Title: "Papers Please" or how I learnt to stop worrying and embrace a short deadline
Post by: 6milPhil on March 20, 2017, 03:20:58 PM
So Salute 2017 is approaching, I've got a game booked with my local club the Gamers in Thanet Society and thought I might as well start early in putting the boards together.

Masking tape x3, and a sanding block - the sanding block cost a quid, the brush 30p.  :o

"Papers please"... related to a computer game of the same name by any chance?  :)

No I'm afraid not, but you're not the first person to suggest that, which means there's a growing group of us with impeccable taste in computer games.  ;)

It's inspired by this scene from "The Great Escape"...

Rather excitingly I painted the MDF tiles "dirty protest" brown, and then had to squeeze together a temporary table to get an idea of layout. Luckily I already have some buildings painted for this project...

Collected all the pieces I have ready-ish for this and took a blurry photo of them...

Started laying out the road and pavement to see how they work, I had the MDF cut to match the size of a road section to make life easier...

Knocked up some matching bases...

Gluing the pieces into place, I don't have much room so the most I can manage is to lay out four tiles at a time...

Roads and paving in place and first lick of paint...

Thanks.  8)

Nine days to go and I'm waiting for the weather to be sunny so I can apply a wash over all the boards...

The cobblestone roads will be a KS, I'm not happy with the pavements yet, so not sure what will happen with those...

Usually when you submit a KS you have to wait three days while they check it, imagine my surprise when the computer just went... "Yeah, okay"

Road section Ks is go... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/718310363/streetscape-28mm-cobblestone-road-sections

I have just been admiring your table on a few of the Salute videos around.
Looks like one of the highlights of the show to me.
 :-* :-*

One question: There is a red East Kent bus on the table seen at about the 2:10 mark here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcWyqpXLYJE&t=2s
Where is that from?
Any details of manufacturer, code etc would be really appreciated as I could really use one of those.

Most generous.

Ahhh the bus, well we do have a very nice French diecast bus which after several hours we couldn't find so we substituted that. It's an AEC Regal Coach from the Corgi Collectable range, not wholly fitting into the timescale.

You can get that model model but not in EK livery from Hattons... http://www.hattons.co.uk/stocklist/1000395/1000600/1000766/0/Corgi_Collectables_1_50_Scale_Buses/prodlist.aspx

Or that very one, of a pair, via ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=diecast+buses+east+kent&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XAEC+Regal+Coach+diescast+corgi+collectable+east+kent.TRS0&_nkw=AEC+Regal+Coach+diescast+corgi+collectable+east+kent&_sacat=0

Cheers, Phil.

The East Kent thing is not important as I am going to slap paint on it (imagine the horror if they knew...   :o lol).
I shall be finding the cheapest 'period' option and butchering it for the bus to Foulmouth*, so cheap is more imporatnt.

Many thanks!

*Foulmouth: My British Isles equivalent to Innsmouth.

You're welcome!

There's a certain perverse joy to unboxing a collectable diecast and hacking it, and it makes all the others more valuable so it's not all bad news for collectors.  ;)
