painted Negan) and Tyreese.

-
It's a new one! Instant tattoos! Super easy :P
But no, I had to add the tattoos he has in the comics (although later on in the comic they seemed to have disappeared...lol). And thanks!
-
Nice work.
Excellent work on the tattoo.

I know I've commented before but feel I need to say once more that I love how you paint.
-
Cheers mate, that's always great to hear! :)
-
And Saviors DONE! Finished Laura & Sherry and also Tyreese as promised. In addition, I also did some graveyard pieces (based on Bloodborne & Dark Souls 3) which will be excellent for TWD for spooky scenarios. Also did some extra shots, including one of the collection so far. The shelf is getting crowded...

-
Very nice work.
Just realised there are now three Fear characters available
-
A great photograph of the collection. Nicely staged with a wonderful background.
-
Cheers guys! Ultravanillasmurf, which characters? I don't watch Fear, only know Morgan made the move to FTWD.

Cheers guys! Ultravanillasmurf, which characters? I don't watch Fear, only know Morgan made the move to FTWD.
Morgan, Dwight and ( - spoilers - Sherry ).
-
Really? How lame they went to Fear! Dwight is such an important character in the TWD comic. Sometimes these choices are just weird.
-
Great overall picture of the TWD miniatures. :)
-
Time for an update. Really had fun with these! Let's start with an action shot:

Next I will either do more Woodbury or start with the Hunters. Not sure yet.
-
nice
-
Excellent. Really love the t-shirt on Rick.
-
Thanks lads! Wanted to do something with the shirt, such a big canvas. This image seemed ideal. Not too difficult and very recognizable.
-
Michonne is especially awesome.
-
Nice updates in this thread - really inspiring.
-
It was time for more stuff for this project!
I bought these two cheap toys at a local poundland/dollarstore, typical bright coloured Chinese plastic toys. But the scale was great for Walking Dead, so time to give them an apocalyptic treatment.
I first started with the bright orange truck (https://static.pkleeklrsrci.net/tl_assets/400/toitoys_24588c_3093381_oranje_400.jpg?fbclid=IwAR0P5TJo7BxBvX_TJYH_jkALGNIadWt3RuH7A-_VomoY1_yoHUQ-RXnS2OE). I took off the container and disassembled it. This made airbrushing a lot easier. I first went with a dark rusty brown and then used a sponge to add more orange and brown colours on top for variation. After this had dried I added some chipping medium to it with a sponge. Then I added blues to the containers, with an airbrush this is so easy. Start out with a very dark blue and work your way to a very light blue. Only takes 5 minutes or so. This needs to dry very well…and then it’s time for chipping! I took a large stiff brush and some warm water and just rubbed the wet brush over the areas where the chipping medium was. This dissolves it and you take the medium and blue paint right off. Super easy to do and gives an awesome weathered effect as if the paint has come off and you see the rust underneath.
I used some oil paints and pigments to add some more rust and finished it off with some leaf scatter and coloured sawdust (fixing it with Mod Podge, works so well). During assembly I decided to keep one of the doors open and add some boxes and bottles so it would make for a nice objective in the game too.
The container can be placed on the truck or separately on the table. Always nice to have options.
The truck itself was easier to do. I first airbrushed it with matt varnish and then added grime and dirt with oil paints and pigments. I used rusty pigments only on the metal parts and not on the body itself as I assumed these are plastic and wouldn’t rust. And I also added leaves and sawdust for an old, abandoned finish. I made sure the rear part also was covered, so it made sense if it was on the table without the container.
Then the flatbed truck. I really went to town with weathering, adding tons of pigments over the oil paints. But in the end the pigment fixer behaved weird and everything became a bit tacky. So I used Mod podge with pigments on top. And WOW that combination works fantastic! The Mod Podge fixes the pigment very well and you can easily add texture because the stuff is so thick. Of course you don’t get the typical dry and dusty look you can get with pigments, but honestly I think that doesn’t work too well for gaming any way (it comes off too easily and it will often leave pigments and stains everywhere).
So two finished vehicles to add to my tables. A lot of fun experimenting and trying to get a nice TWD look and in the end I’m quite happy with them!
-
Brilliant work as usual! Thanks for sharing how you got such amazing results. There is just so much to love in this thread, particularly the carnival.
-
They do look great.
-
I really really like the truck
-
Cheers lads! Painting these vehicles made me want to paint more Walking Dead...so I decided to paint all six of the Hunters. And once again lots of fun and fast to do. The method of zenithal priming, contrast paints and quick highlights is so efficient that I can do models within 1-2 hours. A lot of fun to do as always and nice the whole group is finished.

-
Looking good! And so fast! Great work.
Is that frosting on the clear bases from using superglue?
-
Cheers. And yes, frosting because of the superglue. I might use some black wash to tone it down later, but I don't care that much. You don't really see it during gaming.
-
No, I do not suppose you see it at arms length on the table.
I had that same problem when I tried clear bases. It was a bit more fussy but I found slower drying hobby glue did not lead to the same frosting.
Clear bases are great for figures that are on various different terrain, indoor and outdoor.
-
Could you try putting a little bit of darkish grey/black around the feet - sort of like a noonday shadow that a person would cast. Might not work but you could maybe give it a shot with one test figure.
-
Beautify photography. Great work on these models!
-
Cheers lads!
Four more done...this time the prisoners from 'Safety behind bars'. I did add some black wash around the feet after superglueing them to the clear bases and this worked really well to soften the frosting.

Looking good!
-
Nice painting.
I could not see the frosting.
-
Very nice. Great to see more finished figures added to your collection.

Cheers guys! Next up some scenery. I received 'Miles Behind Us' a couple of weeks ago and saw I needed a barn. I checked out MDF barns, but I didn't really like them. But then a week ago I saw a cardboard barn by Umbum. Now I know Umbum because I also have a castle from them and I really like the stuff. It's sturdy, textured card, has excellent graphics and can be assembled without glue. So I bought it online and when it arrived I assembled it in no-time. And it has some moving parts too! You can open the doors and the roof can be opened so you can also play inside. Good stuff.
I did remove the tabs from the outside of the barn to remove some of the cardboard look and covered the slots with leftover cardboard or moss and leaves, added hot glue to the inside to strengthen the structure and colour the edges of the cardboard with felt markers. And now I have a barn that is perfect in terms of size and I really like the look of it. Can't wait to use it in the game :)

Good job on that.
You've convinced me to look at what else they do.

Looks better than my old Menudo lunchbox!

Nicely looks the part, great stuff!

Never really been a fan of card buildings before but that looks fantastic, opened my eyes a little.
I'll definitely be checking out some of their stuff now.

Cheers! And they make some awesome cardboard terrain. For example, their medieval castle and village look very nice and you can assemble them well without seeing the typical cardboard tabs with some effort.

I like Umbum, though it is Russian in origin. I got the old gate house about a year ago. Some pieces can be found on Etsy.
