Title: Baltic pagans - Now with Battlereport
Post by: Dr. Zombie on March 20, 2017, 06:36:01 PM
In 2019 it is the 800 anniversary af the  battle of Lyndanisse (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Lyndanisse) where the Danish flag fell from heaven and granted the Danish crusaders victory over the Estonian pagans. I am putting together a pagan army and possibly also building some terrain. To mark the occasion. But be warned this is a slow cooking project. I have already showed the start of the army in my workbench thread. But thought they deserved a thread of their own.

So without further ado here is my first four units.

Ohh nice..
Will follow this with interest.

I have thought about using Frostgrave Barbarians in plastic kitbashed together with maybe Fireforge miniautures or maybe Gripping Beast Viking Hirdmen or maybe even Warlord Games Celts to get some Baltic heathens.

A great start!

I fully intend to do some units with a more "wild" look. The GB plastics are definitely going to make an appearance along with conquest Normans.

I am loving the grunge look on these feudals... :-*
As for tribesmen, I've always bemoaned the lack of decent pagan Pruzz etc. in 25/28mm. Some years ago I had two 15mm Baltic crusades armies sculpted by Josef Ochmann from the Hobby Products Historical Heroes ranges with some spirited Lithuanian cavalry and Pruzz tribesmen.

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~tpope/sol/metal-magic/images/P2027.jpg
I always thought they would make good Dunlendings or even Hunnic looking Easterlings... sadly I have not yet found their equivalent in the larger scale. All I can suggest is shaggifying converted Celtic, Dark Age or Frostgrave Barbarian troops with green stuff capes, cloaks, hoods etc.
I've had a stab at this creating Wildlings for my ASOIAF project, but I would also highly recommend the Black Tree Design Kurdish tribesmen from their ancients range. I added GB Medieval Russian weapons and arrived at this...

Provided with suitable pagan almond shaped plank shields they could proxy well as Pruzz. Although they come in only 4 poses, they take to conversion well.

Very nice start indeed ! I am working on the plastic Barbarians from frostgrave, too at the moment, alas as proxies for Wildlings in my GoT setting.

Those look nice as well. Perhaps a little more savage and wild than I have imagined. I think I am going to go for a slightly more civilized look. Perhaps a bit like late Viking, saxons or Normans. But not as feudal. If that makes any sense?

But if I am honest I have next to no idea of how the Estonians would have looked in 1219. That is why I have immagined them hundred years behind on their armour fashion.

Estonian history is regularly reflected in written sources from the early 13th century. Besides pre-conquest semi-feudal relations and pagan beliefs, the most significant features that shaped the European Middle Ages — the Catholic church and fixed feudal relations — were brought to Estonia by foreign colonists. From here:

http://www.estonica.org/en/History/ca_1200-1558_Estonian_middle_ages/Sources/

That seems to me that tribal organization was somewhat like pre feudalism in the rest of Europe if that is of any help?!

Interesting and out of the ordinary project.  Everyone thinks Teutonic Knights for the period, but there was a lot else going on in the Baltic region.

You can check out my Samogitian/Curonian army here http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=86746.msg1068602#msg1068602 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=86746.msg1068602#msg1068602) The figures are a mix of plastic and metal. Warlord Celts and GB vikings are the bulk of the plastics, as well as some wargames factory Germans. The metals are all GB Jomsvikings and Pagan/Early Rus. I also made noble and light cav with wargames factory horses and bodies with GB Viking and Warlord Celt heads. I think Estonians used less cavalry but I believe the Teutonic Knights/Sword Brothers had mounted Livonian auxiliaries so noble cavalry could be an option for Estonian tribes.

My i ask what glue you used to glue the palisade ?
Wooden glue or other type?
Title: Re: Baltic pagans
Post by: Dr. Zombie on May 28, 2017, 03:29:45 PM
I ended up just using wood glue. I had planned on using hot glue but it ended up to difficult/fiddely  to place the palisades whilst the glue was still hot.

So in the end I made a small groove with my styrofoam cutter filled it with wood glue and placed the timbers in there.

My only doubt is if stays strong enough with the wood glue.

Super cool result my good doctor. Can we please give it a spin for our next game? I am sure CwC can wait. If we combine our medieval models it should be enough for a Lions Rampant game while we build our forces.

Cheers
Erik

Excellent looking motte and bailey castle. The rock outcrops are a nice touch.

Very impressed you have so much storage space lol

Thanks lads.

I don't really have storage place for something of this size. But when starting this build I figured it would be future me's problem. I have sorted a temporary storage. And I have a cunning plan for a more permanent solution. But it requires some building and perhaps worst of all some cleaning up in the zombie workshop.

Post by: Dr. Zombie on June 14, 2017, 06:04:55 PM
After having the Motte and Bailey castle finished Erik and I had to take it for a test drive. So we quickly cobbled a game together Erik took control of his Danish crusaders and I my Baltic bagans. We played Lions Rampant with 24 point for the danish defenders and 36 points for the Baltic attackers.

Overview of the table. Castle by me the rest of the boards are by Erik.

The pagans advance. Their archers take up position behind a low wall and start taking shots at any defender who pokes his head up.
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t75/Fredejensen/BCF827FF-B943-46EA-9261-4EA908852042_zps9aw7y5pt.jpg) (http://s157.photobucket.com/user/Fredejensen/media/BCF827FF-B943-46EA-9261-4EA908852042_zps9aw7y5pt.jpg.html)

The defenders on the Motte shoot back and start to take a heavy toll on the attackers.

The pagans brave the hail of arrows from the castle and continiue their advance.

The first unit to reach the Baileys walls are driven back and take heavy casualties.

But the rest of the pagan army is stedily advancing whilst returning enough fire to begin to do some damage to the Danish crusaders.

While the Pagan arrows are taking their toll on the Danish Crusaders they still hold the walls fiercly and repel another pagan assault.

The pagan general assaults the gates to try and get in that way as the walls are to well defended.

As the pagans rush through the destroyed gate the last defenders flee to make a last stand in the Motte.

The pagan general gripped by bloodlust charges the Danish hedgehog on the Motte and is brutally cut down.

The Danes choose to make a counterassault. But run into a deadly crossfire on the Motte Bridge.

And are cut down to a man in a hail of arrows.
