This lot has already appeared in Warseer and some other places, but it's always nice to hear more comments. So, here's my work-in-progress, a White Lion -themed army for WHFB/9th Age.
I'm very bad at painting same models over and over again, so I wanted to make this lot different. Although a White Lion -themed HE army is far from being an unique idea, almost every piece in this army is an unique conversion/kitbash. I'm not too professional with them, but rather just learning along the way.
The overall color theme is the sandy coastline of Ulthuan. Colors used are sandy and pale: gold, metal, leather, sand, beige, white, off-whites, some blues.
To start with, here are some Lion Riders of Chrace, heavy cavalry.

Challenging as they were, I was really happy how they turned out in the end. Like you may notice, they are all magnetized to their saddles.
Some other units are already done as well. I will post more pictures later. Thoughts and comments welcome!

As a former HE player, I salute your fine work here!!

Salute back! And some individual shots of the riders. The first one is my own favorite.

Some actual White Lions join the party...

Rather crowded unit thanks to the dynamic poses and some conversions.

I think you're doing very well to get so many units out of the basic plastic Lions kits and the Lion chariot riders. Well done! :)

Thank you! Although there are plenty of other bits and kits thrown into the mix than those two. It becomes more apparent in the next unit... the Lion Rangers!

I tried to give each of them somewhat unique poses and activities. Some are shooting or loading, but others are occupied with various tasks, be it tracking, hunting or lopping an odd orc's head off. Downside is that the unit became really crowded and difficult to fit together.
And finally, all three ready units:

Great looking units.

Whilst I'm not a big fan of the later warhammer ,elves are my favourite and I really like what you have done with yours. The rangers are my favorite.

1. I dearly miss Warhammer Fantasy, this is a breath of fresh air.
2. This is an inspired army, great work!

Thank you very much!
Here's the supposed general of the army, the Lion Princess of Chrace. Female noble on the Lion Chariot. I went a little magnet-happy when building this one, so it includes the total of 32 magnets (!??). Would you believe it?

Besides the magnets and the custom noble, it's fairly standard Lion Chariot. I greenstuffed the bottom of the chariot and added in some cloak pieces to give it the resemblance of lion pelt spread over it. The noble has her own infantry base she can jump onto as well.

The floor of the chariot was greenstuffed into resembling lion pelts. Not the most successful piece, but does its job, I guess.
Some new stuff for this army on the painting table. New pictures soon.
-
Really like these - been a fan of Chrace since the White Lions and Korhil were featured in the first White Dwarf I bought.
-
That's a very cool army lots of lovely conversions. I'm going to offer one minor criticism/comment (sorry) the actual lions (the big cats) would pop a bit more if their manes were a different colour nothing to funky but just a different shade of their current colour a bit like this one

-
While I agree, they wouldn't be White Lions of Chrace then:

Very nice conversions and painting.

This was my reasoning for the choice as well. White lions seem to work much better in gray color scale; then the mane can be darker and the lions still have a little unnatural feel in them. In my sandy palette, that really didn't work. I tried one with a darker mane, but it ended up looking like an ordinary lion. I felt better leave them like this.
Very nice conversions and painting.
And thanks!
-
That's fair enough like I said its a very nice army the lions just felt a little monotone to my eyes but I understand why you've done it that way now.
-
Wow-this is an amazing army-so much movement and energy in the poses you've created. Great work! :D
-
Very cool. I wonder if a different colour wash for the mane might make it stand out while still being white? Very cool either way though. (Much better than what I can do and white is such a fiddly colour)
-
Thanks alot, guys! Here you can see that I've started my spearman unit with a single spear and a liontamer filler.

I long thought how to give a dynamic spark into a by-default dull line of spearmen. I believe at least the three spears in front of the lion will be kneeling. Idea is to create a little bit spartan shield wall kind of feeling to the front line, and have the second line supporting them, possibly with spears in two-handed grip.
-
Wowzers! :-* :-* :-*
-
I managed some more White Lion Spearmen of Chrace. Now the front rank is intact.
There's a mini-shieldwall by three frontline guys, crouching under the jumping lion. Plus a command group of two, musician and champion/banner.
It's a shame that from the frontal view, the lion cloaks don't show that much.
-
After a few months break, I finally completed the 20-man spear unit, and made a fancy BSB along with it. All characters in the unit are naturally conversions.
The BSB is ridiculously He-man-ish and buffed for an elf, but what the heck. :D

As a detail, there's also a spearman in the unit, jumping from a rock and chucking a spear.

Looking good. Heroic, and not at all like a chorus line.
-
I love this army, but like others, I can't help feeling that the lions themselves need something extra. The pelts are fine (although rather than painting the manes a dark colour, perhaps they'd look good if they were actually white), but it's the details (or rather, the lack of detail) that prevent them from "popping" - by which I mean teeth, tongues, ears, claws, noses, and so on. A little more detail in those areas (black noses, whitish teeth, pinkish tongues, and so on) would make them look more finished. Love all the conversions, though - a beautiful army, all told!
-
Like the dynamic looking units very much ...
-
Thank you. I will probably take aside some individual lions for detail work at some point. Spear unit will get some missing shields as well, and so on. But so far I've been more interested to keep the army growing.
Next I might do a lion bolt thrower, White Lion mage or gryphon. What do you guys think - do you have ideas of White Lion -themed units you would see fitting in this army?

Building up a White Lion Mage.

Great work. I like the lions - sort of something very other worldly or almost mechanical about them. Sort of like they are not actual flesh and blood but summoned by some mysterious elven magic.
-
Thanks! I've heard before that they're a bit "gargoylish", although I'm not entirely sure how much of that comes from the models and how much of my painting.
Here are all three new heroes together.

Very nice. Makes me wish I'd bought more of the plastic White Lions while they were available.
-
Lovely paintwork all round! Keep up the great work!
-
Thanks, guys! Wouldn't have minded grabbing another box myself, but luckily enough my wide bits array will likely get me to complete this project. At the moment I'm painting the bolt thrower. Also planning to revamp the actual White Lions into a larger unit over a new tray - they just can't compete with the other units at the moment.
And of course I have a display board for the army in the works. :D

Lovely work. Truly an army to be proud of.

A truly wonderful project.
Loving all the conversion work creating a totally unique army.
:-* :-*
As someone who is also putting together an Elf-themed army, I only wish that I had found this thread earlier.
:)
-
Thanks, Koyote and Mason. The display board should be up within a month or so.
-
Karmic interference put the display board project to ice: chinese company failed to deliver my magnetic sheets and my base board warped. Another try at some point once I find more patience. >:(
-
I digged up this project from storage and revised the original White Lions of Chrace unit a bit. It was originally only 10-manned, so I boosted it up to 20-24-man unit (including or excluding the filler). Some of the pieces were old ones and I painted a score of new ones from scrap materials (half of the bodies are greenstuff, missing cloaks are from the Empire instead, etc.)

Still pondering whether I put a lion statue or a living white lion on the pillar. Or I suppose an elf with a heroic pose could do as well.

Very nice 8)
Can I ask why the movement tray has such a large rim?
-
Can I ask why the movement tray has such a large rim?
It was just how they turned out. I wanted to be able to place some additional bits to it for looks. It's probably detrimental to the playability. In the pictures, it looks a bit bigger than it actually is, though! It's about 0,7-1,2 centimeters width.

Encounter at the Lion Gate
The long-ago planned display board is completed. Well... almost. I'm still thinking that I might keep drybrushing it towards white.
There's two boards and the wall itself. It has some magnetized features to ease transportation. I tried to pepper each terrain piece with a number of bits for additional interest.
